2023 LAKE FOREST SHOWHOUSE & GARDENS RETREAT JAMES THOMAS INTERIORS e have always been inspired by Lee Radziwell’s London apartment (designed by famed Italian decorator, Renzo Mongiardino) especially the Drawing Room which is adorned in various patterned Indian prints – from the walls to the curtains to the upholstered pieces. What was originally designated as the “Wrapping Room” at the showhouse, we have reimagined as “The Retreat”. This is a place where one can escape the hustle and bustle of everyday life for a quiet time to nap, read or enjoy a glass of wine. To reinterpret Mr. Mongiardino’s fabric scheme, we turned to Pierre Frey, one of our favorite fabric houses. Pierre Frey has relaunched a handful of their archival Le Manach and Braquenie prints, and it was these prints that we have used in a bold, new way for The Retreat. A comfy sofa is topped by an elaborate tester and that same fabric is repeated on the window treatments to create a sense of consistency. The walls are sheathed in Pierre Frey’s Pommes de Pin wallcovering and the ceiling is artfully covered in Frey’s Alpilles. The color scheme of ochre, brown and cinnamon is perhaps a tad unusual, but we love it’s quirky, unexpected qualities. Vintage furniture pieces are paired with clean-lined contemporary shapes and a bold, eclectic art piece by Jack Roth takes center stage. We chose to ground the space with black sisal, layered with a graphic area rug by Scott Group Studio. Take a seat, pour yourself a drink and enjoy our chic retreat! HORN DANLY DESIGNS
2023 LAKE FOREST SHOWHOUSE & GARDENS THE DAMP ROOM HORN DANLY DESIGNS ight off the entry is a long corridor begging to participate in the welcoming of guests – so it is only fitting to offer a bit of bubbly. While we were limited in terms of space and natural lighting, my goal was to design a functional and captivating entryway, fit for a luxurious greeting and maybe even a champagne tasting. Inspired by the champagne itself, I incorporated circular geometry, rich materials, and international form and movement. These distinct elements, along with the dark, moody palette, provide a sense of scope as opposed to mere circulation. A sense of luster was carried through to the champagne storage room with natural elements displayed within the furniture. The vestibule truly makes you feel as if you’re immersed in bubbles with crystal beads on the wall and ceiling. To complement the space, I selected contemporary artwork that stays true to the champagne theme. David Ryan’s abstract take on a champagne bottle adds a touch of modernity, while Lincoln Shatz’s The Lake Series photography illuminates the space with natural light. The addition of French accents adds a sense of refinement and sophistication, ensuring that the space is perfect for both champagne connoisseurs and non-alcoholic enthusiasts - which led me to the title of “The Damp Room”. 2023 LAKE FOREST SHOWHOUSE & GARDENS BOY ’S BEDROOM ILENE CHASE DESIGN his neutral boys bedroom was designed for today’s active tween that needs a space to relax and decompress. While creating the room, Ilene Chase kept coming back to two words: “texture and tonality”. From there an earthy color palette was brought to life and juxtaposed with edgy statement pieces like the JH Lighting alabaster fixture and Verdi copper weaved rug. Ilene then filled the room with custom furniture upholstered in luxurious fabrics, unique fringe, and smooth leather. The bed was specifically designed to be modular so anyone can effortlessly transform it into a lounging sofa. 2023 LAKE FOREST SHOWHOUSE & GARDENS YOUNG COLLECTOR’S BEDROOM JENNY BROWN DESIGNS or our bedroom design, I recalled some of my fondest memories of childhood visiting the various houses of my grandmother and her friends. Bedecked in florals and checks from floor to ceiling, their fearless celebration of color and pattern mixed with fine antiques and objects added a sense of joy and whimsy to the most sophisticated houses, and sophisticated they were. It is in this spirit that I knew we had to use this poppy chintz, as it captures the essence of vintage florals favored in the 60’s and 70’s. We draped the windows in this pretty, preppy print and could not resist the colorful coordination of the starbursts and stripes covering the walls and the elegant custom rug framed in poppies across the floor. These elements mixed with antique and vintage furnishings, including a French Directoire commode, English aesthetic movement chairs, Italian tole chandelier and bohemian glass lamps, create a space that feels timeless and fresh and well suited for a collector of any age. 2023 LAKE FOREST SHOWHOUSE & GARDENS BEDROOM RANDY HELLER PURE AND SIMPLE INTERIORS n elevated take on the classical; the guest bedroom soothes the soul and breaks the norm. Serving as a retreat for world travelers, this carefully curated room captures the timeless atmosphere of a museum, with nods to European design. A touch of whimsy is introduced with Francois - Xavier’s Lalanne Sheep, found through Antiques on Old Plank Road. The exquisitely carved Calacatta Viola marble mantelpiece (fabricated by Atelier Jouvence) serves as a focal point for the guest room, adding historically correct architectural detail. Raw, limestone washed walls in a warm Benjamin Moore paint color was artistically applied by DiVinci Painters, and partners beautifully with the applied molding installed by General Contracting through Nowak Construction; giving the room an old-world feel. Offsetting that feeling is a delicate glass ceiling fixture (designed by Randy Heller) and a tortoise with bone inlay nightstand, designed by Alfonso Marina through the CAI Designs Showroom. A layered sense of tactile comfort permeates the room through the use of varying textures. Natural linen fabric by British designer, Rose Uniacke (in collaboration with the Jean De Merry Showroom), has been hand sewn into luxurious drapery panels by Unique Creations. These panels hang delicately from Brimar’s custom black steel drapery hardware. The woven linen of French mattress pad, buttery leather hides for the table cloth & silk velvet fabric for the rolled pillow have been provided by the Holly Hunt showroom. The old world sewing and fabricating of the tablecloth and platform bed are the result of the talented and professional hands of Brothers Furniture Services, while the European spun wool throw is compliments of Bedside Manor in Lake Forest. Contrasting the refinements of the past, with the cutting edge of the present, is the curation of contemporary art. Above the French bed hangs a piece by Alexa Culioli. Additional vintage and antique art were carefully selected at Richard Norton Galleries. Our avant-garde accessories (ranging in materials & geographies) are sourced from, Oliver Gustav, Colin King , & Randy Heller Interiors. Underneath it all is a stunning area rug, compliments of Oscar Isberian Rugs in Chicago. 2023 LAKE FOREST SHOWHOUSE & GARDENS DESIGNER’S OFFICE NORA C. MARRA INTERIORS his room started its life as a hallway with large cabinets to store the previous owners fly rods! We realized if we removed the cabinets and with the rooms proximity to the kitchen - this was the perfect location and space to become a home office. The current owner is an interior decorator herself so we wanted to give her an office where she could be creative and stay organized yet have it be gracious enough for her to meet with clients. The custom etageres and baskets help keep fabric, finish samples and office supplies organized. The desk was once an antique pine table which we reworked by adding a leather insert and altering the apron so it could work as a desk or a large surface to lay out schemes. We added a giant custom bulletin board behind the desk to further allow the designer to present her vision. The chairs are all vintage and have been freshly refurbished and reupholstered. The larger chairs are covered in a fun and lively Madeaux stripe and the small black chairs have a dainty Schumacher bankers stripe as their cushions. The gorgeous hand run embroidered fern fabric from Madeaux was paper backed to turn it into a wallpaper - the monumental scale of the ferns enhances the height of the room and helps bring the outside in. The dark green grasscloth on the ceiling and the back wall is from Osborne and Little and furthers the feeling of being out-of-doors. The globe pendant from Hector Finch is a modern take on a traditional light fixture. Because of the position of the desk the designer can look out the window - but if privacy is required the shutters can be closed while still allowing light to come through on the upper half of the window. The sisal rug from Watson Smith is a terrific neutral option and melds well with the fern fabric and the grasscloth all while cutting the formality of the antiques and the embroidered fabric wallpaper. 2023 LAKE FOREST SHOWHOUSE & GARDENS FRONT ENTRY ELIZABETH STAMOS DESIGN he guests who stay at the east cottage are welcomed into an elevated yet comfortable space to call home for a few days or a few months. Inspired by cottages of storied European country estates, the aesthetic evokes an easy elegance to inspire the well-traveled and stylish guests who stay on property. An antique bleached French commode and pair of iconic Billy Baldwin slipper chairs sit alongside the main wall of the entry adding functionality and a spot to sit and kick off your shoes. A large camel bone and penwork mirror, set of Anglo Indian botanicals and an oxblood table lamp are a nod to design icons John Rosselli, Lee Raziwill and Bunny Williams and create a space to check yourself when entering and leaving. Airy linen portiere draperies soften the opening of the entry hall and create a bit of unexpected drama and warmth in which to flow through the home. The skirted center table is meant to create an axis point for the cottage and is covered in a Pierre Frey Braquenie block print. A blown-up painted floor, inspired by patterns seen by Elizabeth on a recent trip to Mallorca, add more layers of interest as does the Indian block print wallpaper that adorns all walls and closet doors. The final layer of art, photography and accessories add to the collected feel of the room and enhance the storied sense of place. Thank you to all our vendors who helped make this room possible. 2023 LAKE FOREST SHOWHOUSE & GARDENS BATH INTERIOR DESIGN PARTNERSHIP (IDP) ocated off the entry, the colorful East Cottage bath is small, but mighty. Taking center stage, the delightful blue and white aerial garden wallpaper is reminiscent of a whimsical English country garden, and is juxtaposed with an Erik Knight line portrait of an effortlessly cool, glamorous woman. The mosaic porcelain floor picks up the geometry of the wallpaper’s garden plan, while the ceiling’s tonal wallpaper and high gloss trim add additional texture and nuance. The vanity feels vintage and airy with its brass console base, custom quartz countertop with matching scalloped edge backsplash, and a wall-mounted brass faucet. Blending the lines between modern and traditional, the conical sconces expertly frame the curves of the lacquered antique carved floral mirror. The bathtub is neatly concealed by a lovely cornice board and drapery panels in a solid blue chintz fabric with a showstopping decorative white fret appliqué trim. 2023 LAKE FOREST SHOWHOUSE & GARDENS LIVING/DINING ROOM MICHELE FRIGON DESIGN hat better way to escape the main house and the harsh midwestern winters than with a space that feels like an escape to simpler times - in sunny Palm Beach! Upon entering the cottage one is transported from the hustle and bustle of everyday life, trading devices and electronics for a spirited game of backgammon, mixing old school cocktails or just snuggling into a corner with a good book. This space is meant to be used to unwind and connect with friends and family but is equally as nice as a quiet escape for one! The Palette is fresh, bright, and sunny with a combination of olive greens, cerulean blues and lilac with a subtle play on pattern through the use of custom printed block print textiles on chairs and pillows. The New Introduction McClaurin Piercy GrassCloth Wallcovering (represented by Holly Hunt Chicago) is a textural backdrop to the space. Working together with a sisal rug and furniture shapes, it will evoke the feeling of a sunny morning or afternoon in warmer climate. I have made it a priority to showcase local Chicago makers and artisans, including Maresca Textiles, Artisan 312 Furniture (a new local bespoke line of furniture “to the trade”), Vintage Refined (repurposing old furniture), Brimar a local family owned drapery hardware and decorative trim as well as partnering with our new local Serena and Lily store. 2023 LAKE FOREST SHOWHOUSE & GARDENS KITCHEN LORI LENNON & ASSOCIATES he original concept was to give the kitchen a beautiful face lift. However, after reviewing the cabinet layout, master designer, Lori Lennon, could not ignore the disregard for function and lack of storage space. Lori redesigned the kitchen with custom cabinets to achieve functionality by utilizing every inch of space while creating the ever-important symmetry, visual balance and aesthetic beauty. Notice the focal point wall with off center window flanked intentionally with handsome matching tall 12” wide open cabinets that helps to create aesthetic balance. The base cabinets below are designed with symmetrical panel fronts which cleverly conceal spaces between spice rack, dishwasher, sink base and trash bin. To add another touch of class, anyone will enjoy using the Moen Nio Smart Kitchen Faucet in black and gold with turn off/on water either using voice or wave of hands-free option. The most important appliance is the professional range by Hallman Industries, accessorized gold on black range with five brass Italian gas burners providing the perfect blend of gas power and smart convection electric oven. The final finish is the range’s stunning black with gold continues in the same finishes for lower cabinets and the perfect contrast to the white cabinets above. The Caesarstone’s Empira white quartz is the ideal pattern for the counter tops. And the perfect finishing touch is the ceiling, adorned with a striking black and white floral design wallpaper. This new perfectly redesigned, functional, and beautiful kitchen is ready for you to add your own personal touches for cooking and entertaining. LORI LENNON [email protected] 847.951.8772 350 S. 2023 LAKE FOREST SHOWHOUSE & GARDENS EDITOR’S STUDIO THE EDITOR’S STUDIO Lake Forest Show House 2023 KELLY HURLIMAN DESIGN he vision for the Editor’s Studio was inspired by a modern-day version of Fleur Cowles, the editor and creative force behind Flair magazine in 1950. 2023 LAKE FOREST SHOWHOUSE & GARDENS PRIMARY BEDROOM & BATH LAUREN COLLANDER INTERIORS ocooned in a bronze glimmering cork wallpaper this bedroom is titled “Embodiment of a Woman”. It is inspired by the world we balance as women between strength and softness. We created this boutique hotel-inspired guest suite to lounge, rest, and live your best life. The bold show-stopping Vladimir Kagan sofa is the picture of grace in this former large closet-turned-lounge space. The clean lines of the walnut headboard sit atop an Alexander McQueen handwoven silk rug, capturing the hypnotic movement of this delicate motif. The dramatic, peppery hues of the “Monarch Fire” are a striking counterbalance to the gentle tones of the mixed hand-forged metals. We invite you to explore each drawer of the dressing vanity as you uncover a thoughtful way of living with everything you need at arm’s reach. Our goal with this project was to bring our dreams to life through architectural balance, a thoughtful lifestyle, and a touch of the unexpected. Thank you to our trusted vendors. 2023 LAKE FOREST SHOWHOUSE & GARDENS SHE SHED ELIZABETH KRUEGER DESIGN ur space in this year’s Showhouse, the garage, can only be described as an area of true transformation. Our team at Elizabeth Krueger Design, took an often overlooked and stripped down space and turned it into an inviting, light, and serene environment. We wanted to create the ultimate “She Shed,” a creative oasis one could escape to and find inspiration and rejuvenation. The first step in elevating this space was to strip away some of the original finishes, which included making the cinder block “disappear” and painting the walls and ceiling. By embracing certain aspects of the existing elements, such as the wood panels, the vision has an inherent character and softness that evokes both the old and new. Throughout the space you’ll notice careful attention was paid to the presence, and absence, of light and shadow. Additionally, wispy drapes, captivating art, and bespoke furnishings provide comfort and warmth to an overall ethereal experience. With inspiration taken from nature, lush plantings are punctuated by the sounds of trickling water. To bring the outdoors in, Nashville-based artist John Besser used a soft palette of blues and greys from Benjamin Moore to create the nearly 20’ floor-to-ceiling landscape. 2023 LAKE FOREST SHOWHOUSE & GARDENS GARDEN ROOM CYNTHIA MCCULLOUGH INTERIORS his west cottage sitting room and its brick patio, sitting on the edge of the estate’s grounds overlooking Open Lands, is all about bringing the outdoors in. This room was originally built as part of the “Head House” a man cave of sorts for the estate’s original owner where he showcased his taxidermy mounts. Fast forward to present day, this “she shed” has been lightened and brightened to delight the lady of the house. The room’s soaring height is framed by drapery in Rose Cumming’s resplendent Delphinium accented with Brimar’s fretwork trim and pickled oak hardware. Adding drama is a gracious, blanc faux bois chandelier, chic modern art by Chicago artist Linc Thelen, and a vintage breakfront finished in a mottled tortoise mahogany finish. The large fireplace is a cozy spot in the winter time to have a cup of tea while working on a puzzle, or share a glass of wine in the summer time with the screen door open, listening to the wildlife outdoors. The painted vintage Ficks Reed rattan sofas and chairs are outfitted in down wrapped cushions sporting a fresh spruce gingham in a slubby weave. Flanking the sofa are English painted end tables supporting Christopher Spitzmiller’s Ashley lamps in Hope Blue. The outdoor seating area surrounded by aged planters and boxwood topiaries, allows one to put their feet up while soaking in the last few rays of sunshine before watching the sun set on the savanna.
