Are you a mainstream traveler, always following the main highways or are you a diversionist, taking that chance
to detour from the main route to explore and maybe encounter something new or different? On our recent trip

The steam train at National Park Te Kuiti Japanese garden
Bev in Te Kuiti
This was our first time at purchasing a token (from the station cafe) and
using a Kiwi Camp which included toilets, showers, laundry and basic
kitchen facilities. With only a few camping vehicles during the day the site
became a plethora of mingling international visitors together with kiwi
travellers. Powered sites and electric vehicle charging points were also
available, a sign of changing times. Highlights for us were the steam train
stopping off while we were there and getting our electric bikes out on the
local tracks into the hills.

Continuing up the left side of the mountains and Lake Taupo we travelled
past the Owhanga Lodge and Hotel which offers accommodation and ad-
venture rafting activities and through Taumaranui, home of the Forgotten
World Adventures to Te Kuiti.

Famous for shearing and Colin Meads we recommend taking a left turn
before crossing the rail lines and walking across the amazing rail pedes-
trian bridge into the town centre. With everything from modern stained
glass pictures portraying the regions history to a Japanese garden there is
a lot to see.

Te Kuiti also has a small Kiwi Camp but we decided to carry on to Otoro-
hanga stopping at a basic sheltered campground, with power and facili-
ties backing onto the Otorohanga Kiwi House and Native Bird Park. On our
travels we have visited many kiwi houses but this one remains our
favourite.

The park comprises many hectares of native bush and walk-
ing tracks of varying lengths. A moderate level of fitness is
recommended due to the undulating nature of the tracks. A
highlight for us was coming across an abandoned kiwi bur-
row in the base of a large tree and an active one in a bank.

Self-contained campers can stay overnight in the outside
carpark. This ensures you get to see and hear the birds at
their most active early in the morning. We were more than
happy to make a worthwhile donation towards the devel-
opment of the reserve.

From here our adventure up the left side came to an end
but we made sure we checked out some of the many camp-
ing reserves along the banks of the mighty Waikato River,
got lost and were on the lookout for a red tractor.

The Crown Range Monument

With the sealing of the last part of the
road in 2000, the Crown Range Pass, at
1076m, became the highest sealed road
in New Zealand.

The first Europeans crossed the pass in
1850 and the first tourists crossed it in
horse-drawn wagons in 1877.

Setting out from Arrowtown, I used Tobin’s track to by- Approaching the neck between Lakes Hawea & Wanaka

road, but there is still plenty of climbing to do after re-
joining the road. It’s a long winding climb, and even
though I could ride much of it, a loaded bicycle is
pretty slow and wobbly at low speed. I decided that my
safety was a lot better if I walked, especially around
blind left-handed corners as I could be further to the
left, with my bike between me and the traffic.

It’s always an achievement to get to a road summit —
it was the first time I’d cycled this one from the south.
Of course the downhill was wonderful, with a café stop
at Cardrona and a relaxed arrival in Wanaka, where I de-
cided to camp at one of the campgrounds to allow an-
other grocery top-up.

Next day I was heading off past Albert Town, the first
time I’d come across a one-way bridge with traffic
lights and a cyclists’ push-button to switch them, and
then on to Hawea and beyond.

There was a reasonably strong nor’westerly slowing Haast Pass Summit

Camping / caravan tips — Setup / packup

Marty Ireland

Do you struggle when you set up your camp or your caravan?

We are on to our 3rd caravan but the latest came with a
host of manuals for everything like gas stove, fridge, awning
etc. so as a specialist assembler and installer, advising oth-
ers that they should read all instructions provided, I decided
to do just that.

Now here is a suggestion: just relax, sit down with a coffee
and read, even if you do not fully understand, read all the
information to get a general overview. Then go and try each
appliance until it works and you feel comfortable and con-
fident with it.

Do a dummy run on awning or tent set up if you have or can
find an area to do this before leaving.

It may be a little trying, but as you get each thing down pat,
start a set up list with each step in order and have it lami-
nated and ready inside the car, caravan door or tent bag.

fortune, and we nearly didn’t go ahead, but decided to
‘just do it’ and hope that other people felt the same way
we did about emptying their cassettes.

During the six months that we waited for the tool to be
made, there were a lot of other things to do. We had to
source a manufacturer for the bags that are supplied with
the Dump Mates, and set up a website and Facebook
page. We designed and got our bookmarks (business
cards) printed, and ordered the tas-
sels to put on them. We had adver-
tising copy to write, and photos and
videos to organise. John even built a
model dump station for demonstra-
tion purposes.

By July 2019 we had 1200 Dump
Mates in our garage, (a very scary
moment) and we had to start selling
them. Things were a bit slow to start
with and it took us 3 months to sell
the first 100, but now we have sold

things a lot easier for us. We don’t

Caravan & Motorhome Electrics by Collyn Rivers

This is a book for people who want to understand how their electrics work as well as for people who are
designing / building / converting a caravan or motorhome.

It tells you how to install, how to identify, understand and (some-
times) fix anything that does not work as it should.

It will give you a good understanding of alternators, regulators, bat-
teries and their charging and monitoring, solar energy and genera-
tors. It will help you scale what you want to do with what is possible in
your particular setup.

It also helps when you are talking to rv service professionals, who may
be expert in vehicles but not rvs, or vice versa. Problems arise when
service professionals don’t truly understand how the vehicle and RV
systems differ and how they interact.

You can read the table of contents (ckw.nz/cme-contents) and down-
load a sample chapter from his website’s book page.

His books are often in local libraries, you can buy them at book depos-
itory ($36NZ free delivery), or buy a kindle version from amazon.com.

Camping without a fridge: chilly bins and cooler bags

I am no expert, but here are my

In the old days, people used “meat

did agree to stay another night, but we enjoyed the warmth

of Ray's 30º heater that evening, while playing cards until

bedtime. This was from our newly installed diesel heater. Oh

boy, we soon wondered if there was actually nothing wrong

with the old gas one after all. The installers spent a lot of

hours trying to work out the problem. Even with lagged

pipes the heater wouldn't get warmer than 18º. Finally we

were told the poor insulation and many windows in the bus

were the problem.

So over the last few months we came up with a plan. Our bus has a lot of windows

front of the window. No probs. Op shop curtains pur-
chased and now we sit draft-free with a feeling of sitting
in a yurt in the back of the bus.

3. The carpet did need underlay as we still felt it cold.
Fixed.

4. Hubby couldn't stand the cold on his body from the bus
wall lining under the window by the bed. He needs a bit
more fat on him! So we bought yoga mats. Nice and thin.
Can lay under the mattress when not in use.
Perfect.

5. Stumbled on a net curtain to cover the door for insects
and thought, why not also get a long curtain to cover the
door for cold? Found one that fits a treat and hangs
around my passenger-side headrest when not in use.
Another draft fixed.

6. The venetian blinds in the kitchen: we found just enough
curtain to cover over them as well.
We are going to be so snug!

7. The bathroom felt like a bucket of ice. We hung a curtain
cord and threaded a towel by its own hem. That kept the
cold off our arm. Easy to wash.
Might try leaving the door open in the evening to let the
heat from the cabin flow in.

That only left the driver's window area. We heard about in-
sulation paper that builders use. We bought about 10 me-
ters, cut it down to each individual window size, then used a
heat gun and sealed the edges. This hopefully will help with
the frost also! We hope...

Since doing all this, we have been unable to get out to try it,
other than 2 nights at Lake Camp before winter really hit, af-
ter the carpet was put in and we had our curtains over the
back windows. That little made a big difference.
