The Haswells Community Party

What a summer!  With the Haswells Banner Parade and the visit to the 2017 Durham Miners' Gala in
July, followed by the Summer Holiday programme throughout August, as well as the inaugural 2017
The Haswells Carnival, we hope that you and your loved ones have had something to look forward to
 each and every day.

The banner parade and carnival will now be annual events to ensure that the people of our villages
have the chance to honour the history of The Haswells, spend time together and celebrate as a
community.  As you will see, there will be lots more events across the year for The Haswells and we
hope that everyone  will have a chance to do something that they love in  their own village.

Finally, please don't forget that the parish patch is for YOU! Would you like to write an article, a story
or let everyone know something that is going on? Then don't hesitate to get in touch! Also, we are
always looking for local  companies to take the chance to promote their business in this publication.
Many of the advertisers have already commented on the business that the first parish patch generated
for them so THANK YOU!  The parish patch has now grown from  12 to 20 pages to meet demand but we
don't want it to stop there.  We hope to continue to grow this publication over the coming months so
please continue to support the local businesses you find across this publication.

Finally (even though you're probably reading this in October...) can we take this opportunity to wish
you, your family and all your loved ones a fantastic Christmas and a prosperous new year from
everyone at The Haswells Community Party.  See you soon!

Kind regards,  [email protected]

St Paul's Church

Dear Friends

It was an inspiring summer of community events and
activities! A huge THANK YOU to everyone who
helped organize and took part in them. A highlight for
me was when we marked 150 years of our church in
July with so many local folk and those returning to
Haswell having moved away. And the Bishop of
Jarrow led such a joyful service of celebration and
thanksgiving. It was wonderful to enjoy our village
children singing and watch the trainees from Mencap
present a moving drama about what it means to love
our neighbour. We all sang favourite hymns and
songs and it was generally agreed that we should
gather like this more often.

Therefore, we will hold another celebration service, Unity in the Community, at St Paul’s on
Sunday 15 th October, and we are also planning a Community Carol Service on 10th December. I
hope you will come along – we can guarantee they will be uplifting and positive occasions. In
between these, we pause in November to remember the sacrifice of those who fought in the
armed forces to preserve our freedom.

Did you know that the First World War memorial which stands outside
St Paul’s has recently been listed’? We can be rightly proud of this
historic monument, and of the brave men from the Haswells who gave
their lives and whose names will never be forgotten. The memorial,
will be the focus for our Remembrance services on 11th and 12th
November. On 11th the church will be open for quiet reflection and
prayer, with a short service including two minutes’ silence at 11am.

On Remembrance Sunday we are again holding a community service
in the afternoon, walking through the village led by the band, and then
sharing tea together. It is always good to see young people at these
services: last year Giant Steps Nursery joined us on 11th.  We want our
children to understand the significance of poppies and remembrance,
and keep these important memories alive.
Back in July the Bishop taught us a great saying which is so apt for the Haswells at this time.
Please join me in adopting it as we journey together through the coming months:

"For all that has been, Thanks. For all that will be, Yes!"

May God bless you and bless this community as we support and care for one another.

AnnaWith all good wishes

The Great War & The Haswells

Over the last few years, a young man from Haswell, Stuart Major, has researched the lives of other young men from
The Haswells - the lives of those who served during World War I (1914-18), also known as The Great War.  He wanted

to visit the graves of those who gave their lives during this conflict to pay his respects.

On 12th-14th September 2017, Stuart and his mother Elaine visited Belgium, but specifically the war graves and
memorial sites to those from The Haswells who gave their lives in The Great War. He fulfilled his aim, and in doing
so, paid his respects, and those of the people of The Haswells, to those who gave their lives for the privileges we

receive today.

These are the graves and memorials they visited:

Tyne Cot CWGC Cemetery, Ypres Salient, Belgium
Gunner John Forbes (on the panels, as he has no known grave) who
worked as a shoesmith and farrier as well as his role as Gunner in the
Royal Artillery. He died in October 1917.

L/Cpl David Souter – Machine Gun Corps.

Ypres Reservoir CWGC Cemetery, Ypres Salient, Belgium
Pte Edward Henderson, who was in the 22nd Battalion DLI. Before
the war, he lived in 3 Station Street, Haswell and worked as a
postman for GPO.

Railway Dugouts Burial Ground (Transport Farm) CWGC
Cemetery, Ypres Salient, Belgium
Serjeant Peter Mitchell MM, who served in the 12th DLI. He was
awarded the Military Medal for his actions on the 29/30th May 1916.
He was the husband of the sister of George and Hugh Hyland, who
both died in WW1 and are listed on the memorial. He died on the 1st
January 1917. (The spelling of Serjeant is correct for a light infantry
soldier of that rank in 1914-18)

BardCottageCemetery CWGCCemetery,YpresSalient,Belgium
Pte Robert Taylor 151511 of the 11th DLI. He died August 1917.

MeninGateCemetery CWGCCemetery,YpresSalient,Belgium
Edward Bentham
1st/5th DLI of 2nd Cross Row Haswell Plough. Died May 1915.

John G. Cowie
1st/5th DLI. Died April 1915

Patrick Elmore
2nd East Yorkshire Regiment. Died April 1915.

In life officers and other ranks lived separate lives. However in death,
they are side by side. This can be seen by a lowly private of the DLI
buried next to a Brigadier General, who had received the Victoria
Cross.

This is equally the same as the treatment we gave our enemy. In life… enemy. In death… comrades, buried side by side
with British and Commonwealth troops.

When you go home, tell them of us and say:
For their tomorrow, we gave our today

ANYA THE SUPERST   R!

Did you enjoy the Inaugural The Haswells Carnival? It was such a busy, bustling, activity-filled
day with smiling faces and total togetherness of the people of The Haswells and our supportive
neighbouring villages.

One such happy smiling face that day was that of Anya Ellsworth, 7,
who with the help of her family and the kind permission of Haswell
Parish Council, opened up a little table to sell cookies to raise funds to
donate to Children With Cancer UK. When asked what her reasons
were for this charity efforts, Anya simply said that she felt sad for
children who suffered with Cancer and for their families whom she
thinks need all our help and support as Cancer touches us all at some
point.

Children with Cancer UK uses 83p out of every pound to
directly assist children who are sick through cost of care
and medication but most importantly through research to
find a less invasive method of treatment of cancer for
young children. This fact was a very grabbing point for
Anya in choosing the choice of charity to fundraise for as she hopes to be a surgeon one day
and hopes that by then, medical research would have advanced greatly for us all. She wanted to
play her part in helping with the funds that are sorely needed to do so if there is any chance for
this hope to be realised.

Cookies on sale were plain chocolate cookies, white chocolate
cookies as well as oat raisin and cinnamon cookies. Carol
Rookes also donated 12 beautiful cupcakes to add to her table!
Her modest target for the day was £50. Through cookie sales
to the kind people and friends of the village, a token from her
godparents and leftover cookie sales to her dad and baby
brother, the target was smashed and she raised a total of
£102.20. (No deduction for material or costs)

Lastly, Anya would like to say a huge THANK YOU to everyone including
her friends and their parents for supporting her stall. She hopes you all
enjoyed the cookies! Children with Cancer UK has also sent Anya a
message of thanks and she in turn extends that thanks to all of you!!
Thank you also she says, to the wonderful organisers of the village
carnival and for allowing her to raise funds at the event.

Good luck Anya with all your future fundraising efforts!

The Lisa Dixon Centre

Wow! What a Summer! We were very lucky in securing funding from East Durham AAP to fund a
very successful summer activity programme. The programme saw 422 children enjoying activities
and 959 free meals were given out. The success of this project was down to the partnership working
between ourselves, Giant Steps Nursery, Haswell Parish Council and St Pauls Church. The activities
brought everyone together, something which I hope we can repeat and we will celebrate all of these
achievements in the “Unity in the Community” Concert in St Pauls Church.

The last quarter of the year is both our favourite and busiest period of the year with many activities
taking place which you will see within the Parish Patch. Starting with October, we have some
fantastic events lined up including a Steak & Curry Night and a Spiritualist Night coupled with a very
busy school holiday programme once again.

Our highlight of the last quarter is always our Nativity Service in Durham Cathedral, this is a very
special and moving service which is open to everyone to attend, we do recommend that you get there
early as the Cathedral is often filled to capacity.

I would like to take this opportunity to wish you all a very Merry Christmas and a prosperous New
Year from everyone at The Lisa Dixon Centre.

We wish to thank everybody that took part in our summer activities as part of the holiday
hunger programme. We had such a fantastic time meeting new families and watching the
community come together  to have fun.

The festivities will continue throughout the year as we have many reasons to celebrate such
as the harvest festival,  spooky experiences for Halloween, and lots of Bonfire Night fun.
Christmas is fast approaching and the children from Giant Steps nursery will be performing
a Christmas concert St Paul's Church. We will also be holding a Christmas lunch and a
Christmas party where Santa will be paying us a visit!!

We currently have places available for our 0-2 room, and 2-5 room, including care places for
0-2 year olds,  2 year old funded sessions, 3-4 year old Education sessions, 30 hour
entitlement and  holiday club places. Please do not hesitate to contact us if you would like
any further information or to have a look around.

We thank you all  for your continued support and take this opportunity to wish you all a
