when i was first asked to do a self-portrait of myself, i put it off for as long as
possible. i didnt know what to do at first.
then i thought of the quote by chuck palahniuk,
“i am the combined effort of everyone i’ve never known.”
and how james victore said,
“i am everyone i have ever loved”
i know it’s weird for a ‘self’-portrait, but these people have made me who i am
today. here they are.
nic is my best friend. we met in year 7 and got a lot closer during the
pandemic when we went on nightly social-distanced walks keeping each other
caught up on what has been going on in our lives. they have always been my
biggest supporter and they have had my back since the day we met. i always
know that they’re there for me. they left to go to uni recently and i’ve been
missing them a lot.
finn is the kindest boy i have ever met. i met him when i took french in the first
year and even after i failed the course we still talked. he started making me watch
all of his favourite shows, and i liked them a lot. he cooks food for me and we
dance together and we share all of our favourite songs. he makes me laugh all the
time and he’s incredibly nice and i love him with all my heart. i’ve known him for
two years now and i couldn’t have asked for a better friend.
so, onto me. i’m ebony. i like beautiful places. i like words that make me feel
something. i love my siblings, all seven of them. i hate public speaking, i love
writing. i think i’m a good friend, i know i’m a terrible ukulele player.
i’ve spent a lot of time trying to work out who i am. i think it’s as simple as this: i
write poetry. i love everyone i see. i’m a good person, i hope.
