Preface

Since I’m in mathayom and I need to learn
Chemistry, Niels Bohr is one of the first
physicists all students know. Most of the time, we
start learning Chemistry by knowing about the
atomic structure and Niels Bohr,he proposed a model
of the atom in which the electron was able to
occupy only certain orbits around the nucleus. This
atomic model was the first to use quantum theory,
in that the electrons were limited to specific
orbits around the nucleus. Bohr used his model to
explain the spectral lines of hydrogen.

Introduction

Niels Bohr or some of you might be more familiar
with ‘Bohr’s atomic structure’ or the more well
known statement, I believe that everybody who
learns chemistry must have learned about this, the
‘2 , 8 , 18 , 32 ‘ pattern. It is the pattern in
which we use it for arranging the electrons in each
orbital of an element.

We know that Niels Bohr is the one who discovered
this atomic structure theory. We often see and hear
about Niels Bohr’s life, his background, his
research, and maybe the description of what he
found which made a big change in science history.

But what about his spiritual beliefs? I believe
that not many of us know about his spiritual
beliefs since he is popular in the field of
science. So, let’s find out!!!!

Biography

Niels Bohr was born on October 7, 1885, in
Copenhagen, Denmark. His mother, Ellen Adler, was a
daughter of a prominent Jewish banker and his
father, Christian Bohr, was a professor of
physiology at the University of Copenhagen and was
nominated twice for the Nobel Prize. In 1912, Bohr
married Margrethe Nørlund. Throughout his life,
Margrethe was his most-trusted adviser. They had
six sons, the fourth of them, became a well-known
physics scientist as well.He is Aage N. Bohr,he
shared a third of the 1975 Nobel Prize for Physics
in recognition of the collective model of the
atomic nucleus proposed in the early 1950s.

Bohr’s own research led him to theorize in a series
of articles that atoms give off electromagnetic
radiation as a result of electrons jumping to
different orbit levels, departing from a previously
held model espoused by Ernest Rutherford. Though
Bohr's discovery would eventually be tweaked by
other scientists, his ideas formed the basis of
future atomic research.

Already in his 1913 trilogy, Bohr had sought to
apply his theory to the understanding of the
periodic table of elements. He improved upon that
aspect of his work into the early 1920s, by which
time he had developed an elaborate scheme building
up the periodic table by adding electrons one after
another to the atom according to his atomic model.
He was awarded the nobel prize for his work in
1922.

The Nobel Prize in Physics 1922 was awarded to
Niels Henrik David Bohr "for his services in the
investigation of the structure of atoms and of the
radiation emanating from them."

-Niels Bohr’s atomic structure description

Bohr's greatest contribution to modern physics was
the atomic model. The Bohr model shows the atom as
a small, positively charged nucleus surrounded by
orbiting electrons.

Bohr was the first to discover that electrons
travel in separate orbits around the nucleus and
that the number of electrons in the outer orbit
determines the properties of an element.

Spiritual belief

Bohr was baptized a Lutheran, which was the
religion of his father's family. However, his
mother came from a wealthy and influential Jewish
family.Bohr's parents were married in a civil
ceremony,indicating they weren't very religious.
But it was also likely the result of them being
from different religious backgrounds.

Nevertheless, Bohr's biographers seem to agree that
his family was not religious. Prior to his marriage
to Margrethe Nørlund, Bohr "quietly resigned" from
the Lutheran Church. His wife, who remained a
Lutheran until after the wedding, said Niels no
longer "was taken" by it. Bohr is widely considered
an atheist but there isn’t any quote indicating
that. He did once write about the difference
between science and religion, mentioning that "the
idea of a personal God is foreign to me," but went
on to explain that science and religion use
language differently, not that one is right and the
other wrong. So, we can infer that he was either an
agonist or an atheist.
