PROGRAM

Ave Verum Corpus William Byrd (1543-1623)
Ave verum corpus, Hail, true body,
Born of the virgin Mary;
Natum de Maria virgine; Who has truly suffered, slaughtered
Vere passum immolatum On the Cross for humanity.
Whose side was pierced,
In crucis pro homine. Pouring out water and blood.
Cuius latus perforatum Be a foretaste for us
During our ordeal of death.
Unda fluxit sanguine. O sweet, o holy,
Esto nobis praegustatum O Jesus Son of Mary,
Have mercy on me. Amen.
In mortis examine.
O dulcis, o pie, Ysaÿe Barnwell (b. 1946)

O Jesu Fili Mariae,
Miserere mei. Amen.

PROGRAM NOTES

In the Spring quarter, our Chamber Singers were the first collegiate ensemble in the
country to perform a live-remote concert after the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic. That
performance “embraced the lag” inherent in online collaboration and presented four aleatoric
compositions meant to create atmospheric music that did not need to line up rhythmically.
This quarter, the Chamber Singers have been exploring what we can do to make our per-
formance feel a bit more like traditional choral music. First, we focused on getting everyone
in the ensemble better access to wired internet, and we’ve been delighted to collaborate
with our regular rehearsal and performance pianist to attempt to perform music that doesn’t
ignore the lag, but tries to adapt more traditional pieces to create a semi-synchronous experi-
ence.
To make synchronous (or semi-synchronous) music work live over the internet, we have
to employ a few tricks. First, while you will note that Dan Cromeenes is listed on the program,
you won’t actually be hearing piano. Dan is our musical leader for this performance and will be
playing along with the two pieces and guiding us in staying rhythmically together. While all the
singers will be able to hear Dan and follow his musical lead, he’ll be removed from the final mix
that goes out to our YouTube stream. By combining his performance with a metronome, it can
almost feel like we are singing together as a normal ensemble. We’ve even found some places
where Dan counts out loud or where individual singers will solo Dan’s performance so that
they only hear him to sing along.
