George Frideric Handel

Handel was a German-born Baroque composer who became well known for his operas,
oratorios, anthems, concerti grossi, and organ concertos. Handel spent most of his career
in London but remained to be influenced by both the middle-German choral tradition as
well as the Italian Baroque composers.
Handel composed more than 40 opera seria over a period of about 30 years.

"Handel was not only a great composer; he was a dramatic genius of the first order."
- Musicologist Winton Dean.

Gulio Cesare (1724)

"Cesare, in pursuit of his enemy Pompeo, has followed him to Egypt. Pompeo's wife
Cornelia pleads with Cesare to spare her husband. He is about to grant her plea when the
Egyptians led by their boy-king Tolomeo bring him the head of Pompeo. Cornelia and
Pompeo's son Sesto vow to avenge his death. Tolomeo's sister Cleopatra desires to
depose her brother in order to become the sole ruler of Egypt. She joins Cornelia and
Sesto in their plans for vengeance and entreats Cesare to aid her. Following her
overtures, Cesare falls in love with Cleopatra. Her brother attempts to assassinate Cesare,
but he escapes. It is reported to Cleopatra that Cesare has drowned while in flight. She is
taken captive by her brother. Cesare, who has escaped drowning, enters to free his
beloved. Tolomeo is slain by Sesto because he forced himself upon Cornelia against her
will. Cesare makes Cleopatra Queen of Egypt and returns to Rome." - Wikipedia

"Caro! Bella!"

is a love song between Cesare and Cleopatra, who is to be the queen of Egypt. This
duet is at the end of the opera and leaves the audience with the message to celebrate
the power of love and the triumph of good over evil.

CESARE CAESAR
Bella! My lovely!

CLEOPATRA e CESARE CLEOPATRA and CAESAR
Più amabile beltà Beauty more worthy of love

del tuo bel volto than your beautiful face.
In me/te non splenderà In me/you there will not shine

Tolomeo (1728)

Tolomeo is an opera seria written in three acts by George Frideric Handel to an Italian text
by Nicola Francesco Haym. This was Handel's 13th and last opera for the Royal Academy
of Music. The story of the opera takes place at the time of Ptolemy IX (Tolomeo), who was
deposed by his mother and joint ruler of Egypt Cleopatra III in favour of his younger
brother, Ptolemy X. The themes of the opera include revenge, lust, lost love, devotion, and
eventually reconciliation.

"Non lo Dirò Col Labbro" English translation:
I will not say it with my lips
Lyrics: which have not that courage;
Non lo dirò col labbro Perhaps the sparks
Che tanto ardir non ha; of my burning eyes,
Forse con le faville Revealing my passion,
Dell'avide pupille, My glance will speak.
Per dir come tutt'ardo,
Lo sguardo parlerà.

Acis and Galatea (1718)

"Acis and Galatea is a tale concerning transient love, beauty, and jealousy, and is told
through music that encompasses the joyful and the melancholic.
Handel’s first dramatic work in the English language, the story follows the nymph Galatea
and the shepherd Acis, their love and adoration for each other, and the envious giant
Polyphemus who threatens their happiness."

"As when the dove laments her love"
So in love, Galatea must sing to Acis her feelings for him.

it was a lover and his lass

As You Like It William Shakespeare

(bapt. 1564 - 1616)

"As You Like It subverts the traditional rules of romance. Gender roles, nature and
politics are confused in a play that reflects on how bewildering yet utterly pleasurable
life can be."

"It Was a Lover and His Lass"

"This particular scene consists of Touchstone, the clown, and his intended bride, Audrey
(who is on record as saying "I am not a slut, though I thank the gods I am foul." Act III,
sc.3) running into two pages, who dance in a circle with them while one of the pages
sings this song. Part of the joke is that Touchstone is really only after Audrey because he
wants a tumble, the other part is in the lyrics of the song itself, about an amorous
couple getting busy in a cornfield."

an ode to sondheim

Stephen Sondheim
Stephen Sondheim has been deemed one of the most important figures in 20th-century theater,
being praised for having "reinvented the American musical" with shows that tackle unexpected
and nontraditional themes and complexity. His songs are often "tinged with ambivalence" about
the darker, more harrowing elements of the human experience.

His best-known works as a composer and lyricist include Company, Sweeny Todd, Sunday in the Park
with George, West Side Story, and Into the Woods.

He has received an Academy Award, 8 Tony Awards (more than any other composer), 8 Grammy's,
a Pulitzer Prize, and a 2015 Presidential Medal of Freedom, to only name a few of his
accomplishments.

"Work is what you do for others. Art is what you do for yourself."
- Stephen Sondheim

Scene Settings:

"On the Steps of the Palace"

Cinderella is running away from Prince Charming on the second night of the ball. Since she also
ran away on the first night, the prince has prepared...

"So Many People"

Helen admits to loving someone she never thought she would - a poor man. She has dreamed
about castles and fame but finds that love is worth much more.

"There's Always a Woman"

Cut from its larger work, Anyone Can Whistle, this piece escalates the "friendship"
between Fay and Cora.

contemporary theater

Contemporary Musical Theater

In the last 20 years or so, musical theater has undergone a transformation of sorts, both in its
musical styles and in its content. Contemporary musical theater is often heavily influenced by
popular music styles such as rock, jazz, and pop, and often uses unconventional accompaniment.
The melodies are often more complex and less predictable than the standard era.
Some of the most famous contemporary musicals are A Bronx Tale, Addams family, Anastasia,
Avenue Q, The Book of Mormon, Come From Away, Dear Evan Hanson, Seussical, and Wicked.

Scene Settings:

"Watch What Happens"

Based on the real-life Newsboy Strike of 1899, the Disney musical Newsies tells the story of
rebellious newsboys who dream of a life away from the big city. "Watch What Happens," sung by
Katherine, the only female in the show, conveys the mixed emotions she feels when faced with
the opportunity to write her first breakthrough article.
"No One Else"
Natasha, Pierre & The Great Comet of 1812 is based on Leo Tolstoy's War and Peace. Having recently
been engaged to a Prince Andrey who is off at war, Natasha is missing her love. Convinced by her
godmother that she should meet his (and soon to be her) family, Natasha sets up a meeting. The
introductions go horribly wrong, with no one getting along, and Natasha leaves, missing Andrey
even more.

Craig Carnelia

Carnelia is an American musical theater composer and singer, best known for his collaboration on
the musicals Working and Sweet Smell of Success. He has been nominated for numerous Tony's for
these musical soundtracks.
"Flight" was first released in the 90s by Karen Akers, a cabaret singer, and was later recorded by
numerous musical theater icons, including Sutton Foster and Megan McGinnis. This song was
arranged by Michael Rafter.
We chose this song because it conveys feelings of hope for our future and expresses the desire to
follow your dreams: "Let me run through a field in the night, Let me lift from the ground 'till my
soul is in flight."
