PROGRAM
8:30 AM
by SCLOrk
This quarter, the Laptop Orchestra class unusually met very early in the
morning, every Tuesday and Thursday at 8:30 A.M. The class was hybrid,
meaning we met several times over Zoom, and a number of times in per-
son in this concert hall. Rehearsing music barely out of our bedrooms
(some even *from* their bedrooms when over Zoom) gave some of our
playing a distinctive meditative (some might say sleepy), ambient charac-
ter. We found help in Brian Eno's "Oblique Strategies" cards, using them
as a morning ritual to inspire and ease us into performing together. (You
should have received one of these cards along with this program; feel
free to use it as you see fit to guide your listening tonight). This piece is
intended as a soft welcome to our audience, an invitation to gently tune
and wake up your ears to the rest of tonight's program.
Intersections
by James Dameris, Nathan Burke, Raghav Kapoor
Intersections depicts the life experiences of individuals as a roller coaster
of wins and losses, peace and chaos, and certainty and uncertainty. Given
how uncertain each of these transitions can be, we seek to encapsulate
the abruptness of change and how chaos can come to overwhelm many
of us in this continuous back and forth oscillation between calm and ca-
l2amity.
Coastal Connections
by Josh Mitchell, Colleen Sinnott, Oscar Shub
Coastal Connections explores a sonic realm that bridges bustling New
York City and the foggy Bay Area. We all experience home differently,
and we aim to represent these diverse experiences by placing the sounds
of our homes in conversation with each other. Through this conversation,
we’re investigating home as a feeling and a place, as well as the dichotomy
between good and bad changes in our homes.
Arrières-Pensées
by Fran Bertotti-Metoyer, Sophia Flores, Simon Lanzoni
Inspired by Yves Tanguy’s painting, Arrières-Pensées, this piece seeks
to translate the emotion of Tanguy’s original work from the visual to the
sonic medium. As an important figure in the surrealist movement, Tan-
guy’s paintings explored the mysteries of the unconscious mind and its
relation to the human experience. Thus, through various soundscapes we
have sought to create an accompaniment to Tanguy’s visuals, which when
experienced simultaneously, could foster an immersive journey into the
depths of the human psyche.
Wake Up Part 3
by Jia Seow, Aastha Chawla, Michael Noonan
This is the third installment of Wake Up, a series of pieces about waking
up to the realities of our world. From navigating a “new normal” to facing
the consequences of climate change, we hope our piece will be an un-
listenable cacophony of destruction and endings.
Genetically Modified Orchestra
by SCLOrk
From goats to trumpets to creepy toys, this piece thrives on the sheer joy
of playing with sound samples as the main musical instrument; the play-
fulness of unexpected transformations and sonic combinations; the fun
of exploring the far corners of our imagination when driven purely by our
ears and not our eyes. Whether you come up with an elaborate dream-
like storyline to follow along, or simply dive into the sounds as beautiful
abstractions, we hope you will enjoy listening to this piece as much as we
enjoy playing it. 3
SCLOrk (the Santa Clara Laptop Orchestra) is an innovative ensemble
of up to sixteen players dedicated to the creation and performance
of live electronic music. Created in the Spring of 2012 by SCU faculty
Bruno Ruviaro and students, this interdisciplinary group explores the
intersection of music composition, live performance, human-computer
interaction, programming, and sound design, with emphasis on musical
creativity based on cutting-edge technologies.
