TEXTS AND TRANSLATIONS
Super Flumina Babylonis By the waters of Babylon
(Psalm 136) we sat down and wept:
Super flumina Babylonis when we remembered thee, O
illic sedimus eet flevimus, Zion.
dum recordaremur Sion. As for our harps, upon the trees
In salicibus in medio ejus we hanged them up.
Suspendimus organa nostra
Le Pont Mirabeau Under Mirabeau Bridge the Seine
(Guillaume Apollinaire; Translated slips away
by Nancy Naomi Carlson)
Sous le pont Mirabeau coule la And our love
Seine Must I remember again
Joy would always follow pain
Et nos amours
Faut-il qu’il m’en souvienne Let night come and the hour
La joie venait toujours après la chime
peine Days go by and I’m left
behind
Vienne la nuit sonne l’heure
Les jours s’en vont je de-
meure
[Les mains dans les mains restons Hand in hand, let’s remain face to
face à face face
Tandis que sous While beneath
Le pont de nos bras passe The bridge our arms make
Des éternels regards l’onde si lasse Pass weary waves of our endless
gaze
Vienne la nuit sonne l’heure Let night come and the hour
Les jours s’en vont je de- chime
meure]* Days go by and I’m left
behind
L’amour s’en va comme cette eau Love goes by like this river’s flow
courante Love goes by
L’amour s’en va Oh how life is slow
Comme la vie est lente And how violent is Hope
Et comme l’Espérance est violente
Vienne la nuit sonne l’heure Let night come and the hour
Les jours s’en vont je chime
demeure Days go by and I’m left
4 behind

setting Light,
Lux Aurumque (Edward Esch; warm and heavy as pure gold
Translated by Charles Anthony and angels sing softly
Silvestri) to the new-born babe.
Lux, Evening darkness overtook me
calida gravisque pura velut aurum near the woods;
et canunt angeli molliter I have put my coat under my head
modo natum. (i.e. as a pillow),
Esti Dal (Anonymous Hungarian) I have put my hands together
Erdő mellett est vélëdtem, To pray to the Lord, like this:
Subám fejem alá tëttem,
Összetëttem két kezemet,
Úgy kértem jó Istenëmet:
Én Istenëm, adjál szállást, Oh, my Lord, give me a place to
Már mëguntam a járkálást, sleep,
a bujdosást, I am weary with wandering,
Az idegën földön lakást. With walking around and hiding,
With living on foreign land.
Adjon Isten jó éjszakát, May Lord give me a good night,
Küldje hozzám szent angyalát,\: May he send me a holy angel:
Bátoritsa szívünk álmát; May he encourage our hearts’
Adjon Isten jó éjszakát! dreams;
May he give us a good night!
