SETTING THE SCENE

As wildfires rage through rural California, Amber and her 13-year-
old daughter, Kaylee, find refuge in a devoutly religious man. When
Amber’s 20-year-old daughter, Dani, returns home to find her family’s life
transformed, she senses in her mother’s new male companion a danger
more imminent than the fires outside.
A rural pocket of California. From stage left extends the inside of
a rundown trailer, with a kitchen and a living room. A TV sits in the cen-
ter of the living room. Two bedrooms and a bathroom offstage from the
living room. “the landscape” - Around the trailer, burnt trees and piles of
ash and debris. Two tree stumps representing the driver and passenger
seats of a car. A brick chimney. And somewhere in the destruction, a lone
bed and a lamp.

This play discusses sexual violence and loss; recommended for ages 12+
Approximate running time is one hour and forty minutes.
There will be no intermission.
Each live performance will be followed by a live Talkback with Director, Tracy
Ward and cast as they are able.
The production will also be available to stream from March 3-7, 2021.

DIRECTOR’S NOTES

How prescient is a play that is centered on competing primal
forces: Nature and Survival? While the world around us is changing due
to our insistence on a way of life that poses an existential threat- the
private world, too, has its own survival demands. So it is that Amber and
her daughters each struggle with their own questions and choices about
survival while the world outside is, in contrast and synchrony, showing
the repercussions of our choices.
Julianne Jigour has posed essential questions in Three Women
in a Wildfire that tie the lives of the characters to their rapidly shifting
environment(s); from the tender hearted to the savage. Questions we
are all reckoning with as our worlds (inner and outer) are now more than
ever at war with each other. This is the fight of our times.
