A NOTE FROM THE DIRECTORS

Being the avid theatre-goer that you are, you have no doubt
been welcomed back to live performance by now. Just in
case this is your first in-person experience in a while, let
us say, “Great to have you back!” But an equally warm and
no less heartfelt, “Welcome back,” has to go to our student
performers. The last in-person musical done by the SCU
Department of Theatre and Dance was The 25th Annual Putnam
County Spelling Bee, way back in the winter of 2019! Three
students from that show appear in Sister Act. Beyond that,
no one you see has ever performed in a musical in Mayer
Theatre! So instead of “Welcome Back” we should say…no…
we really should shout… “Congratulations and welcome to
the stage!”

After a couple of years of pandemic, which included many
online classes, several virtual productions and countless long
school days in front of screens, we had two important goals
in producing Sister Act: 1) let as many students as we could
possibly fit on the stage perform safely and in person and 2)
have as much fun as we could while doing it. As if sent from
heaven, Sister Act has allowed us to do both. Throughout the
innumerable hours of rehearsal, all the lines learned, songs
sung and dances danced, we prayed to stay healthy and
counted our blessings every step of way.

While we remember those touched by Covid 19, we celebrate
the renewal of human interaction and revel in the feeling of
community that live theatre helps us achieve. While we don’t
really know where we stand with this pandemic, it seems
as if people are heading back to the theatre and other live
entertainment, as well as restaurants, malls and airplanes.
It’s probably too soon to declare this time a new “Roaring
20s,” but as you watch Sister Act, we hope you party like it’s
1999! (Make that 1977, when the action takes place.)

Please enjoy Sister Act and the divine work of our students!

-Jeff and Pauline 7
