DIRECTOR’S NOTES

We started with a blank page. A blank screen. We started with a ques-
tion: What is happening to our home? We added other questions: What
is happening now? And now? A time constraint. During the winter
quarter we met twice a week to write, to talk, to find the next question.
The We: Ana, Isaac, Juliet, Kyler, Maggie, Brian. We looked in and wrote
from the personal. We looked out and wrote from the world. We at-
tempted to navigate the space between, what the poet Carolyn Forche
calls ‘the social.’ We wrote directly into the climate crisis, and around,
and through. We made a first draft week seven. It didn’t work. We went
back to writing, to talking, to finding questions. We made another draft
week nine and ten. Better? In the spring we took this draft into rehears-
al. The ‘we’ expanded to include Carolyn, our OBS Goddess, who moved
our words from the page to the screen. This piece would not have been
possible without the expertise, patience, time, and insight that Carolyn
brought to the project. A deep bow. Patt, Jerry, Derek, Chris and Heath-
er joined our conversation, blessing us with their magic. New folx, new
ideas, new conversations.’ A momentary shift to the ‘I’: Ana, Isaac, Juliet,
Maggie and Kyler have made directing a never ending joy. A second
deep bow. Over the course of the past five weeks we’ve gathered the
disparate elements – the words, the sounds, the visuals – and put them in
conversation. That conversation became pushing into the blue. We’re still
talking as you read this note.
