EDITOR’S LETTER
Glenda Bailey embraces
the new season Is there anything better than whiling away the
precious days of summer? Hardly. One thing to think
about as you take in the sun and surf is your own
personal style because, sartorially speaking, a
new season of looks is upon us, and the best pieces for
fall are in stores now. And what a season it is. In this era of rampant
individualism, there are plenty of options to embrace. It goes
without saying that no one experiments with personal style better than this
month’s cover star, Gwen Stefani, who oozes chicness whether
wearing her rock ’n’ roll–infused line L.A.M.B. or a glorious
sequined gown from Dolce & Gabbana.
She puts on a brave front too, revealing to our own Laura Brown how
she survived the emotional roller coaster of a very public split with her husband of
13 years, Gavin Rossdale, while raising their three young sons, only to find love again
and land at the top of the pop—and country music!—charts.Elsewhere, model-actress
Emily Ratajkowski bares her soul (and then some) in a heart-to-heart with
author Naomi Wolf. The two cover the current state of feminism, that infamous
Kim Kardashian selfie, and Ratajkowski’s unwillingness to be
categorized.Valentino’s Pierpaolo Piccioli and Maria Grazia Chiuri
also face off, in the most charming way, by testing their knowledge of each other,
game show–style. The longtime collaborators are as delightful as they are talented—their
gorgeous fall collection was awash in neutral shades like camel, which, as you’ll
also see in this issue, is one of the colors of the season.
Brocade is big this fall too. Just look at our sunny
shoot in California’s Mojave Desert to see the
fabric really shine. In The List, you’ll discover what to
keep and what to store, the must-have bags and shoes
of the moment, and the world according to Dries
Van Noten. Funky, full-on prints, menswear with a
twist, bouquets of bright floral patterns—it’s all for the
taking.Whatever style path you choose to tread, you can do
no wrong. Let this issue be your guide to what’s
next. I hope it will inspire as much as
that idyllic summer holiday.
