Clarke Memories: The ZONE; flashing signals from MBH windows to the
Loras guys in North Hall; Dora Lam from Macna, who said I looked Portuguese;
incomparable roommates, Mariclare Costello and Pat Strouhal; that speech prof.
who called alphabetically “first AID and then (Shirley) BLOOD”; Keying trees,
cutting up frogs, beginning to become a writer…

What I’ve been up to: 34 years as a BVM sister; college prof. in Dubuque,
Miami, San Antonio; literacy in San Antonio and in Quito, Ecuador, with Gadget;
graduate degrees in Spanish at Iowa and Georgetown, where I found a friend for
life, Padraig MacEinre, Irish Franciscan Friar. We married in 1990. Padraig moved
on to heaven in 2003. Here and now I read, write, tend a food pantry and thrift
store, serve as a Board member for Head Start, and embrace the Border culture of
the Rio Grande Valley.

Clarke Memories: What I remember about Clarke and our class of about 44
girls on a hill near the Mississippi River is how much there was to learn there, and
how much fun it was to learn. It was cold sometimes, and lonely sometimes, but
it was always beautiful. I learned so much from you, my fellow classmates, my
roommates, dorm mates, and major mates. My eyes were opened to so many
things: your classical music, your West Side Story, your fashion, your art, your
paintings, your food, your jokes, your tricks, your poems, your stories, your songs,
your performances, your sorrows and your souls. You are extraordinary girls! I
am so grateful to you all. Our teachers were amazing! Sr. Mary Xavier had us
all subscribe to Theatre Arts Magazine! Sr. James Ann produced huge art exhibits
outside on the lawn! My education at Clarke was fantastic - acting, directing, stage
managing, lighting, sets, sound, Shakespeare, Kabuki, Eugene O’Neill, the current
B’way plays, poetry - Dylan Thomas’ A Child’s Christmas in Wales - we did it all,
and so much more. I send you all my love. I wish I could be there - maybe next
year.

What I’ve been up to: Since graduating from the stage of Terence Donaghoe
Hall 50 years ago, I‘ve continued to work in the theatre; in big theaters, little
theaters; long runs, and flops, for money and for no money; on B’way, off-B’way,

off-off -B’way, in repertory companies and regional theatres; toured the East,
West, Midwest and Europe; indoors, outdoors, in B’way houses, black boxes,
Masonic temples, gyms and cabarets; made commercials, T.V. shows, films, taught
and directed in my daughter’s grade school and high school and now at Loyola
Marymount University in Los Angeles. My husband, Allan Arbus is an actor and our
daughter Arin is directing plays in New York City.

What I’ve been up to: Clarke has been “home” to me for over 50 years: four
years as an undergraduate and I am beginning my 47th year of teaching and
directing here. It’s been painful (watching the fire of 1984) and very rewarding
(witnessing the growth of the College and seeing theatre graduates doing so well).
I’ve had the opportunity to direct some professional productions at the Uniform
Theatre in Kansas City and did Virginia Woolf at the University of Kansas and
Happy Days at Brandeis. But my heart always returns me to Terence Donaghoe
Hall. Life has been good to me. I was especially graced to receive the Kennedy
Center Medallion for continued artistic excellence and the National Silver Medal as
Teacher of the Year. Who would have “thunk”?

Clarke Memories: One of the most meaningful experiences for me at Clarke
was being educated under an honor system. This gave me a deep sense of my
own integrity and a basic trust in others that became part of who I am. And,
I remember the 1st rate faculty, the quality of the classes, and especially the
personal concern for me by my teachers and counselors. My excellent liberal
arts education has served me well through all my endeavors all these years. I
remember dear friendships, especially Roseanne and Pat Ann who have now
passed. Remembering fun times in Beta Commons and spaghetti dinners in the
kitchette. Lots of memories—this is probably already too long!

What I’ve been up to: How to sum up 50 years?! In the early years I took
graduate classes, taught biology, anatomy, in gifted programs, and art education.
Since ‘70, I’ve been a yoga instructor, in the 80s added a nutrition education
(specializing in vegetarian nutrition) and in the 90s facilitated meditation groups. In
this new millennium I live in the northwoods of Wisconsin on a lake, with my husband.
I’m a docent at the Natural History Museum in our town of Cable, and continue to
be engaged with yoga and meditation groups.

Family Updates: Angelo and I celebrated our 48th wedding anniversary this
year. We have a son Michael—he and his wife have 2 children: Amanda, 16
and Ben, 14. Our daughter Laurey (her husband, Chris, died in 2006) has 2 girls:
Marlee, 15 and Margaret, 7. They all live in St. Charles, Illinois and we visit them
often! And, of course, they enjoy traveling north to visit us!

Clarke memories: So many great teachers. So much talent among our class
leaders. So much fun in the dorms. Walking the tunnel between buildings. A very
cohesive, caring class. I remember the picnics, plays, and singing. Dashing to class,
meals (sit down) and Sunday mass. “Would anyone like a P & J sandwich with some
jello for lunch?”

What I’ve been up to: Thanks to Shirley Blood Ruedy, our class correspondent &
journalist, I have this “last chance” to update for our 50th reunion. While I haven’t
managed the achievements that many of you have, I have been blessed in many
ways over the years.

Although I had always hoped to attend our 50th reunion, I chose instead to visit my
Iowa cousins, sister-in-law and her family early in September, after an 11 to 12
year absence. My first cousin, Joan Mangold Grissom and her husband, Walt, were
in from Utah that week. Her mother, Blanche McEnany Mangold, graduated cum
laude in one of the first college graduating class from Clarke. My cousin, Patricia
Mangold Duggan, did the same in the 40’s. Other cousins and aunts also attended
Clarke for one or two years.

The week was too short but highly satisfying, spent briefly in Cedar Rapids, Ryan &
Dubuque. We wished for more time, but made the most of what we had with visits
till 1 a.m. and later most nights. One of its delights was recognizing and visiting
with Sister Mary Bryant. Do you remember her, sweet and humble in her brilliance
as the youngest professor at Clarke? My sister-in-law, Ruth McEnany, widowed,
1987, was giving me an evening tour of west Dubuque, especially Mt. Carmel
where I had spent a year, 1960-61. We saw two sisters walking on the front drive,
and she jokingly said they might be two of my friends. We pulled up to ask their
names and as they turned, I instantly recognized the sweet smile of Sister Mary

Bryant. We talked for half an hour with her and her companion who had grown up
in California and had taught in Arizona, my original home state.

Though I worked briefly other places, most of my time has been spent as a teacher.
I taught high school English before marrying, did some substitute work at our parish
school when the kids were young, and in ‘84 returned full time as a 7th, 8th grade
teacher of social studies at another parochial school. After retiring in 2001, I did
a year with GED and a little substituting, but devoted more time at home with home
with Pat. My main side interests through the years were pregnancy care (originally
known as Birthright), and later, a hot meal program as part of our parish social
concerns committee. My friend and I headed our parish volunteerswho took turns
with other parishes, cooking and serving at a downtown parish. What fun! We
both gave it up in ‘04 when our husbands’ health coincidentally took a steep turn
down, but it continues under very capable, younger hands.
My husband of almost 49 years, Patrick, died May 23, after an heroic battle
with ventricular tachicardia and chronic bronchitis. Although his health problems
surfaced years ago, he wasn’t fully diagnosed until the mid-90s, received a
defibrillator and portable oxygen in ‘96, and remained active until ‘04. After
an especially hard kick from his defibrillator, he was knocked down and out. He
became increasingly bed-ridden and familiar with Akron General Hospital. Easter
Monday, ER took him back. We spent 2 weeks at the hospital, 2 weeks at Hospice
(we have a wonderful one), and two weeks at home. What he kept throughout
his increased pain, was his sense of humor and his appreciation of any help given
him. He was known as a sweet patient to all medical staff and even managed a
joke with our pastor, Fr. McCann, who came for last rites at 2:30 one morning. Pat
received last rites 3x from 3 different priests during those 6 weeks, and I joked that
if that didn’t get him through the gates, nothing would. All of us were with him for
his passing; reminiscing, laughing, crying, and each praying in our own way. We
made sure that his calling hours & funeral Mass were beautiful and reflected both
Patrick and the things that were most important to him. He was a man, not a god,
and had his faults as we all do, but family and home were his prime concerns. He
was a tender heart; his best legacy to his children, responsibility and love for all
God’s creatures, especially the little ones.

I am most grateful for my children. Matthew returned from California in ‘01 to help
with his dad, giving him not only physical and moral support, but providing him with
much laughter and male camaraderie when home from work. Cecilia returned
from Maryland in ‘06 to help, while encountering her own unexpected and very
severe Graves disease (hyper-thyroid condition and removal.) She works and lives
nearby, and gives me my daily dose of best girlfriend exchanges. Emmet flew in
from California in mid-March, and blessed me with his stay until late August. He is
into all things healthy, including organic food, Yoga and Tai Chi. He and Glenn, in
from Michigan, converted our house into laptop, cell phone and land lines heaven
to do business, and we have all taken turns playing with Glenn’s sweet Yellow Lab,
Mokluba.

I am also grateful for the quality teaching and love shown me by the BVMs at St.
Francis Xavier in Phoenix for half of my grade school and high school years, Clarke
and Mt. Carmel. My biggest regret is that Pat and I didn’t reach that point where
I could give back financially for the great gifts they gave me. Finally, I’m grateful
for the friends I made at Clarke. We had such fun and so many of you were
outstanding. The person I most admired was Patricia Holmes, how indomitable and
caring was she? Perhaps now, with more time and e-mails, I can re-connect with
some of you who are still available. Nan, Pat, Marty, Mary Jo, Mary, are you still
there? Shirley, I’m so glad you are. All of you who can make it, have a wonderful
50th. Rosaleen

Clarke Memories: Fifty years ago, who knew what the Clarke Girls, Class of ’58,
would accomplish in their lives???? We were so fortunate to have grown up in such
a protected, nurturing environment…in a world of amazing calm and innocence.
Life really WAS simpler then. (Is that what all the “golden oldies” say as they
approach their 50th college reunions?????) I still have such fond memories of the
old chapel with the side pews, filled with the “sepulchered nuns,” and the formal
ranks that marched us penguin style down the aisle monthly for Sunday Mass.
And oh! the jubilation when Bermuda shorts were allowed on the tennis courts. A
proper Clarke girl would never be without her “foundation” when out in public!
(My husband still teases me about having to have my foundation on to take out the
garbage!!!!)

What I’ve been up to: But, for the overview of my life for the past 50+ years,
I must begin at the beginning…..Between freshman-sophomore year at Clarke, my
parents and I crossed the Atlantic on the QE I ….and on that ship, in the middle
of the ocean, a fine young man from the University of Michigan just happened to
ask me to dance. Our paths didn’t exactly cross with ease…it was the age before
freeways …but Phil Brown and I fell in love and managed to bridge the miles ‘twist
Dubuque and Ann Arbor. After 4 years, we finally decided we knew each other
well enough to get married… Not really… but our leap of faith was supported
by lots of love and prayers, which obviously paid off since we are anticipating our
50th wedding anniversary next year! After teaching in Davenport, IA for a year,
Phil and I were married in Ottawa, Ill., moved to Eureka ,Calif. for the first year
of wedded bliss, and then moved to Phil’s hometown of Portland, OR where we

have lived ever since. (Portland is really a beautiful city …you should come visit
sometime!).

To stay out of mischief, I volunteer….a lot! Every Tuesday morning of the school
year is spent with the SMART kids; every Wednesday, I’m at the hospital as
Eucharistic minister. Thursdays are for Meals on Wheels and Catholic Charities
projects. As I grow older (and it seems to be happening faster these days), my
Catholic faith grows more important in my life. I truly believe that the dedicated
BVMs I knew and loved at Clarke grounded me and helped me appreciate God’s
amazing gifts…in myself...and in others! And the Liberal Arts education I received
was a gift for life. God love those marvelous “Sister Marys”… and Clarke
College!!!!

I look forward to seeing all of us “old girls” together again in October ’08….and
to those who have already made their final journey, God bless you all…. till we
meet again!

Family Updates: The six little Brown babies began to arrive in late 1960,
and over the next 17 years, I was a stay-at-home mom. (3 girls in 3 years and 3
boys spread out over the next 14 years)!!! First-born Beth, lives in Portland and
is the mother of two VERY talented girls, if I do say so myself….Amy, engaged
for the first time at age 45, is the development director of SMART (Start Making
A Reader Today), a non-profit, state-wide program of 10,000 volunteers, who
read with K thru 2nd graders in the public schools ….Mary Frances, also a late-
bloomer, married at 40 for the first time 4 years ago and lives in Bellingham,
WA….Bowman, still looking for the love of his life, works and lives in Portland…
Tim married Kristina just 3 years ago and finally another grandbaby is coming (to
Seattle) in late October! O joy!!!! David and Anna are back in Portland after
Anna finished getting her nursing degree in home-town Boise, ID.
Phil just keeps on ticking!!!!!…He continues to work in his CPA firm, plays tennis and
golf with gusto, and is generally a really good guy…but I’m prejudiced, I admit it!

What I’ve been up to: Tony and I sold our home to our eldest daughter and
are enjoying life in a wonderful retirement community overlooking Lake Michigan.
We are fortunate to have all three daughters in close proximity. We have been
traveling a lot and are inspired to do more when we see friends’ health fail. We’re
“doing it while we can.”

Tony has been making art for the last several years and is presently represented
in two Milwaukee galleries and one in Door County. We still get a huge thrill when
a piece sells. He volunteers at the V.A. Hospital weekly, and I hope to start at

Columbia-St. Mary’s Hospital in the fall. I also get a lot of pleasure from playing
the piano on a regular basis for a senior singing group and an interdenominational
church service. We are looking forward to seeing everybody in October!

Clarke Memories: I remember a song our class sang at one of those traditional
senior events. I guess we’ve probably grown into it now!
The Old Girls, the Old Girls,
We’re finished but not about to fold girls.
We pack a little wallop, we’ve got a little pep,
We limp a bit in formal ranks but still we keep in step.

We used to hop and skip and jump,
We used to hike and swim.
But now our hop’s a thump, our skip is just a skim.
We hardly know our way across the street to find the gym…

Guess you’re right, but please address us as the
Not so old Old Girls!

What I’ve been up to: I have utilized my English major and music minor in my
career as—an accountant. Let’s hear it for liberal arts! I’m in my 25th year with
Wolf & Company LLP in Oak Brook, IL. It’s a great place to work and I still actually
enjoy tax season. Aside from reading and various needle work projects, I don’t
have a good set of retirement skills, so I’m planning to ride this one out as long as
it makes sense. John and I live a pretty tame “empty nester” life, enlivened with a
lot of Chicago theatre and flights to the East Coast where the kids have all located.
All in all, a good life!

Family Updates: One husband, three kids, four grandchildren. Maureen is a Girl
Scout executive in Washington DC; Karen is with Bank of America in NY (I frankly
don’t understand what she does); Brian is a comedy writer and actor with the Conan
O’Brien show, also in NY. The grandchildren are, of course, all wonderful, ranging
in age from 5 to 16. As long as the airlines don’t totally implode, we manage to
keep in touch pretty well. Thank heaven for email!

Clarke Memories: Playing BAD bridge!! Having my hair freeze in the winter as I
ran outside after swimming, all the way to the chem. lab. Most of all the wonderful
staff and student body.

What I’ve been up to: I retired from Neiman Marcus in May of ’04 but still go
in one day a week to help some clients. I read, knit, play golf and oh yes, the
SUDOKU.

Family Updates: The man I married 8 ½ years ago (my 1st husband died 10
years ago) has 5 children, 10 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren. I have
4 children, and 10 grandchildren. We think of it as a merger. So their visits and
our visiting them consumes a great deal of time. I am proud to say my oldest
granddaughter is a CPA with a fine job.

What I’ve been up to: Having been a performer for 45 years, I’m overloaded
with stories and feelings and relationships and events, most of which I can’t
remember! As a wise writer, Portia Nelson once said “My life has been a series of
fabulous events, it’s a pity I wasn’t there for most of them.” Those I do remember still
inform me and fill me with such a feeling of well being, that I’m sorry I can’t relive
them all...well, mostly all (there are some events I’d sooner keep tucked away, way
away, in the corners of my memory).

I now teach several performance classes, in LA, and often outside the city and state.
I have been teaching master classes in music theatre performance for the past five
years at places including University of Nevada, Las Vegas; University of California
Irvine, University of Southern California, University of California Los Angeles,
Baylor, University of Miami, Northwestern and Arizona State University.

And I hear myself talking about my past and my experiences; but I’m terribly
afraid I’ll sound like some old fart who needs to feed her ego. But nonetheless,
young performers today will have no way of knowing about their heritage except
from those who have been there; done that! Luckily I’m still being there and doing

that! Theatre, concerts, cabaret, commercials, and an occasional AUDITION! Yes, I
do have to go to an audition about once a year and I do it willingly only to keep
up to date on how it feels these days to be competitive and how the whole process
works. Many of my colleagues from the past are now big deal directors and
choreographers so it’s fun to show them, in some way, I’m still around and can still
sing. It keeps me in touch with the feelings my students have and I hope makes me a
better teacher.

I wish I could be there… but I have to conduct a music theatre seminar on the 3rd!
Rats!

Clarke Memories: My water ballet “Around the World in 80 Minutes” narrator
Karen Morrow. I had four roommates in four years: Barbara McClure, Marilyn
Wingert, Barbara Hughes and Shirley Blood.

What I’ve been up to: After my graduation from Clarke I accepted a teaching
position with the Chicago Public Schools to use both my art and my physical
education degrees. I have always felt “Creating art is joyous and thought
provoking experience.” Loyola University in Chicago is where I studied for a
master’s of education degree anticipating that I would eventually become a
principal. But along the way I met Ronald Nawrocki, married in 1963 and was
blessed with two lovely daughters and later four grandchildren. I continued
working in the art field as an artist member at a local art guild of which I
eventually became president. Between art exhibitions and my volunteer time at
local schools I started engaging in unique fabric painting, which led me to National
Embroidery Textile competition awards. I do compete in many art exhibits and
am on the boards of various organizations. At the present I am exhibiting in three
galleries in Illinois.

Time lapsed and I decided to RETURN as a student to The School of the Arts
Institute of Chicago where I studied to become an art therapist and graduated with
a master’s eegree in 1987. At Schwab Rehabilitation Hospital and Care Network
my work was with stroke, spinal cord and brain injured patients as an art therapist

with a team of psychologists, nurses, doctors, speech, occupational and physical
therapists. Although I am retired, I am involved with support groups for Brain Injury
Association of Illinois and Illinois Spinal Cord Injury Association as a board member.
As a member of the American Art Therapy Association I have helped promote art
therapy as an effective tool for many life concerns and the maintenance of quality
of life.

In July 2008, I had my first “one woman art show” at the Dupage Art Gallery. Life
has been good for me as an art therapist, artist, wife, mother, and grandmother. In
my art I use fiber to seek spiritual pathways and find corridors to enhance healing.
As an art therapist I believe in the creative process to enhance growth and enrich
life. As I think about my fifty year reunion, it makes me see how I minister to others
as Clarke College ministered to me. I am very grateful for my extensive education
in these hallowed halls.

Family Updates: Daughter Debbie and Jim Urani, grandchildren RJ Cage (age
7) and Michael John (age 3). Daughter Marcia and John Uerburgt, grandchildren

What I’ve been up to: After graduating from Clarke, I moved back to my
parents’ home in Cedar Rapids, IA. I taught 6th graders for two years at my alma
mater, Immaculate Conception School.

In the fall of 1960, I joined the Sisters of the Presentation in Dubuque, IA. My
middle grade teaching assignments were at St. Columbkille School, Dubuque, IA;
St. Germaine School, Oak Lawn, IL; and St. Joseph School, Farley, IA. In summer
schools at Iowa State University, I earned my master’s degree in elementary school
counseling.

In 1973, I received the baptism of the Holy Spirit and have remained active in the
Catholic Charismatic Renewal movement.

For five years I was secretary in the CCR office of the Milwaukee Archdiocese.
After leaving the Presentation community in 1977, I moved to Milwaukee, WI. Not
wanting to continue classroom teaching, I began working in offices and also in
tutoring programs. Now retired, I recently returned to Cedar Rapids. So life has
come almost full circle.

Clarke Memories: Lots of prompting from great teachers and lots of late night
studies - and that was good prep for late nights raising a family. Lots of true
friendships.

What I’ve been up to: Spending time with family and teaching. Since I stayed
home to raise my 8 children I was away from teaching for awhile. I currently am
teaching elementary special ed and loving it.

Family Updates: It’s been fun raising my 8 kids (2 boys, 6 girls), they are great
and have given me 17 grandkids. My children have provided me with several
cities to visit - three are in Lafayette, one in Indianapolis, one in Streator, IL, one in
Las Vegas, one in Boise, ID and one in Chicago. They have also provided me with
17 grandchildren and one great-granddaughter.

I look forward to seeing everyone in the fall.

Clarke Memories: I thoroughly enjoyed my years at Clarke. The honor system
was one of the great assets of Clarke. The friendly atmosphere was everywhere.
Two of my best friends at Clarke are still, after 50 years, my best friends. Above
all, I received a wonderful education. I was well prepared to face the world.

What I’ve been up to: After graduating, I started my teaching career in
Davenport, IA. I taught for 38 years, all of them except one, in Davenport. I

taught all the primary grades and 17 years in the Title I program. I received my
MA degree from the University of Iowa. I’ve taken many wonderful trips and am
getting ready to go on my 4th trip to Ireland on Oct. 15th. I have a couple of
volunteer jobs.
Family Updates: My two brothers are both married. I have 7 nieces and
nephews and 8 great nieces and nephews. They are pretty well scattered
throughout the country. All in all, it’s a great life.

Clarke Memories: My two years at Clarke left me with numerous positive
memories. As a student in the two year teaching program, Sister M. Rose taught
me organizational skills needed to run a large classroom. Sister M. Bryant was
instrumental in changing my attitude about science. I can not recall the name of
Clarke’s super swimming instructor (1954-56), but thanks to her, swimming has been
a favorite form of exercise since my Clarke College days!

What I’ve been up to: Teaching, marriage, four children, more teaching,
retirement! Fourteen years ago I retired and have enjoyed travel, tennis, swimming,
and keeping my finger in education by tutoring.

Family Updates: My husband and I are fortunate to have our adult children
living near-by. Although late in becoming grandparents, we are now blessed with a
two-year-old grandson and an infant granddaughter.

Clarke Memories: I value the superb Clarke education and remember excellent
tea hers and friends who enriched my life.

What I’ve been up to: This is my rest era because of major back surgeries. I
have been a teacher- paid and volunteer. I organized and taught religious
education. My position as first woman on the city parks commission led to a bond
issue and master plan. This plan continues to add trails and parks in Woodbury. I
was fortunate to attend the first workshop at St. John’s University led by Donald
Jackson. Other teachers enriched me and I taught this skill.

Family Updates: Paul and I had three girls and one boy- all were national merit
scholars. We have seven grandchildren.
