Technology and Service (Health, Education, Employment and

7-8
Go Red for Women the National Association to hold club programs. For a club to be
9
Committee News 10 compliant, we must have at least one (1) program in each of the
New & Reclaimed 11 areas. There are many components that must work smoothly

13 within our club to accomplish these goals and we believe that we Charmaine Traylor,
Women’s History 14 can do this, as attested by our past successes. However, as most President
Founder’s Day 15 of you know those successes do not all come easily. We must
Environmental 16 have participation from all members. Many challenges present NTBPWL, Inc.
Counter themselves to us along the way; some of them are difficult to deal 2015-2017
YOUTH: Teen Summit with, i.e. time, family, work, scheduling conflicts. Yet, if each of our
Feed The City

and get the programs done.
A Sister’s Story
We are now preparing to participate in the 55th District Conference held Friday and Saturday,
81st Nat’l Convention March 3rd and 4th at the East Dallas Christian Church 629 North Peak Street Dallas, Texas. We
encourage all members to attend. The theme is “Moving Forward with a Purpose: Building on
the Future”. This is a Mini-Conference because we will have our 81st National Convention on
Monday, July 17th – Sunday, July 23rd at the Renaissance Worthington Hotel in Ft. Worth. This
is the ideal year to participate in both because we are lucky that they are in the DFW area.
Calendar 17 We propelled forward in the New Year with more of our programs:

January 14th – North Texas Food Bank
February 3rd – American Heart Association Luncheon

“Hidden Figures” and NASA’s Black Female Pioneers
If you’re a person of color in America right now, it may feel like you’re riding a carousel of darkness. Viral
stories of black killings, once occasional events, morphed into déjà vu in 2016 - potentially triggering PTSD-
life trauma. The rise of the alt-right, a white nationalist movement, echoes sentiments of public segregation
on thought long gone.
Hidden Figures offers a counter-narrative of hope and a prescient blueprint for unity against what feels like a
vicious cycle of inequality. This bestselling biography-turned-Hollywood biopic reveals the untold story of
Katherine Johnson, Dorothy Vaughan, Mary Jackson and hundred of black female mathematicians who
made crucial contributions to America’s space program. Excerpts from Margot Lee Shetterly
Katherine Johnson Mary Jackson Dorothy Vaughan
“Became NASA 1st
Black female
engineer in 1958”
Katherine Johnson played by Taraji P. Henson
Mary Jackson played by Janelle Monae
Dorothy Vaughan played by Octavia Spencer
Former NASA mathematician Katherine Johnson

President Barack Obama
Exactly how many women computers worked at NACA (and later NASA) over the years
is still unknown. One 1992 study estimated the total topped several hundred
but other estimates says that number is in the thousands.

Go Red for Women
On Friday, February 3, 2107, the North Texas Business and Professional Women's League partnered
with the American Heart Association "Go Red" Luncheon Event held at the Omni Hotel in Dallas.
Club Sister Dr. Kim Washington was the catalyst behind our participation in the event as volunteers. Patty
Lynn volunteered in Silent Auction setup on Thursday night. On Friday Dr. Washington worked the VIP
Lounge. President Traylor and Murray Gray worked the Silent Auction. Liz Richardson & Marilyn Calhoun
worked Healthy Cooking Seminar. I volunteered for clean-up and breakdown of the Silent Auction.
It was an awesome event and truly inspiring seeing all of the many women in a sea of "red" joined together
for one truly amazing and worthwhile cause.
Later that evening, President Charmaine Traylor along with 1st Vice President Dr. Jeanine Thomas and her
mother Sally London, Melody Burks along with her guest, Donna Jackson, Tunita Bailey and I, attended the
NTL "Go Red" dinner at Breadwinners in Uptown Dallas on McKinney for an evening of dinner and
fellowship.

ENVIRONMENTAL CORNER - OUR Environment
Choose clean, take action
Keeping North Texas waterways clean is something we all want. It’s a simple
choice that takes some simple actions. Here are a few to get you started:
Reverse Litter. Clean out your car. Pick up the trash that seems to linger after
every kids’ sporting event. Don’t throw litter in the back of your pick-up. Go the
extra few steps to find a trash can or recycle bin.
Car Care. Wash your car at a commercial car wash – even biodegradable soaps
are toxic to fish and wildlife. Recycle by taking used oil and anti-freeze to a re-
pair shop. Take care of car leaks as soon as possible. Use absorbent materials
that can be thrown away instead of “hosing down.”
Lawn and Landscape Care. Use a mulching mower or blade and leave grass clip-
pings on the lawn. Or try composting them to produce a nutrient rich soil mulch.
Don’t blow or sweep yard waste down a storm drain. Pick up after your pets.
Pesticides & Fertilizers. Use chemical pesticides as a last resort. Pesticides can
kill creatures that benefit the environment, as well. Apply recommended
amounts – twice as much does not do twice the job. Use slow release fertiliz-
ers. Don’t apply before it rains – chemicals may be washed down a storm drain
and become a serious threat to creeks and wildlife.
Household products. Read the label and follow directions for proper use and dis-
posal. Purchase effective non-toxic, biodegradable, and recyclable products.
Buy only the amount you need. Clean paint brushes (latex, or water-based
paints) in the sink, not the street. Landfills are not designed for household
chemicals – take unused portions to a chemical collection center or a house-
hold hazardous waste collection event.
