LadyBuzz News The Ladybugs

This November has proved to be very busy for the League Ladies as well as informative.

During our November meeting we were given a presentation on HIV, AIDS and STD’s.
The presentation was wonderful and scary at the same time.

Power of our Dollars came just in time for holiday shopping. As you are picking up gifts and things,
please try to shop within our community and save the receipts.

This is a National Program geared toward Economic Development.

Please remember our Vocal Arts Program will take place on December 4
at the East Dallas Christian Church; please remember we need all League Ladies to help.
This program will be great and I encourage you to invite plenty of people as I am sure they will enjoy it.

Please continue to pray for Lady Cook-Johnson and Baby Johnson.
She, as well as the League Ladies, is very excited about our “first League baby”.

Also please congratulate Dr. Constance Bennett;
she was awarded the El Centro Adjunct Faculty Excellence in Teaching Award.

This is a great accomplishment and is well-deserved.

Honoring Our Right to VOTE

Election Day 2010 was taken very seriously by our league ladies.
We recognize the importance of honoring what our ancestors fought
so hard for, and many even gave their lives for.

Some of us got very creative with getting our family, friends,
neighbors and others out to vote.

President Gossip encouraged us to cast our vote on every occasion
and opportunity. Her October 28th message to us was: Our Vote
is Our Voice! With our election slowly approaching, let’s encourage
our friends and families to VOTE. When we exercise our right to
Vote, we become a part of the solution to make our community
better. The subject of her Tuesday Mail on November 2nd was
VOTE! VOTE! VOTE!

Patty Lynn got creative too. She reports that she and several league ladies volunteered for the two week early
voting and on Election Day. The ladies made calls and carpooled some of the voters to the polls. She said her
mother would gather the family together to go vote and that this year, even though she was not here with them,
they still had “Mammaw’s Family Voting Day”. They picked up family members and voted as a family tradition to
honor their mother.

I, Geneva Hamilton, got creative. My sister-in-law and I took my twins to lunch for their 24th birthday and after
lunch we all got in the car and I drove us all directly to a voting precinct. Yes, they thought I was a bit weird but
we got it done.

We must continue to exercise our right to vote both as African-Americans and as women because incredible
sacrifices were and are STILL being made for us to have that freedom.

Our local votes helped Democratic incumbent Craig Watkins defeat Republican challenger Danny Clancy in the
Dallas County district attorney race. Clancy had a slight lead much of the night, but Watkins pulled in front as
votes were tallied three hours after polls closed. Final vote counts show Watkins with 208,222 votes - 50.64
percent and Clancy with 202,974 – 49.36 percent.

As you can see, every vote really does count!

SO EVERY OPPORTUNITY YOU GET, PLEASE

VOTE, IT COUNTS!

Walking in My Shoes! Challenge

According to the Feeding America Hunger Study, more people are seeking emergency assistance by applying
for SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program – previously known as food stamps). The segments of
our population most needing assistance are approximately 14 million children and 2 million senior citizens.

League members, the Health Committee has committed the membership of the North Texas League to taking on
the Walking in my Shoes! challenge by living on $6.67 per day for food and drinks for one week ($46.69 of food
and drinks only). You can use the spices that you already have on hand, but not any previously purchased food
or drinks.

We can blog our experiences on http://texasfoodstampschallenge.wordpress.com or post them on
Facebook, Twitter, or MySpace.

MY RESULTS: Ladies, I took the “Walking in my Shoes” challenge the first week of October. I purchased my
food and planned my meals for the week. A family of two or three can survive on $6.67 per day. The family can
plan the menu for the week before purchasing the food. The family cannot go out to eat on this budget. This
challenge will bring back the “family meal time”. My husband and I prepared different menus for this challenge.
Some meals lasted two days. The leftovers can be changed into another meal. The holiday season is the
hardest time for the Food Bank. Please bring your donations to the November meeting. I will take the food to
the Food Bank on November 22nd. We will have another food drive on December 6th . I can meet you to pick
up the food on December 6th because Lady Gray and I will take the food to the Food Bank on December 8th.

I would like to “Thank you” in advance for taking the challenge and assisting with the food drive. This challenge
was an “eye-opener” for me because it helped me remember how much fun we had at meal time with our family.
I also lost two pounds by preparing my meals according to some of the menus provided by Dr. Kandice Farmer
and Lady Elizabeth Richardson’s Wellness Program.

Food Drive for November and December 2010. Please bring your can goods for the food drive on November
20th for the General Meeting. If you cannot attend the meeting on November 20th, call me and I will pick them
up. The next food pick is December 6th.

The date for our Volunteer Day at the Food Bank is May 14, 2011. Please note on your event calendar. We
have committed to 10 adults and our youth. We will need one adult for every five to seven youth. (See Notes
below from Sophie and Paige at the Food Bank)
