10 Myths and Realities of Goal-Setting
Courtesy of gotresolutions.com
Myth #1: Goal Setting is Not That Important.
Reality: Success Requires Goals - End of Story! A life of meaning needs goals and specific plans to achieve them.
Success does not happen by accident.
Myth #2: Goal Setting is Difficult and Takes Too Much Time.
Reality: Performance is accelerated by time invested in strategy. The game of life is won behind the scenes, in time
spent on preparation.
Myth #3: New Years is the Best Time To Set Goals.
Reality: There’s no better time than now to take control of your life. Goal-Setting is not about timing it’s about
decision. This life is not a dress rehearsal; it’s the only one you’ve got.
Myth #4: Goal Don’t Need To Be Written- Keep Them in Your Head.
Reality: Written goals clarify thinking, objectify their potential, and reinforce commitment. The palest ink is better
than the strongest memory. Goals once out of site soon become goals out of mind!
Myth #5: Long-Term Planning Is A Waste of Time.
Reality: Your Future deserves consideration. It will someday be your present reality. It’s worth considering
seriously.
Myth #6: A Good Plan Is All You Need To Be Successful.
Reality: Success is active, not passive. All plans require action. Preparation is no substitute for action. Commit to
the philosophy of implement now - perfect later.
Myth #7: The Best Way To Achieve a Goal Is To Just Begin.
Reality: Action without planning is the root cause of most failure. Success is a choice. With a plan to lead you, you
can figure out how to get where you are going.
Myth #8: All It Takes Is Hard Work To Achieve Your Goals.
Reality: Hard work is important, but working smart is mandatory. Quit trying harder, look for new solution, and you
will accomplish far more in far less tine with only a fraction of the effort you have been giving.
Myth #9: I Can Do It On My Own. I Don’t Need Help.
Reality: Success requires cooperation. Nobody does it alone. In order to achieve more you must learn to help
yourself. Success requires the cooperation of others.
Myth #10: Goals Only Need To Be Reviewed Once a Year.
Reality: Inspect what you expect. Everything changes. Your goals must keep shaping, shifting and flexing to fit
these fast-changing times. Adopt a regular and consistent review process.

The Ten Commandments of Goal-Setting
1 . Thou Shalt Be Decisive
Success is a choice. You must decide what you want, why you want it, and how you plan to achieve it. No one
else can, will, or should do that for you.
2. Thou Shalt Stay Focused
A close relative to being decisive, but your ability to sustain your focus from beginning to end determines the
timing and condition of your outcomes.
3 . Thou Shalt Welcome Failure
The fundamental question is not whether you should accept failure. You have no choice but to expect it as a
temporary condition on the pathway of progress. Rather, the question is how to anticipate failure and redirect
resources to grow from the experience.
4 . Thou Shalt Write Down Thy Goals
Your mind, while blessed with permanent memory, is cursed with lousy recall. People forget things. Avoid the
temptation of being cute; Write down your goals.
5 . Thou Shalt Plan Thoroughly
Planning saves 10 to 1 in execution. Proper planning prevents poor performance.
6 . Thou Shalt Involve Others
Nobody goes through life alone. Establish your own “Personal Board of Directors”, people whose wisdom,
knowledge and character you respect to help you achieve your goals.
7. Thou Shalt Take Purposeful Action
Success is not a spectator sport - achievement demands action. You cannot expect to arrive at success without
having made the trip.
8 . Thou Shalt Reward Thyself
Rewards work! Think of what you will give yourself as a result of your hard work, focus and persistence - you
deserve it!
9 Thou Shalt Inspect What Thou Expect
The Shelf Life of all plans is limited. No plan holds up against opposition. Everything changes. Therefore, inspect
frequently and closely, it’s an insurance policy on your success.
1 0. Thou Shalt Maintain Personal Integrity
Maintain your commitment to your commitment. Set your goals, promise yourself that you will achieve them.
Eliminate wiggle room and excuses. That’s personal integrity!

PROGRAM NEWSROOM
Wow! January 2010…I well remember my Daddy saying “Baby, I can’t imagine what the world
will be like in 2000! He was born in 1928, and lived to see 1990. I share his feelings as I look at
the phenomenal work of the League in 2009 and what’s ahead for 2010.
League Ladies, you are indeed the “Notable North Texas League.” Activities for 2009 included:
September – League hosted a seminar presented by Ms. Rita Greer on Starting a
Business.
October – League supported and participated in the Susan Komen /Race for the Cure,
Health Committee coordinated a “Breast Cancer Awareness Program,” the Education
Committee facilitated our “Adopt-a-School Program”, the Membership Committee
held an “Information Gathering Session” for perspective new members and the
“Support Our Troops” program kicked off in high gear.
November – The Food Bank Drive Committee “Our Neighbor’s Friend” ensured families in
our community received meals for Thanksgiving, League Ladies sacrificially gave of
their holiday time to participate in “Support Our Troops” program the day before
Thanksgiving and the NTBPWL Program Outline was submitted on time and in order.
YEA!!! kicked off in high gear.
December – The Economic Development Committee enlighten the League on Black
Owned business in the Bishop Arts District, needless to say dollars were spent, The
Food Bank Committee extended themselves again for Christmas meals, the Support
Our Troops program had its largest turnout on Christmas Eve...yes, I said Christmas
eve. The Christmas Committee provided an elegant evening of great food, games and
friendship for the League Ladies and guest.
The Editor of the League’s newsletter the “Pathfinder” is doing an outstanding job in
documenting our history and keeping the League Ladies in check on submitting their
articles.
Please support each committee and the overall projects of the League. We need you more
than ever. The next 3-4 months will be filled with many activities in preparation for the League
to close out programs by April 30. We need a little time to relax. Remember, the National
Convention will be in Dallas for 2010 and as the host city our responsibilities will be greater.
Let’s roll up our sleeves and get to work for 2010. I know my Daddy is watching!

Bishop Arts District Day - Under Economic Development
Objective: To bring awareness of our Black Owned Businesses in the Dallas Bishop Arts District
with an opportunity to demonstrate the “Power of Our Dollars” the date of 12/19/09 was selected to
coincide with UJAMAA (Cooperative Economics) which is one of the seven principles of KWANZAA.
The Bishop Arts District has been revitalized and we, as a group, have made a big impact showing
our entrepreneurial spirit. We arrived hungry on Saturday, December 19th at Rush Patisseries, where
Samantha Rush is the Owner and Baker! She studied at the Le Cordon Bleu in Paris and we could
tell! We indulged in French coffee, wonderful pastries and croissants that were almost too pretty to eat
but we did anyway! We all vowed to return with family and friends; and some also made “to go” pur-
chases. After feasting, we left in a caravan to go SHOPPING! We visited Indigo 457, Xpressions
Boutique, Something for Everyone and I’m that Girl; we browsed, chatted, browsed some more and
spent, spent, spent!
Some ladies knew of the district and some did not, but whether you were getting to know the district or
a returning patron, we were all grateful to be spending time together while supporting these businesses.
Some ladies expressed the need to do this as an annual event and some would like this to be a semi-
annual event. I’m always open for shopping! We had a great time and had a wonderful turnout!

Forgive Them, And Let It Go
We talk about grudges the way we talk about babies. You can hold a grudge, carry a
grudge, bear a grudge, or nurse a grudge. The trouble is, when you nurse something you
feed it, make it grow, and pretty soon it's full grown.
Are you carrying a grudge? Why? It doesn't make sense. Why would you pick up
something each day that weighs you down and carry it around with you?
'But they hurt me.' Yes, but by carrying a grudge you enable them to keep hurting you.
Don't do that to yourself! We know we're supposed to forgive other people, but
sometimes forgiving feels like we are giving up something.
One of Lincoln's stories was about a man on his sickbed who had been told by the doctor
that he didn't have much time to live.
He summoned an old friend named Brown with whom he'd quarreled bitterly. They hadn't
spoken for years. The man talked of how he was going to die soon, of how their petty
differences looked in the face of death, and asked if they might be reconciled. The scene
moved everyone in the room to tears.
Brown clasped the dying man's hands, embraced him, and turned to walk out of the room,
a shattered man. Suddenly the man on the sickbed, having one final thought, raised
himself up on one elbow and spoke for the last time: 'But see here, Brown; if I recover,
the old grudge still stands.'
This story makes us smile and think, 'How foolish!' But if you are carrying a grudge, are
you any different?
Have a Blessed Month!

WHAT GIVES A PERSON THE RIGHT TO LEAD?
Having position, title, rank, degrees, or having been elected is
recognized by many as being an obvious right to lead, but it doesn't
qualify anyone to lead other people. The ability doesn't come
automatically with age or experience, either. The right and
qualification to lead can only be earned, and that takes time. Look for
the ten (10) excerpts here over the next few months taken from noted
Leadership Coach John Maxwell, that will give you keys to becoming
an effective leader. The first recommendation is to:
BE THE KIND OF LEADER OTHERS WANT TO FOLLOW –
They can trust you to take them or their organization where they want to go
They are confident that you will use and share your skills
They are assured that they can trust you with private information they may
have shared with you.
They can be sure that you will be loyal to them and the organization. [In
other words, you will not divulge internal information about them or the
organization to others outside of your group].
They know you will listen to all sides before making a decision.
BE THE KIND OF LEADER OTHERS WANT TO FOLLOW!
NEXT MONTH: LET GO OF YOUR EGO !

Vocal Arts Competition for Emerging Artists
In our January 23, 2010 General Meeting the North Texas League Vocal Arts program was presented. Youth Member
Brianna Sheppard provided us with a brief history of the NANBPWC, Inc. vocal arts competition involvement, and a brief
history of the League’s vocal arts competition involvement was provided by the Chair.
Based upon the recommendation of Miss Icy Simpson as our contestant, her CD of her performing two selections – I Want
Magic, from A Streetcar Named Desire; and His Name So Sweet – was presented for our hearing, and Miss Simpson was
enthusiastically accepted to represent the North Texas League in the SCD Vocal Arts Competition in Shreveport, LA in
March. Miss Simpson will certainly “bring home the Gold!” for the League, which will qualify her to compete in the
National Vocal Arts for Emerging Artists competition in Dallas in July, 2010.

ENVIRONMENTAL CORNER - OUR Environment
Six Top Idiot-Proof Eco-Tips
1. STOP IDLING
Idling for more than 10 seconds wastes more gas than is needed for startup. Americans idle away
2.9 billion gallons of gas a year, worth around $78.2 billion.
2. TURN OFF YOUR COMPUTER
Save energy and wear and tear on your computer by shutting it down at night. You’ll save on
average $90 of electricity a year
3. TURN DOWN THE THERMOSTAT
For every degree you lower the thermostat, you’ll save between 1 and 3% on your heating bill. Do
the same thing in reverse with air conditioning.
4. WASH YOUR LAUNDRY IN COLD WATER
Most loads don’t need hot water, and 90% of the energy used by washing machines goes into
heating. The higher the water temperature, the higher the cost to you and the planet.
5. PAY BILLS ONLINE
Save trees and eliminate the fossil fuel (needed to get all those billing envelopes from them to you
and back again). Plus you’ll save time and money (on late fees and stamps).
6. DITCH JUNK MAIL
Around 100 million trees and 29 billion gallons of water are used to send junk mail to Americans
every year, according to greendimes.com. You can stop 75% of unsolicited mail by registering on
the Mail Preference Service on the Direct Marketing Association Website (for a fee of $1). Within
90 days most unsolicited mail will stop!
