BOLO-BOLO

"There were tiny worms coming out

of the coconut shell that he (the


healer) used to cure me!"

I could still remember how jubilant


Tita Leonora was, when telling me

this. It was last year when she urged

to visit a "bolo-bolo" healer in Siquijor


as she could not resist the pain of

her aching tooth anymore.



BY: KRISSSTIAN In this traditional healing, water

serves as the main medium. It is

either contained in a coconut shell or

a glass. The healer then profoundly

recites prayers as he makes the


coconut shell or glass in contact with

the painful area of his patient.

Afterwards, he blows into the


solution using a straw, producing

bubbles. Worms and insects and

sometimes tiny debris then come

out floating on the clear water!



Definitely a healing plus bizarre


magical experience!

I had the chance to live in Sagada--a

fascinating place in Cordillera Region--


for some years. What I loved the most

about Cordilleran was even when

civilization reached them, they still

managed to preserve their tradition

and it always awed those who visited


this region.


The Hanging Coffins in Sagada


Mountain Province was a well known

tourist attraction there. I used to

wonder why they had to hung up the

coffins. Later on, a local explained to

me that they believed the soul of their


dead relative(s) would reach heaven

faster and easier this way.



Many questioned how they managed


to get those coffins up there.

Nonetheless, I respect that these

people took the risk because of their

love for their family members!
