70's

Before the 70's, there wasn't much musical variety. The

various genres went from Soul, R & B, Hard Rock, Soft

Rock, Disco, Reggae and Funk. In addition, towards the

end of the decade, hip-hop became part of the

music scene.

The 70's was known as the "Golden Era for vinyl records

as they were cost effective and most people owned a

record player.

P A G E 6 | T O L U N A

80's

The 80's were full of pop, rock, country and hip hop.

Dance became the genre to rise up as disco music began

to decline in popularity.

Popular artists of the decade were Madonna, Michael

Jackson, Run DMC, Talking Heads, Elvis Costello, Barbra

Streisand, Salt-n-Pepa, Aerosmith, Whitney Houston,

Foreigner, Bon Jovi, Duran Duran, Def Leppard, Prince

and many more musicians but the list would be endless.

P A G E 7 | T O L U N A

90's

In the 90's, pop, rock and hip- hop continued to be

popular and we welcomed the start of grunge music,

which is a sub genre under alternative rock.

The rise of grunge music started in Seattle, Washington

where bands like Nirvana, Pearl Jam and Soundgarden

emerged from. From Nirvana's "Smells like Teen Spirit to

Pearl Jam's "Black," and Soundgarden's" Black Hole Sun,"

there were a variety of alternative rock songs to choose

from and relate to.

P A G E 8 | T O L U N A

2000's

By the 2000’s, artists weren’t being discovered how they were in the

past - musicians were rising up from television. They either started
acting on Disney Channel or Nickelodeon or were on a music reality TV

show and one of the two helped them rise into the light.

A tremendous number of solo artists and bands started on Disney

Channel such as Justin Timberlake, the Jonas Brothers, Selena Gomez,

Miley Cyrus, Demi Lovato, Christina Aguilara, Britney Spears, and Jesse

McCartney.

Reality music TV Shows like American Idol, America has Talent, the X

Factor and more gave hidden nobody musicians the opportunity to

audition, rise-up and have the potential to win a record deal. Some

musicians include Kelly Clarkson, Carrie Underwood, Jordin Sparks,

Phillip Philips and Leona Lewis.

P A G E 9 | T O L U N A

2010's

By 2010, a lot more genres were introduced. From EDM

(Electronic Dance Music) to contemporary R&B,

Experimental music, folk to indie to everything in

between to the rise of instrumental music and accapella.

Today, there's 10 major genres - pop, indie rock, electro,

country, techno, rhythm & blues, dubstep, jazz, rock and

Electronic Dance music. Within each genre there are over

1,000+ minor genres/styles which allows you to find a

variety of musicians. There are one hit wonders to the

albums of the year - so much music now to choose from.

"Bohemian Rhapsody is a movie I was actually surprised to have had an interest in. Although, I can
understand the draw to Queen, as I can plainly see the talent in this band, I have never purchased any

of their albums and was never drawn to them, myself. However, I do love history and I enjoy learning
the history behind musicians. This is what lead me to give this movie a chance.

The cast was chosen very well, as the band members looked and performed remarkably like the real
members. The movie held my interest pretty well, but mostly lead me to feeling pity for Freddie
Mercury’s wife. She was extremely loyal to him, throughout the rest of his life, but seemed he only
needed her to be there for him, to give true support that he needed. I doubt she felt his support or love,
after Queen blew up, with success. The movie shows how Queen got their beginning and how they held
their success, for their unique and unconventional style and sticking together for many years. It also
details the many mistakes and regrets of Freddie Mercury, which lead to the downfall of the band and,
in the end, his own life.
I’m unsure of how much of it is factual, but overall, it was a pretty entertaining and educational movie."

Rhapsody

"What a blast from the past!! Sit back, relax and enjoy this rockin' tribute to Queen and Freddie
Mercury! You will be transported back to a time when music was quite different from today...a
time that many believe had REAL music! While the movie lags a bit from time to time, the

depiction of the life of Freddie Mercury is eye-opening and gripping. As you watch the movie you
will see the deep commitment of Freddie Mercury and the band to the music they produced. It is
quite a story of commitment and passion, even while dealing with adversity.
While I was not a huge fan of Queen or Freddie Mercury, this film may have made me one!
The music is awesome, the acting was terrific and the story line is inspiring. This film will keep

your attention and make you want to learn more about Queen and Freddie Mercury."

"Rarely am I disappointed not to have seen a movie at the theater, Bohemian Rhapsody was the
exception. This film was brilliant from the first scene to the last. Rami Ma lek''s portrayal of

Freddy Mercury was brilliant. He perfectly embodied Mercury's struggles with, acceptance,
fame, and finding love. The music was fantastic. I play piano, so when I was a little girl my father
introduced me to Queen, Stevie Wonder, and Rush just to name a few of the greats. I can still
remember watching Queen perform at Live Aid on television when I even younger than that.

This movie took me right back to my childhood. Watching Malek on that stage was amazing. It's
not your typical rock star movie, while it definitely qualifies it was also beautiful, moving, and at
times painful to watch. Even knowing how the movie ends I was vested in the journey. One of
these days I'll remember to wear waterproof mascara. This a must see for every music lover

and anyone else who wants to do the fandango!"

"I expected no more than your typical legend bio with the movie Bohemian Rhapsody. To my surprise
the movie offered so much more.

With the beyond outstanding performance of Rami Malek I was taken into the world of the music
industry in a way I have never before been taken. Showing me how money motivated the industry can

truly be. With the rise of stardom this was apparent with Queen more than ever as the movie shows in
the fight that Freddie Mercury has to undergo with the record executives to release Bohemian
Rhapsody as a single. When the single doesn't fit the time constraints among other things the executive
decision makers put up an seemingly unyielding fight against it's release until they are confronted with
Mercury's unstoppable musical genius. This film is riveting in the least and full of factoids that the most
die-hard fan of Queen's Freddie Mercury will be surprised to find out as Bohemian Rhapsody uncovers
it all."

Bohemian Rhapsody

By: dolffan
What did I just watch? It surely was not a tell tale story of Freddy Mercurys' life. Not to take

anything from Rami Malek, who portrayed a perfect Freddy, but come on. The film Bohemian
Rhapsody could not have been created by anyone calling themselves a Queens fan. This edited
script of what I will call a short story, only touches on an inch of Freddy Mercurys' life. He was a
legend in the music industry and an irreplaceable idolic figure Freddy loved to walk on stage
and he loved his fans but what he also loved was wild party's, sex, and rock n roll. This movie

only portrayed a crumb of Freddy's Mercurys' three layered cake life. Thumbs up for the genre,
of the music side and the actors performances there of. Emotional tug a war came with the
revealing of Freddy's Aids contracted disease, between the heart break of a legend taken before

his time and anger/resentment that a man that had everything was so careless. For a Freddy
Mercury or true Queen fan, you will not gain any more knowledge of Freddy's life watching
Bohemian Rhapsody for it reveals only the well known, obvious facts about the legends life. It is
a nice recap in a whole, to jolt our memories back to the "We will Rock You" Era, but Bohemian
Rhapsody could have been so much more. If your going to write and film a movie on any legend

as big as Freddy Mercury, then do just that. By trying so hard to not disgrace Freddy Mercurys'
name, a disservice was done to one of the greatest singers to ever step up to the mic. Why
leave out the things that made Freddy Mercury who he is was? Why write just about bits and

pieces of his life, that we're obviously hand picked, to fit the overall range of audiences. Tell it
like it is. Don't hold back any punches. Freddy Mercury would have wanted it no other way. Rest
in peace my dear friend. May the melody ring in your ears forever and a day.
