6 THINGS TO DO DURING

Written by Zara

ENJOY A HOLIDAY DRINK

Eggnog, apple cider and mulled wine, oh my! So many flavorful
choices to pick and decide.  Either run to a store to grab and go or

make it yourself! A classic drink for all the chocolate lovers would be

a nice cup of hot coco. Add your choice of milk and add the melted
chocolate then stir it together. If you want to add some holiday

cheer, add a candy cane or peppermint marshmallows to your drink!

DECORATE

The holiday season wouldn't be complete without decorating.

Simple decorations to fully decked out, you can't go wrong this

time of year. Even a strand of lights goes a long way. Either buy your
decorations or hand craft them yourself! There are lots of crafts you

can make such as snowflakes in the windowsills, painting your own

ornaments, and making your own wreath!

When is Christmas?

It is celebrated on Wednesday, December 25th.
About Christmas:

Christmas is a religious holiday and celebration that honors the birth
of Jesus Christ. People all around the world celebrate it differently.
Fun Facts about Christmas:

-The image of Santa Claus flying his sleigh began in 1819 and was

created by author Washington Irving who also created the Headless

Horsemen

- The 3 traditional colors of most Christmas decorations are red,

green, and gold. Red symbolizes the blood of Christ, green

symbolizes life and rebirth, and gold represents light, royalty, and

wealth.

HOW CHRISTMAS IS CELEBRATED

AROUND THE W RLD

In Greece for Christmas,we prepare different kinds of sweets. The
most famous ones are ''melomakarona'' and ''kourambiedes''.
Melomakarona are biscuits made mainly from flour, olive oil, and
lots of honey and Kourampiedes are mainly made of butter,
almonds and covered in sugar. Another tradition since the Greeks
are Orthodox Christians is that from 15th of November till the
Christmas day the Orthodoxs are not eating any animal products,
milk products or alcohol and on Wednesdays and Fridays are not
eating even oil or products including this food until the 25th of
December.

In France, for Christmas, we usually make dinner on the 24th of
December. It’s the occasion to be gathered around a good meal
that will be quite substantial! For appetizer, we start with
smoked salmon, foie gras, oysters, and snails. As a main course,
we eat the traditional Christmas turkey, which can be served
with potatoes, mushrooms, green beans, or chestnuts. Of
course, we eat some cheese after which is quite common in a
French meal! And to finish, we have the traditional Bûche de
Noël which is an iconic dessert in France.

As in many other parts of the world, the 25th of December in Brazil
means a family day, religious reflection, and often overeating and
drinking. Brazil celebrates Christmas in the middle of summer, so the
days are warm and sunny, giving the festivities a tropical climate. For
many, Christmas food is one of the highlights of the day and in Brazil
the food is influenced by many cultures including Italy, Portugal,
Spain and especially in the south of the country, Germany. The
Christmas feast takes place on the night before Christmas,
sometimes around midnight, when the main celebrations take place.
Be sure to go to Brazil to enjoy a Christmas with good temperatures
and some caipirinhas!

Christmas in Portugal is all about eating. You'll probably don't
know where to start, however, many families usually eat cooked
codfish, cabbage, and potatoes.Even though many people don't
like it, it's tradition to have king cake on the table, a dessert only
for sale during Christmas time."Bolo Rei" has a hole in the center
and is made out of dried and crystallized fruits and it looks like a
crown.

evening on December 30th.

About Hannukah:

Hannukah is a celebration that occurs for 8 nights which honors

the Macabees who won a rebellion against the Greek-Syrians.

Fun Facts about Hannukah:

-It is also known as the Festival of Lights.

- Grand Army Plaza in New York has the largest menorah in the

world with the lighting 32 feet high and weighs 4,000 pounds.

- The candles are added on the menorah right to left. However, the

candles are actually lit left to right.

When is Kwanzaa?

It is celebrated from Thursday, December 26th to Wednesday,

January 1st.
About Kwanzaa:

Kwanzaa is the celebration of African American culture, community

& family but it is not a religious holiday.

Fun Facts about Kwanzaa:

- It looks similar to a menorah, but the candle holder is called a

kinara which holds 7 candles.

- There is one black candle in the middle which symbolizes unity, 3

red candles to the left that symbolize the struggle of leaving slavery,

and 3 green candles on the right that symbolize the future.

How do different countries

In Greece on New Year's Eve, the family
gather together at night and they have dinner
that normally includes turkey or duck stuffed
with rice, raisins and chestnuts. For desert, Happy N
we have a cake called “Santa's pie,” that has a
coin inside and we slice it for everyone and
whoever finds the coin will be lucky all year
long.

In France, for New Year’s Eve we usually
organise a dinner with family and friends. But
what’s important is at 23h59, when
everybody stands up and counts down until
it’s midnight. Then we all kiss each other,
wishes ourselves “bonne année et bonne
santé” (happy year and good health), of
course by toasting with Champagne.

yNew Year
celebrate the New Year?

On New Year's Eve in Austria, it is usual to eat
"Raclette" with family or friends. Different
kinds of meat cut in small cubes, different
veggies cut in slices would go on top of the
raclette plate. In the small bowls below
Austrians put potatoes, bacon and cheese. All
of this is eaten with several different home-
made sauces, which are usually brought by
the guests.

Blue underwear. You read it properly!
Portuguese people believe that wearing new
blue underwear as well as eating 12 raisins
will bring you luck for the upcoming year.
Nobody is quite sure where this superstition
comes from, perhaps the underwear should
be as new as the upcoming year. However, if
you happen to celebrate New Year’s Eve in
Portugal, make sure to buy your blue
undergarments as soon as possible! Stores
may run out of it!

Dec. Movie Club

In honor of the holidays this month, we selected various

movies, you voted and this movie,

Home Alone, is the December Movie Pick.

Home alone

By: nicholesilvea

"Home Alone would have to be one of my favourite
Christmas movies of all time. I love how much action
is in the movie and how the little boy would always

defeat the bad guys. I was shocked at the first to see
how no one in the family and it was a big family
forgot him. I figured where he got in trouble the

night before the parents and siblings would sure
have something to say to him in the morning. my
favourite part of the movie was, well i have a few i

liked where the mom remembered him on the plan
LOL where him and the old man that he was afraid
of started being friends, and my all time favourite

part was when he kept taking down the bad guys."
By: brittanyboo.BG

"Home alone the movie was one of my favorite
childhood Christmas movies that I always looked

forward to watching every year. The movie itself is
funny, suspenseful, and a all round good movie to

watch with the family. It's a great movie because it
shows that you may disagree with family around the

holidays but no matter what happens family is what
makes the holidays the best part of the holiday. It
also shows a situation that normally wouldn't

happen but no matter what the issue is. You can do
anything you put your mind too and achieve

anything such as saving your home from burglars. I
also loved how it showed that no matter what a

person looks like, you shouldn't judge a person
before you get to know them. Because who knows

they might actually be an amazing individual."

Home alone

By: JESSCANADIAN

"I was 8 when Home Alone came out in 1990. I feel in love with Macaulay Culkin. There are
lots reasons why Home Alone was such a huge success. The first is that it's about a kid who
out smarted grown-ups, something that happens every day. Gets kids interested.

I remember worry that he was home alone, he was making look so fun. You couldn't help
but like the scenes he was playing. Where he takes Buzz's money. He has that smart ass

remark to cashier who asks if his all alone. Then he pulls out his coupons. They did such a
fabulous job on this film. The director Chris Joseph, who went on to make sequel in New
York. If you weren't aware, directed another classic Mrs. Doubtfire. That's another

discussion. He actually allowed Macaulay do some of behind the scenes work. I read that it
was long hours, and he wasn't under proper management(which was his dad), his words
not mine. He did a few small rules before 'Home Alone'', played Farrah Fawcett son in 'See

you in Morning' and along side John Candy as his nephew in 'Uncle Buck'. Screenwriter John
Hughes was so impressed, he had screen play written of 'Home Alone' just for Macaulay.
That he was shooting This movie yells it out loud and clear. The cast besides Macaulay also

had some big names Joe Pesci and Daniel Stern, Catherine O'Hare, John Heard and John
Candy. Who improved all his lines in movie. Even scenes a long side Catherine O'Hare.Home
Alone' has succeeded in establishing itself as a Christmas tradition, spawning off three

sequels (including a made-for-television flop), and a whole franchise in and of it. There isn't
a Christmas that goes by that the don't play it at least 10x. I try to once year watch it."

home alone

By: echo44

"Home alone was a crazy movie from back in the 90s featuring a fun kid who liked to
hide like most kids do. Sleeping in the attic might be spooky to some but very exciting to

others, in this case it was just a plain bad idea since the family left in a rush the next day.
As like most movies, this never could have happened in real life since there is no way the
neighbor kid could have made it past security with the sons passport. They did have a lot

of kids, but still, that pretty crazy not to figure out that it's not your child until you're in
the airplane flying away!! I do have to give the kid kudos though for being creative
enough to set up all those traps to keep out the burglars. VERY cool and inspiring to

watch how creative and open minded that child is. Luckily it worked out for the best in
the end, but 99% of all movies do, especially kids movies over the holidays!"

By: justgiver_13

"Oh my goodness this movie never gets old. I remember watching this all the time around

Christmas and couldn’t believe how such a little boy could make such good tricks. This movie
keep you laughing and it’s very heart warming about the goodness of family. It’s wonderful
to be able to share the joy of this movie with my children and to hear the laughter. This has

become one of our family’s favourites that we enjoy watching all December long. It’s super
cute to hear the kids quote the movie as well. But never the less this is a must to have on
your Christmas holiday watch list it doesn’t matter if you have watched it 10000 times you’ll
watch it 10000 more. Hope everyone has a wonderful Christmas/holiday."
