NEW YEAR'S
RESOLUTIONS
EDITOR'S NOTE January | 2020
Dear Influencers,
It's a new year, and we're looking forward to a lot of great things on
Toluna! 2020 so far has already been quite eventful - and not
necessarily in the best way. Nonetheless, it's only January and we
have the whole year ahead of us!
To support Australia's bushfire relief and recovery effort, we have
launched an appeal to our communities around the world. Together,
we're sure we can raise some much needed funds to help those who
have been affected by this disaster. To learn about this appeal, simply
turn the page.
In this issue of the magazine, you can also check out that latest
goings-on in the Toluna community, as well as some tips for keeping
your New Year's resolutions. Don't give up on them just yet!

"Alone, we can do so little;
together, we can do so much"
- Helen Keller
We have felt helpless as the catastrophic bushfires in Australia
continue to destroy homes and wildlife across the country at an
unprecedented level. We want to send our love and support in any
way possible - and we're certain that our Influencers from around the
world feel the same.
You can join forces with the global Toluna community by donating
1,000 or more points to Australian Red Cross. Toluna will gladly
match every donation and send the proceeds to the Red Cross on a
weekly basis. Our goal is to reach $100K AUD together.
The total points donated in each country will first be converted to the
local currency equivalent, then exchanged to Australian Dollars. As an
example, if you - our Influencer community - collectively donates
$1,000, Toluna will contribute an additional $1,000 and send a total of
$2,000 to Australian Red Cross. We'll also post updates after each
donation has been sent, so you can be informed on the progress.
To donate, visit our Rewards Centre
and look for the "I'm raising funds for
Australian Red Cross" logo. You can
donate as many times as you like,
and if you're willing, we encourage
you to spread the word on Toluna by
posting about your donation. Be sure
to include #TolunaLovesAustralia in
the title of your posts, so that we can
find them easily. Thank you for your
support.

HIGHLIGHTS
PLAY OUR LATEST GAMES!
We have launched some new games for you to try your luck
and challenge yourself through to 31 January. Check them out
on our Games page.
We've also made the game play process easier for you! You'll
no longer be required to enter your email address when playing.
This is because the games are now integrated with your
account on Toluna, and you must be logged into your account
in order to play. What's more, points for instant-win games such
as the Daily Wheel are now credited automatically. In some
cases, it may take up to 24 hours to receive the points, but at
least you no longer need to wait two weeks for us to credit
them manually! For skill based games however, we do need to
wait until the game ends before we can process the crediting -
so thanks for your patience.

TEST YOUR MEMORY
One of our most popular games is back this month! To play this
game, flip over the cards two at a time and try to find the
matching pairs before time runs out.
There are three levels, and the top players on each level at the
end of the game will each win:
Level 1: 100 points for the top 100
Level 2: 300 points for the top 60
Level 3: 500 points for the top 30
Points will be credited after the game ends on 31 January - so if
you don't do very well one day, you can try again every day until
the end of this month!

NEW YEAR'S
RESOLUTIONS: HOW TO
SUCCEED WITH THEM
It's that time of year when we put our resolve and willpower to
the test. Only one in five people who make new year's
resolutions keep them for the whole year, and most people will
abandon them by February. So, before it's too late, here are
some tips courtesy of Jelena Kecmanovic, a psychologist at
Georgetown University.

If you want to lose weight, for example, it's better to think
about health benefits rather than social pressures. People who
are driven by genuine values are better at achieving goals.

You can also ask for help from
the people around you - for
example, asking coworkers not
to bring sweets to the office. Or
if you want to detox from
technology, delete the apps that
you think are causing the most
trouble.

Bad habits are hard to break,
so plan ahead. For example,
have fruit or healthy snacks
available in case you have that
midnight craving. You could
also do something productive
to take your mind off that
craving.

If you've set yourself a big goal, break it down into smaller,
easy to manage parts - otherwise you could find it too
daunting and end up procrastinating or giving up completely.

New year's resolutions are
usually about self improvement,
so it helps to reinforce your good
intentions by visualising the
positive outcomes that you want
to achieve.

Most people think that the way to increase willpower is to
force yourself because being indulgent shows a lack of
discipline. However, the exact opposite is true - people who
blame themselves for even small failures of their willpower
tend not to keep good intentions in the long run.

OPINIONS FROM
WAS 2019 A GOOD YEAR FOR
YOU? AS LAST YEAR
WRAPPED UP, IT WAS ONLY
NATURAL TO REFLECT ON
THE YEAR'S EVENTS AND
MILESTONES. WE WERE
CURIOUS WHETHER YOU
THOUGHT IT WAS A GOOD
YEAR.
43% of the 374 Kiwi members polled
thought the positives outweighed the
negatives, while 20% thought the
opposite. Regardless of how 2019 was
for you, we hope that 2020 will be one of
those years that you reminisce about
fondly!
RESEARCHERS IN THE U.K.
REPORTED THAT GOING TO
MUSEUMS, THE THEATRE OR
ENGAGING IN THE ARTS
COULD INCREASE YOUR LIFE
EXPECTANCY. DOES THIS
MAKE YOU MORE LIKELY TO
ENGAGE IN THESE TYPES OF
ACTIVITIES?
42% of the 407 Kiwi members polled
already attend cultural events or visit
museums at least twice a year, and
believe these activities are beneficial.
Another 45% would like to take part in
these activities more often, while 12%
don't enjoy museums or the theatre and
are unconvinced by these findings.

THE COMMUNITY
ELECTRIC VEHICLES HAVE
BECOME QUITE POPULAR IN
RECENT YEARS, AND
COMPANIES ARE NOW
LOOKING TO DEVELOP
ELECTRIC PLANES AS A FORM
OF CLEANER, CHEAPER AND
QUIETER AIR TRAVEL. WE
WERE INTERESTED TO KNOW
HOW THE TOLUNA
COMMUNITY FEELS ABOUT
COMMERCIAL ELECTRIC
PLANES.
Out of 325 New Zealand members, 81%
support this idea if it is tested properly
over long distances. 11% think it's a good
idea, but don't believe that electric
planes will be a viable industry. Only 3%
think this type of innovation is
unnecessary and that fuel-powered
aircraft is the only option for air travel.
THE AUSTRALIAN BUSHFIRES
HAS GENERATED A LOT OF
ATTENTION FROM AROUND
THE WORLD. ONE MODEL
MADE HEADLINES FOR
SENDING NUDE PHOTOS TO
ANYONE WHO DONATED TO
THE RELIEF CHARITIES. WHAT
DID THE TOLUNA COMMUNITY
THINK ABOUT THIS?
Of the 467 Kiwi members polled, 55%
thought she did a good job of raising
funds and awareness. 23% did not think
this was the best way to fund-raise, and
12% thought this was a demeaning
publicity stunt.
