The Lagos 'Miniature Art Fair' – A Renewed Burning Desire
It could not be said that the idea of a miniature art exposition in cosmopolitan Lagos in the last 35 years is
completely new. Miniature exhibitions have come in different shades and forms. Sometimes the
organisers give the impression of an enduring annual feasts only to stop abruptly.
Worried at this trend, the duo of Iwalewa and Ogirikan galleries are determined to reverse the ugly trend.
According to Professor Ogene the duo are partnering towards promoting activities of new and
established indigenous artists in a strategy to rejuvenate interest in Nigerian art. Some of the problems
they are solving by organizing this miniature exposition is to stop the lacuna created by the insistent stop
gaps in having annual miniature exposé. They are also determined to introduce freshness into Lagos art
market that will not only entertain but boost the financial standings of the artists.
To match action with words, they have enlarged the scope of the 2019 show to include notable artists for
seven (7) days as opposed to the one-day affair in 2018. This makes it bigger, better, flexible and an
indication of growth.
Other visible development noticed is the sponsorships the organisers marshalled and are yielding
positive results. They also made sure works for the show are juried for good presentation. These
improvements will guarantee the needed quality.
I therefore charge visitors to the show to pick up a memorable art-piece for both homes and loved ones.
Do have a happy viewing.

FOREWORD
"A work of art is the realization of the creative inner- formation of a vast Information store executed in tangible
form, for the enjoyment by the artist and the art community"
Sam Ovraiti
The collaborative venture of Adeolu Tahouf and Femi Williams in putting up this miniature art fair is a welcome
development. Two gallery owners, one vision to bring their unique resources together with a common goal to
provide the Nigerian art scene with quality miniature artworks covering a significant array of works of art. This second
edition presents to the art community as real food for the soul as a lot was put in the selecting in order to showcase
the most memorable art pieces.
Artists the world over produce miniature art in the course of their career. The size of an artwork could be a function
of several factors decided by the artists or even the art patrons .The fascination of having a treasure as an artist idea all
in a miniature form also allow the liberty of maximizing the growing limited wall space. This increases the
enjoyment of more original art ideas by art community
Whereas many people look at size of an artwork to determine price, the value of an artwork, does not necessarily
diminish by its small size. Good art is judged by the content. Miniature inclusive. No wonder our own Yusuf Grillo"s
charcoal miniature drawing 2017 October Rain fetched a remarkable 3M.This goes to show that size is not all that
matter.
As you encounter the works in this Art Fair be confident that All the artworks received same attention as the big
works by same artists.

enthusiasm and recommendations from galleries and
notable collectors at home and abroad. Abayomi is
fascinated by the ethereal beauty of the colour spectrum
and particularly its effects on the psychology of people.
Consequently, his art expresses the richness of colours
juxtaposed with his cultural sensibilities. Abayomi says, "I am
concerned with the social interaction between colours and
cultures as it relates to individual character. This fascination
with the colour spectrum comes out clearly in my art. I build
up a work of art using the tactile quality of short strokes of
colours. I explore the use of design elements as stylistic tools
to create illusions of images."

ABIOLA OLADOTUN
Abiola Oladotun was born in 1988. He is from Oyo State, Nigeria. As a
young boy, he enjoyed drawing although it was more like scribbling at
the time. He hid this from his parents especially when he had to do
house chores. His mother later noticed his devotion to art when she
paid more attention to his commitment to it. She then encouraged
him to pursue his dream. When Abiola's parents moved to Lagos, it
was the art he saw around him that further inspired him to develop
himself. He had his art training at the University of Lagos, Nigeria where
he graduated in 2012 with a Bachelor's degree in Fine Arts. Abiola's
creative repertoire as a full-time studio artist spans various aspects of
visual art. His style is highly expressionistic. He has also participated in
major art shows like Art x Lagos, ArtHouse Auction, Maiden edition
Miniature Art Fair Lagos, Signature and Sogal Auction. Abiola says that
"In a world surrounded by beauty and chaos my dream is to be part of
the former, lost in time and space, where I can create and express my
world of beauty without boundaries."

in Visual Art with a specialization in Painting in 2011. Adulphina
developed an interest in art while she was a student at the Command
Children School, Ikeja Lagos, and has continued her creative journey
since then. She creates conceptual paintings as a form of visual
explorations of beauty, emotions and the embodiment of the
delicateness of feminity, inspired by an array of near-traumatic
childhood experiences and memories. According to Imuede, "My
approach to visual expression is explorative, through series of visually
appealing caricatures that seek to glorify women and delineate the
human head as the centre of human consciousness which holds
perceptions, ideas, identity, dreams and aspirations." Imuede's portraits
are usually rendered in a naturalistic yet exaggerated form, which aims
to emphasize thematic context. She works with acrylic, watercolour,
ink and oil paints. She has participated in many group exhibitions
including a show at Alexis Galleries, Victoria Island, Lagos 2018; Eko

a deep satisfaction in capturing feelings and presenting
it visually. My art (painting/ photography) aims to
translate and express the mundane in an abstracted
form that elicits a plethora of interpretations from
different viewers. As a photographer I believe life does
not have to be photographed according to reality;
instead, I add texture or brush strokes to give them a

what matters most".

ASEMOKHA IMOMOH
IMOMOH ASEMOKHA's works are predominantly of the
painting and print genre. The exciting thing about his style and
technique is his usage of colours to communicate stratums of
metaphorical allusions. His broad spectrum oeuvre spans varied
thematic range which seems to be borne from a certain depth
of creative restiveness. Asemokha's creative path is rooted
purely in his expressive power and guarded by intuition, a route
he seems to have constantly re-invented through his ability for
introspection. This perspective to work is evocative of a quest
having twists and turns but with the hope of always leading his
audience to a revelation. The artist has a penchant for including
a self-styled graffiti in his body of work. Imomoh believes that, “…
art is the very essence of being spiritual, it is the way we sing,
dance, sway and breathe. It is inseparable from life itself.”

Auchi Polytechnic, specialization in Painting. Known for 41 x 41 cm (16 x 16 in)
making paintings with naïve but highly expressive 2017

political satires on the political anomalies and social
phenomenon in Nigeria. Most of his works have been
widely criticized and derided for their childish simplicity
and chastised for being too graphic. Some of these
images causing disgust comprise dismembered limbs
alluding to victims of suicide bombings, skulls and
skeletons referencing deaths from religious and ethnic
violence in Nigeria. At other times he portrays corrupt
politicians, policemen, and people in vulgar and
desperate situations. Uwagboe, who has always

GODSWILL CHIMA
GODSWILL CHIMA is a self-taught artist, born in Lagos, but is an indigene
of Owerri in Imo State. He is interested in abstract painting which he
believes deeply engages the mind as it seeks to decipher it. Abstract art
heightens the viewer's sense of perception and carries nuances best
expressed in subtlety. He greatly admires, and is inspired by the works of
Jimmy Law and Uche Joel Chima. He draws inspiration from everyday
dialogues bordering on religion, love, politics and conversations touching
on clichés and stereotypes. Asides championing his opinions, he applies
art to addressing those issues worthy of commendation. Annually, he
seizes the 1st of October (Nigeria's Independence Day) to celebrate
political leaders, as well as organizations and media outlets such as
Daviva, MTN, Dettol, DHL, Nigerian Customs, Channels and Pulse Nigeria.

HASSAN ABDULAZEEZ
HASSAN ABDULAZEEZ is a Lagos based visual artist. He started art at a
very tender age. Debris and junks constitute the major materials which
he uses to produce sculptural works, and he has been able to do this by
using especially discarded metals to make sense out of the many
wastes around the environment and create beauty out of it.
Abdulazeez is greatly fascinated by sculptural forms. This is one of the
reasons why he took up sculpture as his means of artistic expression
immediately after his education at the Polytechnic Ibadan, where he
attained the National Diploma in General Art in 2017.

IYUNOLA SANYAOLU
IYUNOLA SANYAOLU'S art explores the happenings in society
through the path of what messages he desires to pass through in
his work. His work is expressive as he has so much more to come
from his being which he explores through the oil medium, spray
paint, texture, colors, movements etc. Sanyaolu is influenced by
his culture, environment and thoughts. According to him, "As I
symbolically gather the pieces of the puzzle, my main interest is
usually the outcome and my weird connections. I mostly
approach a blank canvas with an open mind, making me a part of
the journey of the creative process and often as intrigued as the
audience. This for me is an exciting aspect of my creativity just as
much as the beauty of the work of art when it is born."
