Association of Science, Technology and Innovation (ASTI)
The Young Inventors Challenge was created to help young people
express themselves in a creative and positive way. A way that focusses
proactively at solutions. Solutions to make this world a better place. I
would like to congratulate you, the young inventors to have completed
this process despite all the odds.
It is always easy to start something, but difficult to finish that which we
have started. The true mark of a successful person is one who is able to
finish that which he/she starts. This is especially true with a programme like
YIC. YIC is not a 100meter dash but a long and meaningful marathon.
Marathons become most difficult in the middle of the race. This is when
we hit a mental block and our entire body begins to shut down. What
keeps the marathon runner going is his/her pure determination to
complete the race. The true primary aim of most marathoners is to cross
that finish line.
In a marathon, there will be people cheering you at the start, and there
will be people cheering for you at the finish line. However, in between
the start and the end, there will be few people who would be interested.
This is the crucial part of your run – when you have to cheer for yourself.
We started YIC with a cheer and now we are at the end with another
cheer. We were not there with you in the middle. Only you and those
close to you were there. We do not know the challenges you have
faced nor will we be able to fully empathise. We may never know the
amazing things you would have done to reach the finish line today –
but you, and only you know. And in the journey of life – that is all that
matters.
I would consider that all are winners here because you have crossed the
finish line. I know this may sound a little corny or clichéd but that is all
that matter despite this being a competition. Winning is a short term
jubilation which of course is well deserved - but remember the journey.
That is the place where true learning occurs. That is where you become
a better person. That is where you make a difference – both to yourself
and those around you. Tell one, tell all of your journey, share what you
have learnt – share your invention, share you vision. Let this be the first
step in the bigger marathon called life. You are still near the beginning
of your ‘race’. There are people cheering you on – but soon you would
reach the middle. A place where you would be alone. Do not forget to
be your own cheerleader, your own motivator.
Finally I like to thank all our supporters, our amazing judges and
volunteers who gave us their time, our funders who gave us the trust,
the teachers and mentors who gave us their labour, and YOU, the
future inventors and change makers, who gave us your best. We also
like to thank JACTIM Foundation, CIMB Foundation, Yayasan UEM,
Tenaga Nasional Berhad and Manulife Holdings Berhad for their
generous contribution.
A special thank you to the Ministry of Science Technology and
Innovation (MOSTI), Malaysia and the National Aeronautics and Space
Administration, United States of America (NASA) for their amazing and
motivational speech. We also thank the US Embassy (KL) for their
facilitation. We are grateful to all for making this a meaningful journey
for us, as we hope it has also been for you.
We wish you all the best today and beyond. “Keep your feet on the
ground and keep reaching for the stars” Casey Kasey

Young Inventors Challenge 2021 Special Edition
Dear Parents and Children,
Sustainable Development Goals (SDG)
As the world is slowly emerging out of the Covid 19 pandemic, many
countries across the globe is converging at Glasgow for COP 26 to
tackle new challenges in climate change, environmental problems and
sustainability issues never seen before.
Sustainable Development Goals is the theme of this year’s Young
Inventors Challenge (YIC). Young Inventors Challenge is a small step in
getting young minds to think towards solving issues and problems
facing us globally. The Young Inventors Challenge Special Edition 2021
aims to foster high school children to cooperate as a team to find
innovative solutions to current day problems. I hope this objective will be
shared by all children across nations to raise our awareness that we put
our minds together and come up with innovations solutions.
This is the 9th year in the row that Young Inventors Challenge
competition is open once again to secondary school students aged 13
to 17 and we encourage the teams to be in groups of 4-5 students of
different cultural background to come together in an inventive process.
The purpose of the programme is to encourage creativity and inventive
capability of young people. This year’s theme is both global and open
ended; with the hope that it can open the young adult’s minds to think
broadly and inclusively.
This year we have received almost to 352 applications from South Asia
as well from almost all the ASEAN countries. After the initial registration
process, a total of 283 teams have submitted their invention proposals.
Based on their videos and report submissions, top 20 teams have been
shortlisted for viva sessions. The winners will be announced online on
the final day.
This event would not be possible without the financial assistance and
grants from our funders, many of whom are continuously supporting us
year after year. Our funders among others are: JACTIM Foundation,
CIMB Foundation, Yayasan UEM, Tenaga Nasional Berhad and Manulife
Holdings Berhad. This year’s Young Inventors Challenge Special Edition
2021 winners will be announced on 20th of November 2021.
I hope projects such as YIC will continue to boost budding inventors to
find solutions and contribute their ideas to the world in the right
direction. I am grateful to all our partners who have come together and
share the same dream to build a nation of innovative inventors.
Thank you.
Honorary Speech
YBhg. Datuk Zainal Abidin Bin Abu Hassan
Secretary General Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation
Assalamualaikum warrahmatullahi wabarakatuh.
Ladies and gentlemen.
Thank you for inviting me to the Young Inventors Challenge 2021 Special
Edition Virtual Prize Giving Ceremony. It is my pleasure to be part of this
significant event.
First of all, I would like to congratulate, The Association of Science,
Technology and Innovation (ASTI) for successfully organizing the Young
Inventors Challenge 2021 Special Edition. ASTI’s range of programs and
events are optimum synergies to the science and technology
fundamentals and I must sincerely commend them on their continued
efforts in raising the quality of Science, Technology, Engineering and
Mathematics (STEM) education in the nation.
Contestants of the Young Inventors Challenge (YIC) are a team of 4 to 5
secondary school students. They put their heads together to yield
inventions that demonstrate the creative and inventive capabilities of
young people. YIC is designed to encourage students’ interest in
exploring STEM by giving them exposure to varieties of interactive and
immersive learning experiences through exhibitions, workshops, forums,
competitions and presentations. Besides that, it is also crafted to increase
the spirit of entrepreneurship among students, therefore boosting the
development of local technology-based entrepreneurs.
The diverse tangents of YIC allow the students to orient themselves into
the intricacies of science and technology as well as the practice of
real-life working needs such as proper presentation skills, marketing and
even advertising dexterity. The theme anchors the students to
understand the global issues and aspires them to find common
solutions for the problems. All these make for a well-rounded graduate
of the future and bode well for the ASTI programs growing reputation.
Ladies and Gentlemen,
I note that ASTI started this program in 2013 as a pilot and the response
has been remarkable ever since. For instance, this year’s Young
Inventors Challenge 2021 Special Edition has attracted the participation
of 131 teams from 7 countries namely Malaysia, Brunei, Indonesia,
Philippines, Thailand, Singapore, and Timor Leste. I am heartened by the
quality and creativity of videos submitted by the participants on
inventions to solve SDG issues. I am very proud of all your tenacious
efforts. It doesn’t matter if you win or lose, it is the meaningful
experience gained throughout the journey that counts. I hope all of you
seize the opportunity and continue to embrace science, technology,
engineering and Mathematics and keep doing innovation for the good
of the human race and universe.
Before I end my speech, I would like to convey my appreciation to the
organiser, The Association of Science, Technology and Innovation (ASTI),
teachers, parents, students and everyone involved in making the Young
Inventors Challenge 2021 Special Edition a successful event.
Congratulations to all the winners and I wish everyone the very best.
Keep in mind this quote from Abraham Lincoln, “the best way to predict
your future is to create it”. So, be innovative.
And with that, I thank you.
Special Address
Mr. Garvey Mclntosh
NASA Asia Representative
Hello Everyone,
My Name is Garvey Mclntosh and I’m the NASA Asia Representative
based at the US Embassy in Tokyo. I been in NASA for 18 years now and
I’m very very excited about the collaboration that NASA and Malaysia
are looking to move forward with in the areas of Earth and Space
Science and in the future may be STEM as well. I want to wish everyone
at Young Inventors Challenge the best of luck for your event and look
forward to seeing you in person really soon.
The spacecraft Voyager 1 was more than 6.4 billion kilometres away, at
the periphery of the solar system, when it captured a portrait of Earth.
The Earth was a tiny dot only 0.12 pixel in size. Seeing this amazing
picture, Carl Sagan wrote an excellent piece the "pale blue dot" which
begin with:
"Look again at that dot. That's here. That's home. That's us. On it
everyone you love, everyone you know, everyone you ever heard of,
every human being who ever was, lived out their lives. The aggregate of
our joy and suffering, thousands of confident religions, ideologies, and
economic doctrines, every hunter and forager, every hero and coward,
every creator and destroyer of civilization, every king and peasant, every
young couple in love, every mother and father, hopeful child, inventor
and explorer, every teacher of morals, every corrupt politician, every
"superstar," every "supreme leader," every saint and sinner in the history
of our species lived there--on a mote of dust suspended in a sunbeam..."
As we slowly recover from one of the worst pandemics in modern
times, we may wonder its importance in relation to the Universe
unimaginably vast, both calm and chaotic at times.
We at NASA would like to congratulate you, for providing us with
solutions via your invention for a better world. It is you who will inherit
the earth, both the good and the bad we older folks leave behind.
Although we may one day be adventurers in the Universe, this is and
always will be our home, the only living planet known to us now.
Keep your dreams alive and continue your journey of discovery and
inventing, in your hands - our future resides. Make your life great. Make
it matter. Make it meaningful. Please also consider a career in agencies
such as NASA that works at the boundaries of knowledge. Boundaries
which one day you may break. Work hard and keep your goals clear
and you will get to that which you aim.
Finally, to the organisers for YIC, we wish you the best of luck and we
hope you continue your good work, as an avenue for our young to
showcase their amazing creations.
Thank you very much and have a great event.
The Association of Science, Technology, and Innovation (ASTI) is a
non-governmental and non-profit oriented organization (NGO) working
towards empowering young children's’ interest in science through the
act of doing where learning is achieved from discovering scientific
principles themselves. In order to achieve this vision ASTI has
experimented with various projects and has successfully gained traction
on programs such as the Science Fair for Young Children (SFYC), Young
Inventors Challenge (YIC), Creative, and Critical Thinking Camp (CCTC),
and others. Each of these programs are interlinked in order to provide a
platform for participation of young students that is holistic and inclusive
in nature.
YIC is part of this vision, where it requires teams of up to 4-5 members to
put their minds together and come up with an invention. The purpose
of the program is to build and encourage the creative and inventive
capability of young people. ASTI started this program in 2013 as a pilot
where 12 teams participated from 12 schools, and the response has
been remarkable ever since – the project has been growing at almost
100 percent year on year with over 100 teams participating and about
3000 students participating in the program.
ASTI is proud to mention that Young Inventors Challenge has received
international recognition from the Ministry of Education Malaysia for the
year 2017 to 2020. In 2019, YIC was also shortlisted from over 1500
education projects from around the world to participate in the
conference and competition called “Reimagining Education” held in
London and organised by the respected rating agency, QS
international.
This year, the organisers of the YIC, ASTI (Association of Science
Technology and Innovation), was deeply concerned with the continuous
outbreak of COVID-19 but for us education and learning is something
that cannot be postponed nor can it be stopped, especially so for young
people. Our concerns have us supporting the travel limitations imposed
across the world. In view of this and in protecting the safety and
well-being of all our national and international participants, we
announced YIC 2021 SPECIAL EDITION same as year 2020. YIC Special
edition was conducted through a submission of video-based inventions
and a report by participating teams via online.
We received a total of 352 applications of which 283 teams submitted
proposals with a wide range of ideas related to the theme from Malaysia,
Indonesia, Thailand, Singapore, Brunei, Philippines, and Timor Leste. We
had shortlisted 150 teams to participate in the final competition via
Invention Pitch Video and Project Report submission. As of 10 September
2021, 131 teams had successfully submitted their Invention Pitch Video
and Project Report from 7 countries which has been marked by panel of
63 judges.
On the 13th October 2021, we informed the TOP 20 team who has been
qualified for the Online Viva Session. The VIVA session was conducted on
the 30th October 2021 to determine the One (1) Platinum, Two (2) Gold,
Seven (7) Silver and Ten (10) Bronze award winners. On the 20th
November 2021, we announced the winners via virtual prize giving
ceremony.
The aim and objectives of YIC are:
To help develop future inventors.
To give an opportunity to young and future
inventors to develop and showcase their inventions.
To help young inventors to experience the inventive
cycle, from conceptualisation to product/prototype.
To introduce the idea of "using inventions as a tool
to make a positive change in society".
To give opportunities to young people who are
inventive to promote their ideas to the outside
world.
By participating in YIC, the participants would also:
Produce an original invention and receive
recognition for participating in the event.
Meet and network with other inventors who share a
similar passion.
Develop creative and innovative thinking skills.
Develop teamwork dynamics to solve problems.
Use resources such as the internet, library and
experts to hone their research skills.
Learn to document their invention project.
Enhance self-esteem and confidence.
Acquire public presentation and writing skills.

Today, we light the way.
Tomorrow, they pave their own.
To date, TNB through Yayasan Tenaga Nasional (YTN) has contributed
more than RM1.2 billion in sponsorship for students to pursue tertiary
education, both locally and abroad. In addition to that, Universiti Tenaga
Nasional (UNITEN) helps groom the next generation of trailblazers.
After all, when we bridge the gap between deserving young minds and
the education they need, we not only improve their lives but also shape
the future of their communities.
