2022 ASIAN CHAMPS LOGO, POSTER AND FOOTY RECORD DESIGNED BY
The 2022 Asian Champs Record was designed by X Digital’s Giang Tong Phong. Thanks to Prossy & Robbo for the photos. Thanks to our contributors - Matty Gale, Simon Highfield, Billy Crang, Jarrod Roberts, and Rob Spurr. Finally massive thanks the Thai Tigers Organizing Committee and our event sponsors. To all the
players best of luck in the games and to anyone we’ve missed thank you for your support!
AFL ASIA WELCOME
AFL ASIA WELCOME
On behalf of the Advisory Board of AFL Asia, I warmly welcome all competitors, officials and supporters back to Bangkok for the ATG 2022 Asian Championships. The AFL remain highly supportive of developing the code in Asia with the annual Asian Championships the centrepiece of our annual calendar.
Since the formation of the Championships in 1999/2000, this is the fifth time the tournament has been held in Bangkok (ninth in Thailand) and I extend my personal thanks to the Thailand Tigers, the organising committee and our amazing list of sponsors and partners.
The material disruption we have all experienced these past three years have flowed through to AFL participation levels in the region with many clubs at times struggling to maintain a pulse let alone play competitive football. I’d like to formally acknowledge the resilience of our member clubs and organisations, and extend my appreciation to all involved in keeping the clubs operational with so much uncertainty and player turnover.
With that in mind, the 2022 Championships are an opportunity to reset and reinvigorate our code and I urge everyone to come together in a spirit of mateship, sportsmanship and general gratitude to be playing some footy again.
I look forward to chatting with and meeting many of you over the weekend.

2022 ASIAN CHAMPIONSHIPS RECORD
The Thailand Tigers Australian Rules Football Club warmly welcome all competitors, families, friends and spectators to the Austhai Geophysical 2022 Asian Championships. With the ongoing global challenges of the past few years, it is great to have football happening once again. The Tigers extend gratitude to all of our sponsors, but in particular Gerard McNeill from Austhai Geophysical Consultants for their significant contribution to the event.
This will be the ninth time in the event’s history that the Tigers will play host to the event, with the last time back in 2019. The initial planning of this event saw a significant drop in registered interest, particularly due to border and quarantine restrictions which thankfully are being reduced by the day. Our intention was to host the event across two fields at Bangkok Patana School, and thanks to some tough scheduling from Matt Gale and AFL Asia, we have managed to keep all fixtures at the one venue.
It is a great honour for the Tigers to host this event, and we aim to maintain the high standards that have been set by past hosts. It has been fantastic to see the increase in local players at Champs, and the ever growing and successful Women’s division continuing to evolve.
During the day we will feature an Auskick match to showcase some of the best young talent in the region, with all Auskickers welcome to join. The Tigers are working hard to develop the game for juniors and regularly have over 20 local Thai children join our program and are keen to give them the opportunity to play against other opposition.
There will also be an All Asian game on the day, and in celebration, we will meet after the event for the customary boat races and to recognise the best players from across Asia
Enjoy your day and enjoy your time in Thailand.

The word redemption springs to mind when considering the Indonesian Volcanoes mindset heading into Asia’s showcase tournament. Given their mixed bag of results at the 2019 Asian Champs and after hoisting the 2018 Division 1 trophy, the Indonesian Volcanoes are determined to reach the top of the Asian football mountain once again and achieve the ultimate success on offer. The Bali Geckos and Jakarta Bintangs combination will bring the pride, passion, courage and resilience of their countrymen, and the flair and brilliance of their star- studded expats. Team introduction
The PNG Muruks delivered a Harlem Globetrotters- type campaign in their previous Division 1 demolition of the 2019 Asian Champs and will be looking to repeat those performances on Asia’s biggest stage. With more expats in their squad this time around and a strong local frontier of explosive talent, it is expected that the PNG Muruks will figure strongly when the whips are cracking at the business end of the Asian Champs. The PNG Muruks play an exciting brand of football and they’ll certainly entertain the crowd when in possession of the football. Courageous captain Tim Richter is synonymous with lifting trophies in Asia, but do the PNG Muruks have the squad depth this time around?!

Team introduction
The Singapore Wombats are one of the biggest clubs in Asia and have a trophy cabinet to match it, with Division 1 glory achieved in 1999, 2001, 2005, 2006 and 2011. The hard-nosed Wombats are a physical and skilled side, who will punish their opposition on the scoreboard if given an opportunity. Their recent form line against the Vietnam Swans and while retaining the Changi Cup off the back of a 111 point thumping against the Malaysian Warriors suggests that they are capable of mounting another challenge again this year, despite losing several players due to the pandemic. One thing’s for sure, no matter who takes on the ‘Bats it’ll be a bruising encounter and they’ll have to earn every possession against the proud club.

With their 2019 Division 2 victory, the Swans committed to returning to the Champs for a Div 1 tilt. No one thought that tilt would be three years in the making, but here they are. From the outside the Swans look to have weathered the past few years well. Domestic leagues have flourished in Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi, local player development programs are scaling up and the Swans have entered Div 1 and Div 3 Men’s teams in 2022. Recent home games vs Singapore and Cambodia have added further evidence that the Swans are primed for their Div 1 step up and a chance to take it to the big boys in BKK!

Big shout out to the Indonesian Volcanoes who are making the AFLW Asian Champs debut. Their debut campaign has been a long time in the making with the Bali Geckos Women’s and Jakarta Bintangs Women’s teams both being established back in 2019, but were in a primitive phase back then and unable to play in the 2019 AFLW Asian Champs. Although the Volcanoes recent form was an 81-0 loss against the AFLW Asian Champs favourites in the Malaysian Warrior Women, they had a large amount of players unavailable for the away tour. Expect Volcanoes captain Dawn Herring to play with plenty of passion and the overall squad to evolve as a team throughout the tournament.

The global pandemic has decimated the HK Dragons playing stocks and with a late window of opportunity due to broader restrictions being eased, it has allowed the Dragons to field a heavily weakened Division 2 side at the last minute. 2019 All-Asian & Division 1 MVP Sam Agars and 2018 All-Asian defender & HK Dragons President Jake McCauley will provide the Dragons with their necessary bookends, however the majority of their squad will be made up of Division 3 players and UK and Northern American players, who are yet to try their hand at our great game. The Malaysian Warriors have dropped back a division this year on the back of a player exodus during the pandemic, pre-pandemic Asian Champs results in 2018 and 2019, and their lack of competitveness against Division 1 teams in the back end of the year. There’s plenty of experienced leaders that’ll contribute for the Warriors when it matters, but squad depth may test them. Season 2022 is the 30th year anniversary of the Malaysian Warriors and it will be the final Asian Champs for two of their club legends and past and current President’s in Shaun ‘Digger’ Di Gregorio and Luke ‘Rylo’ Rylands. Can the Warriors celebrate in style as they did in their 25th year anniversary?!

Although the Philippine Eagles have dropped back a few gears and into Division 2, it’s certainly not by choice, as they went winless at the 2019 Asian Champs and their playing stocks have barely recovered since the pandemic. In terms of talent, the Philippine Eagles will field an aging squad with plenty of experience, most of which have seen their best footy in the back of the rear vision mirror. 40+ year old club captain and superstar Winner Santos will play his heart out as will the inspirational gladiator Evan Spargo, who will go down as one of Asia’s greatest local footballers of all time. Expect the Philippine Eagles to be ultra-competitive, but will they have the necessary petrol tickets at the pointy end of the tournament?!

Team introduction
Since Division 2 was first introduced back in 2015, the Thailand Tigers have been the most consistent side yet to take home any silverware. The Thaigers were Grand Finalists back in 2019 and will be hoping to go one better on their home deck this year. A strong domestic rivalry between the ‘Yellow and Blacks’ has kept the boys from Bangkok fit and focused during the pandemic and it will hold them in good stead during crucial phases of their campaign. Expect the usual suspects in David Shields, Jake ‘J-Mac’ McIntosh and Michael ‘Samo’ Sammons to feature prominently. The Thaigers are primed to win their breakthrough Division 2 title and will leave no stone unturned in their pursuit!

Elder statesmen and young and developing local players on the rise. That is exactly what you can expect to see when the 6 teams face off in the Aussie Divers Phuket & PADI Asia Pacific Division 3. It’ll be a wide- open affair as the Cambodian Eagles drop back into Division 3 this year, whilst the host-club Thailand Tigers and Vietnam Swans field teams in this format for the first time. The Singapore Wombats are experienced campaigners and the Laos Elephants will play with plenty of heart and you can expect more of the same from the Pakistan Markhors, who are making their Asian Champs debut. Expect the unexpected!

Team introduction
The Cambodian Eagles will venture into Division 3 company for the first time this year on the back of fielding a team that will predominently feature local Khmer footballers with a sprinkle of aging experienced expats. Quite a number of the Cambodian Eagles highend talent have either returned back to Australia or are unavailable to tour and in turn it will weaken their spine, particularly up forward and their ability to rebound out of defence. The local Khmer mosquito fleet will test their opponents with their speed and agility and expect that to be one of their biggest assets as a team. If steady heads can prevail when the chips are down or when games are on the line, you can expect the Cambodian Eagles to be a big threat this year.

The Laos Elephants have the best guernsey in Asian football and always play their hearts out despite being one of the minnow teams in Asia. Over the past two months, the Elephants squad has evolved enormously, as playing at the Asian Champs seemed highly unlikely as they’ve been in a dormant phase since the 2019 Asian Champs and due to the pandemic up until such time. The Laos Elephants squad will predominently feature local players with a mix of aging players and a few Australian miners who have recently arrived in Laos. If they play with as much passion as local 2019 All-Asian and Division 3 MVP Vilayluck Onphanmany, then the Elephants are capable of taking down some big scalps!

Team introduction
Big warm welcome to the Pakistan Markhors, who will be making their Asian Champs debut this year! The AFL Pakistan representative side have played in two AFL International Cups (2014 and 2017) and will bring a breath of fresh air in terms of cultural confidence to the Asian Champs with their passion and camaraderie. If there preparations are anything to go by expect the Pakistan Markhors to be a fit and physical side, who will embrace the heat of the battle. Keep an eye on elder statesman and inspirational leader Inam Ul Haq, who is a tough battering ram with a crunching tackle. Expect the Pakistan Markhors to become crowd favourites overnight and thus they shouldn’t be taken lightly!

Team introduction
If the Singapore Wombats can emulate their 2019 Asian Champs Division 3 form, you’d have to think that they would be one of the early favourites to take out this year’s Division 3 after finishing equal top on points last time around and winning their 3rd vs 4th playoff game. Throw a global pandemic into the mix and a potential lack of squad depth and suddenly they enter this year’s Division 3 as an unknown quantity. Having said that, expect the Wombats personnel to be the club’s elder statesmen in their twilgiht years. They’ll no doubt be a skilful side, who will rely on their ability to read the play and hope that far outweighs their fitness bases come the finals. Serious threat in Division 3!

Kudos must given to the Thailand Tigers as they field two men’s squads (Division 2 and 3) for the first time in the club’s history at an Asian Champs! The host country will put their best foot forward in Division 3 with a side that will rely on its football smarts, it’s ability to extract the best out of it’s local Thai players and the team’s pride to perform in it’s own backyard. The make-up of the Thaigers will see players sourced from Bangkok and potentially from Chiang Mai and Phuket, which will be terrific to see. The Thailand Tigers will go into this year’s Division 3 as a wildcard capable of doing some serious damage along the way!

The Vietnam Swans have managed to bring two squads to the Champs, an impressive feat in itself. The Div 3 squad boasts plenty of ‘experience’! Don’t worry about the 2022 Geelong Cats, the Div 3 Swannies won’t need to rent walking frames for their Mad Monday! In saying that the Swans are hoping some club legends like Micky Francis, Eric Kerrison, Timmy Pickert, Andy Glendinning, James Phillips and Kev Wilkinson have aged like fine wines in the Covid break. Watch out for some of the younger guys who have been starring in the domestic league games and could easily have claimed spots in the Div 1 squad.

BIG ROOSTER TO PRESENT NEWLY DESIGNED ALL-ASIAN GUERNSEYS
The ‘Big Rooster’ (Julian Clark) will present this year’s All-Asian guernseys in a mark of respect for the great man, who originally created the tradition of presenting All-Asian guernseys to Asia’s best footballers that dominated the Asian Champs.
The highly prestigious All-Asian guernseys were relaunched in 2019 and for the first time this year, the Big Rooster will present the All-Asian guernseys as part of his legacy to AFL Asia and as part of what we hope is a new tradition moving forward.
This year sees an outstanding newly designed All-Asian guernsey with an Asian-styled lion synonymous with our proud region.
The All-Asian team guernseys have been designed and produced by AFL Asia’s Preferred Apparel Provider – Tribal Sport, who have also produced the Laos Elephants, Malaysian Warriors, Malaysian Warrior Women’s and PNG Muruks
guernseys ahead this year’s Asian Champs, as well as the China Reds and Japan Goannas guernseys during their 2019 Asian Champs campaigns.
Tribal Sport have also had club apparel relationships and associations with the Shanghai Tigers, Beijing Bombers, Eastern Hawks (AFL Japan), Osaka Dingoes and Tokyo Goannas, as well as producing the 2018 & 2019 AFL Asia Lions guernseys for their curtain-closer clashes against the Team AFL China Dragons in Shanghai, China.

A FLASHBACK TO 2004
AND THE RECORD OF THE RECORD
After a 2 year hiatus, the ’22 Asian Championships becomes the 22nd running of tournament that has to date swept across 8 countries and 10 host cities.
From humble beginnings, the Champs has continued to evolve, with each host club building incrementally on the foundation stones established in Bangkok (1999) and Jakarta (2000).
One notable enhancement was the formation of the glossy Football Record, produced initially by the Malaysian Warriors for the 2004 tournament
A look back at “edition 1” provides an historical and entertaining window into the personalities that competed that year from Malaysia, Singapore, HK, Thailand, China and the newly demerged Indonesian outfits of Jakarta and Bali.
42 2022 ASIAN CHAMPIONSHIPS RECORD
The 2004 cover features a rich menagerie of characters including Wombat legends Tony Boatman and Andrew Taylor, complemented by some impressive footy-card style set pieces from football troubadour Julian (the Rooster) Clarke, at that time hustling his wares in the non-traditional China colours of navy blue.
The bottom corner is reserved for a poignant photo of Jason McCartney, sporting a protective long sleeve Geckos jersey. The photo was taken in the full heat of a Bali game in October 2003, only 12 months into his recovery from the Bali bomb blasts and well before his inspirational return game for the Kangaroos the following year.
Thumbing through the pages, one’s eyes are immediately drawn to the Warrior’s welcome page and their grandiose new mantra “every man lives but not every man becomes a warrior”. Even more impressive, the article points out that the epiphany was first uttered by ex-Malaysia coach Geoff Blethyn, the heavily bespectacled Essendon legend well known to those raised on diet of 70s VFL footy.
AFL players cited in the playing lists include the aforementioned Andrew Taylor (Syd/Bris), Jakarta’s John White (Syd) and the legendary speedster Michael Conlan, whose bio for HK declares somewhat unconvincingly “Ex Fitzroy star in the 80’s but untried at international level”.
Featuring also in the team pages are references to regional footy royalty including journeyman Will Hamilton “shaping for his 15th season at the international level” and Kuta based gun Peter Muir “striving hard to win his 3r d tournament best player award”. Browsing the same Geckos page provides an opportunity to reflect on the wonderful talent and humanity of their newly minted 2004 skipper Matty Scarff who sadly passed away in December last year.
Those tributes sit in contrast to a number of less subtle inclusions such as Michael (Farmer) Robertson “Dragons President and loose canon”, Simon Hill “has captained China to all of their losses in last 2 Asian Champs” and the hapless Craig Francis whose career CV has been condensed to “Bogan from Kwinana. No tatts though”.
In terms of tournament outcomes from that year, later additionsoftheRecordwillhavereportedthatthe 2004 event was played in miserably wet conditions, with new Jakarta recruit Grant Dooley (AFL Asia Advisory Board member) carted off to hospital with a nasty skull fracture after an accidental collision. HK then prevailed over their long-time nemesis Singapore in a tough final.
So, whether you’re a potential All-Asian medallist or a tatt-less bogan from Kwinana, be sure to file away a copy of the 2022 Asian Championships Record as a timeless momento of your days playing footy and making friends in Asia. Good luck to all players!
Rob Spurr is a member of the AFL Asia Advisory Board and captained Indonesia to victory in the 2002 Asian Championships in Singapore.
