educational needs not only for the governorate of Sharkya, the 3rd most populous of the
governorates of Egypt with an area of 4,180 km², but also the other near governorates
which don’t have a STEM school. Our school is in Zagazig city which is located in the
eastern part of the Nile delta, our city Zagazig is a big city with 529,100 people according to
2016 Census, It overlooks the Nile, Mois and Ismailia Lakes, and the Muiz Canal. The city is
located 85 kilometers northeast of Cairo, the capital of Egypt..

98% and get the full mark in maths or science or English to be eligible for applying to the school.
students who achieve at least 95% of the total marks in 9th grade must get the full marks in maths
, science and English. Eligible students take an entrance exam (composed of Math, Science, IQ,
and Arabic tests) to select the top 150 students to be admitted to the school. Our school accepts

School accreditation

Sharkya STEM high school is a boarding comprehensive three-year public high school that enrolling
students in grades 10 to 12. The school started in the fall of 2018-2019 and it has Grades 10 ,11 and 12 this
Academic year. Sharkya STEM high school is accredited by the Ministry of Education, Ministry of Higher
Education & Higher Commission for Scientific Research - HCSR

Education System

One of the most important reasons that makes our school unique is the entire sessions system in the class of 25
students, depending on their discussions, so for every learning outcome, there is a group of 4 students
responsible for searching the concepts, presenting, suggesting extra materials and discussing with the other
class members, and the teacher here is a facilitator, instructor and supporter. In addition, we have practical
sessions that provide understanding, modeling and imagination of scientific concepts in our science labs.

Capstone & student research

In addition, to apply the curriculum into a practical way, students are required to do a project addressing
one of Egypt’s grand challenges. In capstone projects, students work in groups and follow the engineering

Sharkya STEM high school – 2018/2022 school profile – Page (2)

design process to generate innovative solutions for such challenges. The solution must be applicable,
affordable, efficient, and safe. At the end of each semester, the groups exhibit their projects to a group of
experienced and specialized Professors to evaluate them.
The students address one grand challenge every semester. The challenges are:

1- Increase the efficient use of our land through improved use of arid areas (grade 10 Semester 1)
2- Improve the use of alternative energies to reduce our reliance on extracted fuel sources (grade 10

Semester
3- Improve sources of clean water (grade 11 Semester 1)
4- Drive economic vitality in Egypt by increasing the industrial base (grade 11 Semester 2)
5- Work to eradicate public health issues (grade 12 Semester 1)

Academic curriculum

Our school curriculum is an open-ended one; that is, we don’t rely on one resource or
textbook. Students shape their way of learning and choose their resources to meet the concepts
they are required to know and the skills they are supposed to gain. However, there are textbooks
that are extremely recommended by curricular designer, the ones taught in class.

Our curriculum is a STEM integrated curriculum, design-focused and trans- disciplinary,
driven by the Egyptian Grand Challenges (real-world challenges) and capstone projects. Students
meet in subject classes daily, 80 minutes per session, and Capstone classes 80 minutes twice per
week. Grades are given for subjects and for Capstone projects. We have Grade 10, so students
work on their subjects and Capstone projects. While Advanced Placement courses guide some of
the lab experiences for the sciences, there is no Advanced Placement courses (USA College
Board) offered at the school. The student is considered gifted and talented and therefore ALL
courses are deemed honors-level courses. All courses are in English and the official language of
instruction in English.

Activities within the school

Art, Music, P E and Library are our core activities. Our students enrolled in many arts, music
and sport competitions inside and outside the school. For instance, our students in Sharkya got
the second position all over the country in French singing completion held by the French culture
center in 2018/2019 & 2020/2021 academic years.

Students in the school are free to form any club that will enrich their knowledge, skills
and attitudes towards any concept related to their studying and to their identities.

Boarding school experience

As our school is a boarding school, we are taking care of students 24 hours for 4 days
starting on Sunday and they go home by the end of the school day on Thursday, we have boys and
girls in our school, each group has his own accommodation building, they meet if necessarily – for
example preparing for a project or event - under supervision, according to our society values and
customs, our school day starts on 7:30 am to 3:05 pm, then all students go back to the
accommodation building, they conduct many events after the school time, some of them courses
to help their colleagues in the school subjects, or for helping them in some projects.

Fab Lab (digital fabrication)

Sharkya STEM high school is one of other 14 STEM schools in Egypt, which each of them
has its own Fab Lab, which is an environment that promotes innovation and education by
providing collaborative open makerspace equipped with digital fabrication and prototyping
machines & tools and hands-on workshops & training using MIT based curriculum. Students
benefit in many fields from the fab lab and its components, they use laser cutter, mono fab, shop

bot, 3d printer, and other machines in building their prototypes, they learn how to use all the
machine under supervision of a Lab manager, and practice what they learned in the capstone
project in a safe environment. STEM Fab Lab supports the innovation and de sign work in all
subject areas and capstone projects. With a goal of empowering the students in different sectors,
students are encouraged to participate in designing and making the products they use such as
physical objects and machines to materialize their ideas.

Laboratories within the school

We have other 5 labs, Chemistry, Physics, Biology, Geology, and Mechanics, the main
purpose of these lab is to help students in applying what they learn in these subjects, in each lab
students do experiments, investigate, practical work, and other work may help them in their
capstone’ projects.

Examination System

Student final scores depend on several stages of evaluation not only the final exam. The student to be assessed to pass
for the next grade, he should achieve 60% in each subject. The evaluation system in grade 3 differs from grades 10
