SHOWING SENTENCES VS TELLING SENTENCES

• “Show Me, Don’t Tell Me” is an approach to writing a more vivid paragraph as it breathes
life and energy into any story.

• “Telling” sentences tell us something and gives general, non-specific and often vague
ideas

• “Showing” sentences show us - they describe the scene and actions, they help us see by
using clear, specific details to create clear, strong pictures in our minds.

• “Showing” sentences will get the reader to experience the story as if the reader is there
participating in the story.

• Now … let’s look at some examples
Touch hear

Telling Sentence Showing Sentence
Tasha was afraid As the footsteps tapped closer and closer, Tasha felt his stomach
muscles tighten. She flattened herself to the wall, the gritty bricks
against her cheek.

Lina was afraid.

touch
• In the “telling” sentence, we are given information but in a way that doesn’t involve the

reader
• In the “showing” sentence however, the reader is brought in the scene along with Lina.

Here the 5S (sense of touch, smell, feel, see, hear) factor is used

see feel
hear touch

smell

Tasha was
afraid.

• So, the secret of a showing sentence is it’s beautifully simple with specified details that
brings life and stimulates the reader’s imagination so that the reader could project him or
herself into the scene and become part of the story.

SECTION C
[25 Marks]
[Time suggested: 50 minutes]
Questions 26 to 31 are based on the following passage.
1 It was early in the morning. I still remember how refreshing the morning air was. How the
birds were chirping happily, how the dew dripping from the leaves of the trees, and the smell
of delicious food been cooked that maybe coming from my neighbour’s house when they were
preparing breakfast. I was five years old and was helping my mom to water her plants and by
helping, what I really meant was staring at my mom doing all of the jobs.
2 To be very honest, the main purpose of me waking up that early in the morning was not because
of my willingness to help my mother but I was actually waiting for that one particular sound
that could bring out all happiness in this whole world. I was actually waiting for the ice cream
man bell’s sound. There was something different about this man’s chocolate ice cream. There
will no brand of ice cream that can taste as scrumptious as his chocolate ice-cream!
3 But sadly, I slowly started to feel that my sacrifice (waking up early in the morning) that I had
made turned out to be useless. After 30 minutes of waiting, he was not there yet. He usually
would pass by my house’s gate sharp at 8.30am in the morning but he was nowhere to be found.
But, after five minutes, I could hear the bell sound from afar. My sleepiness and worried had
suddenly left my body and my excitement had replaced them!
4 I quickly ran towards the gate and tried my very best to open it up but that was when I realized
that the gates were locked. I looked at my mom and scream as loud as I could to ask her help to
bring me the key while jumping anxiously. Scared that the ice-cream man did not want to wait
for me. Scared that he did not realize my small hand that waved in order to try to make him
stopped. I could see my mom ran all the way from the orchid’s gazebo into our house to get me
the gates’ key and also the money to buy the ice-cream. When I turned to the ice- cream man,
I saw he looked straight towards me and I can feel a sudden relief to know that he had noticed
me.
5 But he only turned his body around again and rode his motorcycle away. I was shocked. There
were so many things that I wanted to asked him. Like, did not he notice me? I was jumping and
even screamed to call him. When my mom arrived at where I was standing, she was shocked
to see there was no ice-cream man on his motorcycle, waiting in front of our gates. As a five
years old kid, there was nothing more painful than been ignored by the ice-cream man. But my
mom calmed me down and told me there must be a reason to why he did not stop for me and
that was my last time waiting for the ice-cream man. That was the last time I saw him.
6 But it was a few week ago, when I went home for my semester break my mom told me
something that really broke my heart. It was heart breaking but also made me believe that
kindness still exist. It made me believe that humanity is still the greatest value that a human can

20

BAHASA INGGSEPRIMS

have. My mother told me, she met my favourite ice-cream man during my childhood. She was
walking around in a supermarket and that was when she bumped into him. She immediately
approached him and asked him how he was doing. Asking him whether he still with his ice-
cream business and whether he still sells his delicious chocolate ice-cream. He was taken aback
but then he smiled so widely when he remembered my mom. After he answered my mother’s
questions, he asked my mother a question that made her so overwhelmed.
7 “Is your small daughter has grown up to be a woman now? I am sorry but I always remember
her small hand waving and calling me whenever she wanted to buy my chocolate ice-cream.
She will jump around with huge eyes and excitement. I remember how her eyes will glow with
happiness whenever she taste the ice-cream. I am sorry that sometimes I did not wait for her
and just rode away, that was because there was no chocolate ice-cream left or I did not manage
to make some. I do not want to break her heart by telling her that her favourite ice- cream has
finished”
8 I was surely overwhelmed and taken aback but that ice-cream man has taught me that we cannot
give up on kindness and we will never know one’s truest intention. Just as much as I did not
know the ice-cream man’s honest intention when he ignored me and rode his motorcycle away,
just as much as that we could not assume one’s honesty and truest intention over something. In
our society nowadays, there are many people that think only about themselves.
9 Kindness is a boomerang. But sometimes, it is not. Whenever the kindness is not returning
to us immediately, do not think or assume that there is no kindness left in this whole world.
Just as much as I should not stop waiting for my ice-cream man every morning even though
he maybe rode his motorcycle away from me, just as much as that we cannot stop hoping and
fighting for kindness. I should not give up on him. I should not give up on his kindness. We are
the one who move the kindness around. Remember that there will be one way or another that
kindness that we do today, will return to us in future. Just like Mahatma Gandhi once said, ‘be
the change that you wish to see in this world’. I wish to see more people like my ice-cream man
exist in this world. I wish to see the lost gem of kindness, exist. Again.

THE LIVING PHOTOGRAPH
By

Jackie Kay

My small grandmother is tall there,
straight-back, white broderie anglaise shirt,

pleated skirt, flat shoes, grey bun,
a kind, old smile round her eyes.
Her big hand holds mine, white hand in black hand.
Her sharp blue eyes look her own death in the eye.

It was true after all; that look.
My tall grandmother became small.

Her back round and hunched.
Her soup forgot to boil.

She went to the awful place grandmothers go.
Somewhere unknown, unthinkable.

But there she is still,
in the photo with me at three,
the crinkled smile is still living, breathing.

SECTION C
[25 marks]
(Time suggested: 50 minutes]
Questions 26-31 are based on the following passage.
1 I often think about my childhood friend, Ismail. Back in the early 60s, our f a m i l i e s
lived a stone’s throw from each other on the outskirts of Kuala Lumpur, surrounded by a vast
expanse of rubber and oil palm trees. Ismail’s father was the plantation lorry driver and Ismailwas
the eldest of five children. No one was bothered that Ismail was a Malay Muslim and we were
Indian Hindus. We just accepted our differences.
2 We must have been nine when we became friends.Ismail,my elder bro.ther Jothi and
I would watch with fascinatoi n as his father busied himself in his workshop. Ismai’ls father,
a genialbear of a man,was a handyman of sorts. Once he converted a huge cylindrical glass
container into an aquarium. We were thrilled whenever we had the chance to help him with his
tools.
3 In time, the three of us built a den from discarded zinc sheets and old wooden planks
not far from our homes. Here, we spent many a sultry afternoon, away from my younger sister
Prema, a curious seven-year-old who constantly wondered what her secretive brothers were up
to. We would enjoy the sugarcane and guavas that Ismail brought from his garden. We would
provide the tapioca, kitchen utensils and salt, all surreptitiousy taken from our home. Mom
was suspicious at times but she never made a fuss over her ‘missing’ utensils. After washing the
tapioca using water from a nearby stream,we then sliced it into thin half-moon discs, sprinkled
on a little salt and deep fried them in the wok over an open fire. That was how we made our own
tapioca chips.Ihave never tasted better ones.

4 During the school holidays, we would explore the countryside on our bicycles, hoping to
come across the unexpected. Going zipping past the cliffs with a sheer ravine falling away on the
other side of the path was exhilarating! Stopping to catch our breath, we would watch the flash
of colour as a kingfisher flew by. These experiences filled us with a sense of adventure and awe.
5 Perhaps because he was the oldest child, Ismail acted responsibly and was seldom
emotional. He had a steady hand and was quick to help. Once, he deftly removed a thorn that
had pierced my foot while we were swimming in a stream.
6 Occasionally, during the weekends, Jothi and l would go to Ismail’s house. His 30 younger
sisters minded baby Udin. as their mother. a petite woman in a sarong, smiled and busied
herselfIn the small kitchen. I remember once she stewd chicken while the children peered into
the pot and murmured “delicious. Just like my family, they rarely had meat. At times Ismail
would accompany our family as we made a rare shopping trip to town. We would be glad of his
company. The shy smile on his face spoke a thousand words.
7 The years passed and memories of my childhood days grew hazy. One dismal afternoon
in mid 1983, I stopped a taxiin Kuala Lumpur and got in just as the skies opened up. l stated my
destination and prayed that Iwould not be late for my job interview. There was a recession and
jobs were scarce. The driver, a small, neatly 40 dressed man, looked intently at me through his
mirror. “RaddarT he said, using my childhood nickname. I was astonished at being so familiarly
addressed. There was no mistaking that shy smile -it was Ismail!
8 As Igrasped his shoulder over the front seat, I felt a genuine affection, something hard
to describe. He patted my hand and said “I haven’t seen you in a while, friend: We chatted as he
drove. Ismails parents were well. His sisters were married and so was he. His word as a taxi driver
was temporary. He would soon be heading to Pahang to work. Someone once said: “Friendship
- pure, unselfish friendship - nurtures, strengthens andlengthens a relationship.”
