Shakespeare in the Age of COVID-19

Poems and Flash Fiction by Young Indians

One and Gone

There was an unearthly chill. Death was in the air. Mistress of the
manor Lady Macbeth knew that it was none of her business to make
her tenants stay in town when everyone was trying to go back to their
native places. But the fact that she had received that month’s rent
from everyone and many of the tenants came from far off places,
made her to make sure they were safe from the fast spreading COVID-
19. Now under the lockdown they can’t go anywhere, anyway.
The dusk was fast approaching. It was time for all the tenants to come
down for a get together session which they had been having since the
beginning of the lockdown. First Hamlet came downstairs and soon
following him Viola, her twin Sebastian, Othello and Lear. They had
recently lost Julius Caesar, another tenant to the virus. Everyone was
wary of the other and she knew all the sanitisers of the world couldn’t
clean her hands. But if this was their last day she wanted it to be worth
it. For all they knew, they were in this together now.

Sunshine in Shadows

“Room No.28, patient on the second bed, reported to be dead”.
Crossing the emergency ward, in a hurry Rosalind picks up the call
but immediately had to switch off. Orlando sighs, as his darling
doesn’t respond him, he kneels down and looks above, her visage
hidden for a month. “A frontline warrior indeed”, he smiles.
Lost in his thoughts, wondering how he has become a couch potato,
a little happy over his melancholic prediction, of the melancholic
destruction of this melancholic world. His thoughts flashed in front of
him, Jacques grinned, “All the World’s a stage and all men and
women are merely players”. The thought of everyone following ‘stay
home stay safe’ method made Jacques mock, “when I followed
social distancing, they said it is madness, atleast now they have
understood the true essence of that madness”.
Amiens is singing, thinking of the beautiful world without the
interference of men and machines. Trying to reprimand Jacques is
foolishness, so he sings more loudly to ignore his melancholic snore.
Getting arrayed in his armour, Touchstone returns back home from
the nearby shop, “that idiot had the nerve to cough on my face”.
I (Shakespeare) pondered, “2020 with all its technologies couldn’t
face this Monster. Best way – HIDE IN THE PAVILLION and
fight back together”.

The Chosen

“Yet, here’s a spot.” Macbeth held his wife tighter, strong warrior arms
encircling her in a desperate attempt to keep away the creatures of the
night. Behind them, the muted television blinked the public health
guidelines. AVOID CONTACT. KEEPAWAY. SELF ISOLATE. Lady
Macbeth jerked out of his hands and Macbeth allowed it. He didn’t
want her powerless, not his strong companion, the steel mind to his
brute strength. She grabbed the hand sanitizer and kept on washing her
hands, chanting as if in a delirium.
“Wash. Lather. Back, front and between. 20 seconds. That’s important”.
For a moment he watched her, without interfering. He was being selfish,
he knew. She had requested and ordered him out of the room. “You are
scrubbing your hands raw, darling.” With gentle hands, he pried her
away from the wash basin. Enraged, she shouted at him. “My hands
smell of the blood”. Macbeth left, cursing the mortality of the human
race and the plague which always left out survivors.
And the swirling Black Death swooped in, rendering time and space
irrelevant.

The Pathetic Story of Macbeth

King Duncan was ruling Scotland and Macbeth was a General in his
army. Duncan was distressed because many were dying of Covid-19.
MacDonwald, a Thane was found to be positive and had escaped from
his castle without any treatment. However, Macbeth had captured and
quarantined him. The King congratulated Macbeth and wanted to dine
with him.
Later, Duncan came to Macbeth’s castle.Lady Macbeth greeted him.
Macbeth was hiding himself. However, he dined with Duncan. Duncan
went to a chamber to take rest. Later,Duncan was found ill and doctors
found him positive. Many blamed Macbeth for hiding his illness. They
remembered Macbeth sneezing in public before 14 days but he
suggested it to be a common cold and refused to take a checkup. The
king died following the death of Macbeth.Malcolm ascended the throne.
Lady Macbeth was found negative. In her sleep walk, she washed her
hands continuously because her illusion made her see viruses in her
palm. She tried to kill herself, but she was saved. After 8
months, Scotland recovered from Covid-19.

The Prelude

In a basement just outside the city two people are seen.
The preparations are over”, said one of them.
“Then let’s begin”, echoed the other person.

***
In the court of city magistrate, a person barged inside the office.
“Friar, what’s the matter I have never seen you this much flustered
before”, said a person sitting behind a desk.
He was Claudius, the magistrate of this city.
“Sir, a plague has spread in our city, the same plague which has affected
another country a month ago”, he replied short of breath.
Claudius’ expression became serious“.
He ordered. “Put the whole city under lockdown and take necessary
action”
“Yes sir”, replied Friar.
Seeing Friar leave, Claudius thought with a deep frown. “The whole
matter and its timing reeks of conspiracy.”
Some hours later Friar returns.
“Sir, the situation is not good, the infected are still increasing and if this
goes on, this city will spiral into anarchy”.
Hearing this report Claudius’ expression became ugly.

***
In a study room, a person with thin moustache and wavy hair puts
down his quill; he smiles and mutters, “I say this is a satisfying prologue.”

Toil and Trouble

Macbeth leaned back in his chair, tired from staring at his laptop for the
best part of the day. He imagined himself as a beast stuck in a cage.
Something so formidable, reduced to cower in a space too small for it.
He felt the beginnings of a headache creeping in as he got up and
walked to the bathroom.
He knocked on the bathroom door and asked, “Honey, is everything
okay?”
A muttered ‘yes’ came as answer.
“At least her OCD finally paid off”, he thought as his wife stepped out,
a sharp odour of rose scented hand wash accompanying her.
“How was the conference? Did you get the promotion?”
“No, Malcolm got it.”
“But you worked so hard for it”.
“Yes, but I’m not the boss’s son, am I?” he said, hoping the mocking
tone masked his bitterness.
“I always hated that boss of yours. I hope he gets the virus and dies”,
she muttered.
Macbeth smirked; he loved that sharp tongue of hers. Feeling oddly
comforted, he closed the bathroom door behind him, not noticing the
glint of a catastrophic idea beginning to take form inside his wife’s mind.

“Douse ‘em in strong booze- kill germs, heal people”, Malvolio said
confidently.

“Your idiocy knows no limit”, Portia snapped, “One of these days, I’ll
carve your brain out!”. Malvolio shrugged and called in the next
applicant.
“Why should we hire you Mr. Junior?”. Portia gathered an air of
authority.
“My confidence in myerudition.”
“How do you save the world when you doubteverything?”, Portia
prodded.
“Why not? See for yourself – men die, world heals. So, the question is,
to grieve or not to grieve”.
“Thank you, Mr Junior, we’ll keep you posted”. They shook hands.
“We should replace these dusty drapes”, Malvolio broached as Junior
left. “We should make hankies out of it. Donate ‘em- a dime a piece?”.
“You’re fired”, she eased into her solitude as Malvolio left. She tried
the new perfume.
“This won’t work”, a voice sang from the glass case of perfume.
“What are you implying Ariel?” Portia asked.
“It’s not the world that needs saving, but mankind”. Ariel said“Say-
what’s your name?”
“Portia. Portia Macbeth Cleopatra”, she whiffed the French roses.
“What about it?”

“That you’re too lost to save yourself”, Ariel faded into thin air.

A Global Haven

As Covid 19 pandemic pursued its relentless rampage of the world, a
grand building replicated in the form of the Globe Theatre served as a
quarantine shelter for the renowned playwright William Shakespeare’s
array of characters.
On the main stage, Julius Caesar, Alonso and Duncan, accompanied by
other kings joined forces to formulate plans to face the crisis.
Hamlet hovered near the threshold, undecided whether to step out or
not. Seeing Ophelia approach, him, he pointed to Romeo and Juliet,
who, complying with social distancing, exchanged flying kisses from
opposite balconies.
Knights and fools alike pleaded Prospero to conjure up some magical
vaccine to fight the global threat. Prospero helplessly shook his head,
inwardly cursing his resolve to abandon magic for good.
Antonio pacified a wretched Shylock, grieving over his plummeting
shares in the stock market. Cordelia and Portia had stuck a bond and
oversaw a large-scale production of face masks and sanitisers.
With evil plans suspended, ill wills forgotten, there formed a new
humanitarian haven where fraternity and equality reigned supreme to
ward of an unseen common enemy. Thus, the miniature Globe set a
dramatic example for the whole globe to follow.

Othello, the Cov’idiot’

Amidst the threatening pandemic, Othello decided to organise a party
for his mates on the event of his wedding as well the victory over
Ottomans whose fleet drowned due to the spread of COVID-19.
Ignoring all the safety measures, Othello made a social gathering.
The dispositions in party contracted several hosts for the virus.

With all men coughing and falling sick, Othello now decided to quarantine
at his house. Iago often sent his wife Emilia, who had the symptoms of
COVID-19 to meet Desdemona. Since Desdemona enjoyed the
company of Emilia, she never considered her visits to be contagious.
Desdemona contracted the virus and isolated everyone from
her including Othello. Emilia during one such visit took away
Desdemona’s handkerchief which was presented to her by Othello as
a symbol of his love.

Iago now placing the kerchief carefully in Cassio’s chamber started
prejudicing the relationship of Cassio with Desdemona to Othello. Othello
who could no longer stand up with the rumours of his beloved wife,
doubted her in terms of her sickness. Seeing Cassio using his wife’s
handkerchief he blindly surrendered as a cov’idiot. In terms of
adultery, Othello finally smothered her despite her respiratory trouble
caused by the disease.

Dalgona

“Human trials of the medicine are successful and we suppose… we
have found the cure to the pandemic. To be appreciated is the team of
21 doctors lead by Dr. Romeo Montague. They have shown ...”

The medical technologist Dr. Brunner was caught by a flurry of
questions in the press conference. The agitated crowd, the camera
flashes of the media, and the air of anxiety in the hall somehow felt
strange and suffocating for Romeo. He pushed away from the crowd,
acknowledging the appreciative pats on his shoulder from his colleagues.
Turning his back on the conference hall, he walked, he had to see
someone. Someone who mattered more than anyone in this world. The
corridor to the general ward was lit not by tube lights but by a new
found hope which kept rising in all hearts behind the walls on either
side. He too was happy but yet he could not celebrate. Though he
knew she was taken good care of in the General Ward, he couldn’t. As
he was making his way past the Cafeteria at the end of the corridor, his
legs came to a halt. They seem to remember how they found it tiring to
carry his trunk a few days back on the same corridor.

For the first time in his life, that day, when he was returning from his
rounds in the isolation ward,he felt his job heavier than his life. His
hands seemed to tremble and repel to hold the stethoscope. That sight
of her struggling to breathe was beyond his strength to behold. He had
somehow got himself out of the room, not daring to look her in the
eyes. He ordered a Dalgona from the Cafe. She’d say after a long day,
“I know just what you want now. Let’s go get that Dalgona thing in
your cafe ....” Winking she’d lead him to the chair that sat in the corner.
Each sip brought back swirls of memories of the good times they had
spent together. They tried to twitch his nerves, stab his heart, but this
time, he stood firm. This time, neither Shakespeare nor some stupid
bottle of poison could take them apart. His mind was racing, his eyes
unblinking, he felt invulnerable for a moment.

A Bunch of Red Roses!

It was his wife’s birthday, Othello bought a bunch of roses from a little
boy, along with a woman lying shrunken behind him. He heard the boy
telling, “Don’t worry Mum, you’ll be okay.” holding her hands.

Othello asked the boy about the women. He replied, “She is very sick-
a fever”. Othello paid the boy more than the price of the bunch of
roses. On the evening, Othello gave the bunch of roses to his wife
amongst the invitees wishing her ‘Happy Birthday,’ shared a hug.

One of the invitees, “An infectious virus outspreaded in China you
know?”

Another, “Don’t bother yourself thinking about China, we’re Italian.”
The gathering giggled.

Othello’s wife said “But the virus is contagious people are instructed to
avoid interactions and to wash hands repetitively.”

From gathering, “Like Lady Macbeth!”

Othello’s wife, “Perhaps.”

After a week Othello felt sick, his wife called the doctor and a medical
team came and asked him, “Have you interacted with someone having
these similar symptoms?”

Othello replied “Not likely”. His wife told him, “Try to remember well.”

Then Othello said, “Those red roses was bought from a boy having
mother was sick beside him,I paid extra money also.”

The medical team told Othello, “You’ve bought the virus Mr. Othello,
not red Roses.”

Othello gave the addresses of invitees and left with the team.Othello’s
wife heard a news channel speaking how the pandemic affected Italy
mostly, people are being told to not go out, wash hands repetitively. Her
teary eyes looked at those bunch of red roses kept in a vase.

Dear Father,
Everything seemed, to happen, in a strange manner. People died, like a
pack of cards. Two strangers with a medical kit and water like liquid
approached me. I was frightened by their looks. Was tested and put in
a lonely confinement, puzzled me. Later to my horror, I learnt I had
contracted the Novel Corona Virus or Covid 19 as it is being known. I
felt trapped in an unknown surrounding. As you had taught me, prayed
to the Lord Almighty for the welfare of the world. Feeling as if dark,
unseen forces have prevailed over the world. Yearning to be with you,
each and every second....

Holms

Neither the cursed hebenon in a vial nor such dexterity to incestuous
sheets that stood as the causal for the gravedigger to raise his spade for
me!
Neither was I damned with procrastination that is in the end disastrous
nor he screamed “Avenge me”; finally, to spill my hot blood out of that
unabated sword!
Neither was I a slave to jealousy nor were none of them Machiavellian!
Neither was it my violent temper and misjudgement that proved my
undoing and transformed me into an insane!
Neither was I possessed of black and deep desires nor vaulting ambition
that conjured up a ghost who was prematurely ripped from his mother’s
womb!
Darkness crept into his chamber. Raven drifts above his head. The
four dreaded spirits of tragic heroes have united to bid adieu to their
CREATOR. The brow shaded by the peak of the cap, the rheumy
eyes, and the bulbous nose start revolting against virus.
HOLMS reminded SHAKESPEARE about something rotten in his
psyche of literature with a spectre lurking like Minos; about the Ides of
March; about the inevitable death; and the countless days ahead in
inferno. But the Angel of DEATH offered him the second chance...!

No Effort is Small

“It’s all going to end soon, we’ll meet then.” Juliet put on her mask and
PPE kit. Each sample she tested, she hoped it would be negative. Caius
forgot his meals as he patrolled all day long. He missed his children
running up to door when he came home. Dr. Pinch was arrested because
he spread fear and claimed “papaya leaves in warm water” healed
many. Portia’s wisdom and timely judgement saved lives. She gave
orders to isolate those who could be still prone, stood with those who
endured pain with patience and calmly took all the blame for not
being everywhere. She protected her people from the pandemic to her
best and that was enough for her. The air cleared, people were reunited
and the Earth recovered ready for her next battle. Caesar called upon
a meeting and declared, “Senators, the war is over.” At last, love’s
labour has won.

The Art Haven

Lockdowns seem incessant and ghost-towns seem prevalent. Will and
his company had created the channel “The Globosphere”. Due to the
pandemic, the channel skyrocketed to popularity and has become a
medium of caremongering. Their highly anticipated live-stream featuring
their characters in the present COVID-19 situation was to be launched
today. Will checked in on his children through conference video call.
His son Romeo dwelled in Italy, ever in love but restrained by
pandemiquette. For him maintaining distance and ‘flying masked kisses’
were true love. Whereas Will’s elder son, Hamlet was content with
the vogue. His quarantime involved ruminating and doomscrolling in
Denmark. His daughters Viola and Beth were as woke as possible.
Beth was a victim of both OCD and Pre-traumatic Stress Disorder.
She was seldom found not washing herself.

The forever brazen Viola was struggling with Covid-22 but never failed
to indulge in quarantinis. She adored to adorn masks and proclaim
herself as the “Personatus”. The sisters resided in Scotland. Will had
taken inspiration from his children for his works. Their idiosyncrasies
amused him always. He was confident that it would do the same for
his audience. For it is difficult to find the word ‘amusement’ in a
pandemictionary.

Shakespeare in the Age of COVID-19 65

The Leveller

Never had it occurred to young Hamlet that the air he breathed was so
shared. The virus’s stain spread in it like an inkdrop in water. With
Polonius’ death, all were convinced that the pandemic had no reverence
for office. His son whined at how they discarded his body; no rituals or
ceremony, like a thing unholy. The daughter, warned by her father’s
disease, took to isolation, singing of the old man and her lover denied.
Hamlet passes her room with heavy heart; already weighed by his
father’s suspicious demise and now the journey to Wittenberg cancelled.
He witnesses the king, filling the chapel with words of an old guilt mixed
with fears for his regime. The king fumbled to change subject. “Hamlet,
my kin... do wear a mask for everyone’s sake.”
“Aye sir, I will. But not well as you mask yourself.”
Hamlet walks on. The thought that himself could be a potential host, a
murderer- like his uncle, in this grand tragic script plagued him. The
Globe churned below his feet. The whole of humanity stood there with
him, threatened by the same enemy. They could only hope that this
doesn’t end as if penned by the Elizabethan.

The Shakespeare Residency

I’m William from Stratford. Like the rest of the word, the pandemic
had hit my town. We are quarantined, which means no school and I
miss my friends. Once the lockdown is lifted, I’ll hike with Richard and
Hamnet.
Meanwhile I’m helping my father maintain his apartment. Although
I’m not familiar with the residents, I’m aware of their stories, which I
keenly listen during supper when father tells it to mother.
The never-ending episode of the Macbeth household makes me think
“they are so strange”! The lady of the house has OCD, she never
shakes hands, you’ll find her near the washbasin ‘washing her hands’
always. Her husband gifted sanitisers for their anniversary.
Iago her elder son, a kleptomaniac, this boy, stealing fancy handkerchiefs.
His collections stitched together will cover the whole of Dover Castle.
Romeo, the second born is everyone’s ‘lover boy’. You’ll find him angling
beautiful girls in balconies. I wonder if Cupid struck the arrow at his
brain instead of heart.
Everyone is social distancing. Neither Iago will find a handkerchief to
steal nor Romeo will hunt for balcony girls. Their mother will teach
them cleanliness. Especially “WASHING HANDS”.

ALover’s Testimony

In the isolation ward lay Othello thinking about what he has done to
Desdemona. Yes, he killed her trusting the words of Iago. In search of
Desdemona to find the truth, what Othello saw was the handkerchief
of another man in the box. In anger he killed her after which he realized
that it was not his handkerchief and Iago played him. But the most
dangerous thing was that Othello proved positive for corona. Disrupting
and guess how it was spread through that dirty handkerchief which
Othello thought, his love was cheating him by. Tit for Tat. Never believe
by others words learnt Othello.

Horatio’s Testimony

Oh, young Fortinbras, cease your search. For here lies the wonder, a
monstrous plight! Bloodily lays dead, Noble Hamlet, a dismal sight.
This scarlet bath of thousands down, Oh, brave Fortinbras, let me report
the cause alright. Grounded lies by the cold body of the incestuous
Dane, and many innocents alike. All brought down by the potent poison
of the damned virus. A treacherous instrument, envenomed, a foul
practice turned on him. It is no virus that bring thee down, but the
poisoned soul. There hath not been a disease more murderous than in
the sweet name of revenge. Oh, young Fortinbras, never let repeat, for
may the flights of angels sing hymns of brotherhood today!
