12 ABSTRAK (Oral presentation) CARDIAC NURSE’S KNOWLEDGE IN NURSING MANAGEMENT OF MYOCARDIAL INFARCTION IN CARDIOLOGY DEPARTMENT QUEEN ELIZABETH HOSPITAL 2. Joann Joo Kehit¹, Murni Khairani Yazed ¹ ¹Queen Elizabeth Hospital II, Kota Kinabalu, Ministry of Health Malaysia, Sabah, Malaysia. Introduction: Coronary artery disease (CAD) is the leading cause of global morbidity and mortality. CAD accounts for 15.9% of all deaths worldwide. Chest pain is the most common complaint and leading cause of emergency department visits in patients with CAD. Cardiac related chest pain is associated with fatal outcomes. Therefore, prompt identification and treatment of a CAD-related chest pain is critical to the treatment outcomes. Failure to perform timely assessment and management has been reported and often associated with adverse patient outcomes such as death. Objective: To determine the knowledge of cardiac nurses in the nursing management of acute myocardial infarction (AMI) and the relationship of their knowledge with the selected demographic data. Methodology: This study is quantitative and cross-sectional in nature. It was conducted in the Cardiology Department of Queen Elizabeth Hospital II, involving 50 nurses in total. The questionnaire was adapted from a previous study with permission and distributed using Google forms. The scoring system was categorised as poor, average, and good knowledge. Results: The findings showed that 88% of the nurses in the cardiology department had achieved good scores whilst 12% attained average scores. There is a strong association between the nurses' knowledge and their length of service and level of education. Conclusion: This study shows that cardiac nurses who care for patients with STEMI have good knowledge. However, nurses should be trained in the assessment and urgent treatment of cardiac-related chest discomfort as well as ECG interpretation, and that they should also be encouraged to pursue advanced or specialized training such as cardiovascular nursing course. Administration support in the care of AMI patients is also needed, such as the provision of updated policies and guidelines as well as equipment such as functioning ECG machines all year round. Farah Hidayu Abdullah Zawawi¹, Rita Miki² ¹ Queen Elizabeth Hospital II, Kota Kinabalu, Ministry of Health Malaysia, Sabah, Malaysia. ² Institut Latihan Kementerian Kesihatan Malaysia, Kota Kinabalu, Sabah, Malaysia. Introduction: Overcrowding of patients in the Emergency Department (ED) is a negative healthcare phenomenon that has been described globally and is well known among healthcare providers for decades. Objective: To determine the factors causing overcrowding in the Emergency Department (ED) and the association between pending admission. Methodology: This is a quantitative study using a cross-sectional survey. Questionnaires were distributed to selected respondents and the data collection and analysis were completed within a year. The demographic characteristics, the factors, and the associations were analyzed using IBM SPSS Version 23. Results: The findings showed that the most significant factor contributing to patient overcrowding is pending admission (100%), followed by delay in laboratory results (96%), and unnecessary visits by patients to the emergency department (94%). A significant association was also found between pending admission and patient overcrowding. Conclusion: The findings of this study are comparable to studies from other countries, which indicated that pending admission, delayed laboratory results, and unnecessary or non-urgent visits to the ED as the most important causes of overcrowding in the department. Further studies are recommended to examine the satisfaction ratio between the organization, the healthcare providers, and the patients. 12 ABSTRAK (Oral presentation) PREVALENCE OF INSULIN ADHERENCE AND THE ASSOCIATED FACTORS AMONG PATIENTS WITH TYPE 2 DIABETES MELLITUS AT HOSPITAL QUEEN ELIZABETH II, SABAH. Yong, SY¹, Goh, GM², Loh, HH² ¹Malaysian Ministry of Health Training Institution Kota Kinabalu, Sabah ²Faculty of Medicine and Health Science, Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS) Introduction: Adherence to prescribed medication regimens, particularly to insulin, is reported as one of the factors that may benefit the treatment of T2DM. Unfortunately, a review of the literature showed that patients with T2DM often do not have good control of their disease, as they fail to adhere to their prescribed insulin treatment. Objectives: This study aimed to (a) identify the insulin adherence rate among patients with T2DM; (b) determine the T2DM patients’ perception and beliefs in relation to insulin adherence; (c) assess the factors that influence patients' perceptions and beliefs towards insulin adherence, and (d) determine the predictors of insulin non-adherence among patients with T2DM. Methods: An analytical cross-sectional survey was carried out on 360 T2DM outpatients at the Diabetes Clinic in Hospital Queen Elizabeth II (HQE II), Sabah. Insulin adherence was measured using a validated Medication Compliance Questionnaire (MCQ). Results: There was a significant correlation between insulin adherence and all the HBM constructs. The identified factors affecting the HBM constructs towards insulin adherence were age, years of diagnosed diabetes, duration on insulin injection, insulin regimens, and diabetes complications. Overall, the HBM constructs predicted 40.9% of the variance in insulin adherence. Conclusion: The current study indicates an acceptable level of insulin adherence among the T2DM outpatients in HQE II. It subsequently recommends the identification of high-risk group of non-adherences, adjustment of insulin regimen, and design of individual intensive health education to increase insulin adherence. 12 ABSTRAK (Oral presentation) COMPARING ONLINE LEARNING TO CONVENTIONAL METHODS: ASSESSING NURSING STUDENTS’ SATISFACTION AT THE UNIVESITY MALAYSIA SABAH Nurul Nadrah Binti Abdul Wahid¹, Norkiah Arsat², Hamidah Hassan², ¹ Institut Latihan Kementerian Kesihatan Malaysia, Kota Kinabalu, Sabah, Malaysia. ² Universiti Malaysia Sabah, Sabah, Malaysia. Introduction: As a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, the movement control order was implemented. This has interfered with the education of nursing students. Online learning was consequently implemented as an alternative to conventional learning. Nonetheless, the students had diverse reactions towards online education. It is believed that online learning enables students to comprehend lecture topics even when they are not present in the classroom, thereby enabling them to maintain exceptional academic performance. In addition, the learning methods influence the learning satisfaction of nursing students. Objective: To determine the nursing students’ satisfaction towards online learning as compared to the conventional method (face-to-face). Methodology: This was a non-experimental-cross-sectional comparative study using the purposive sampling method. A total of 57 samples had completed the questionnaire between mid- and end August 2022. Results: The study discovered no significant difference in the nursing students' satisfaction towards online learning and conventional learning, as evidenced by the P value of 0.114 at the α = .05 level. Conclusion: There was no significant difference in the nursing students' satisfaction with learning based on the learning method employed. In times of hardship, it is necessary to implement alternative pedagogical approaches, especially in crucial fields like nursing, in order to ensure the uninterrupted progression of educational programmes. A proposition has been put forth that online instruction can be employed as a means of imparting knowledge to nursing students during their training. Methods: A total of 136 parturient mothers were recruited using the convenience sampling method and then randomized to either intervention or control group using the sealed envelope system (Intervention: N=67; Control: N=69). The control group received routine care provided by the midwives in the labour room whereas the intervention group was provided with structured emotional labour support developed based on Swanson’s Theory of Caring in addition to routine care. The visual anologue scale and Bryanton Adaptation of the Nursing Support in Labour Questionnaire (BASILIQ) were used to measure labour pain and satisfaction, respectively. The data were analysed using descriptive statistics, independent t test, chi-square and Mann-Whitney U test on SPSS IBM version 20 and content analysis. Results: There was a statistically significant lower labour pain score (U=1061.5, p=.000) and higher satisfaction level towards emotional labour support in the intervention group compared to the control group (U=1654, p=.004). This significant difference was also found among subjects who had taken entonox gas (U=259.500, p=.000) and epidural analgesia (U=246.5, p=.010) during their labour, as well as among those who had not had any type of pain management (U = between 262-1020.5, p<0.05). The qualitative data showed that most of the subjects in both groups highlighted friendly and helpful nurses as helpful nursing behaviours and that most of them also suggested the need for emotional support during labour. Conclusion: This study not only demonstrates that emotional labour support is effective in reducing labour pain and increasing satisfaction instead of relying on obstetric analgesia, but also indicates that emotional support is highly needed by parturient mothers in Malaysia. These findings call for change in the standard midwifery practice in the country. Future research with larger sample sizes and higher number of trained interveners are warranted. 12 ABSTRAK (Oral presentation) ASSOCIATION BETWEEN SLEEP QUALITY AND MENTAL HEALTH STATUS AMONG NURSING STUDENTS Cathy Wellny Sumping¹, Noor Zainah Binti Abdullah², Muhamad Junaidi Bin Ibrahim³ ¹ Institut Latihan Kementerian Kesihatan Malaysia, Kota Kinabalu. ² Hospital Permai, Johor Bahru. ³ Hospital Sultanah Nur Zahirah, Kuala Terengganu. Introduction: A study on sleep quality in Malaysia had shown that 51.4% of nursing students have poor sleep quality. Unfortunately, poor sleep quality can cause mental health problems. Objective: To assess whether the mental health status of nursing students at Institut Latihan Kementerian Kesihatan Malaysia, Johor Bahru is affected by their sleep quality. Method: This is a quantitative, descriptive, cross-sectional study involving 136 nursing students at Institut Latihan Kementerian Kesihatan Malaysia, Johor Bahru conducted over the period of October 2018 – November 2018. A form for socio-demographic characteristic, the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index, and Saringan Status Kesihatan Mental were applied. Result: A total of 46 (33.8%) of the respondents demonstrated good sleep quality index (PSQI < 5), whilst 90 (66.2%) respondents showed poor sleep quality index (PSQI ≥ 5). A total of 77 (56.6%) respondents were indicated to be mentally healthy (SSKM=13), whilst 59 (43.4%) respondents required further psychiatric assessment (SSKM≥14). There is a significant relationship between mental health status and sleep quality (p=0.001, p<0.05). Conclusion: Mental health status is significantly affected by sleep quality. More research on sleep quality among nursing students is required to gain a greater understanding of the predictors and consequences associated with poor sleep quality. Evaluation of targeted interventions is needed to prevent poor sleep quality among nursing students. Background: Stoma care has been traditionally taught by enterostomal nurses to patients and caregivers through face-to-face teaching sessions. Several studies had analysed English YouTube videos on ostomy care in terms of content and quality. There are also other YouTube videos in other languages catering to non-English individuals. However, to date, no analysis study has been done on the quality and content of YouTube videos in Bahasa Malaysia on changing colostomy bags. Therefore, there is a need to assess the content and quality of YouTube videos in Bahasa Malaysia on ostomy care. Objective: To determine the content and quality of YouTube videos on the changing of colostomy bags. Methodology: This is a quantitative descriptive content analysis study analysing the content and quality of YouTube videos on changing colostomy bags. The research instruments utilized include the modified Procedure Checklist on changing colostomy bag from the Training Division, Ministry of Health Malaysia and the Global Quality Scale (GQS). Results: All the seven videos selected were examined by two independent enterostomal nurses. The videos achieved a mean content score of 8.57 (SD = 0.79) and mean quality score of 3.24 (SD = 0.35). All the videos were hence found to be somewhat useful for viewers. Conclusion: Due to the scarcity of YouTube videos on changing colostomy bags conducted in Bahasa Malaysia, there is a need to create more contents on ostomy care to cater to interested individuals especially those who speak the aforementioned language. Nurses should take the lead in this area as they are knowledgeable and clinically experienced in ostomy care.
