This trip had been challenging because of the weather and rough paddling—we would be glad for it to end.“Well in that case for the first time in four days, I’m going to have dry, warm feet, while I paddle.” I pointed to the map. “You see there’s only one portage left and it’s called the ‘Height of Land’ portage, so it’s bound to be high and dry, so I’m going to put on my dry runners and woolly socks.” I rubbed my cold feet in anticipation. It was the standard practice on any wilderness outing to protect your dry, nighttime gear—no matter the cost. On every canoe trip, you always wore water shoes or old runners that you didn’t mind getting wet in the canoe—hence your feet were always cold and wet. You guarded your dry shoes and socks—protecting them from moisture so that at least once daily your feet would be dry. So, in my determination to have warm feet for the last cold day of paddling, I was risking my dry shoes. But was it a risk—after-all the end was in sight? Only one portage and a twenty-kilometer paddle across Dog Lake stood between me and a warm shower, yummy food and soft bed. Ahhhhh.Coming this spring: Step into the WildNew Novel by P. COLLINS, Margaret - Of Espanola passed away at the Espanola Regional Hospital on Tuesday, April 28, at the age of 90. Beloved wife of the late Edwin Joseph Collins. Dear daughter of the late Dan and Ethel Bellmore. Margaret will be sadly missed by her children, grandchildren, friends and relatives. Cremation with a celebration of life at a later date. Arrangements by BOURCIER FUNERAL HOME, Ltd., Espanola. April 12, 1934 (Belleville Ontario) - April 24, 2026 (Espanola Ontario). Robert (Bob) McCarthy Dutton passed away at the Espanola Hospital at the age of 92 years. Dearly loved by his wife of 69 years, Patricia (Pat) Dutton (predeceased November 2025), his son, Rob Dutton (wife Cindy) of Quispamsis, New Brunswick, and daughter, Karen Dutton-Marion (husband Don Marion) of Calgary, Alberta. Cherished brother to Kathy Dutton, and dear brother-in-law to Midge and Gary Denault, Jim and Pat Spry, and Laura Dutton. Grandpa will be sadly missed by his grandchildren Kienan Marion (partner Jesse Divel) of Calgary, Riley Marion of Calgary, and Allison Dutton (partner Jaclyn) of Quispamsis, as well as many nieces and nephews, including the Dutton nephews Brian (Janice) and Chris of Belleville. He was predeceased by his parents, Louis and Eileen Wims Dutton, and his brother Tom Dutton (2011). Bob grew up in Belleville Ontario prior to moving north for work. Bob married the love of his life, Pat Spry, in May 1956 and settled in the Sudbury area where he worked for INCO until retirement. As a member of the Crean Hill Gun Club, Bob took part in competitive target shooting for many years, regularly adding trophies to his collection. Bob was excited and grateful this past summer to be honoured, alongside his good friend Joe Lapierre, as original founding members of the Crean Hill Gun Club. Bob enjoyed the sport immensely, and it was the wonderful friendships they developed that were most important to him. Our family will always cherish the wonderful memories of summers spent at the camp in Willisville where Dad and Mom introduced us to camp life, the Milky Way and the game of euchre - perfect for a family of four at the lake with no electricity or internet. In memory of Bob and his wife Pat, a celebration of life will be held in Espanola on May 2, 2026. In lieu of flowers or donations, the family kindly invites you to honour their memory by brightening someone's day - especially an older adult in need of care, time or companionship - through a thoughtful act of kindness. These acts would be the most meaningful tribute. You can rest easy now Dad; you are together again with Mom. Arrangements by BOURCIER FUNERAL HOME, Ltd., Espanola.
