Did you go along grudgingly? With a martyred look on your face and heavy stones in your shoes, as you dragged your sorry rump along? Sadly, I have and for some unremembered reason, the Missinaibi canoe trip was one of them. My heart was just not in it. This reluctant attitude affected everything—attitude matters! When I embark on a project, work or adventure with the wrong outlook, then bad outcomes often follow. Thankfully, God knows what I need to learn and lovingly uses situations to teach me. In fact, I suspect that God must smile—when I fall into the very pit that I have dug, because it’s only at the bottom—that I look up. Welcome to another one of my pits.It was early spring in 1995, when we left our Manitowaning farm and children in the capable hands of Bob’s parents to set out on a five-day adventure into the wilds of Northern Ontario. We’d waited all year for this vacation—planned and plotted the route as we poured over maps in January. It was to be our escape from the busyness of life. A time to commune with nature and each other. This time we decided to tackle a canoe trip route that would begin and finish in the town of Missanabie, which is a small community in Ontario’s Algoma District at the end of Highway 651, located between Wawa and Chapleau. This was a real wilderness trip into an area that we had never ventured. We headed out in middle May to try and catch that elusive weather window—when warm air begins to blow away the gloom of winter. That brief moment, before the leaves pop open and the bugs pop out. Well, we managed to score two of the three reasons for paddling so early in spring. There sure weren’t any leaves on the trees or bugs in the air, because they declined to come out, as winter refused to give way to spring. Cold, driving rain, sleet and some actual snow greeted us, as we waited by the tracks in Missanabie for the train that would transport us to our starting point. Icy hands, dragged my light paddling jacket, closely around my shivering torso. I grimaced as nosecicles formed on my face. Grumpily I glanced at my husband and muttered, “Tell me again, why we’re doing this?” Coming this spring: Step into the WildNew Novel by P. Lynn HallidayDisaster! Rare & Aware Skateathon Another Huge Successresearch.Pompe disease is a rare genetic disorder that causes a buildup of glycogen, a type of sugar, in the body’s cells, leading to muscle weakness and other serious health issues.Although the final numbers are not in, there were several hundred people taking in the skating, sliding, children’s games, barbecue and raffle.Over the last three years, they have raised well over $150,000 to support rare disease research.Photos by Rosalind Russell and additional photos provided by Patricia Drohan,

Jesuit Father Leonard Altilia and guidance counsellor Mike Greczkowski have brought 18 boys, all teens, from the Loyola High School, a Jesuit-run Catholic school in Montreal to the Anishinabe Spiritual Centre for Experience Week. Father Altilia says the centre has been a yearly excursion which provides the teens with the opportunity learn about Indigenous teachings and history, and take part in activities like snowshoeing, hiking, building shelters, eating moose stew and more. That also includes fundamentals such as building and lighting a Sacred Fire. Next year will look a little different, he adds, with the arrival of girls since Loyola will become a coed school. He says several students are in the Dominican Republic and Costa Rica, but the Northern Ontario experience provides these students with an opportunity to taste rural living in the natural environment provided by the centre. Greczkowski adds the boys also leave their mark behind with building outdoor benches with last year’s group building picnic tables and before that, bat houses. Father Altilia says the teaching system at their school is different, with secondary school beginning in grade seven, so by the time the students get to take part in Experience Week, they have four years under their belt. He says the excursions changes and Safety Water Stream (HSWS) under the Municipal Housing Infrastructure Program (MHIP). The project is estimated at $5.7 million dollars with the province contributing $4,163,737 and the balance coming from local coffers. The money will be used to replace a major piece of the aging water system in the community of Massey.Funding Announcement To Improve Water Distribution In MasseyEspanola Councillor Declares Run For Mayorneeded. Adamo, who is 16, says he decided to come to the North because he had heard from fellow students who took part in it before that it was a life-changing experience. “I only heard good things about how that week had changed their lives, so I thought I want to take this in,” says Adamo. “Snowshoeing for example, that was a whole new experience, the quiet, the winter setting, walking across the lake in unbroken snow, just seeing the beauty of this place is so awe-inspiring. The city is so very different, Being able to enjoy the trees, the clear air, it is just so beautiful.” Fifteen-year-old Marcus says he also wanted to stay in the North to take in the opportunity to build relationships with his fellow students. “It’s an opportunity to get to know my classmates outside of the classroom. Some of them who are here, I have never talked to them before. I want to know and understand their culture, as well as the culture of the people here at the centre. It is so different, and really a good experience. I won’t forget it. It’s beautiful here, people who live here are lucky.” Despite the minus 25 temperatures, their spirits were high, and very competitive. The teens are divided into two teams; the Eagles and the Bears and compete against each other in different activities throughout the week culminating with the winning team receiving a trophy, but all making memories that will last a lifetime. Our beloved mother, Hilda Mary Jane (Sanftenberg) Hansson, passed away peacefully on February 8, 2026 at the age of 94, leaving behind a life rich with love, laughter, and unforgettable stories. Born in Walford and resided in Massey, she lived with curiosity, courage, and a sharp wit that never faded. Hilda's legacy lives on in the joy she brought, the lessons she taught, and the memories she made as a wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother and friend. She dedicated her life to caring for her family and was a pillar of strength to all who knew her. She had a passion for knitting for there was never an afghan blanket or Icelandic sweater that she did not accomplish. She found joy in the simple things—long conversations with friends, or just sitting under tne crabapple tree enjoying the sunshine. As a dedicated homemaker, her home was always filled with warmth and the aroma of freshly baked goodies. She is survived by her son's Donald & Bill Hansson (partner Connie), daughter Tina Brandow (husband Mal) , 9 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren, all who carry her laughter and love in their hearts. Predeceased my her late husband Edward Hansson, and by her son's Steve and Daryl Hansson ( wife Kelli survived). Up until the end Hilda maintained her kindness, grace, compassion, appreciation of beauty, love of family and friends, and expressed gratitude for her long life, full of joy and happiness. Upon her wishes, a burial of ashes while take place at the Walford Cemetery for family and friends in the spring. Mom, your strength, humor, and endless love will remain in ours hearts forever.EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITYCarolyn May Cosby (nee Smith) - April 13, 1943-January 27, 2026. It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved wife and mother, Carolyn May (Smith) Cosby, on January 27, 2026 at Health Sciences North, Sudbury, at the age of 82. Daughter of the late Earnest and Ella (Garbutt) Smith, Carolyn was born on April 13, 1943 at the Mindemoya Hospital. She grew up in Sheguiandah where she enjoyed many active pursuits such as swimming, baseball, figure skating, women’s hockey and broomball, along with more quiet activities like drawing, reading mystery novels, and participating in the activities of the local 4-H Homemaking Club. As a young girl she attended the S.S. #2 Howland School, in the one room schoolhouse on Townline Road, before moving on to Little Current High School for Grades 9 to 12, and then beginning Grade 13 at Espanola High School. After High School, Carolyn studied Nursing in Sudbury, later working as an RNA in hospitals first in Sudbury and then in Little Current. After leaving Nursing she worked as a secretary at the S.S. #2 Howland School, in the new building on Highway 6. On August 1, 1970 she married Thomas Wayne Cosby in a small quiet ceremony in the living room of her parents’ home, with a reception following at the Sheguiandah Hall. Carolyn and Wayne celebrated their 55th anniversary in 2025. By the time they moved to the new home that they built in Espanola in 1975, they had three children, and Carolyn chose to become a fulltime wife and mother, the latter a job at which she was particularly good, actively participating in her children’s lives and activities. She started a 4-H Homemaking Club in Espanola, helped with school projects, and attended plays and Science Fairs that involved her three children. While she was a great mom, she also made time for her own interests trying out yoga, meditation, belly dancing and bowling, where she made many new friends. Part of each summer was spent back on Manitoulin at the cottage where she enjoyed swimming, boating, and visiting with family. As her children grew up and needed less of her time she decided to go back to school part time and earned a diploma in Gerontology through correspondence. About thirty years ago, Carolyn returned to Sheguiandah to care for her aging father where she remained until her hospitalization in December. Carolyn will be truly missed by her loving husband, Wayne, her children, Angela, Dwayne (wife Abby) and Jason (friend Lee), her precious grandchildren Violet, Onyx, and Aksel, as well as her faithful feline friend, Pippin. She will be lovingly remembered by her siblings Charlie (wife Laurine) Smith, Ellwood “Pete” Smith (predeceased 1969), and Dianne Lecuyer. She will also be remembered with fondness by her nieces and nephew, Charline (Rob), Lisa (Jamie), David (Kaitlin), and Tina, as well as Wayne’s nieces and nephews, Sue (Wayne, predeceased), Janet (Bill), Linda (Brian), Judy (Mike), Russell (Erin), John (predeceased), Tom (Connie), and Betty Lynn (predeceased) (Don, wife Linda). Predeceased by her in-laws Tom and Alice (O’Brien) Cosby, her brother-in-law Jim (Anatalie) Cosby and sister-in-law Eleanor (Ross) Morphet. We would like to thank the staff at the Little Current Hospital, York Extendicare, and Health Sciences North for their care of Mom and their support for our family during the last weeks of her life. A celebration of life will be announced at a later date. Cremation services are provided by Simple Wishes of the North, Sudbury, and Crystal Crematorium.Call 705-869-6883 To Place Your Classified Ad!!
