SINGLE USE TOOLS: safe and sustainable
Product Buzz
Old habits die hard, but with the need of the hour, disposable tools in the beauty industry has taken up a speed boat.
From FnB (Food and Beverages) to medical sector, disposables have been widely used over years. Now it’s the revolution in beauty industry, where no body wants to be touched or get services using same tools that has been used multiple times on several people. But why is it the need of the hour? We definitely do not want another pandemic to happen to us or our kids. When making a choice, it is important that one be certain as to the reason for deciding on a reusable or disposable tool, and to review assumptions as time goes on.
Disposable tools are designed to be discarded after one use.
Disposable tools are thought to be cleaner, easier to keep sterile, less robust, and ultimately, more expensive. When it comes to pricing, there are several companies which are making these tools for lesser-than-imagined price and also helping us to be cautious about our environment.
When we hear the term disposable, we get tempted about hygiene but what we usually don’t think about are the after effects of disposing off the tools on the environment. With great initiative comes great ideology of sustainability. We in the industry, urge the service provider, the client and the ultimate user of disposable tools, to go for those disposable tools which are made up of natural elements and fibers. Using of environment friendly tools caters to both your services and saving up our ecosystem from another disaster. Tools made up of bamboo wood, natural carbon and plant based fibers should be given a high market playground to reach out to the people and help in the sustainability of our future.

While a lot many factors go in to determine good health especially during winter. We have listed in this article a few that can be good pointers to start with. Good health has become a priority in today's times. Read on to have a better idea of your health.
Diet : As the season is getting colder, the chances of falling sick are getting higher! People tend to focus more on the holiday planning’s and less on their own health during winters. With the falling temperature, our craving for warm foods increases and there’s nothing wrong in enjoying the winter comfort foods but, are you getting enough nutrients out of those food items to keep yourself
healthy?
With shorter days and longer nights, the motivation for exercising and eating the right food is very hard to find and this habit

weaken our immune system, making us susceptible to a lot of diseases! Do you know that if you make some changes in your diet then, you can actually stay fit and healthy during the winter season? Yes, that’s right! Food can be very powerful in preventing the winter-related illnesses from causing us trouble. Here are some diet tips which will save you from the winter sickness.
Make a date with Porridge : Start your day with a healthy slow-release breakfast, which will keep you full of energy until lunch. Warming oats are a great way to start your morning, try topping with nuts or seeds and some seasonal winter fruit like apples, pears cranberries or dates.
Choose fruit and veggies rich in vitamin C : Add foods like sweet potatoes, tomatoes, red peppers and citrus fruits to your meals as they contain vitamin C, which plays an important role in the immune system and energy levels, especially important if you regularly exercise.” Light Exercise / Yoga : Finding time to work out can be challenging any time of year, but especially in the winter. the gym, or finding a time that actually fits into the dwindling daylight hours, becomes more challenging.
With the season comes freezing temperatures, snow, darker nights, and just more clothing to lug around. The answer? Go ahead and give into your nesting instincts this winter... you can still stay fit and active! Creating a home workout routine can be just as beneficial as a gym, plus it’s stress-free, inexpensive, and customizable to whatever you need. My favourite home workout by far is yoga. By creating a home routine, you can move at your own pace, stretch how you like, and practice any of the poses you want that you might have felt uncomfortable or intimidated doing in a group setting. Plus, control over the music! All you need is a little self-motivation and you’ll have your home practice routine down in no time. Here are some tips and a great routine to get you started.
Worry this winter :
Dry Skin : Dry skin is a common condition and is often worse during the winter, when environmental humidity is low. Moisturising is essential during winter. Contrary to popular belief, moisturising lotions and creams aren't absorbed by the skin. Instead, they act as a sealant to stop the skin's natural moisture evaporating away. The best time to apply moisturiser is after a bath or shower while your skin is still moist, and again at bedtime.
Weight gain in Winter : Exercising daily may already be a struggle, and adding another obstacle in the form of cold and unruly weather can really extinguish any motivation. The tendency of the numbers on the scale to creep up isn’t helped by all the rich holiday foods and gatherings that involve large meals. To best combat weight gain, make a conscious effort to get at least 30 minutes of exercise such as an indoor spin class, or even a yoga class, to outsmart the elements—at least several times
Diva Talk, January - February 2021
per week. Also be sure to not binge on the holiday sweets that may be around; leave the cookies for Santa.
Painful Joints: Many people with arthritis say their joints become more painful and stiff in winter, though it's not clear why this is the case. There's no evidence that changes in the weather cause joint damage.
Top tip: Many people get a little depressed during the winter months, and this can make them perceive pain more acutely. Everything feels worse, including medical conditions. Daily exercise can boost a person's mental and physical state. Swimming is ideal as it's easy on the joints.
Heart Attacks : Heart attacks are more common in winter. This may be because cold weather increases blood pressure and puts more strain on the heart. Your heart also has to work harder to maintain body heat when it's cold.

PRIMER STORY
In the past recent years, innovation in cosmetics has taken place. More and more makeup items are being formulated and studied on to meet the growing needs of customers. One of those inventive products is the makeup primer. Manufacturers have conceptualized a primer for eyes, face, lash and even for lips. Here is a detailed description of these primers and the reasons they have become essential in one’s makeup routine.
Words By
Divya Sharma Dahiya
As a professional make-up artist, if you haven’t been using makeup primer, then you’re really missing out and not delivering the best makeovers to your clients. Whether it is an minimal (no makeup) makeover look or a full on bridal makeover, skin prep is the most important part of the makeup. Furthermore, Primer is the most important part of the skin prep.
Yet, many professionals often skip this step because they believe they don’t really need it, are unsure of how to use it or don’t think it’s worth the investment. However, using primer underneath your makeup will make everything last longer, whether that’s on your client’s skin or in your vanity bag. We at Diva Talk, spoke to many Beauty experts to get you the best information and everything you need to know about the Primer.
What is the purpose of makeup primer?
Makeup primer is a base for foundation

Feature
Your Complete Beauty & Salon Guide - Diva Talk
or face makeup that allows it to go on smoother and last longer.
To make your makeup look 1000 percent better. Really, it’s that simple. Makeup primers are a gel, cream, or liquid formula that, when smoothed over your skin, fill in your tiny creases, large pores, flaky patches, and bumpy textures, creating nothing’ but a smooth surface for your makeup to glide over, which means your concealer or, say, foundation, won’t stick to the dry patches, or settle into the creases, or cake up around the acne scabs.
Makeup primer basically blurs, hides, and evens out your client’s skin texture. And because your makeup isn’t competing with roughness and oil slicks, it adheres to the face for hours longer than it usually would, even in super-humid, sweaty temps. Formulas are available in cream, gel and powder. While moisturizer softens skin, primer prepares skin for your favourite tinted moisturizer or foundation, giving it something to hold onto so it lasts throughout the day. Many makeup primers are formulated with silicone-based polymers, like dimethicone, because of their ultra- smoothing effects. But if you have clients that struggle with cystic acne and other skin conditions, do a patch test or check with a medical professional, as some people report allergic reactions to dimethicone.
Makeup primers can also help smooth any fine lines, wrinkles or large pores.
Do you need makeup primer?
When it comes to makeup, you don’t need anything. You can use (or not use) whatever that you wish that makes you and your client happy. But if your client
is someone who ends up with raccoon eyes, smudged eyeliner, crease-y, slide-y, patch-y foundation/eyeshadow/ concealer/etc. by the end of the day, you and your canvas would most likely benefit from trying a makeup primer.
The look can be great even without a primer, but it will take much longer to achieve and not give you that flawless photo finish every bride desires. Using a good primer on the other hand will help you not only achieve the flawless skin finish but also in a much lesser time with a lot of ease.
What makeup primer should you choose?
When it comes to creating a beautiful, long-lasting makeup look, the first step might be the most important. Applying a makeup primer gives your makeup a smooth, even base to stick to, helping it stay smudge-free and flawless all day. Just like makeup, however, there is a large market for primers. Choose your makeup primer based on skin type, any skin issues your clients may have, and the environment in which they’ll be wearing your makeup.
Here’s the thing about makeup primers: They’re available in a ton of different forms, just in case you feel like priming your client’s face, consider how much is needed and where. If the look is very minimalistic you might just go with treating spots specific to needs. You’ve got your lip primers (to help keep the lipstick smooth and long-lasting), eyelash primers (to prevent clumps and lengthen lashes), your eyeshadow primers (to prevent creasing, fading, and smudging), and your face primers,

which we will be focusing on today. Face primers are also not created equal— you can get hydrating primers for dry skin, mattifying primers for oily skin, color-correcting primers for redness, and approximately 20 other types, finishes, and consistencies. But, really, all makeup primers boil down to two important, distinct categories: silicone- based or water-based formulas. And that, my friends, is where dreams are made and broken.
Silicone-based primer vs. water- based primer:
Yes, this is incredibly important, so read on. Silicone primers give
the face a super smooth, silky, soft feeling, which allows your makeup to glide over the skin without sinking into pores and creases. Silicones also form a protective little shield over the skin, trapping in moisture to keep skin hydrated and protected. You’ll know you’ve got a silicone primer if one of the first five ingredients ends in -cone or -siloxane (like dimethicone, polysilicone, trisiloxane, cyclopentasiloxane, etc.). It’s not an exact science, but if -cones or -siloxanes aren’t present, you’ve probably got a water-based primer.
Water-based primers are essentially lightweight moisturizers that make the skin feel, slightly moisturized and more. However, We don’t think they do anything special for your makeup, especially if your client is already wearing a good moisturizer, and they offer none of the same skin-smoothing properties as a silicone primer.
That’s not to say silicone-based primers are the end all be all solution. Some people hate the feeling of silicones or
swear silicones break them out and just prefer the finish they get with a water-based primer. And to that,we say experiment! Play around!
What is the best makeup primer?
I think as long as it’s a simple, silicone- based primer, you can’t really go wrong. But, of course, it all depends on your client’s skin type and texture, which means you may end up trying a few before you fall in love. However certain other factor can also be the thresh point of your decision on which primer to use.
According to Skin Type
Choose a hydrating makeup primer if your client has dry skin. If
the skin begs for lotion after a shower, you definitely need to get a makeup primer for dry skin. A good, nourishing primer can take the place of lotion, so you can hydrate the skin and prep it for makeup in one step. Look for primers with words like “hydrating,” “soothing,” or “replenishing”.
Pick a mattifying primer if you get oily skin. If your clients struggle with excess oil and shine, you want to combat this with your primer. To do so, your best bet is a great mattifying primer that will reduce her skin’s oil production. Products that minimize pores typically help to minimize shine as well. Look for oil-free formulas.
Select a simple primer for sensitive skin. If you've found that your client’s skin is sensitive to the products you use, it's a good idea to choose primers with a short ingredient list. Many beauty supply stores will have primers for sensitive

Feature
Your Complete Beauty & Salon Guide - Diva Talk
skin that are oil-free, fragrance-free, paraben-free, and so on. The less additives in the facial products, the lower chance you have to experience a negative reaction.
Use a nourishing makeup primer on mature skin. As one ages, one may struggle with fine lines and blotchy skin. For this type of skin, look for makeup primers infused with antioxidants. A hydrating primer will help to give your client’s skin some needed moisture while locking your makeup in place.
Addressing Specific Skin Issues
Use a color-correcting primer if you have issues with skin color. Some primers are clear, which are great for people hoping to improve skin texture and help makeup stay put. If you have clients with blotchy or uneven skin, however, you might want to use your primer as a color corrector. You can choose a primer in the same color as the foundation color to even out the skin, or use a specific color- correcting primer.
Choose a gentle primer for acne-
prone skin. Using the wrong products on acne can make the problem worse, so it’s incredibly important that people with acne choose the right makeup primer. Primers with salicylic acid are great for people with acne because they actually work to reduce acne while they are wearing it. Avoid products with added oils or fragrances, because these can irritate the skin. Look for products that are specifically labelled "non- comedogenic," which means they won't clog the pores.
Hide large pores and fine lines with a pore-minimizing primer. These
products are well-labelled for the problem they address, luckily. If you want to blur these imperfections, look for bottles labelled with words like “pore-minimizing” or “pore less.” Some of these primers can be used alone while others work best in conjunction with foundations, so read the packaging carefully.
• If you have to cover wrinkles or large pores, it’s important to see if your primer stands the test of time. A primer may look great at first, but then you’ll see

the foundation settling into fine lines. The best primers will hold your makeup in place (and out of fine lines) all day!
Priming for the Environment
Buy a sweat-resistant primer if your client is active. If they are sitting in class or work all day, you may be fine with the everyday primer. However, if they are headed to a packed party or to an outdoor lunch, your makeup may slide off their face by the end! Use a sweat-resistant primer to make sure it stays put. These primers are meant to resist water and sweat and will help the makeup stay in place despite the conditions.
Get an eyelid primer to hold eyeshadow in place. Skin on eyes is sensitive and it is not easy to put on make-up around the area. It requires a steady hand. Primers are used on this area to accomplish expressive and exquisite eye look. Eyeshadow tends to furrow and make the eyelids look less wrinkly. The best thing about eye primers is that they can be used solo or to support an eyeshadow application. The primer itself can already do wonders to the eye look. Use primers to boost the shade of the eyeshadow. Use it, too, if you want to maximize the staying power of the eyeshadow. These will prevent your client’s eyeshadows from creasing or fading, helping the eyelid artwork last all day and night.
Use a primer with SPF in the summer. If you want your client’s skin to look beautiful, you need to protect it from the sun. A makeup primer with SPF is great year-round, but especially during the summer months. The higher
the SPF the better! For added protection on really sunny days, skip the primer and use sunscreen underneath the makeup.
How do you apply primer?
Careful, this answer is almost too simple: Just, smooth it over the skin before applying makeup. That’s it. It’s hard to mess up, but there are some best practice rules we have compiled below:
1.Primer works best on clean, freshly moisturized skin (although wait at least five minutes for the moisturizer to sink in before applying it.
2.Use only a thin layer of primer (usually a pea-size blob for the entire face)—glob on too much, and the makeup can end up sliding around instead of melting into the skin.
3.Wait a full 60 seconds for your primer to “set” before slathering on the concealer and foundation.
But also, know that there really aren’t any hard rules for primer.
Using your fingertips to apply makeup primer allows you to really work the product into the skin.
It’s best to apply primer with fingertips for areas larger than a quarter. If only using for small areas, a brush is recommended. Even a concealer or lip brush works good. This spot-treat technique gives the look of a more natural finish.
Taking this routine a step further, consider the process as an exercise for the face. Massaging primer onto skin with fingertips helps to get the blood flowing underneath. DT

The Power of
ACTIVATED CHARCOAL
-34-
Diva Talk, January - February 2021
The latest skin trend is the black face mask trending everywhere. Diva Talk Research team brings to you a know it all on the Black Magic portion, The Activated Charcoal.
Words By Rashmi Bhardwaj
Activated charcoal is an inexpensive beauty miracle that can easily reverse skin damage to give your skin a healthy and natural glow. Also, it can be taken internally to detox your body, improve digestion, and more. Before we dive into the many beauty benefits of activated charcoal, let’s understand what it really is and how it works.
Though you may not immediately associate charcoal with healthy skin or
skin-care products, activated charcoal boasts beauty benefits for skin by drawing oil, dirt and other harmful substances from clogged pores due to its adsorption powers. Since it is not absorbed by the skin, activated charcoal’s highly absorbent pores can deep clean the skin, drawing dirt, sebum, and bacteria out of the pores. It is this quality that makes activated charcoal a prominent ingredient in detoxifying face masks and other beauty remedies.
What is activated charcoal?
Charcoal is made from coal, wood, or other substances. It becomes “activated charcoal” when high temperatures are combined with an activating agent to expand its surface area. As it burns hotter, charcoal is considered superior to wood, and so, historically, it became the fuel utilized to smelt ores, with its earliest recorded use dating all the way

Feature
back to 3750 BC.
Although it sounds like something you’d use to fire up the barbecue, activated charcoal is the latest ‘detox’ trend. It’s typically made from carbon-containing material, like wood, that is heated at high temperatures to create charcoal, then oxidised – a process known as “activation”.
Activated charcoal has lots of small holes in its surface, increasing its surface area and making it more porous. It’s this sponge-like property that allows activated charcoal to soak up a variety of chemicals and it’s why you may see it used in filtration products, including water filters. A relatively unknown (although certainly growing in popularity) substance, activated charcoal is a natural living lovers dream. With health and beauty benefits, as well as a number of uses in the home, it’s something that every family should have.
What Does Charcoal Do for Skin?
Activated charcoal draws bacteria, poisons, chemicals, dirt and other micro- particles to the surface of skin, helping you to achieve a flawless complexion and fight acne. Charcoal is not metabolized, or absorbed by the body, but it can be used to treat some poisonous bites and disinfect some wounds. Activated charcoal powder is proven to absorb thousands of times its own mass in harmful substances, which makes it a popular ingredient in facial masks.
Make pores smaller and cleaner
Throughout the day, toxins from the world around us clog our pores. When
the pores are not clear, neither is the complexion. Activated charcoal, when used in a face mask, binds to and helps pull the dirt out of the pores, making them less visible because it’s the oil and dirt that makes them appear bigger. This leaves the face feeling fresh. We suggest to use it with an exfoliating scrub to get the dead skin off and experience an even deeper clean.
Take care of oily skin
For oily skin, activated charcoal may be just the ingredient you need to balance things out. Used in a cleanser or mask, activated charcoal can pull the unwanted excess oils from the skin, leaving it smooth. We suggest doing this sparingly, once or twice per week at the most, So that you don’t over-dry the skin. If you already have a client with dry skin, best to steer clear of it for this use, as you don’t want to dry it out even more.
Treat acne
Depending on the specifics of your client’s acne, how severe it is, what’s causing it, activated charcoal may be able to help. In soap form, it’s slightly gritty, which might provide just the gentle exfoliating the skin needs. It will also absorb oils and toxins on and below the skin. You can use it as a spot treatment if you don’t want to use it on the whole face, just think of it as a mini mask for the blemishes.
Deep clean your skin
Send all the chemical-ridden deep- cleaners on a little vacation. You can find cleansers that contain activated charcoal in bars or bottles. It ’s important that

you suggest your client’s not to use these daily, as you don’t want to soak up the healthy oils and moisture your client’s skin needs. It is suggested to check out the other ingredients if your clients are buying a liquid cleanser over the counter, some are designed to neutralize the acidity in the skin, others have deodorizing properties, some can even double as shaving cream. Buy the product that best suits the personal combination of needs and follow the directions on the bottle.
Soothe and heal bites, cuts and skin irritations
Whether you were stung by a bee or had a cut from the kitchen that’s wound up infected, activated charcoal can help speed the healing and relieve the symptoms. For minor skin ailments, including insect bites, stings, cuts, scrapes and minor infections, activated charcoal can be applied topically. The activated charcoal, when applied as a paste, helps absorb venom and infection. It will also bring down swelling and lessen pain. To make the paste: slowly add water to a bit of activated charcoal powder and mix until it is a spreadable consistency.
Rid your hair of toxins
Activated charcoal, when used on hair, can pull out oil, dirt and toxins, just like it does for the skin. You can find regular and dry shampoos that contain activated charcoal. However, try a test patch before using it on the entire hair at once. If you want to try activated charcoal on the hair, but aren’t sure you want to buy a bottle of a pre-made product just yet, you can make your own as you go. Just empty a capsule, or add a teaspoon of activated charcoal to your regular shampoo and use as you normally would. The only thing you may need to switch up would be adding an extra rinse to the routine to get the colour fully out. The advantage to buying activated charcoal in powder or tablets is that it’s multi- purpose.
Add volume to hair
When the hair feels weighted down it’s usually not only a feeling. If your client is carrying around enough dirt, the hair will start to sag and regular shampooing may not be getting it all out. Regular shampoos remove surface dirt, but activated charcoal will pull out even more. The other difference, and this is big, is that activated charcoal isn’t going to leave the residue regular shampoos will, so your client’s hair will feel lighter and have more volume.
Remedy scalp conditions
Dandruff, redness, oily and itchy scalps may be relieved with activated charcoal. You can use it as a scalp treatment before you shampoo or can be mixed in with the shampoo. The activated charcoal will work on the scalp the way it does on your skin and hair, pulling out toxins and purifying. It’s unclear how deep into the hair follicle is being cleaned, but the results should be noticeable. DT
