DRUG ADMINISTRATION

• Drug administration is the path by which a
drug is taken into the body. It is the process of
giving medication to the patient in order to
prevent disease or complication.

ROUTE OF DRUG ADMINISTRATION

• Routes of administration are generally
classified by the location at which the
substance is applied. Common examples
include local, oral & intravenous
administration.

ROUTE EXPLANATION
Held inside the cheek
buccal delivered directly into the stomach or
intestine (with a G-tube or J-tube)
enteral
breathed in through a tube or mask
inhalable
injected into a vein with an IV line and
infused slowly dripped in over time

intramuscular injected into muscle with a syringe
intrathecal
intravenous injected into your spine
nasal
injected into a vein or into an IV line
ophthalmic
given into the nose by spray or pump

given into the eye by drops, gel, or
ointment

ROUTE EXPLANATION

oral swallowed by mouth as a tablet, capsule,
lozenge, or liquid
otic given by drops into the ear
rectal inserted into the rectum
subcutaneous injected just under the skin
sublingual held under the tongue
topical applied to the skin
transdermal given through a patch placed on the skin

OCULAR ROUTE OF DRUG
ADMINISTRATION

• Ocular medicines can e delivered by four
methods:
1. Topical instillation
2. Periocular injection
3. Intraocular Injection
4. Systemic administration

1. Topical Instillation
Drugs can be administered topically in the form of eye
drops, ointments, gels etc.

2. Periocular Injection
These include subconjuctival, subtenon, retrobulbar &
peribulbar injections.

3. Intraocular Injections
To deliver drugs in maximum concetration at the
target tissue.
Intracameral ( Into Anterior Chamber)
Intravitreal ( Into Vitreous Cavity)

4. Systemic Administration
Include oral intake, intra muscular & intra venous
injection.
