Hello Colonies

Hey reader, here are some things you need to know but first let's go back 400 years
ago. First picture this, Henry Hudson sailed down the Hudson river and met the
Native Americans to trade fur. Imagine this, people came to America from different
countries to start colonies. England made its first colony in Virginia. Did you know
there were 13 original colonies? These were split into three sections: New England’
s colonies(north), Middle colonies and southern colonies. It was a rough trip to get
America, but once people got there, they had to get started working or they would
not be able to eat. There were many people who died from starvation. After a while
they started to learn how to survive.

Hello Colonies

The colonies were founded by Henry Hudson. Settlers came from
Europe . They started colonies.

Time to Start a Town

For example, once the colonists got used to living in this New World they started
building houses and shops, they had started trading with Native and with each
other. For example, tobacco, cotton were common trades. More importantly there
were also many shops like the blacksmith and other shops. People felt comfortable
starting businesses and buying land to use for farms and building houses. Jails were
also created. Most people would build there houses near the ocean so they could get
fur and mail the merchandise that the ships brought, location made it much be
easier.

Colonial Houses

Imagine this, houses were very different. People who were rich had really big
houses and less fortunate families had tiny houses with more people inside. There
was one fireplace in a small house but the rich had a fireplace in each room. The
toilets were not inside, if you had to go to the bathroom in the night you would use a
chamber pot or a necessary.Houses were made out of wood or brick and all houses
had brick chimney’s

If the colonist need to wash they were not able turn on the shower because there
was no running water. That means no sinks, so if you were dirty and wanted to
clean your hands you would go get some water from the well. If you were a regular
family you wouldn't have your own bed. Rich had beautiful pieces of furniture.

Time For Work

I woke up, my sister and I said “it's time for chores let's get a early start’’. I woke
up put my necklace on, and my Mom told me to churn the butter. Take this for a
example, When I was making the butter and i wasn't happy my sister told me to
face the music. Mom said to get to school but first get the eggs post haste. After
school, Mom told me to help her with cooking. My brother always says I got the
most crops and the most fish. After we set the table Mother told us to get our plates.
Today, we had apple pancakes. Picture this, after dinner mom told us to hit the hay
after we wash the dishes.

Time For School Here is a child getting
punished in colonial times
Imagine that, going to school was very
different in colonial times. The only similarity
was they did most of the same subjects. Boys
were allowed to go to school longer than girls.
Girls stayed at home and learned how to cook
and clean and sew. When you went to school
you would have to bring wood if you didn't
you would have to sit far away from the fire.
School was not free, they had to pay the
teacher by giving them food or money.

Time For School

What about punishment? In other words some of the punishment were very cruel
and and awful. If you bite your nails they put something on your nails that said nail
biting baby and people would see it . There is even more... if you talked when the
teacher was talking you would have to have a dunce cap on your head and have
your hands tied behind your back. If you were really bad you would get a whipping
.

Schools were also different and teachers had different roles. Sometimes, teachers
came to your house and went in a small room with children of all ages. The oldest
sat in the back and the youngest sat in the front because the little children wouldn't
be able to see the board or the teacher.

In fact, even though the teachers This is a picture of what school looked like back in

very noisy and loud because
everybody was doing different
things. Students may have been
scared of school because they had to
read their writing. Imagine,
attending school was like an honor
and a privilege. It would be like a
break from all the chores they had
to do.

Time for Layers and Layers of Clothes

Boys and girls wore different kinds of clothes. http://www.williamsburgkids.

Let me tell you what girls wore. Girls wore

many layers of clothing. In fact, little girls

would wear things that her mother wore and

the clothing was very uncomfortable. Richer

girls would wear fancier clothes than other

average families that didn't have as much

money. Rich girls clothes would get fancy

clothes from Europe. Most girls would wear

clothes that they made from their cloth. All girls

wore underwear which was layers of clothes

that you put under your dress. There was also

stays, which were made out whale bone that

made it hard to bend over and play. This is a women a beautiful dress it
is a very fancy dress.

Boys Wore Fancy Clothing, Too!

Rich men wore fancy clothes from

Europe . Invision this, if you

were rich little boy you would

start wearing things like you

father .Imagine, being 6 or

younger and wear dress with

stays. All boys wore tights under

their breeches. Farm workers

would wear shirts with no selves. https://www.history.org/history/clothing/men/anatomymen.cfm

Goodbye Colonial Times http://mrnussbaum.com/american-revolution/

This is a colonial flag. Ok !Back in colonial times king George
was in charge of the colonies and he
was leaving in England. In fact, king
George started to tax colonists, and
they were mad that they didn’t have a
say in government. After the colonists
fought a war called the war of
independence , and they won. They
made their own country and they
created a constitution. They named
this country, the USA.
