3 MUFFLE FURNACE

A muffle furnace, also known as chamber or box furnace, provides the user with a cuboidal hot zone,
having the depth of the hot zone generally longer than the height and the width. The hot zone is
heated using either metallic, Silicon Carbide or Molybdenum Disilicide heating elements.
The hot zone is insulated by multiple layers of low thermal mass vacuum formed ceramic fibre boards
of a grade commensurate with the maximum furnace operating temperature. The vacuum formed fibre
boards together along with furnace duel body construction having forced air circulation between the
outer and inner body ensures outer skin temperature below 60° C at the maximum furnace operating
temperature. The hot zone generally has a refractory insulated swivel aside door. The door design
ensures almost no heat loss from the door during operation and ensures that hot refractory is always
facing away from user. The furnaces are equipped with thyristor powered by automatic PID
programmable temperature controllers ensuring control accuracy of +/- 1° C. The outer bodies are
duly powder coated for good appearance and longer life. These furnaces have a temperature
uniformity of +/- 3° C throughout the hot zone.
The maximum operating temperature of these furnaces range from 600°C to 1800°C.

5 SIMPLE TUBE FURNACE

The tube furnace provides the user with a cylindrical, gas tight atmosphere controlled hot zone.
The sole purpose of using a tube furnace is to have heating in a controlled atmosphere or in vacuum.
As the name suggests, the tube furnace houses a work tube made of either Alumina or Quartz
depending on the temperature of operation. The work tube is equipped with gas tight stainless steel
flanges on both ends for gas purging and vacuum applications.
The hot zone in a tube furnace is located at the centre of the work tube, having a length of either 200,
250 or 300 mm along the length of the tube and diameter same as the inner diameter of the work tube.

The hot zone is heated using either metallic, Silicon Carbide or Molybdenum Disilicide heating
elements. The hot zone is insulated by multiple layers of low thermal mass vacuum formed ceramic
fibre boards of a grade commensurate with the maximum furnace operating temperature. The vacuum
formed fibre boards together along with furnace duel body construction having forced air circulation
between the outer and inner body ensures outer skin temperature below 60° C at the maximum
furnace operating temperature. The furnaces are equipped with thyristor powered by automatic
programmable PID controllers ensuring control accuracy of +/- 1° C. The outer bodies of the furnaces
are duly powder coated for good appearance and longer life. In Single zone furnaces, distribution of
temperature follows a plateau curve inside hot zone. The distribution of temperature may improve with
the use of radiation shields, increasing the length of the plateau in the curve. Temperature at end of
hot zone is generally 15-20° C less than at centre of hot zone.
The length of uniform hot zone where temperature is +/- 5° C from temperature shown in
thermocouple is less than total hot zone length and is a function of hot zone diameter and total length.
The maximum operating temperature of these furnaces range from 600° C to 1700° C.
Tube furnaces can be customized as per user requirement.

7 SPLIT TUBE FURNACE

Split tube furnaces, both vertical and horizontal, are suitable where the experiments demand changing
of the work tube between jobs. Split tube furnaces are also used where the furnace has to be wrapped
around a sample, for example as in Tensile Test Rigs.
Split tube furnaces offer the same features as that of a simple tube furnace. The split tube furnace
also allows heating in a controlled atmosphere or in vacuum. The furnace houses a work tube made
of either Alumina or Quartz depending on the temperature of operation. The work tube is equipped
with gas tight stainless steel flanges on both ends for gas purging and vacuum applications.
The hot zone in a tube furnace is located at the centre of the work tube, having a length of either 200,
250 or 300 mm along the length of the tube and diameter same as the inner diameter of the work tube.

The horizontal split tube furnaces can have a maximum operating temperature of up to 1400° C. The
vertical split tube furnace can have operating temperature of 1600 C. The hot zone is heated using
either metallic or Silicon Carbide or heating elements. The hot zone is insulated by multiple layers of

9 MULTI ZONE/SPLIT TUBE FURNACE

A multizone tube furnace is used when the requirement of the length of uniform hot zone is more than
what can be obtained in a single hot zone tube furnace. It can also be used when the experiment
requires multiple hot zones in a single hot zone tube. To achieve this, two or three hot zones of
standard length are juxtaposed to have a lengthier hot zone and thus a lengthier uniform temperature
zone or two or more hot zones are placed some distance apart from one another. in such furnaces the
heating zone can be continuous or there can be no “no heater zones” in between hot zones.
In this kind of furnace a uniform hot zone of +/- 0.5° C can be obtained over length as high as few
meters.

A multizone furnace is also used when the user needs to maintain more than one different
temperatures in more than one hot zones. The heating zones are separated by “no heater zones”.

In both cases, the heating zones can be controlled independently using independent control systems
or a master zone can control other hot zones as slave zones..

Like a simple tube furnace, the hot zone can have controlled atmosphere or in vacuum. As the name
suggests, the multizone tube furnace houses a work tube made of either Alumina or Quartz depending
on the temperature of operation. The work tube is equipped with gas tight stainless steel flanges on
both ends for gas purging and vacuum applications.

The hot zones are heated using either metallic, Silicon Carbide or Molybdenum Disilicide heating
elements. The hot zone is insulated by multiple layers of low thermal mass vacuum formed ceramic
fibre boards of a grade commensurate with the maximum furnace operating temperature. The vacuum
formed fibre boards together along with furnace duel body construction having forced air circulation
between the outer and inner body ensures outer skin temperature below 60 C at the maximum furnace
operating temperature. The furnaces are equipped using thyristor powered by automatic
programmable PID controllers ensuring control accuracy of +/- 1° C. The outer bodies of the furnaces
are duly powder coated for good appearance and longer life. In Single zone furnaces, distribution of
temperature follows a plateau curve inside hot zone. The distribution of temperature may improve with
the use of radiation shields, increasing the length of the plateau in the curve. Temperature at end of
hot zone is generally 15-20° C less than at centre of hot zone.

The maximum operating temperature of these furnaces range from 600° C to 1600° C.

Multi Zone Tube furnaces can be customized as per user requirement.

11 MUFFLE CUM TUBE FURNACE

A muffle cum tube furnace can be used both as a muffle furnace and tube furnace. A muffle furnace is
converted into a tube furnace by inserting an one end closed tube through circular ports in the door
and it rests on the rear wall of a muffle furnace. Stainless Steel flanges can be attached at one end of
the tube for gas purging and vacuum applications. The ports are closed using refractory blocks while
the furnace is not being used as a tube furnace.
The hot zone is heated using metallic heating elements. The hot zone is insulated by multiple layers of
low thermal mass vacuum formed ceramic fibre boards of a grade commensurate with the furnace
operating temperature. The vacuum formed fibre boards together along with furnace dual body
construction having forced air circulation between the outer and inner body ensures outer skin
temperature below 60° C at the maximum furnace operating temperature. The hot zone generally has
a refractory insulated swivel aside door. The door design ensures almost no heat loss from the door
during operation. The furnaces are equipped using thyristor powered by automatic programmable PID
controllers ensuring control accuracy of +/- 1° C. The outer bodies are duly powder coated for good
appearance and longer life. These furnaces have a temperature uniformity of +/- 3 C throughout the
hot zone.
The maximum operating temperature of these furnaces range from 600° C to 1600° C.

13 RAISING HEARTH FURNACE

A raising hearth furnace allows the base or the hearth to be lowered and raised at an
elevated temperature using an automatic arrangement to place or remove samples
thus saving the user from heat or the hot heating elements, which are fragile, from air
and save them from thermal shock failure when they come in contact with air.
A raising hearth furnace provides the user with a cuboidal or cylindrical hot zone
wherein the height of the furnace is greater than the dimensions of its base. As only
the base is movable, the furnace allows heating from all four sides or six sides in

19 SMART INDUCTION FURNACE FROM TREELAB

(WORLD’S SMALLEST & MOST EFFICIENT INDUCTION FURNACE)

Melt-IT is a class of clean bottom-pouring metal melting furnaces that are very energy efficient in their
operation. Developed by TREELabs, it is being deployed and used by various research and academic
institutions.

Melt-IT-500 is the ideal tool for creating desktop foundries. Not requiring any special and heavy duty
electrical connection, it can be connected to normal 230V/5A mains socket only. In principle, Melt-IT can
be made to work with relatively small alternate energy sources, say using solar panels. This level of
energy-frugal operation is unprecedented in foundry practices.

When scaled up, the technology of Melt-IT furnaces
can bring about significant reduction in energy
consumption in conventional foundries. At present
conventional foundries are literally guzzlers of
electricity. We hope to make a big difference in this
sector, and bring about radical changes in many
other related sector. Energy is the true currency of
modern economy. The more we can save, the more
we can gain in the longer run. And of course we
make a greener planet.

Experts from around the world express their surprise
at the performance of Melt-IT and related inventions
at TREELabs (www.treelabs.org).
