Non-Slip Safety Flooring
Cleaning Guide

A guide to cleaning non-slip safety flooring. This flooring comes in a variety
of different formats, but they have one common problem - they are difficult
to clean. This guide explains how to tackle the problem.

www.adswsupplies.com

Introduction

Non-Slip flooring comes in many different forms, but it has one thing in common: they are all hopelessly
difficult to clean (at least before you have read this guide!). With the increased awareness and emphasis on
health and safety, this flooring is becoming more popular. It is very rare for commercial environments to in-
stall vinyl or wooden floors which are polished, and older floors are being replaced in favour of these floors.
Non-slip flooring normally has a slip resistant top layer, which means that there is more friction with foot
traffic etc. and can very quickly build up dirt. This guide covers cleaning methods and equipment which we
have tried and tested on real floors and proved to be successful.
This Guide Includes
• The different types of non-slip flooring
• How to identify non-slip flooring
• How to clean safety flooring using different methods
• Deep Cleaning
• Maintaintence Cleaning
• Cleaning ‘easy clean edges’
Specialists in the cleaning market, we’re unbiased about which brand we promote.

Different Types of Safety Flooring and How to Identify it

There are many different types of safety non-slip flooring. Most typically it is a flat vinyl looking floor that
has welded seams, and has curved ‘easy-clean’ edges. Other types include studded rubber sheet, wood
effect sheets or planks and tiles. If you are unsure whether a floor is non-slip, try these 2 tests:
• Use your thumbnail to push the surface of the floor covering. Non-slip flooring has a small amount of

give under pressure, whereas standard vinyl flooring has a hard finish. This wont work on tiled floors.
• Put a small ammount of water on the floor and skid your shoe over it, with non-slip flooring you will feel

noticeably more resistance.
Sheet Flooring
This is by far the most common type for most commercial buildings in washrooms,
classrooms, corridors etc. Often it has a fleck in it, sometimes with a glitter
appearance.
Typically these floors have easy-clean edges where the floor goes up the floor and
is welded at the joins.

Wood Effect Flooring
A smarter appearance, this type of safety flooring has a ‘grain-effect’ meaning
it has small grooves running down the floor. Generally it is supplied in planks or
sheets. Often used in receptions, halls or corridors where a smarter appearance is
required.

Rubber Studded Flooring
A rubber floor with large studs about the size of a 2p piece, these are generally
found in very wet areas like changing rooms and shower areas.
A soft top and large studs make it very slip resistant.

Tiled Flooring
Non-slip flooring is found often in car garage workshops, reception areas, beside
swimming pools and in prestigious showrooms and reception areas, as well as
showers and washrooms.

Why Non-Slip Safety Flooring is So Difficult to Clean

The top layer of this type of flooring is soft and slightly uneven; this is how it achieves the slip rating. The
problem with this is:

• It picks up a lot of marks because the friction it creates is so high it can melt a thin layer of a shoe rubber
and can be very hard to remove.

• Because of the uneven surface conventional mops tend to clean the peaks but miss the troughs and dirt
builds up over time in these troughs giving the floor a dirty appearance.

• Because many of these types of floors are slightly sponge like some stains get into the floor and can be
almost impossible to get out.
What Can Stain Non-Slip Safety Flooring?

• Ink
Ink including biro pens especially can
stain especially when they have been
stamped into the floor.

• Urine
Everyone’s seen the marks underneath
urinals like the picture shown above.
They look unsightly, but unfortunetly
they are almost always stained.

• Tar
You may be surprised to see this on
the list, but when tarmac gets hot and
melts and gets tracked on people feets
and stains the floor.

• Plus many other things!

Suitable Cleaning Methods

There are a few different ways of cleaning safety flooring, some of which are quicker and more efficient than
others.
Mopping- You can clean safety flooring effectively with a mop and bucket, but you will always get a better
result by using a microfibre flat mop, or a double bucket; or ideally both.
Using Contact Time and Agitation Manually- A more laborious process, but one that you can effectively use
to deep clean safety flooring is to mop on a solution, allow contact time, agitate with a deck scrub or edging
tool and collect the dirty solution.
Machine - Using a machine will make the job quicker, easier and more manageable to maintain. There are a
variety of different machines depending on the application.

Think of cleaning like a pie. The pie represents a cleaning task. The size of the pie doesn’t change, but the
size and number of slices can vary. If you cut one massive slice, there will be less pie for the other slices. E.g.
if you cut a big slice of Contact Time, you will need less scrubbing and a weaker chemical solution.
Chemical Strength- Generally the stronger the solution the more effective
Mechanical Action- Mechanical action like scrubbing will reduce the other elements
Temperature- As temperature increases then everything speeds up and becomes more active
Contact Time- The secret weapon in cleaning- leaving a solution on the surface to do the work for you

Chemicals: The Correct Dilution

Dilution is everything when it comes to cleaning non-slip safety flooring.
Why Stronger Isn’t Better
It seems human instinct makes us think that making a solution stronger will make it more effective. This is
wrong- it will make it less effective because the residue it leaves on the floor after use will mean dirt builds
up quicker compounding the issue, and it can leave the floor more slippery.
If you suspect this is what has been happening clean the floor for a couple of days just with plain water. If
you want to prove that this is the case, just put some plain water on the floor and scrub it with a nail brush, if
the water lathers up, you know there is chemical residue on the floor.
How to Get Dilution Right
For achieving the correct dilution you need dosing pumps for 5 Litre containers preferably with a dosing
chart (as pictured) for the cleaners on the wall showing clearly the number of pumps per 5L or 10L of water
or you could us other forms of dilution control including the popular containers with concentrated chemicals
with built-in dosing chambers. Even using the Easy Dose system it is essential to have clear charts indicating
how many doses to use in 5 and 10 litre buckets.

Use Dosing Charts
Dosing Charts like the one pictured here are a
great way of constantly reminding the
operatives the correct dilution in the cleaning
cupboard. They also show the cleaners which
products should be used in each area.

Use Dosing Pumps
If your cleaning guys are still glugging chemical into their
buckets then you need to get the 5L bottles equiped with
dosing pumps.
On the dosing chart and on the front of the 5L bottles it
should show you how many pumps should be shown for each
product.
Use Easy Dose
Instead of measuring with a dosing pump, you can now get
chemical in a dosing bottle with a measure. This is a more
concentrated chemical and one dose is enough for a trigger
spray or small mop bucket. A larger kentucky style mop buck-
et will require 2 pumps. This is a great way of ensuring that
dilution is correct.

Chemicals: The Correct Products

The chemicals that work the best on safety flooring are alkaline chemicals.
Here’s a selection of products for use with mop buckets and some which are scrubber drier safe. It is
important to use a low foaming product in a scrubber drier to ensure that the foam in the dirty water tank
doesnt go into the vacuum motor.

Windmill Captain
For daily cleaning, Captain is a great option for daily cleaning of safety flooring.
Available in both 5 Litre and dosing bottle as well as with spray printed trigger
spray bottles, it is very easy to ensure the dilution is correct.

Windmill Wrestler

Wrestler is a powerful alkaline hard surface cleaner with a pH of 13.5, and
contains solvents.
This is a great product for very high traffic areas, and for
maintenace deep cleaning. The dirt will simply lift the dirt from the floor.

06-584 Windmill Wrestler 5L £7.99

Windmill Easy Dose Ultimate

A powerful low-foaming detergent for use in mop buckets and scrubber driers, this
is in the popular Easy Dose range for making it very easy

07-ED55 Windmill Easy Dose Ultimate 1L £5.95

Mopping: What Works?

Mopping can be a very effective way of maintaining a floor, but certain mop types are better suited to the
task.

Microfibre Mop Heads
Generally a microfibre flat mop head will give the best result. Microfibre uses its tiny fibres
to pick up more dirt than normal cloth or yarn type mop heads. Using a deep pile head will
get into the ‘troughs’ of the floor and cling onto the dirt and remove it, rather than just push
it around.

Disposable Non-Woven Mop Heads
Non-woven mop heads are becoming increasingly popular, and for good reason- these are
super-absorbant and fast drying which offer superior cleaning performance over against
standard yarn mop heads.
Depending on the application, at the end of a 1-2 weeks you can simply just throw them
away and use a new one. An additional advantage is that they wont stink in the cleaning
cupboard as they dont rot down in water.

Single Mop Bucket Vs. Double Mop Bucket
The main operational advantage of using a double bucket system compared to a single buck-
et is that you keep the clean water clean and therefore achieve a better, quicker floor clean.

Single Mop Bucket System
Pros- Cheap, lightweight and takes up less space
Cons- Spreads the dirt around as you use the same water to rinse the dirty mop as the
cleaning solution.
The problem with single bucket systems is the cleaning solution quickly becomes soiled as
soon as you drip the mop back into the bucket. Every time you wring out the mop and dip
it back into the bucket, the solution becomes more and more soiled. You wouldn’t consider
throwing dirty water on a floor to clean it, but in effect this is what you are doing using a
single bucket system.

Double Mop Bucket System
Pros- Separate rinsing and cleaning solution, takes dirt off the floor
Cons- More expensive initially, takes more storage space
The main advantage of the double bucket system is the separating of the cleaning solution
and the dirty/rinsing water. This gives you the ability to rinse your dirty mop head out in the
rinse water, wring it out and then dip a relatively clean mop head into the cleaning solution.
Take care when selecting a double mop system, some have not been designed correctly- you
must be able to rinse the dirty mop head out in the dirty water. Sadly, there are lots of oth-
erwise good double mop systems that due to the design, prohibit you putting the mop head
into the dirty water bucket. This means you can’t rinse out the dirty mop head. All you can
do is wring it out and then you are forced to put a semi-dirty mop head back into the clean-
ing solution bucket.

The Smart Mop system is the best system for cleaning and maintaining non-slip
safety flooring. It pairs deep pile microfibre mop heads that really lifts the dirt out
of the safety flooring and the best double bucket we have come across. It is large
and has a great wringer; so you can really clean out the dirt from the head before
going back to the clean water.
The capacity on this bucket means you can clean really large areas without having
to go back and refill.
This system is the bridge between normal mopping and a scrubber drier; floors can
literally change colours when mopping!

Using Contact Time and Agitation

If you are only cleaning small areas or very low traffic areas you may get away without buying large
equipment by using contact time and a good old scrubbing brush or edging tool.

Apply a solution of a powerful alkaline chemical like Windmill Wrestler onto the floor using a mop and then
leave for around 5-10 minutes, then agitate using a scrubbing brush, deck scrub or an edging tool. Then use
a wet pick up vacuum cleaner to remove the slurry. By using the contact time the chemical does a lot of the
work for you.

Floor Scrubbing - Cylindrical Brush Machines

Cylindrical brush technology provides effective cleaning of hard floors with
a low-moisture, deep scrubbing action, and leaves floors ready to walk on in
minutes.
The Multiwash is a great machine for safety flooring as it drips/pumps
cleaning solution onto the hard floor, scrubs the floor using counter-rotating
brushes and then picks up the cleaning solution by flicking the dirty solution
onto a central drum, then scrapes this into a collection tray without the use
of a vacuum/squeegee assembly leaving the floor nearly dry. Multiwash
machines are available in both mains and battery and have great brush
pressure and cleaning performance in each variety. It works best just using
warm water, and if needed using a trigger spray of chemical seperately ahead
of the machine for heavily soiled areas. If you are using it for cleaning
entrance matting and short pile carpet avoid the 16-MW340 standard drip
tray model as it can leave the carpet a bit streaky.
For smaller areas you can also get a scrubber drier that is around the size of
an upright in the form of a Nilfisk SC100- perfect for maintaining smaller floor
spaces very easily.

Floor Scrubbing - Disc Scrubbing Machines

For larger areas of safety flooring in particular sheet safety floors, a disk machine is the best option for speed.
Areas like halls and corridors are best cleaned using this method. Disc machines let a solution of chemical
and water out onto the floor and scrubs using either a brush or a nylon floor pad and then sucks the solution
up with a squeegee bar on the back of the machine to leave the floor dry straight away.
Floor Pad or Brush?
If you have a flat floor like the one pictured above, you are best off going with a nylon floor pad- they wear
more quickly but are very inexpensive, and are more abrasive. Choose either blue for standard cleaning, or
green for heavy scrubbing. Brushes wear very insidiously, and after a period of time they will become
ineffective.
Brushes are often best if you are cleaning tiles or for very uneven floors, and sometimes a softer brush can
be the best option, to allow it to cope with the undulations of the floor.
Battery or Mains?
Mains machines are cheaper to buy and run, but you have to think about the cable. Mains power is a good
choice if you are working several hours at a time, there is no risk of running out of charge!
Battery powered machines are much more popular these days, and on the larger machines it can last up to
4 hours. For cleaning larger areas then a battery machine is a must as it they make cleaning so much more
convenient than mains power.
Low Foaming Chemical
It is important to use a low foaming chemical in the tank, as this protects the foam from going into the
vacuum motor- it is important as if a foamy product is used it can be a very expensive mistake!
Double Scrub Method
To give a deeper clean, try lifting the squeegee, scrubbing the floor first and then go back to pick up the dirty
solution, allowing contact time for the chemical to work.

A Problem Solver - Melamine
Sponge Floor Pads

Melamine sponges are made from exactly the same material
as magic sponges. These are incredibly effective at remov-
ing marks and performing deep cleaning tasks with just plain
water. To use the pads wet the pad, attach to the machine
and use as normal with plenty of water through the machine
(if you are using a scrubber drier, turn the solution control to
maximum).

If you have a floor where conventional chemical and floor pads
aren’t cleaning the ingrained dirt, give these a try- they are
great problem solvers. Light coloured safety flooring will come
up brilliantly with these pads.
Melamine pads can also be used to take polish off polished
floors depending on the floor type.

Try the 6” pads on the Power Brush XL shown on page 52, it
lifts ingrained dirt out of safety flooring in toilets exceptionally
easily!

Pressure Washers with Hard Surface Tools

Some applications require different solutions. For more dirty areas, or areas with floor drains like
changing rooms, pressure washers are the perfect solution. They are given an intensive clean and get into
floors where it would otherwise be very labour intensive to bring up clean.
If you are going to pressure wash, you definitely need a hard surface cleaner. There are 2 options shown
below- the standard one is just a shroud with rotating jets, the one on the right has a vacuum hose on it too
and has a jet which points the dirty water back down the hose. These are incredibly effective at cleaning
hard surfaces as they leave the floor incredibly evenly clean.

Steam Machines

Steam machines will give a great demonstration on safety flooring.
We don’t generally recommend steam for the following reasons:
• They are generally fairly slow. They will give a good result, but

large areas are laborious and time-consuming.
