NEW SERVICE
Dedicated Referral Service for Physiotherapists
London Bridge Hospital has launched a new service, providing physiotherapists with access to our world-leading Consultants for immediate appointment bookings via a new dedicated phone line and email address.
Our Physiotherapy Liaison Team is available between 8.00am and 6.00pm, Monday to Friday, to help with the referral of patients to the hospital. Once the team has been contacted, they will take responsibility and help to arrange timely and convenient appointments at London Bridge Hospital and its Outpatient Centres. Alternatively, patients are welcome to call the number directly once they have been referred by their physiotherapist.

Injuries in marathon runners and other endurance athletes
Speaker: Mr Charles Willis-Owen
Overview: This talk covers a range of lower limb overuse injuries seen in the run-up to the London Marathon, but is equally applicable to a variety of other endurance sports such as cycling and triathlon.
Biography: Mr Charles Willis-Owen is dual qualified
in Orthopaedic Surgery and Sports Medicine, and is
both a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons and a member of the Faculty of Sports and Exercise Medicine. Mr Willis-Owen is passionate about all forms of sport
and has competed at international elite level for marathon running, as well as at University and regional levels for cycling, triathlon and rowing.
The skiing knee
Speaker: Mr Andrew Davies
Overview: This talk will discuss the pattern of injury and treatment, priorities and timing of intervention.
Biography: Mr Andrew Davies was appointed as a Specialist Knee Surgeon to Guy’s and St Thomas’ Hospital in 2000, and has built up expertise in all aspects of knee reconstruction with more than 2000 ACL reconstructions. His practice focuses on ligament reconstruction, all aspects of cartilage surgery, complex reconstruction including osteotomy and joint replacements including partial, complete and revision.

The unstable knee in primary care
Speaker: Mr Adil Ajuied Overview: This talk will cover
patellofemoral instability and dislocation and how to manage it, with or without surgery.
Biography: Mr Adil Ajuied is a Consultant at Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust, and specialises exclusively in knee surgery. His special interests include knee arthroscopy, ACL reconstruction, meniscus
repair, cartilage reconstruction,
joint replacement and limb trauma.
Wobbly ankles: a common but treatable condition
Speaker: Mr Sam Singh Overview: This talk will discuss
ankle instability, which is often under-diagnosed. It will look at the conservative and surgical management of pain and instability post sprain.
Biography: Mr Sam Singh is a Senior Consultant Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Surgeon based at Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust. His special interests are ankle sports injuries, fractures and arthritis, ligament reconstruction, foot arthritis and disorders of the Achilles Tendon.
Shoulder instability – simple solutions to a difficult problem
Speaker: Mr Andrew Richards Overview: This talk takes a detailed look
at the assessment of the unstable shoulder and how to get the athlete (and non-athlete) back to full activity.
Biography: Mr Andrew Richards is a Consultant at Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust. His specialist interests are in shoulder and elbow surgery and complex traumatic injuries of the upper limb, including the contact athlete.

Analysis of fusion vs disc replacement outcomes in cervical spine surgery
Speaker: Mr Bhupal Chitnavis
Overview: This talk will look at an award-winning paper that presents data in a prospective study looking at outcomes in cervical surgery.
Biography: Mr Bhupal Chitnavis is a Spinal Neurosurgeon at King’s College Hospital, London. His special interests include spine surgery including scoliosis, sciatica, back pain and CyberKnife® for both brain and spine.
The evidence base for posterior spinal surgery
Speaker: Mr Thomas Ember
Overview: This talk will discuss rationale for the operation approach, based on various researchers’ findings. It will also consider how this impacts the patient’s short- and long-term goals.
Biography: Mr Thomas Ember is a Consultant Orthopaedic and Spinal Surgeon at Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust and Great Ormond Street Hospital. His special interests include adult and paediatric spinal surgery, scoliosis, kyphosis, tumours, fractures, lumbar and cervical disc degeneration, sciatica, injection therapies, vertebroplasty.

Return to play – can we cheat physiology? Speaker: Uzo Ehiogu
Overview: This talk will discuss rehabilitation and training, and its purpose to exploit the adaptive capacity
of the individual to self-organise and reach their movement potential. This seminar looks critically at the strength and conditioning principles underpinning the rehabilitation
of the ‘weekend warrior’ after spinal surgery.
Biography: Uzo Ehiogu is the Acting Physiotherapy and Occupational Therapy Manager at London Bridge Hospital, and a Clinical Specialist in Spinal Therapy. He set up the Spinal Therapy Unit, which specialises in diagnosis and treatment of spinal and hip-related musculoskeletal conditions.
Return to sports in adolescents after major reconstruction deformity surgery
Speaker: Mr Khai Lam
Overview: This talk will discuss how returning to sports after major reconstructive spinal surgery remains the goal in most young, fit, sporting adolescents. Mr Lam will discuss some surgical presentations and review existing opinions on the subject.
Biography: Mr Khai Lam is a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon based at Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust. His special interests include lumbar and cervical disc replacement surgery, sciatica, adult and childhood deformities/scoliosis, tumours, infections, fractures, inflammatory disorders and lumbar cervical injection therapies.

Modern management of traumatic injuries of the knee
Speaker: Mr Dominic Spicer
Overview: This talk will discuss how and why the incidence of knee injuries continues to increase. Accurate early diagnosis is crucial to management. It will look at the latest imaging – and current approaches to diagnosis and management of knee injuries – in both high level sportspeople, and also in the less sporty, but often equally driven, ‘weekend warriors’.
Biography: Mr Dominic Spicer is a Consultant Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgeon in the Lower Limb Unit at Imperial College London. Previously, he was a Consultant at Barts and the Royal London Hospital Trauma Unit.
He specialises in all aspects of knee surgery. 10
Trauma of the hip and pelvis Speaker: Mr Paul Culpan
Overview: This talk will provide a refresher of the classification of fractures, and the issues Orthopaedic Consultants face in the management of hip and pelvic trauma. Be prepared for some very interesting case studies.
Biography: Mr Culpan is a Consultant at Barts and the Royal London Hospital, where he specialises in pelvic and acetabular trauma surgery, minimally invasive techniques and more complex hip and knee surgery.

Speaker: Mr Amit Amin Overview: This talk will cover the
common sporting injuries that affect the foot and ankle, with emphasis on new concepts and surgical advances.
Biography: Mr Amit Amin is a dedicated Foot and Ankle Specialist, based at St George’s Hospital. He provides a tertiary referral service and deals with common and complex foot and ankle problems.
Hand and wrist sports injuries Speaker: Mr Mark Phillips
Overview: This talk will give an overview of the most common injuries to the hand and wrist from sport, discussing mechanism, anatomy, pathophysiology, examination findings and investigative pathways.
Biography: Mr Mark Phillips is a Consultant at King’s College Hospital, where he specialises in hand surgery and complex fracture reconstruction. Mr Phillips is an enthusiastic teacher and teaches at all levels, from medical student to Consultant.
Sporting injuries of the upper limb
Speaker: Mr Simon Owen-Johnstone Overview: This talk will cover common
sports injuries affecting the shoulder and elbow.
Biography: Mr Owen-Johnstone is a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon, who practises at London Bridge Hospital. His special interests are in shoulder pain, shoulder dislocation/impingement and shoulder bursitis/tendonitis.

Rheumatological conditions in the young and athletic
Speaker: Dr Jon Houghton
Overview: This talk will focus on the common rheumatological conditions that present in a young and athletic population. There is often a significant delay
in diagnosis or misdiagnosis related to sporting injury. The talk will focus on inflammatory back pain and the spondyloarthropathies.
Biography: Dr Jon Houghton is the Medical Director of London Sports Orthopaedics, and has extensive experience of NHS, Military and elite sporting environments. He
has previously been the Clinical Lead for Lower Limb Rehabilitation at DMRC Headley Court and is currently the Chief Medical Officer for the Football Association of Wales.
How to treat tendons Speaker: Dr Jonathan Rees
Overview: This talk explains why every tendon patient is unique and should be managed in a bespoke manner. Dr Rees will provide an overview of the management of tendinopathy including diagnosis, medical management and physical rehabilitation. The talk will emphasise
the benefits to patient care of close working between physiotherapist and physician.
Biography: Dr Jonathan Rees is a highly experienced Consultant in Sports Medicine and Rheumatology. He has worked at the highest levels in sport, including Physician to the London 2012 Olympic Games, and Physician to the Great Britain 2008 Paralympic Team in Beijing. He is at the forefront of new developments in rheumatology and is qualified in musculoskeletal ultrasound.

Overview: This talk looks at the spectrum of spinal injuries, trauma from sporting injuries, and accidents

Biography: Mr Alexander Montgomery is a Consultant Spinal Surgeon at Barts and the Royal London Hospital and London Sports Orthopaedics. His patients include members of cycling’s Team Sky, professional rugby players, professional golfers, and Olympic rowers, as well as many City-based sportsmen. His practice also covers the full spectrum of adult degenerative conditions, with the focus on getting his patients back to their desired activity.
Sporting injuries of the shoulder – from the track to the gym, how to prevent, assess and treat
Speaker: Professor Tony Kochhar has a Chair in Sports Science at the University of Greenwich, London.
Overview: This talk will cover all aspects of sporting injuries, from the recreational to the elite athlete covering racquet sports, cycling and gym injuries.
Biography: Mr Tony Kochhar is a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon. His special interests include shoulder and elbow surgery and keyhole surgery, sports injuries, repetitive strain injury (RSI), tennis elbow, arthroscopic subacromial decompression, carpal tunnel and Dupuytren’s contracture.

Biography: Dr Joseph Azzopardi is a Consultant in
Pain Medicine and Anaesthesia at Guy’s and St Thomas’ Hospital. His specialist interests are interventional pain management, degenerative spine disease (neck and back pain), headache and facial pain, complex regional pain syndrome, neuro-modulation (spinal cord stimulation, peripheral nerve stimulation and intrathecal drug delivery), and interventional treatments for cancer pain.
A ‘biopsychosocial’ approach to pain – does it fit in private practice?
Speaker: Rachel Stovell
Overview: This talk will discuss definitions of the term and history, treatment models and then relate this to the private sector and what physiotherapists do.
Biography: Rachel Stovell has worked in musculoskeletal physiotherapy since 1995, in both the NHS and private sector, and completed an MSc in Pain Science with Distinction. She works at London Bridge Hospital and UCLH, pursuing her interest in complex and complicated pain conditions.
