After the journey of Holy Week and the joy and hope
of Easter Sunday, we come into this beautiful month
with gardens coming into bloom, longer days and
better weather to enjoy.
There are Bank Holidays to look forward to and of
course we head towards the Queen’s Platinum Jubi-
lee celebrations at the start of June (2nd to 5th), with
all that will take place to mark this amazing occasion.
Do look out for posters and information in your com-
munities about events. I know of flower festivals,
street parties and special services in church. There
will be much to join in with.
This year, Her Majesty The Queen, becomes the first British Monarch to
celebrate a Platinum Jubilee after 70 years of service. What an amazing
person she is in so many ways. We can’t doubt her commitment to this
country and people.
In our communities there are always people who go the extra mile to help
others and the Platinum Champions Awards has been launched as part of
the celebrations. If you know a volunteer who deserves recognition then do
nominate them. There is further information at: www.platinumjubilee.gov.
uk
The Queen is Supreme Governor of the Church of England and also our
head of state. She has spoke often of how her faith sustains her. On her
Coronation Day on 2 June 1953, she said this: “When I spoke to you last...
I asked you all, whatever your religion, to pray for me on the day of my
Coronation - to pray that God would give me wisdom and strength to carry
out the promises that I should then be making... I have been uplifted and
sustained by the knowledge that your thoughts and prayers were with me.”
Being part of a community of faith who prays, has given her great strength.
If you haven’t visited your local church for a while, why not go along to a
service or go and pray quietly in the building on your own. The Church is
there for everyone and we continue to be there as a beacon of light and
hope in our communities.
We’d love to see you!

Hello and welcome to the May edition of the
Parish News.

There is so much going on at the moment, it’s
like we’ve all been locked down for a couple of
years and are finding our feet again!

What fantastic news about the Village Stores! Well done to Mark & Mel
Holmes, who have worked so hard in securing the future of this amen-
ity for the village. I’m sure you, like me, will want to thank them and wish
them the very best for the future…… Now we have the stores secured,
make sure you use it, that will show its value to us all, and help to ensure
it is there for many years to come - See page 14-15 for more.

Did you manage to get to the Palm Sunday service on 10th April? Dozens
of people joined the Donkeys for a walk through the village and a family
service and Hot Cross buns in the church. See the pictures in the centre
pages. It was a wonderful and uplifting morning.

The flower arrangers of the church are holding a “Flower Festival” from
2nd to 5th June. If you would like to contact them and perhaps offer some
help or an arrangement, details can be found on their poster page. The
Parish News will once again be providing an arrangement........ Oh you
didn’t see it in 2019? Well I think you’d better pop along this year and take
a look!
The Village Jubilee Street Party is on 5th AVMC
June, being organised by Wendy from
the Talbot is in major planning mode, Saturday Football
details of that can be found on page 21 Saturday Mornings 9am
My own plea, is on page 4. Asking people Uplyme Playing Field
to help support the Parish Magazine. The September to December & April
last two years has seen it make a loss
- which is not surprising - but we would Axminster 3G pitch
like to ensure it’s future….. a bit like the January - March

Parish News Appeal

Hello Dear Readers

As you will probably know the Parish News is
edited and produced by Uplyme Church as a
service to the community. The work of the editor
and distributors is voluntary and takes quite a bit
of time and commitment to organise and get the
magazine ready for delivery and then through your
door!

We survive, and hopefully can continue to survive,
on donations and advertising to help cover the
cost of printing. Advertising revenue has dwindled
in the past 2 years as businesses scale back and
reduce their costs due to the pandemic and now
the effect of rising costs. To that end we are
appealing to you to make a donation towards the
cost of the magazine to help us keep it going. If
every household who receive the magazine could
make a donation of between £5 - £10 for the year,
it would ensure the continuation of the magazine
for the future. Not everyone has or uses the
internet, and many people in our parish rely on the
magazine to see and read what’s going on around the village.

There are many ways to make your donation, you can send a donation to us:

1 Post - to The treasurer (Sharyn Walker) at Uplyme Church, Pound Lane, Uplyme,
Devon, DT7 3TT.
2 Bank Transfer - contact Sharyn on 444811 for bank transfer details.
3 Leave at Church - you can drop your donation into the green postbox at the
bottom of the path to the church. Cash donations can be placed in the wall safe
just inside the church on the right hand side
4 Debit Card - There is a “tap and pay” machine just inside the church set for £3,
you can tap and pay on that as many times as you like!!
5 Online - you can go to the website www.uplymechurch.org.uk and click on the
“Donate” button on the right hand side of the page and make your donation
through the CAF Bank portal.

We have recently (highlighted in this magazine) had some fantastic news regarding “Saving
the Village Stores” and we would very much like you to support the ‘Parish Mag’ and keep it
going.

Please do respond if you can, as I’m sure you want to see the magazine continue and
flourish in the Parish.

Kind Regards

Robin - Editor

Uplyme Help at Hand - cares

General Enquiries: Anne 01297 444799
Transport: Marilyn 07885859946
David 01297 444799
Fred 01297 445647

As I write this in April, 2 of the above names (Anne and
Dave) are suffering from Covid after 2 years of taking
every precaution! It serves as a salutary reminder that
this epidemic is still very much with us and we need to
continue to act with care, particularly when supporting
our most vulnerable villagers.

On a positive note, if you are in the extremely vulnerable category as defined by
the NHS, the system works superbly! Within a very short space of time following
the confirmation of a positive test, Dave received a call from the hospital to discuss
possible treatments. He had an antibody infusion the very next morning and is
recovering well. I’m not too bad, thanks I’m sure, to the vaccinations and booster.
Do get yours if you haven’t already – COVID as many of you know isn’t fun.
Help at Hand transport is up and running!

• Please continue to wear masks (unless you are a driver with glasses who
can’t see to drive through the mist!).

• If you have symptoms, don’t ask for a lift unless a test confirms negative.
• In the past Help at Hand drivers have covered all costs themselves
• With petrol prices at an all-time high, this may no longer be possible.
• A small donation to Help at Hand would be gratefully received and would

go some way to cover travel costs
Forward plans for outings

• A small group of people for a coffee towards the end of May
• Outside, if possible, to minimise any chance of infection.
• Contact Anne or Marilyn if you want to be included in that or subsequent

ones.
• A chance once again to meet up with old friends and make new ones!
Please come and talk to us at Uplyme Village Fete on June 11th.
• new ideas welcome
• new volunteers welcome
• a chance to chat!

Dorset Art Weeks 2022

Artists from across the whole of Dorset are busy preparing
for the ever popular Open Studio event in May. It’s a bi-
annual event and this year celebrates 30 years since the
very first Arts Week. The 16 day event attracts both locals
and visitors from all over the UK.

On the far west of Dorset the
towns and villages surrounding
Lyme Regis and Bridport there
are more than 70 artists taking part. Tucked away along the
leafy lanes creative havens await.

Local artists to Uplyme include Jools Woodhouse who
paints local scenes in her unique and colourful style, Alison
Bowskill, a printmaker based in Lyme Regis, Fran Williams
maker of small automata and interesting wooden figures, painter Christine Allison and
Studio 19 on Broad Street, Lyme Regis, a creative studio collective of 8 artists.

The full colour directory of all artists with their venue
numbers is available to pick up around Lyme Regis
and Uplyme which complements the website which
has practical information. The shelf life of the brochure
now far exceeds the event as many people keep it for
years and use it as a directory for finding Dorset
artists.

There is also a very easy to use app for your phone
which even shows you the closest venues to where you are with opening times, a map
and description of the venue.

Follow the yellow and red signs around town.

News from King George’s Field

We are pleased that Martin and Tim
Edwards have managed to find a dry
enough spell to enable them to carry
out most of the drainage work on the
footpath side of the field. A new
French drain has been created along
the croquet lawn hedge and
connected to an existing drain. At the
same time the Cricket Club have
installed an electric cable to their
digital scoreboard. We are very
grateful to the Uplyme Community
fund and the Horticultural Society,
who have made significant financial
grants allowing us to undertake this work. A big thank you to them. There is still some
topsoil and seeding required to finish this work which we hope will be done in the next
few weeks.

The Cricket Club have been working hard to prepare both the wicket and the outfield
for the coming season and the field is looking good, with the trees surrounding the field
starting to bud. There will be regular matches from early May on Saturday and some
Sunday afternoons as well as some Monday and Wednesday evening games - all are
welcome to come and watch these games on our lovely field.

The members of the Croquet club have also worked hard on their lawn and an extra
playing area in front of of the old pavilion. The members are already playing some
friendly games and getting in plenty of practice looking forward to playing some
matches in the months ahead. The club are a very friendly group who are always
looking for new members. If you are interested their website can be found at
www.lymvalleycroquetclub.org.uk or contact the club secretary, John Marjoribanks,
tel: 01297 33742.

The Tennis Court is in great condition so why not book a court and make the most of
the longer evenings. Remember the court can be booked by anyone, with online
booking and payment. A coded padlock is on the gate and the code issued when
booking. The cost of an hour’s use of the court is only £7. Book the court online at:
https://clubspark.lta.org.uk/UplymeVillageTennisCourt Alternatively just type in
Uplyme Tennis into your search engine, like Google and the link should come up.

We are looking forward to the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee celebrations, being
organised by Wendy Gardner and her team for a picnic on the field on Sunday
afternoon, 5th June and the Uplyme Village Fete on Saturday June 11th.

Marshwood Vale – the making of a landscape: Bob Machin
Woodmead Hall, Lyme Regis

Since retiring as the Bristol University Resident Tutor, Bob has taken the op-
portunity to investigate landscape history, including how the landscape of
Marshwood Vale was created. In this presentation, Bob will summarise the main
findings of his book on the Vale, published last autumn.
For details, please see www.lymeregisu3a.org. Non-members welcome for a
donation of £2.

Time to take some responsibility for our health

Did you know that nearly one half of the NHS budget is spent on diseases that
could have been prevented? And that Britain’s overall health budget is now bigger
than the GDP of Greece?

So says the Health Secretary, Sajid Javid, who has recently warned that the NHS
cannot continue spending “vast sums” on lifestyle conditions that are “wholly
avoidable”.

Just one example is obesity. Obesity rates have doubled since the 1990s, with
two out of three adults now overweight or obese. Our lifestyles have also become
increasingly sedentary. The result? An eighth of the NHS drugs budget is now
spent just on treating cases of diabetes, 90 per cent of which are caused by ex-
cess weight. www.parishpump.co.uk

Mrs Ethelston’s

New School Project

After all the recent uncertainty it is very welcome news that the future of
the shop, Post Office and filling station is secured and we congratulate
Mark Holmes and David Ostler on achieving a way to secure the future of
these essential facilities.

We wish Mark and Mel every success and assure them of our full support
as the sustainability of the village has always been of paramount
importance to the Bestic Trust.

Currently we are
working with Devon
Highways, Councillor
Hall and the Parish
Council to determine
the best traffic plan for
the village and the way
in which the school can
contribute to the overall
safety of the
community through that.

As agreed with the SOS group we have run community clinics in recent
months and although the uptake has been lower than anticipated, they
have proved to be a useful means of correcting some of the
misconceptions held about the Bestic Trust and the new school project. We
have decided to suspend clinics for the time being but mindful that this
recent communication has been beneficial they shall be reinstated when
the need arises. In the meantime we would direct your attention to our
website www.bestic-trust.org and facebook page www.facebook.com/
BesticTrust/ or by email [email protected] or in person.

Financing the school project has been a particular focus of our attention in
recent months and our confidence that the sustainable nature and green

28

credentials of the scheme would attract ethical investment has been borne
out by confirmation that Triodos Bank are willing to support our aims and
the new school project. This is a very big step in the right direction that will
undoubtedly encourage interest from other investors, however all of that
coming to pass is conditional upon our attaining a significant contribution
from local and/or central
government. To that end
last December we
submitted a very
detailed application for
funds to the Department
for Education (DfE) via
the Capital Investment
Fund (CIF), an annual
opportunity for schools
to address their capital
needs beyond the scope of educational funding. We are expecting to hear
the outcome of our bid after the Easter holiday. In March this year we
applied for the project to be considered under the government's Schools
Rebuilding Programme, a more comprehensive scheme to address the
needs of schools in poor condition. In April it was confirmed that it had
y been accepted. It may be that our CIF application is declined on the basis
n that it will be considered as part of this larger initiative, and if that is the
ll case we will not know whether this alternative funding will be made
available to us until some point in the Autumn.
.
We will keep the community informed over the coming months and will
hold open meetings and exhibitions as the project develops. Our website
will be updated regularly and we would draw your attention again to the
walk-through video of the new school that is available there that clearly
e explains our vision for the project. For those of you without internet access
we will endeavour to arrange a public screening of the video in the near
future.

Happy Easter! 29

Our amazing StreetScene team Combpyne-Rousdon

an amazing 70 Jubilee Oaks in

Platinum Jubilee. I will be liaising with Parish Councils to present commemorative plaques.

£150 council tax rebate letters sent to residents of Band A to D properties.

East Devon District Council is administering this programme on behalf of Central Government.
Payments are designed to help residents mitigate the effect of sharp rises in energy prices, coupled
with an increase in inflation.

Residents, who pay council tax via direct debit, will soon be receiving their letters if they meet the
following conditions, as of 1 April 2022:

• Their property is banded A-D or band E with a disablement reduction
• They are liable to pay council tax at the address
• The property is their sole or main residence

What if you don’t pay council tax by direct debit?
East Devon District Council will soon be writing separately to eligible residents, who do not pay
through direct debit. They will then be able to apply for a rebate.

Find out more about the scheme here - https://www.eastdevon.gov.uk/council-tax-rebate/

When will you get your payment?
If your direct debit for your council tax was set up before 31 March 2022 , EDDC will pay the £150
direct to your bank account. The aim is to do this within 15 working days of successfully receiving
your April council tax instalment. EDDC’s direct debit instalment dates are on 1st, 17th and 25th
days of the month; your date will be shown on your bill.

If there is a reason why you would not want EDDC to use the bank details it holds, contact the
authority by Monday, 11 April, online at http://www.eastdevon.gov.uk/council-tax/contact-us or

30

call 01395 517 446 and select option 4 for Council Tax Rebate – EDDC is expecting high call volumes
so you may have to wait to speak with an officer.

What if your April council tax direct debit instalment is unpaid?
To make sure your bank details have been verified, EDDC must successfully collect your April
instalment before paying the rebate direct to your bank account.

This means that if there is a problem with your April direct debit payment, EDDC will write to you
and invite you to apply for the payment instead; you will not need to contact the authority yourself.

East Devon District Council grant funding to help reduce local poverty.

The new ‘Action on Poverty Fund’ is designed to help support projects to reduce financial pressures
on those in need, within the limited resources of the District Council.

Council welcomes applications for between £500 and £5,000, from properly constituted and not-
for-private-profit organisations or groups, including, voluntary and community sector groups and
organisations, Parish Councils, Charities and other groups such as Community Interest Companies
who are recognised as well placed to deliver innovative and valuable projects.

What sort of project may secure funding?...
• Tackling hidden poverty for those struggling but not currently seeking help.
• Providing recognised and qualified advice on budgeting, money and debt issues.
• Helping people access support from the council and others, to see if they are
entitled to welfare benefits and other financial help and support.
• Supporting low-income residents to access the internet and develop digital skills.
• Encouraging volunteering for local voluntary and community groups.
• Projects that seek to understand and address the causes of food poverty.
• Helping residents in fuel or water poverty reduce energy and water costs.
• Supporting young people in reaching their employment potential.
• Improving health outcomes for people due to financial hardship and debt, including
access to good diet, cookery classes, healthy lifestyles and ill health prevention.
• Helping to manage mental health issues arising from any impact of poverty.

Applications close on 30th September 2022 with available funding limited.
