A Reflection from: Ven. Nick Shutt, Archdeacon of Plymouth March is a month that marks a change in the seasons. The clocks move forward an hour on the 26th. We lose an hour of sleep, and I wouldn’t mind betting there will be more than one person turning up for church at the wrong time! ‘Changes of seasons’ happen in all sorts of contexts. Next month I enter a new season in my life as I retire as Archdeacon of Plymouth. Churches also go through seasons too. Some may feel they are in a spiritual winter. Others can see signs of Spring with new shoots appearing in their life in Christ. Many are enjoying the full bloom of Summer whilst some may think their congregations are in the autumn of their lives. Whatever season we may be in, individually or corporately, we continue to move forward taking that next step in our journey with Christ. St Paul expressed it this way when writing to the Philippian Church: Not that I have already obtained this or have already reached the goal; but I press on to make it my own, because Christ Jesus has made me his own. 13 Beloved, I do not consider that I have made it my own; but this one thing I do: forgetting what lies behind and straining forward to what lies ahead, 14 I press on towards the goal for the prize of the heavenly call of God in Christ Jesus. (Philippians 3:12-14) As we move through Lent and journey towards Easter may we press on in our life in Christ whatever season we find ourselves.
Welcome to the March edition of the Parish News. As I compile this magazine in the middle of February, I am struck that quite suddenly we have been seeing lots of signs of spring. The snowdrops are a given for this time of year, but my crocuses are out and I’ve even had a daffodil in full bloom! I don’t know why, as all the others beside it are just buds! So good to see that many of the articles this month are looking forward to events taking place in and around the Village. Wendy is looking forward to a good old village celebration for the Coronation in early May, but before that we’ve got the Big Brew event, Car Washes at the Rectory (back by popular demand) and the Church Spring Fayre to look forward to. The Parish Council elections take place in May, and they are looking for new councillors to join them. If you feel you have something to offer the Village, why not think about standing. Details are in the Parish Council Report. Do keep your articles coming in and lets help plug those charitable and village events, not everybody in the village is on social media! Hope you notice that the back cover of the magazine has changed? As it’s available in colour, I decided to take advantage of that fact!! Ed From the Children of - Mrs Ethelstons School Last half term we were focussing on our core value of perseverance, which is very important when the days are so short and the nights so long and cold. Year 5 and 6 went on a trip to the Dorchester Tutankhamun exhibition and Year 1 and 2 dressed as Victorian street children for the day. Their teachers were very strict! In March we are looking forward to World Book Day (you might see us wearing different costumes) and we are having two science days which we are very excited about!
Uplyme Help at Hand - cares Loneliness is not being alone, it’s the feeling that no-one cares Loneliness becomes even more apparent at this time of the year when the weather is cold and sometimes the paths are slippery. Going out is a challenge. Loneliness is not obvious. It’s not just old age and bereavement. It needs gently teasing out. Think about other causes • those who have recently moved to the area and are missing friends; • young mums struggling without support from extended families; • single parents; • those with partners working away. • those struggling financially – a cup of coffee is too much of a luxury • people on their own who are recovering from illness We can all help address this in our community. At Help at Hand we love to meet new people. If a social event is not appropriate for you, we could come to you for a coffee and a chat. Please don’t be lonely, do give us a call. A lot of people enjoy an outing for coffee or tea. Our next one is to The Dower House in Rousdon If you think you might be interested in joining us do let us know. Transport is always provided not to mention the great company! If you need help or feel you can offer help please contact us on one of the numbers below. Sometimes we have requests requests to drop in and check on elderly parents whose families are going on holiday, and we’ve been fascinated hearing about their lives and sharing some of our stories with them. There is also an increasing long term need to check/pop in regularly on those with dementia who are being supported to remain in their own homes as long as possible. Plans are now definite for the date of our Village Party to celebrate The Coronation of King Charles lll Our celebrations will be held on Sunday 7th May To be held on the King George V playing field. We have our first ‘event committee’ meeting in the pub on February 28th after which we will let everyone know about reserving tables etc (like we did for Her Majesty Jubilee Party) If you would like to join us at the pub on 28th Feb 7 p.m and be part of the organising team we would love to see you. We are very grateful for the support of Our Parish Council, The Village Hall Committee, The King George V playing field Committee and The Cricket Club. As we all know… as Villagers love a good party and this event is sure to be just that. Platters and Gin with our very Talented Finn We are very pleased to say that on Wednesday 15th March we are hosting an evening event at the pub offering you to the chance to enjoy the cooking talents of a young man from our Village who is embarking on his future career as an exciting up and coming Chef. I am sure this will be a lovely evening, with some live background music as well. Please ring pub to book your table, learn a bit more about the evening and support this very ambitious young man. 01297 443136. Our grateful thanks to Gary who with help from Steve moved the fence panels from the Paddock and relocated them in the car park, we just have to paint them one colour now! Steve has been doing some work in the garden ready for painting and planting and the hope of nice warm weather. The older members of our very impressive Team Talbot have been getting their university offers…. I am already going into panic mode thinking about them flying the pub nest. Steve and I are so proud of them all. Wednesday Pie Nights have been well supported Thank You all so much, we will keep them going into March. We will change Wednesday 15th to Thursday 16th so we can enjoy the evening with Finn. We are of course at one of my favourite times of the year…Six Nations Rugby Tournament. Wales v England is on February 25th a match when our marriage is usually at great risk! However, Steve is so looking forward to watching his beloved Newcastle United who have reached the finals of the Carabao Cup play Manchester United at Wembley on the 26th that he is not as argumentative about the Rugby…..every cloud! I read this quote which I though was a good lesson. Do the best you can until you know Better Then, when you know Better, Do Better. That’s about it for this Month. Take Care of Each Other Warmest wishes Wendy

Eco Corner: Over the next few months we are going to consider how we can live a greener lives in our homes. Let’s start in the kitchen. Corinthians 10:31 “So, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God.” 1. Never put warm or hot food into the fridge or freezer as this will make the fridge work extra hard to try and keep it cold; always allow food to cool down first. 2. Use a bowl to wash up rather than a running tap and save £25 a year in energy bills. 3. When making a cup of tea, only boil the amount of water that you need. You waste electricity (and money) heating water you won’t use. 4. Stop using aluminium foil for cooking wherever possible; use a container with a lid that can be reused. Aluminium in a rare metal and its extraction and purification uses a lot of energy. 5. Eat less meat, particularly red meat; producing 1kg of beef produces the equivalent CO2 to you driving a 300mile round trip while leaving all your lights on at home. World Water Day is 22nd March We take clean water for granted. After all, when did you last turn on the tap and expect filthy water to come out? But sadly, bad water is still a daily reality for billions of people. The United Nations wants to help them by ensuring that everyone can access clean water by 2030. It is part of the so-called ‘2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development’, and it is an enormous challenge. Meanwhile, this year each one of us can do at least something to help on 22nd March. A donation to Water Aid will help provide safe water to marginalised communities worldwide. Simply go to: www.wateraid.org/uk

Journeys of Faith The dramatic Capernaum incident. Jesus Christ wishes us to be free of anxiety about the coming Day of Judgement. Addressing a helpless cripple, Christ first forgives his sins, then affirms his Godly authority to do so by completely healing him with the words "Get up, take your mat and go home." The whole house and surroundings were so crowded that the cripple's four friends had to engage in 'House-breaking." They gained access to Christ by removing turf from the roof, set aside some beams and let their friend down on his mat to Christ's feet. The narrative records that Jesus did what he did "When he saw their faith" i.e., they had recognised the true identity of this carpenter from Nazareth to be the very Son Of God incarnate in a man. So, being as the scriptures also remind us that "All we have sinned and fall short of the glory of God", we know to whom we can confess our sins and, like the cripple's friends, depend on Jesus to both forgive us, remove our anxieties about Judgement Day and welcome us into the joys of His Kingdom of Heaven. To strengthen your own faith about all this, do read about this drama in Mark chapter 2 verses 1 - 12. Then, read it again! David Dare. Traidcraft goes into administration Traidcraft PLC – a Christian group that has spent years campaigning for fair trade – has gone into administration. The stands were familiar to many churchgoers, with almost 3,000 churches in the country selling Traidcraft products at some point in their 40-year history. The brand cited the coronavirus pandemic, the war in Ukraine and soaring energy prices as the reasons behind the severe financial difficulties.
Since obtaining detailed planning permission it has always been our objective to make a meaningful start on the new school site in 2023 in order to retain the consent in perpetuity. To do this we have been looking at options to progress the development as far as possible using the resources we have available in conjunction with funds from third parties. Unfortunately in the absence of seed funding from central or local government we are very unlikely to be able to proceed with erecting the new school building for the time being, however, having recently bid for and received funds following the dissolution of a local charity we are increasingly confident that our meaningful start will include work that will benefit the community and school in 2024. To which end the Bestic Trust would like to thank the Members and Trustees of Abbeyfield Lyme Regis for the grant made in support of our application. More news on the scope of this work will be made known in subsequent editions of Parish News and on our website. 14 Uplyme Parish Council c/o Uplyme Village Hall, Lyme Road, Uplyme, Lyme Regis DT7 3UY Tel: 07413 947067 Email: [email protected] Website: www.uplymeparishcouncil.org Parish News – March 2023 It’s election time! Make a change - become a councillor! The elections for parish Councils are due to take place on 4th May 2023 for East Devon. Uplyme Parish Council are a complement of 10 Councillors in all, including a Chair and Vice-Chair. Local (parish and town) councils and councillors make a massive difference to local people's quality of life. They are passionate about their communities and seek to make a change to help improve their residents' lives. Local councils run numerous services, depending on the size of the council. Many you will see day-to-day, but some are less known. These include introducing solar panels, setting up dementia-friendly groups, organising community buses, creating neighbourhood plans, implementing suitable housing, establishing youth projects, managing allotments and open spaces, maintaining footpaths, public seating and litter bins. Councillors are elected to represent the local community, so you must either live or work in the council area. Becoming a councillor is a rewarding experience as you will be able to make a change in your community to help improve residents' lives. A councillor’s role can include developing strategies and plans for the area, helping with problems and ideas, representing the community, working with other local community groups, decision making and reviewing decisions and talking to the community about their needs and what the council is doing. Are you passionate about your community? Do you want to help make a long-lasting change? Do you have innovative ideas for the council? Do you have concerns about a specific issue and want to do something about it? If this is you, then we need you. We need people from all backgrounds and experiences who reflect their community to put themselves forward for election. Make a change and become a councillor.

March 2023 We now need Voter ID to be able to Vote at Polling Stations… As the 2023 elections to East Devon District Council and Parish Councils approaches, it is important that nobody misses out on the right to vote. Why is voter identification being introduced? Government sees our current electoral system as offering ‘inexcusable potential’ for someone to cast another’s vote at the polling station. Stealing someone’s vote is stealing their voice. Government believes that the extension of the need to show identification to prove who we are when we vote, is a reasonable and proportionate step. This would bring us into line with Northern Ireland, where photographic voter identification has been in use since 2003 and most European countries, including France, Germany, Austria, The Netherlands, as well as Switzerland and Canada, where identification is already required in the voting process. When will this requirement apply? The Elections Act 2022 now means that, from the East Devon District Council elections on 4th May 2023, anyone who wants to vote in person, including those acting as a proxy on behalf of another individual, will need to produce an accepted form of photographic ID to prove their identity before they can be issued with a ballot paper. The new rules will apply at. • UK Parliamentary By-elections • Recall petitions. • Police and Crime Commissioner elections • Local Government elections in England The need for voter ID to be provided at UK Parliamentary General Elections will only apply to polls after 5th October 2023. What identification will be acceptable? A wide range of photographic identification will be acceptable, including. • Various concessionary travel passes. • PASS cards • Ministry of Defence identity cards • Photocard parking permits, issued as part of the Blue Badge scheme. • Drivers licenses • Passports • FREE Voter Authority Certificate.
Expired photographic identification will also be accepted, if the photograph is of a good enough likeness to allow polling station staff to confirm the identity of the holder. It does not matter if identification is out of date. For more details, or to apply for a FREE ‘Voter authority Certificate’, the GOV.UK website is accessible through… https://eastdevon.gov.uk/elections-and-registering-to-vote/voter-id-2023/voter-id-2023/ Will this additional measure put people off voting at all? Government believes that we already use photo ID every day and that it is reasonable and proportionate approach to extend this practice to voting, to give us confidence that our vote is ours, and ours alone. Government also disputes claims that more than two million people entitled to vote will not be able to do so. It has published research which suggest that 98% of the electorate already has a photographic document of the types which will be accepted, and that the remain 2% who do not do, does not support the scale of claims made. Are people from ethnic minorities less likely to have photo ID? Government disputes this suggestion. It maintains that 99% of ethnic minorities have a form of ID which would be acceptable, as do 98% of people who identify as white. What about elderly people? Government research suggests that 99% of 18-29 year olds hold suitable identification, as do 98% of those aged 70 and above. Isn’t there a bigger problem with fraud taking place in postal voting and intimidating people into appointing a proxy vote? Government recognises fraud and the intent to intimidate or coerce a vote as crimes. It claims that it is stamping out the opportunity for such damage to take place in our elections. As I shared previously, I am not standing for re-election to EDDC in May. If any Trinity constituent is interested in standing for election to represent us on East Devon District Council, I would be pleased to answer (confidentially if you wish!) any questions you might have about the election or role itself. 18 We love March - it’s full of promise: The Spring Equinox (Monday 20th March at 9.24pm this year), so we will have more light than dark again - whoo-hoo! And then on Sunday 26th March the clocks ‘spring forward’ giving us significantly lighter evenings. Some of us might amble round the village in March with inane grins, muttering the old rhyme “Spring is sprung, the grass is riz, I wonder where them birdies is? Them birdies is upon the wing … But that's absurd! The wing is upon the bird.” And for some mad March bargains –come along to the UPLYME VILLAGE HALL JUMBLE SALE SATURDAY 11th MARCH from 10am to midday with jumbly bargains, a raffle, cakes & coffee. We are very grateful for a sizeable grant from the Abbeyfield that will cover the installation of the new heating system – we hope to get the work done during the Summer holidays when the hall is not quite so busy. Uplyme’s Wikipedia entry explains how the old village hall was replaced by the modern building in 1993, financed after a monumenetal fundraising effort by the local people and grants under the leadership of Adrian Pearson. We know the names of all the people who ‘bought a brick’ to fund the building – thank you all. The foundation stone was laid 30 years ago in 1993, completion was in 1994 – and maintenance is becoming more expensive as things begin to wear out or need updating to comply with current regulations. There are many ways to support the Hall, for example, help out practically - like James Booth who is always carrying out jobs. Thank you, James – you are a star! For those villagers who are less practical – support our fundraising events or even make a donation. Saturday 11th Mad March Jumble Sale 10am to Midday Saturday 1st April Frivolous First Coffee Morning You don’t need to be on the committee to offer practical help – just chat to Pete Hackett, John Fowler or any of us on the committee – or pop a note through the hall letter box.
