St Micheal, the Mount and Mont Saint-Michel Back in august, my husband and I had a few days in Cornwall. We took the opportunity to visit relatives in Marazion. As we sat on their terrace we gazed across to St Micheal’s Mount, the sun was shining and the Mount was looking wonderful set against a very blue sky. You may well know that a castle clings to the top of a granite rock just off the coast of Cornwall: obviously, a good defensive position but also the sort of place that would appeal to holy people and especially monks wanting seclusion and peace but still in contact with a community. A church was first built there in 495AD, and a monastery followed a few hundred years later, both dedicated to St Michael the Archangel. It is, if you like, England’s answer to Mont Saint Michel, just off the Normandy coast of France. The fact that both are dedicated to St Michael got me wondering why St Michael? Having visited Mont Saint-Michel on several occasion, sadly always in bad weather, the similarities of the two Mounts is extremely noticeable but I had never to my shame reflected on the dedication. The granite rock of Mont Saint-Michel was originally known as Mont Tombe. In the year 708, Aubert, bishop of Avranches, had a vision being visited by the Archangel Michael who instructed him to build an oratory on the rocky tidal island. Aubert did not pay attention to this vision at first, doubting it was a true vision. The archangel appeared a second time, but still Aubert hesitated, lest this be a demonic manifestation. At last, in exasperation Michael appeared to him again, this time poking him in his head and ordering him to complete the task. Where the archangel touched him, Aubert was left with a hole in his skull. Following this very dramatic nudge from the Arch Angel, Aubert built the oratory and it was dedicated on 16 October 709 to St Michael.
St Michael was and perhaps still is thought of one of the principal angelic warriors, protector against the dark of the night and the Archangel who fought against Satan and his evil angels. Since early Christian times many churches have been dedicated to St Michael and All Angels, as St Michael is believed to be the protector of all people and the church. In fact, 816 churches of England are dedicated to St Michael. How do we feel about wars in heaven and evil falling to earth? Do we regret the loss of these old traditions and celebrations? We certainly haven’t lost the concept of light and dark. We can be afraid of the dark whether physical or in our minds. We hear of the Dark Web and know it to be something where unlawful activity takes place, a place of evil even. We talk of dark moods when thoughts are negative about ourselves and others. We know that when dark clouds overshadow that even the weather will be negative. We are told in the In the words from John’s Gospel, “the heavens opened, and the angels of God descended and ascended on the Son of Man” and that Son of Man brings light into darkness. That light of Christ surrounds us even when darkness seems to enclose us. The light of Christ can penetrate even the deepest darkness, if we open our hearts and minds and let the light in. We look to the light of Christ to lead us, to revive us, to encourage us. In many of the images of St Michael and All angels they are surrounded by light, for the light of Christ brings protection, security, and hope which in the imagery they share with those who contemplate them. Sometimes it is good to stop and review our lives, to look to what is light in your life and what is the darkness. Take time to reflect and see if there is something that needs casting out. You may perhaps listen to an angel poking you in the head and calling you to do something for the glory of God, I do love the fact that St Aubert had to be prodded 3 times, so you might need several prods. You may not need to build a basilica on a rock but there may well be something we each can do to glorify God and to help to build heaven on earth. Our world is troubled there is much darkness in the world so let us each reflect on how we can bring some of the light of Christ into our world. Amen Blessings, Can Cate Edmonds

Parish News Distributor Required! Many Thanks to Jim Thomas for all he has done for the church and for his service delivering the Parish News for many years. One thing Jim did was to look after the flag on the church, raising and lowering it every week! True Gent. Thank you! He is moving out of the village and we wish him and Jane all the best as they embark on a new period in their lives. To that end, we need to find a replacement (or two, Jim picked up an extra round) to deliver the magazine in the parish. Round 1) All the right hand side (as you walk towards Lyme) of Lyme Road from Anne’s Pantry at the corner of Gore Lane up to and including Launchycroft over the bridge before Woodroffe. Round 2 ) All of Pound Lane from the cross roads with Springhead & Rhode Lane as far as Church Street. All of Church Street up to Lyme Road, including Cranbrook and Woodyhyde along the Glen. If you feel you might be able to volunteer your services to deliver these magazines once a month for the community, we would be very grateful. Please email or ring me. My details are in the magazine Ed. Hello and welcome to the November edition of the Parish Magazine We enter this season of Remembrance with some trepidation, as the conflict in the Middle East begins to ramp up. The Humanitarian disaster that is unfolding is extremely worrying. As I write this in the middle of October, millions of people are becoming displaced and are terrified for their future. The Archbishop of Canterbury has said: Pray for the people of Israel, Gaza and the West Bank. Pray for the future of the Holy Land. Pray for those who will weep, and fear, and die tonight. Lord God, we pray, by your great mercy, defend your children from all perils and dangers of this night. Amen. Our own service of Remembrance is being held on 12th November at 10am and wreath laying will take place at the war memorial around 11.15am. Do come and join us for either or both. Ed.
Penfold, Cannington Lane, Uplyme, Dorset DT7 Firstly, a big thank you to Uplyme Stores and their customers for raising £500 from the book scheme. This will go into our general funds to help support activities within the local community. We are happy to make grants to young or old, social or sporting activities and towards the general wellbeing of the community. Our cost of living crisis fund still has a healthy balance and continues to make grants to residents of the village who are facing financial difficulties because of the high price of food and fuel. As we move into winter the need will increase and so please contact us if you are worried about heating your home, feeding your children or generally coping financially at a difficult time. Our cost of living crisis fund was set up just a year ago and received donations specifically to help members of the community. 8 Journeys of Faith Beware Pride and Ingratitude when God answers our prayers. At times we can pray desperately about some personal need or problem. Then, looking back, we can realise that God has indeed answered in various ways. In his love for us, the answer can prove to be “Yes” or “No.” or some times, “Wait!.” We have even forgotten to Acknowledge God’s answer to prayers that He protect our nation. One such example is our ‘airbrushing’ from written history and Annual Remembrance services, acknowledgement of how prayer played a significant part in our November 1942 victory over Nazi Germany at the second battle of El-Alamein. Direct, miraculous intervention by The Almighty prevented Hitler taking Palestine and exterminating the Jewish population there as had been pre-planned with the Islamic Grand Mufti of Jerusalem. At that time, Churchill happened to be surrounded by God-fearing officers including Lt-General Montgomery who assembled his officers and men and said “Let us ask the Lord, mighty in battle, to give us the victory” ,Simultaneously, a National day of Prayer was called By Archbishop William Temple in Britain when a high proportion of the population participated. Augmenting these prayers, Rees Howells, principal of the Bible College of Wales in Swansea, had his students pray around the clock until he was able to declare in faith that “Hitler will never take Egypt – neither Alexandria nor Cairo will fall” The clarity with which the Holy Spirit orchestrated prayer and assurance at that time is truly remarkable. Shame on us for not acknowledging God’s significant answer to out prayers at that perilous time when Churchill wrote in his History of the Second World War: “It may almost be said’ Before Alamein we never had a victory. After Alamein we never had a defeat” Let us be careful to recognise whenever God answers our prayers and to thank and praise Him for it. David Dare.

1st Lym Valley Scout Group (Uplyme and Lyme Regis) I can’t believe we are halfway through the Autumn term already, although we have done so much in such a short space of time. The Beavers have been to Pets at home and are working towards their Animal carers badge, and we have also done a new badge called Money Skills which was fun. This month we will be looking at Remembrance Day, Diwali and the safety badge. The cubs have had a busy start to the term with a visit to Tree Tops pushing themselves out of their comfort zone on the high ropes and well-done Rocco for completing it. This month the Cubs are concentrating on the communicator and Disability awareness badge, then going wild with Nerf wars. Scouts have been out on the water coming second in the District Raft race and trying out our new mega SUPS which was great fun. The leaders are now getting qualifications to be able to provide this activity so should be good to go next year. The Scouts have also been doing the Mechanics Badge and looked like they had fun. So, if you are at the side of the road with a puncture, I’m sure a Scout could help you. At the end of last month, the Scouts will have done JOTI which is Jamboree on the Internet where they get the chance to speak to scouts across the world over the internet and do activities. We’ll let you know how it went next month. This month they are doing the Fire Safety Badge with the help of Lyme Regis Fire Brigade and preparing for the Entertainers badge. The Explorers have been doing self-defence and backwoods cooking -not at the same time I hope! though and interesting spin on things. They will also be having a go at Water Polo. A few of the Explorers are also Young Leaders with the other sections and do DofE which gives them skills in teaching and interacting with younger people and communication. All of this is Skills for Life which is the phrase the Scout association is pushing out to the media about what we are about. We are not a Youth Club which some people think we are, we are a Youth Organisation helping and preparing the young to become responsible and caring adults and giving them skills and experiences that some may never get from anywhere else. If you think you may be able to help in anyway, to set these youngsters up for life and adventure please let us know. 12 NEW SCHOOL UPDATE from The Bestic Trust In recent months the trustees of the Bestic Trust have carried out an assessment of the entire ‘new school’ project and the best way it can be approached having regard to the fact that there is little likelihood of obtaining government funding in the current climate. Rather than wait for change a decision has been taken to progress the project incrementally, given that we have funds in hand and any action now will benefit both school and the community as a whole. With advice it has been decided the project shall be progressed in discrete elements, Car Park, Multi Use Games Area (MUGA), School Garden, School Infrastructure, School Hall and Ancillary Space, Classrooms and Breakout Spaces. We anticipate that we shall group these elements into three or four Phases. To facilitate the phased delivery our consultants have submitted a refreshed application to EDDC with various updated reports and a supplementary statement. On their advice the trustees have decided to take forward four elements of the project, including two that have the greatest benefit to the community. These are construction of the car park and of the MUGA. These will both be available to the whole community throughout the year. The other two elements are the School Garden and School Infrastructure. This is Phase 1 which we aim to have completed by September 2024. We have raised sufficient funding to complete three elements of Phase 1 and we will be going out to tender for that work early in the New Year, but we shall need your help and support to finance the work in the School Garden element if we are to have it available to the children. To explain our thinking here. We have received an increasing number of requests to use the school field for parking for village events, Church events, weddings, funerals etc and working in conjunction with the Village Hall through our joint agreement the new car park will provide a safe environment for all village events and at school drop off and pick up times. The car park will not be fenced off specifically for school in any way and will have low level lighting and clear instructions for traffic flow in the same way as any other public car park. Taken with the Parish Council policy to secure a 20mph speed limit from the Cook’s Mead roundabout to the Black Dog and Devon Highways approval to install a Zebra crossing at the crossing point subject to finance, road safety in the village will be greatly improved. It is also our intention that the car park will incorporate electric vehicle charging points. The MUGA will support 5 a-side football, netball, cricket and a whole range of fitness regimes and will be available for use by the community outside school hours at a small cost. Alongside the above works we will be taking forward the landscaping and planting plan to enhance the whole site and increase the provision of wildlife habitats and provide a calm, supportive environment for children and teaching staff of the school.
Eco Corner: Over the next few months, we are going to consider how we can live greener lives. This month as we head towards the Winter we are thinking about keeping warm 1. Make sure you close your curtains when it gets dark to stop heat escaping. 2. Get draB proof to stop losing heat. Professional draught-proofing of windows, doors and blocking cracks in floors and skirGng boards can cost around £200, but can save around £25 a year on energy bills. DIY draught proofing can be much cheaper. Installing a chimney draught excluder could save around £15 a year as well. www.energysavingtrust.org.uk/home-energy-efficiency/energysaving-quick-wins 3. Make sure your hot water tank is insulated with a thick jacket. It will save you lots of money not to menGon reducing your carbon emissions. 4. Has your loB got loads of insulaGon? It’s one of the cheapest and easiest ways to save energy and will pay for itself in hardly any Gme. We will also shortly be initiating a campaign to raise funds for Phase 2 School Hall and Ancillary Space which comprises the ground floor area for school assemblies, worship, indoor physical recreation and dining with a supporting kitchen/servery facility and toilets. It will provide its own energy and be net zero carbon in both its construction and future operating. We have received one or two offers of help with fundraising but we invite parents and members of the community with fundraising or PR experience, or simply enthusiasm and a desire to be involved, to join us to take this exciting project forward. We already have the support of Triodos Bank and once we can establish an income stream from charging points, the games area and possibly visitor parking in the holiday season, together with some major fundraising activity we are confident that firm plans can be made for Phase 2, the construction of the ground floor area of the school building. 19 Figh%ng for a Healthy River Lim The River Lim Action group was set up with a simple aim: to get the river cleaned up within three years. Older residents may remember when the river was brimming with wildlife – fish, eels, water weed, kingfishers. Now we still get the odd sighting of otter poo, and a few hardy trout and dippers. But the overall ecological health of the river is suffering from pollution – mainly sewage but also some from farming - invasive species and engineering unfriendly to wildlife. The clean up aim is ambitious given the 2,000 plus hours of sewage discharge reported for 2022 and all the un-permitted waste going into the river through misconnections and damaged infrastructure. But the volunteers involved in the group are passionate about tracking down the causes of pollution and getting them sorted. The group has three active monitoring teams – water quality, E.Coli and invertebrates. The Environment Agency has also been monitoring the river for bacteria and South West Water has placed continuous water quality monitors which you can see along the river bank. These paint a mixed picture with one consistent feature – high levels of bacteria at various points including at Springhead Road, above the Sewage Treatment Works. The group’s first success was to secure the clean up of two pipes in the Woodmead Road bridge area which were discharging without a permit. The smells, sewage fungus and visible pollution disappeared but we continue to monitor that the water entering the river is as clean as it should be. Further down the river there are still other pipes spilling, dripping and leaking sewage. The group gathers evidence, reports the pollution and as a result South West Water sends its vans to deal with the problems. But the underlying causes are deep rooted and historic – going back to Victorian times or even earlier. The whole creaking system which serves Uplyme and Lyme Regis is overdue for an overhaul. And thanks to our pressure, South West Water has promised £20m on a fast track to upgrade the whole system. The River Lim Action group has co-ordinated a campaign to get Church Beach redesignated as a bathing beach. As the beach is most affected by the river water quality, this has helped secure more monitoring and resources. The result will be known by the end of April next year. Public reporting of sights or smells of pollution are very powerful at galvanising action. We thank everyone who has taken the time to report as it really makes a difference. Here are the reporting details: https://turnlymegreen.co.uk/report-water-pollution/ If you want to learn more about the work of the group please come along to our “Fighting for a Healthy River Lim” event at Uplyme Village Hall on Friday 8th December. The main speaker is Harry Barton, former CEO of the Devon Wildlife Trust with others from the River Lim Action group. Event starts at 7.30 – refreshments on sale. We hope to see you there and thanks to all who have supported the work so far.

Yes, we could raise our hire charges but this would make the Hall unaffordable for many groups and the committee is always conscious it is a community hall. Some figures from the accounts y.e. March 23 … Our events raised just over £4,000 which help to keep the accounts on the right side of breakeven. The repair figure above doesn’t include annual servicing or heating & work was mainly carried out by volunteers who didn’t charge for their labour. So … Come along and enjoy our events – the Christmas Fayre and Duck Race are lots of fun. Just watching the Fowler Family, friends and helpers stumbling around in the river while ducks try to escape is prime entertainment. Buy a duck and cheer it on as it eddies down the Lym at midday! 22 Uplyme Parish Council c/o Uplyme Village Hall, Lyme Road, Uplyme, Lyme Regis DT7 3UY Tel: 07413 947067 Email: [email protected] Website: www.uplymeparishcouncil.org Parish News – October 2023 Looking ahead to 2024. Calling all public-spirited residents! The community litterpick due to take place on Sunday 15th October 2023 has had to be postponed, due to a lack of volunteers. However, we will be reconvening the litter pick before the end of 2023, so if you are interested in taking part in the future, all equipment will be provided. Please let the Clerk, Zishan, know (on the contact details above) if you would like to be added to the list of community champions, helping to keep our lovely village clean and tidy. Emergency Planning We all hope that the Winter is going to be uneventful, but with the widely-publicised floods in East Devon in recent months, it’s always better to be prepared. Luckily, we are fortunate to have some wonderful willing volunteers who will come out in all weathers to keep the parish and its residents safe. Headed by the Vice Chair of the Council, Cllr. Andy Turner, we have volunteers who will clear debris in gullies to alleviating flooding, prepare sandbags as flood defences, grit the lanes to keep pedestrians safe and to keep traffic moving on roads other than the main ones and help clear up any after effect of extreme weather events. If you would like to help in any way with winter preparations or to volunteer to help out should there be an emergency in the parish, then we would love to hear from you – just get in contact using the details above. Budget Setting This is the time of year that the Council starts looking forward to the projects and work that they want to achieve on your behalf in the new financial year. The Finance Committee start planning to spend the money you pay in the council tax allocated to the parish council, which is then ratified by the Council after their input around December/January. The Council would sincerely like parishioner involvement in this process. Why don’t you join the Finance Committee at their meeting due to take place at 7.15pm on Wednesday 22nd November in the village hall to tell the Members about your ideas for the parish and how they can help to implement them?
