I must confess I’m a fan of Mr Bean.
Some time ago, I was watching an
episode where he climbed up a high
diving board, decided against it, but
couldn’t come back down because of
the queue behind him. It was an
exact re-run of a situation I once
found myself in. I’d taken a party of
children to a swimming pool and I
was persuaded by them, against my better judgement, to dive off the high
board. I guess I wanted to prove that ‘Sir’ was totally fearless. But when I got
to the top of the ladder, my fear of heights kicked in and I decided to back
out. Unfortunately, there was a queue behind me of my own children, still
urging me on. In the end, I closed my eyes and jumped, accompanied by
loud cheers. I’ve never been near high board since!

Jesus teaches us that knowing him allays our fears. Firstly, we must look into
our own hearts and name our fears. That means being honest with
ourselves, but we can often feel reluctant to do that, because it’s so painful.
Secondly, we must accept that we can’t always be in control. Jesus tells us
that being fearful is not a place to stay or a way to live. It’s not the life he
lived, nor is it the one he offers us. Knowing him is not an insurance against
life’s problems. But it does mean that being in relationship with him is more
important than being in control. It changes our perspective, from us being in
control of our own life to living for the sake of God and others.
If we are to build a trusting relationship with Jesus, we need to create space
and stillness in our lives. Mother Teresa was once asked what words she
used when she prayed. She replied, ‘I don’t speak much to God, I just listen
to him’. Then she was asked, ‘What does God say?’. ‘Oh He just listens too’.
Those who trust Jesus feel more contented, thankful and connected with
people and nature. They lose interest in judging others and let things
happen, rather than make them happen. Most importantly, their worries don’t
hold them back!
Roger Grose

Hello everybody and to this August edition of the
magazine.
I hope the mid July heat wave was not too difficult
for you, I know many who relished the heat and the
sun, and were to be found swimming in Lyme Regis.
Others of us (me included) who spent a few days in a pool of perspiration and
with swollen ankles! Maybe people will start to believe that we are experiencing a
climate change!
The Village Fete and the Horticultural Show were a huge success. Thank you to
both groups who contribute financially to the running of this magazine, your dona-
tions are very much appreciated.
The front Cover of this magazine is a tiny tribute to Neil Pullinger. He loved
sunflowers and the colour yellow, and behind the sunflower on the cover you can
see the garden area that has been dedicated to him. The yellow peg in the picture
was found when the area to be planted was being dug over! His service of thanks-
giving on 17th June was a packed affair in the church, and it was a wonderful
tribute to see so many people there and how much he meant to the Village.
Enjoy your summer, and do please remember to promote your charitable or local
group events in the magazine.

THANK YOU SO MUCH!

Uplyme Church would like to thank the generous, anonymous donation
left in the church post box in early July. As requested, the funds have been
passed onto charities that help some of the suffering children around the
world. It has been evenly split between three charities -
The Ekisa Project works with special needs children in Uganda who are
often abandoned by their families.
The Busuga Trust construct wells to keep children healthy and to benefit
girls who often have to walk long distanced to collect water.
Homestart Exeter, East & Mid Devon gives children of struggling families
a better start in life.

Dear Friends
JOURNEYS OF FAITH
Frank Dare's first convert to the Christian faith was
Ned Simwanza. Ned had an inkling of things
Christian from his father in southern Tanganyika but
drought and poverty set him walking three hundred
miles north in search of better things. He arrived in
Tabora in great want and was drawn to a fledgling
Salvation Army Service. There, for the first time, he
heard of God's love for him personally and he received some practical
care. By the Holy spirit of God he became spiritually "Born Again" with
personal assurance of his eternal safety in God.
This came about through God exercising His principle that transcends all
mankind - that  anyone can be saved from sin through believing in the
Jesus Christ's death, cross and shed blood on our behalf. This belief
being granted by God's gracious gift of faith and not by our works lest we
should boast about it. God makes this promise in Ephesians chapter 2
verses 8-10.
Ned's faith grew strong. He exercised his own gifts in assisting the Dare's
work among the blind, lepers and prisoners of Tabora. Eventually, he
became a candidate for training as a Salvation Army Officer and went on
to lead outlying centres of service until his retirement.
David.

News from King George’s Field.

It has been great to see our wonderful field used so well in recent months. There was a
lovely atmosphere and some interestingly decorated gazebos for the Queen’s Jubilee
party despite the weather. Thanks to Wendy and her team of organisers. This was followed
by a very successful Uplyme Fete - Pete Hackett and his team did a terrific job - there was
such a buzz on the field. A big thank you to all involved - especially for their substantial
donation of £500 towards the upkeep and improvements of the field and its facilities. More
recently the Horticultural Society were responsible for an excellent summer show - another
great team effort. Added to this the Uplyme Pre-School and Mrs Ethelston’s school have
enjoyed their Sports Days and there have been some really exciting cricket matches.
The members of the Croquet club have been enjoying both friendly games and some
matches against other clubs. The tennis court is being well used and remember booking
and payment is easy and can be accessed via the Lawn Tennis Association website at
https://clubspark.lta.org.uk/rally/ or just put Uplyme Tennis into an internet search
engine such as google. The gate is secured with a combination lock and the code is sent
each time the court is booked. The current cost is £7 per hour to use the court, which is
excellent value for money.

Please can you help?

We are very keen to find a new trustee to replace Neil Pullinger. Our group of six trustees
meet bi-monthly, usually on a Monday evening for about an hour. If you feel you would be
interested please contact me and I can give your more details and chat through what is
involved. It would be really good to have a new input into our team!

National Allotment Week - 9th to 15th August

What creepy crawlies are lurking in your allotment? This year, National Allotment
Week has teamed up with the Big Bug Survey to try and find out.
The theme of the week is Bugs, Bees and Broccoli, and the aim is to acknowl-
edge the importance of gardening with nature in mind.
As the National Allotment Society (NAS) says, allotments are “a complex web of
plants, micro-organisms, fungi, insects and animals that not only produces food
but also supports eco-system services such as pollination and offers a refuge for
wildlife in urban areas.”
And Bugslife points out: “Bugs are so important to the healthy functioning of our
allotments. We tend to focus on the ‘pests’ and ignore all the great work the other
bugs are doing for us. They are pollinating our fruit and veg, controlling our pests
and improving our soil.”
So if you have an allotment, why not take the survey, and so contribute to the
monitoring of allotments and bugs? Go to: https://www.nsalg.org.uk/news-
events-campaigns/national-allotments-week/
