LIFE STORIES On holiday in Amsterdam some years ago, we were sitting outside a café, when, to our great surprise, along came friends who live around the corner from us in Seaton. It’s not often that coincidences like that happen. Most people we pass by each day are unknown to us, but if you were to stop and speak to them, each would have a life story to tell. Perhaps they had been through great traumas in their lives, or experienced the premature loss of someone near and dear to them. They may have met someone famous, or had an achievement recognised nationally. It’s important that all those we know nothing about should always be approached without pre-judgement, that is, without prejudice. While each of us has a story to tell, we are helped by other people’s stories too. These stories give meaning to life, they inspire memories, create visions and fire imaginations. As we look back at the past year, it’s inescapable that the problems of the world, poverty and war with all its consequences will sadly have created many new and heart-breaking stories. It’s tempting to avoid grim news reports, yet if we do, we will fail to empathise with those in great need. All are our neighbours. Jesus, of course, was the great storyteller. Those he told challenged, disturbed and changed people. They taught lessons for life which were unforgettable. He clearly understood his audience and his parables used examples which they would understand. In John 15, for example, we read ‘I am the vine, you are the branches’. They would have understood how vines are a symbol of community, how one little grape wouldn’t make much difference, but a whole vineyard of grapes certainly would. To build a community, everyone needed to play their part, to recognise others as their neighbours. John Lennon once said, ‘Life is what happens when we’re making other plans’. That’s why, particularly at the start of a new year, it’s worth taking some time to reflect on our own stories before life passes us by. What lessons have we learned about life? Has it made a difference to us? Have it made a difference to others? It’s worth reflecting on these points: God won’t ask you the size of your house. But he will ask you how many you welcomed into it. God won’t ask how many friends you had in your life. But he will ask you how much of a friend you are to other people. God won’t ask which neighbourhood you lived in. But he will ask you how you treated your neighbours, no matter where you lived. The commandments can be summed up as, ‘Love God and love your neighbour as yourself’. To follow this means reflecting on your own life story, listening to others’ stories - and working to make a difference. Roger Grose
Happy New Year from the Parish Magazine! I do hope you had a good Christmas and are looking forward to 2024? It’s been a busy time for the church over the Christmas period, but you wouldn’t expect anything else. The services (those we have had as this goes to print) have been very well attended and we’ve seen lots of new faces we hope will return during this next year. Have you made any resolutions? Mine is to try to be more healthy and get a bit fitter! I cannot be the person that says they are going to be ‘vegan and run a marathon” as I know I would fail at that, so just aiming to improve my lifestyle a bit by walking a bit more and maybe cutting out a bit of sugar. It’s a short magazine this month....... But still fantastic ;-) Ed Shining Stars Playgroup is back on 5th January Lots of fun for all under 5’s Friday’s 10am to 11:30am in term time at the Scout Hut, Rhode Lane, Uplyme DT7 3TX Please bring an adult Free parking Suggested donation of £1 per child For more details e-mail: [email protected] visit: www.uplymechurch.org.uk/worship-3-2/shining-stars/ or: Facebook page: Shining Stars Playgroup Ride-ons - Duplo - Play kitchen - Baby area - Story time - Train set Wendy house - Snacks - Dressing up clothes - Crafts - & So much more A simple way to help cut your risk of diabetes A recent study published in the British Journal of Sports Medicine has found that your risk of diabetes falls for every kilometre per hour faster that you walk on average. Put simply, if you walk at a pace of 3km per hour (1.86 mph) you may lower your risk of developing Type 2 diabetes by at least 15 per cent. If you can walk briskly at a speed of 5km to 6km an hour (3.1 to 3.7mph) than you may cut the risk by 24 per cent. A lack of exercise and being overweight are among the factors that increase the risk of diabetes as someone gets older. www.parishpump.co.uk

Journeys of Faith NEW YEAR, NEW NATURE. In this column last month, we rejoiced in the assurance of forgiveness and eternal life with God. Having received the gift of faith to personally believe this, we can be in for some surprising challenges. We may ask “How come I am being tempted to sin more than before I accepted Christ as my Lord and Saviour?” Well, the bible explains that having received the life of Christ within, we find “we do not fight against flesh and blood but against powers and principalities in heavenly places.” In other words, the devil resents our changing from his preoccupations with worldly, materialistic matters. Instead, Jesus helps us to become more like himself. John Wesley, founder of the Methodists in the eighteenth century records how his experience of this transition first involved springs of God’s love and peace. This was empowered by The Holy Spirit. He fed his new found faith in reading the good news of Christ’s saving power in the bible. The serene joy and irresistible gladness which so characterised his life through all his astonishing labours, came gradually – even as the opening of a flower. Let’s be encouraged to seek such strengthening of our own relationship with Jesus this New Year. David Dare. These experiences of Wesley are drawn from the 1938 publication “England before and after Wesley” by J. Wesley Bready.
Knit and Chatter The Knit and Chatter group is intended to be both a group for knitting, crocheting and so on, but equally a gentle social meeting open to everyone. The group has some wonderfully talented knitters who are able to untangle knotty pattern problems or who can teach the basics and lend support. As a failed infant school knitter .... too many dropped stitches and yet amazingly too many loops still on the needles, I have loved learning a new skill and enjoy the friendly chatter. What do we knit? There are no set rules. We knit personal designs as well as for charity. There is a ready supply of tea, coffee and biscuits! It's a relaxed atmosphere and you would be most welcome to come and join us. Uplyme Church on Wednesday afternoons from 2 till 4 Drop in any time. 11 ‘Tis the season to be Jolly’ – and what better place to begin the Festive Season than at Uplyme Church! Our Christmas Craft Fayre got off to a cracking start on the first Saturday in December, with a steady stream of visitors both local and from afar. They were treated to a variety of local crafts, including wood turning, jewellery, felting, hair accessories, needlework, copper-ware, and floral decorations. The creche provided Children's activities so that families could browse freely, catch up with friends, or enjoy the ever-popular refreshments. Uplyme Church would like to thank all those people who supported our Christmas event. With a packed church, we raised nearly £900 which goes towards maintaining the fabric of this historic landmark, as well as providing much needed funding for the wealth of Community activities which support the needs of both young and old. Friends of Lyme Regis Philpot Museum You are welcome to attend our illustrated talks in the Woodmead Hall, Lyme Regis. Entrance fees are £2 for members and £4 for visitors. On Thursday 1st February at 2.30 pm. ‘The Battle of Britain: Role of RAF Exeter’ by Brian Fernley. We look at the involvement of the Exeter based squadrons: the tragedy of friendly fire incidents, the memoirs of TSR2 test pilot Roland Beaumont and the experience of an Australian pilot. 12 1st Lym Valley Scout Group (Uplyme and Lyme Regis) Happy New Year to you all! We start the New Year afresh looking forward to what this year will bring. Five Beavers have moved up to Cubs and we will have had new Beavers starting. At the end of last year, we congratulated Marcus on achieving his Bronze Award which is a great achievement before he moved onto cubs. This year we will carrying on planning our Trip to France in August for the Scouts and Explorers. We are going to the Ardeche and will be doing lots of outdoor activities including a two-day kayak down the Ardeche river which is great fun. We won’t be there for the Olympics which is probably a good thing as it will be busy on the roads. This is only a short piece this month as we will not have had our planning meetings by the time the Parish News goes to print. But judging by what the Scouts told us they want to do this year it looks like it might be a busy one with camps, survival camps, artists badge, communication badge, and maybe a shooting camp on Dartmoor. The Beavers will no doubt have another sleepover at the hut and may have a sports day with Seaton and Beer beavers. We will try and do a cub camp this year but will need support from parents to help on the camp and at weekly meetings. We are not a Youth Club which some people think we are, we are a Youth Organisation helping and preparing the young to become responsible and caring adults and giving them skills and experiences that some may never get from anywhere else. If you think you may be able to help in anyway, to set these youngsters up for life and adventure please let us know. Note for your diary the Powder Monkeys ESSU are doing another Christmas Tree collection on the 6th January 2024. If you want them to collect your tree after Christmas, please go onto our website for more information. 16 Uplyme Parish Council c/o Uplyme Village Hall, Lyme Road, Uplyme, Lyme Regis DT7 3UY Tel: 07413 947067 Email: [email protected] Website: www.uplymeparishcouncil.org After a, hopefully restful, festive season we welcome the parish into a New Year! Spotlighting our volunteers! We are extremely lucky in Uplyme to have a community who are invested in self-help. Our ‘Community Champions’ range from those people who are willing to consistently pick up litter or clear vegetation on a footpath/pavement to those who come out en masse to help put up the Christmas lights or who offer their electricity to power them. Including, but not exclusively: - Resilience volunteers (during adverse weather or snow and ice) who work to keep the roads and walkways safe and keep us all moving - Clearance volunteers who clear vegetation/moss on pavements or outdoor stairways or who litter pick in their local area - Tree wardens who keep the Council advised on trees in poor health or diseased and which may present a danger to walkers or vehicles and for their invaluable knowledge on planning applications - Christmas volunteers from organising purchase of the displays, maintenance of the lights, putting trees and lights up and powering them - Maintenance volunteers who will drop everything to put their hand to any issues or emergencies in the parish - And lastly, to our wonderful Councillors, who dedicate their time and skills on a regular basis to protect the heritage and green spaces, to ensure local people have access to housing, to maintain the assets paid for by you, to work to improve road and pedestrian safety and generally who work hard to make Uplyme the best it can be We won’t name these lovely folk individually - who want where they live to be the best it can be - for fear of embarrassing them, but to all those who help when help is needed, we would like to say a heartfelt THANK YOU for making Uplyme a thriving community. You know who you all are!
The beautiful Christmas lights display 2023 River Lim On the note of volunteers, we would like to call out for some assistance with pulling up the invasive Himalayan balsam on the banks of the River Lim during Summer 2024. To offer your help, please contact [email protected] Hedges If you receive a letter from the Parish Council about a hedge/tree or vegetation from your property being cut back, please do your best to carry out the work in short order. As a landowner where your land abuts a public right of way or a highway you have legal obligations to ensure your hedge etc. does not obstruct or infringe upon the passage of people or cars. Please take the time to ensure that hedges, trees and vegetation are in good, safe order and that ditches alongside your property are kept clear, as it is a criminal offence to obstruct a public right of way or highway, and you may be found liable. We want everyone, whether pedestrian or vehicle, to be able to navigate around safely. Chairman: Cllr. C James Vice Chairman: Cllr. A. Turner Cllrs: P. Hackett, P. Oakley, C. Pratt, D. Ostler, W. 19 Happy New Year from Uplyme Village Hall. Shortest day gone & the sun is coming back … hurrah! The Christmas trees and lights have helped the village sparkle – thank you to all the amazing volunteers who braved the elements in November putting them up. We are so lucky in Uplyme with a beautiful, active Village Hall, the warm, welcoming Talbot Arms, a well-stocked, friendly Uplyme Stores & Garage - all contributing to keeping Uplyme a proper village.
