2 The Bishop of Exeter 1Qth May 2023 Dear Friends, I am writing to let you know that I will be retiring as Bishop of Exeter on 30th September. I have been a bishop for fifteen years, the last nine of which have been spent here in Devon as Bishop of Exeter. During that time, I have come to know and to love this county and its wonderful people. It is a diocese rich in history, of whose churches and communities I have become immensely proud. And all set in a landscape that has been a constant source of joy to me. In August I shall be 69 and the time has come to pass on the baton of leadership. My years in Devon have been among the happiest and most fulfilling of my life. Throughout my time here, I have been supported by superb colleagues, both in the senior staff and my personal staff in the Gatehouse to whom I am especially indebted. The process for choosing my successor will begin in the autumn and during the vacancy-in-see my colleague, Bishop Jackie Searle, the Bishop of Crediton, will serve as Acting Bishop of Exeter. In addition to my role as Bishop of Exeter, I have a number of national and regional responsibilities. It is my intention, therefore, gradually to disengage from public engagements from mid-July onwards so that I can both literally and metaphorically clear my desk. I want to make a good handover to whomever the Lord sends as the 71st Bishop of Exeter. I will conclude my time in office at a special service in the Cathedral in the autumn when I will ceremonially hand back to the safe-keeping of the Dean the Diocesan crozier until my successor is installed. That is likely to be in the late Spring of next year. I do hope many of you will be able to come to the Cathedral for my farewell. Over the years I have joked with our retired clergy that the word 'retirement' should really be spelt 're-tyrement' for the next leg in life's journey. I will be moving to Wiltshire and, although I will be laying down my pastoral staff, I hope to continue to serve God and his Church to the best of my ability, albeit from the back row. It only remains for me to thank you for your kindness, patience, loyalty and good humour. You have taught me so much about what it means to be a Christian. It has been the privilege of my life to serve you as your bishop. With my thanks for our partnership in the Gospel, The Right Reverend Robert Atwell, Bishop of Exeter
3 A very warm welcome to the June edition of the Parish News. I hope you all had a good May? The Coronation celebrations on the Village Playing Field were wonderful. Well done and congratulations to all those involved in setting things up and those that went along. It was so good to see so many people from all areas of village life together and enjoying themselves. A special mention must go to Wendy Gardener at the Talbot for all the hard work and organising she did. “Diolch yn fawr Wendy am eich cariad at ein pentref” Now we look forward to the Village Fete on Saturday 11th June. I’m sure this is going to be another splendid day and we keep our fingers crossed for some good weather on the day. Hearty congratulations to Hannah Pullinger too. What a fantastic effort in running the London Marathon in memory of her Dad Neil, and raising around £5000 for the Weldmar Hospice. You can read her story on the back cover. There is real concern that the mobile Library will cease to operate soon. Devon County Council are looking at ways of saving money, and it is hardly used when it comes to the Village Hall Carpark. It’s due into Uplyme on 1st & 29th of this month. “Use it or lose it” as the saying goes! Have a good month, and catch you in July! Ed Any idea who the lovely lady behind the hat is? Drop me an email :-)

10 Fun at the Church Spring Fayre! The sun shone, the chefs BBQ’d and the people came. Quotes: “Such a lovely atmosphere and great to see all those families.” “I particularly enjoyed watching all those groups of friends enjoying their refreshments over a good ole’ natter!” “the church was buzzing and watching the paper aeroplanes fly off from the top of the tower was awesome!” I would like to thank all those who helped to make over 130 paper aeroplanes - all of which took flight from the church tower, launched by our Vicar, Nicky. The wind was kind, blowing away from the church roof and over towards the school……they all took flight and the winning one, which went over the hedge next to the school, was made by Phil at the Black Dog, decorated by Serene, one of our youngest, from Shining Stars. 13 Uplyme Pre-school News The weather has warmed up a little so we’ve been making the most of playing outside in our new play area which the children love. We went on a walk to the viaduct to spot the first signs of spring, we got a bit muddy but that was half the fun!! We’ve been busy over the last few weeks doing lots of craft activities for the King’s Coronation and we’re really looking forward to summer.
14 Martin Whitehead The one thing I have learnt after talking to Martin Whitehead is that he is very far from being a standard image of a Chartered Accountant. Born in 1947 in Wilmslow, Cheshire he was educated at the prestigious Roman Catholic boarding school, Stoneyhurst College. He described the education there as excellent but robust. In 1966 having decided that a University education was not for him he obtained a job in an Accountancy firm in Manchester and then in 1968 he moved to Cobham in Surrey. He continued his studies there and qualified as a Chartered Accountant in 1973. With 2 colleagues he set up a firm in London and there his good fortune continued. As the firm expanded a new employee was hired, a young lady from Australia called Patricia, whom he married in 1977. Just before their marriage they had moved in 1976 to Sidmouth where he joined an Accountancy Firm in Exeter. The firm merged with the Internationally known firm Ernst and Young, where he was a partner for 10 years, before branching out on his own. He moved to Uplyme in 1981 and that year the Whitehead family saw the arrival of a daughter Alice, followed in 1983 by a son Toby. Martin says that branching out with his own firm opened up new opportunities in so many various areas. He became Chairman of Business Enterprise Exeter which managed 40 business units and he also acted as a Consultant for the Arts Council. For the latter he tried to set up a scheme within the Arts Council where Arts organisations would be responsible for growing their finances to make them more viable with less reliance on funding. Dealing with the Arts Council proved to be not easy and Martin was disappointed in the reaction he received in his attempts to bring greater clarity and stability to the finances of some brilliant, smaller arts organisations. Not everything however was doom and gloom. One of the more challenging professional roles that he took on was acting in Criminal Defence work. Here he was required by the Court to Forensically analyse the financial figures and records of defendants. This would either help prove their innocence or prove to the Prosecution that offences for which a person or firm was accused were not as bad as it might appear. This was indeed fascinating work. Another side of Martins work was at the University of Exeter where he lectured on the financial element of Business Studies for the MBA course. This was a rewarding area of his experience.
15 What about Uplyme during all this time ? This is where his commitment to our Village is so impressive. During the time of the Fund raising for the New Village Hall he was on the Fund Raising Committee and Patricia his wife became Treasurer of the Village Hall for 12 years. He became a Governor of Mrs Ethelstones School and had then been asked by the Reverend Stuart Worth , at that time Vicar of Uplyme, to become Chairman. It had been at a difficult time for the School which eventually led to the appointment of Roger Grose as Head Teacher. In 2017 he became Chairman of the Bestic Trust and has been an essential lead in the task to move the school to the new site after negotiating the purchase of the land from Mr Masters. If that was not enough he also chairs the newly named Uplyme Community Fund, details of which can be found elsewhere in this magazine. It would be impossible not to be impressed with what he does and his commitment to Uplyme. But what does he see for the future ? With grandchildren of his own he believes that a broad, caring and supportive education is the right of every child and we need to widen the opportunities for children and young people within our local community. The new Mrs Ethelstones School will hopefully be the flagship of our Village and for that we have to give our grateful thanks to people like Martin Whitehead. Yes indeed a very different image from that of a standard Chartered Accountant. Martin Wells Uplyme Community Fund The aim of the Uplyme Community Fund is to be able to provide financial help to overcome hardship and to enable activities to take place for the benefit and well being for individuals or groups in the village of Uplyme. It has a dedicated fund specifically to support people suffering as a result of the cost of living crisis. 16 Eco Corner: Over the next few months we are going to consider how we can live a greener lives. This month we are thinking about holidays. Genesis 2:2-3 “ By the seventh day God completed His work which He had done, and He rested on the seventh day from all His work which He had done. Then God blessed the seventh day and sanctified it, because in it He rested from all His work which God had created and made.” 1. Going for a day out to the beach? Take a bag in your pocket and pick up any litter you see. 2. Planning your day out or holiday journey? Use public transport if you can to reduce your carbon emissions. Travelling by train or ferry to Europe can be part of the adventure. 3. If you are planning to fly for your holiday make sure you carbon offset the carbon you generate from your flight eg with Climate Stewards www.climatestewards.org/ 4. Holiday waste? When you are away try to take as much care to save energy, recycle, prevent food waste as you would at home. Dog versus cat Thinking I might get a dog I’m not sure what to get A dog to roam and guard the house Or one solely as a pet. Something fierce that bares its teeth And I don’t mean a smile Though if I’d got one of those He’d make you run a mile. Something very small and sweet That would really make me smile Or one that loves those long, long walks Mile after mile after mile. A whippet that runs like the wind A wolfhound the size of a pony Something like that & I’d lose some weight I’d have an hourglass figure – if only! A dog that keeps me company It may sit on my lap And when we sit down after lunch We both could have a nap. I’m still not sure what dog to get I’ll pull a name out of a hat Or to settle this once for all I’ll get myself a cat.!! Diana Hunt

20 OK Dinghy World Championship 2023 22nd June to 30th June 2023 – Lyme Regis, United Kingdom Look out for the OK dinghy World Championships taking place in Lyme Regis at the end of June. Over 140 boats have entered and the seafront will be buzzing with sailors from all over the world. One of the main sponsors is Ovington Boats owned by Chris Turner our local sailing World Champion. Chris recently won the Flying Fifteen Worlds in Freemantle Australia. You can read of their achievement below. Flying Fifteen World Championship After no sailing was possible on the penultimate day or the regatta only one race was sailed on the final day of the Flying Fifteen World Championship at Fremantle. With an unassailable lead Graham Vials and Chris Turner (GBR) won their unprecedented fifth World Championship in the class. Vials and Turner from Derwent Reservoir / Lyme Regis SC won 5 of the 10 world championship races and with drops of a 4th and 8th they could not be beaten. The final race of the series was started at 1030 hrs on a sultry Saturday morning in a fading Easterly breeze which started at around 10 - 11 knots and by the end of the two lap windward / leeward course with a final upwind to the finish line, had dropped to a soft 6 knots. Nick Jerwood and Brad Sheridan from South of Perth YC/ Fremantle SC led the final race from start to finish extending on every leg. The Australian pair did everything possible to close the points gap on Floaty McFloat Face (Vials / Turner) but ended up just three points shy of the British boat.
21 Uplyme Parish Council c/o Uplyme Village Hall, Lyme Road, Uplyme, Lyme Regis DT7 3UY Tel: 07413 947067 Email: [email protected] Website: www.uplymeparishcouncil.org Parish News – June 2023 Calling all Community Champions! Serving your Community Local councils, like that in Uplyme, work towards improving community well-being and providing better services. Their activities fall into three main categories: representing the local community; delivering services to meet local needs; striving to improve quality of life and community well-being. Uplyme Parish Council has two vacancies for Councillors and is urging enthusiastic and engaged members of the community who want to make a long-lasting change, have innovative ideas or are just passionate about where they live to stand as councillors for the opportunity to make a real difference. The work Uplyme Parish Council does is exciting and rewarding. An integral part of a councillor's role is engaging with local people, groups, and businesses to determine their needs, making decisions on the services and projects the council should take forward, and getting involved to ensure services meet the community's needs. Should you wish to find out more about the role from Councillors themselves, you can hear actual Councillors views by visiting the National Association of Local Councils website (www.NALC.gov.uk) and visiting their #MakeaChange webpage. The Parish Council Chair, Cllr. Chris James, has been a Councillor for 8 years and Chairman for 7 years and says: “If you care about your local community and wish to make a difference, becoming a Parish Councillor does not necessarily require a vast amount of your time. However it does allow you to have a say in matters such as provision of affordable housing, planning, highways and the village environment to name but a few issues. It may be the lowest level of “Government” but it is the one closest to the community. Uplyme Parish Council operates in a non-political manner and it does not matter which political party you support, it is never an issue because we all work on behalf of the people of the parish.” If you would like to talk to one of our Councillors about the role specifically in Uplyme Parish Council, they would be more than happy to have a chat with you. You can find their contact details on our website (www.uplymparishcouncil.org) or contact the Clerk, Zishan, on the telephone number/email address above. You are also very welcome to attend any of the Council meetings, which are all open to the public, to see the Councillors in action and find out more about the role. They are held on the second Wednesday of every month except August when there is a recess. You can find out about forthcoming meetings and read the agenda a few days before on the Uplyme Parish Council website (www.uplymparishcouncil.org) and there is also a schedule of the forthcoming meetings for 2023-24 there. It’s UPLYME FÊTE, a proper old-fashioned village event held on the King George V Field and in Uplyme Hall. There will be lots to see, watch, join in with, eat and drink – with a slow amble round everything stopping to chat and have a laugh with everyone you know. It's not too late to buy raffle tickets (just £1 with special offer of a book of 5 for £5 ) and a First Prize of £150 cash. Other prizes include various vouchers from local businesses, Rib Rides, Talbot Carvery (mmmm, Steve does a cracking roast), Yoga with Sam, Fishing trip, Vic’s Fish’n’Chips (again, mmmm) … I can’t name all our generous sponsors, so if I’ve missed you out – THANK YOU – and we do know who you are. The raffle is in aid of Village Hall funds – also the proceeds from the cream teas, coffee & cakes prepared by super-Sarah Foxwell and her team of happy helpers. Pete Hackett, our very own Mr Chairman of the Village Hall committee is also Mr Chief Kingpin of the Fete, sorting, arranging and organising his hard working team, while smiling quietly as he gets things done. Thank you, Pete and your fragrant band of volunteers. Remember, that car parking will be controlled to be available for stall holders, helpers and fête-goers. Some weekends, we will be coning off the car park to reserve it for hirers who have booked big events and to discourage parking by random dog walkers, families strolling into Lyme or hikers going for a pleasant amble in the countryside. July: The ULRHS Summer Show & Produce Fair is on Saturday 8th July with violas as the theme. On Tuesday 11th July at 7pm the Village Hall will be having its AGM – mark the date in your diary to come along and join in the committee chat. You don’t need to be on the committee to offer help – just have fun with us and get involved!

26 miles done………. London Marathon 2023 - WOW, what an experience! It’s hard to put in to words how it felt. The atmosphere was electric the whole way round; there was never a quiet moment with the constant shouting, cheering and music from all directions. It was such an overwhelming feeling when I reached Buckingham Palace and knew I was almost there! I couldn’t believe I had actually done it - a marathon! I was one of 48,634 finishers on the day. The dark, cold, rainy training runs over winter had all been worth it. I know my Dad would be so proud of my achievement and even more so of the money I’ve raised for such an incredible charity who helped him and our whole family at such a difficult time. In total, I raised £4,995 (including Gift Aid) for Weldmar Hospicecare. Thank you so much to everyone who kindly donated, and to those who sent such supportive messages both before and after the marathon - I couldn’t have done it without you! Hannah x
