2 As we begin September and move towards Autumn, I hope that you’ve all had some time during these summer months for retreat, refreshment, re-connection with places and people, and rest. I wonder how you feel about this coming month? For many this is a time of new beginnings – especially for families and all involved in education as schools restart. It is a busy month for many as the tempo goes up a gear. In our Axe Valley Mission Community Churches over the summer, we’ve been continuing with our worship and enjoyed lovely concerts, as well as some beautiful weddings! There was also time to take nine teenagers to Kenya, on a life-changing trip to work with the Red Tribe charity. It has been a busy time. But there is also space, if planned well, to meet with families and friends and to rest. As September comes upon us, we say farewell to Clive, our Team Rector who is retiring after six years in the role. That will mean us pulling together to ensure we can continue to serve you in our parishes while we go through the process of appointing a new Team Rector. A kind word of encouragement when you see us around would be gratefully received! Or a Mars Bar always works wonders!! As I start to think about all our fantastic schools, I am grateful to those involved with ‘Open the Book,’ who will be preparing to re-engage with the great job they do, of going into our schools and telling Bible stories in a fun way. Places of learning are such inspiring places to be… perhaps that’s why I love being in church too – alongside people who worship and take time to think about the larger questions of life, death and everything in-between. The Church of England website offers many prayer resources here: https://www.churchofengland.org/prayer-and-worship/topical-prayers The prayer below is one they suggest we can use for the first day back at work or school. I also think it is a really good one to use every day! O God, the strength of my life, make known your will for me in this place: help me to discover friends among strangers, to meet opportunities and challenges eagerly, and to do my daily tasks in your name. Give me strength to overcome my worries, and preserve me in your safekeeping, through Jesus Christ our Lord. With my thoughts and prayers, Rev Nicky

3 As I write this in the middle of August, my mind is inextricably drawn towards Autumn as the weather has been pretty ropey for the past week or two. I do feel for the children who have been on holiday, and ever since they broke up it’s not been the kindest of days. Why is it my recollections of Summer as a child is weeks and weeks of warm sunny days without a spot of rain, I’d be out on my bike riding all over the place....... Rose tinted spectacles I expect! Despite the weather it’s been really busy with tourists and visitors - It’s almost impossible to park in town during the day - bringing much needed custom to the area and a bit of a boost to our economy. Do come along to one of the Harvest services at Uplyme church. There will be a great choice over the Sundays in September. Chances to join us for fellowship and food and also to hear the Festival Choir lead some of the worship. On the 17th in the evening there will be a Service with Battle of Britain day in mind. Then suddenly we will definitely be in Autumn and planning for Halloween and Christmas.............. There, I’ve done it! I’ve mentioned the “C” word. That’s it, I’m off for a lay down and to think of a suitable punishment for my self............. or should I put my tree up?!!!! Enjoy the last remnants of SUMMER! Ed Shining Stars re-opens after the Summer holidays on Friday 8th September. Join us from 10am any Friday in term time for fun, refreshments stories & songs For more details e-mail: [email protected] visit: www.uplymechurch.org.uk/worship-3-2/shining-stars/ or: Facebook page: Shining Stars Playgroup For under 5’s & their parents or carers at the Scout Hut, Rhode Lane, Uplyme DT7 3TX Suggested donation of £1 per child Free parking

5 Journeys of Faith The day when Nazmi met God. In 1974, The Bible College of Wales principal Mr Samuel, visited me one evening and asked me to share my double room with, a refugee who had just arrived from Turkey with little English. It turned out that Nazmi was actually Kurdish and lived by the Turkish border in Iraq with his Roman Catholic mother and Moslem father. It appears that Nazmi's parents nominal approach to their different religions left him confused but untroubled until he met an American Christian in a cafe who gave him a Turkish Christian Bible in which he underlined Christ’s words in John chapter 6v45 “I tell you the truth, he who believes has everlasting life.” Nazmi received a reprimand from his father when he showed this to his parents. He went into his bedroom, threw the Bible at the wall and it fell open on his bed at this passage. In his frustration, Nazmi fell on his knees and prayed that he would wait until God showed him the truth. Nazmi told me what happened next: “I found myself in a deep valley, threatened by a lion who I instinctively knew was Satan. I fended him off with a stout wooden staff. As I backed away up some stairs behind me to a level place, the lion followed but suddenly cowered and I turned to see Jesus Christ with a multitude of people in front of a glorious city. Jesus beckoned me in our gentle eastern way with fingers down and bid me sit before him. He told me he was sending me back to serve him on Earth then I woke up in my room. I was so excited and shared my dream with my parents. My father was furious and threw me out of our home. My mother found me and said I could return but must never mention Jesus again. I found the American and we reasoned that I would be in danger of my life if my father put my story about. The American then arranged and financed my escape, first to help in a Christian bookshop in Istanbul that had connections with the Bible College of Wales, then he moved me on to the college itself.” Nazmi had a clear premonition that he would eventually return to his homeland and give his life for the Lord. He did return to Istanbul and we kept in touch for a while. He married then, sadly, we lost touch. David Dare

8 1st Lym Valley Scout Group (Uplyme and Lyme Regis) We have all had a good break over the Summer Holidays and looking forward to starting the new term. Just before the holidays I received the Medal of Merit which is given to leaders as recognition for the time and work put into scouting and I was very proud to receive it. Thea and Josh have returned in one piece from a very eventful, and much reported by the National media, World Scout Jamboree in South Korea. I will get them to write a piece for next month’s Parish News. We have plenty planned through all the Sections this Month. The Beavers will be visiting Pets at home as part of their Animal Carer’s badge. The Cubs are going to great heights at Tree Tops in Charmouth, and the Scouts will be looking at the Car Mechanics badge and shooting. (Parents don’t let them near your cars hide those spanners!!eekkk). This month we are hosting the District Raft Race at Lyme Regis Harbour. Scout groups from around East Devon District will enter a raft, build it on the beach and then 6 scouts will steer it round a course. The winner is the one that gets across the finish line in one piece – not one bit at a time! We last had this competition before Covid and are looking forward to it happening again. If you are around on Sunday 10th September, we will be down on Victoria Beach at 10am, do come down and support us and have a laugh. Also, later this month we are having our AGM at the Scout Hut on Wednesday 20th September at 6.30pm. This is a good time for us to go through what the Group is up to; it’s plans and what it needs to move on to provide better experiences for all the children. Everyone is welcome and we usually have a few eats and drinks. Please let me know if you would like to come for numbers. As we head into a new term for some a new school, it is a time for new beginnings. As our group continues to grow, we do need more help to keep our success going: if you would like to volunteer at the Scout Group as a leader, tea maker, behind the scenes, maintenance or fundraising, please do not hesitate to contact us. If you have a child who would like to join, please go our website and fill in the joining enquiry form and we will get back to you – there is a waiting list for all sections, including Explorers. 13 Parish ‘at very heart’ of God’s mission, General Synod hears The General Synod has recently backed the parish as key to the spreading of the message of the Christian faith, in a debate where the local church was described as ‘at the very heart’ of God’s mission. Members were told that the parish system is central to the Church of England’s Vision for growth, in a debate led by Revd Canon Kate Wharton, from the Diocese of Liverpool. “The parish system exists not so that we can be territorial and protective of ‘our patch’ and work only in our own silos, but so that we can ensure that every single soul in the land is held within a system in which they matter and can be known.” The General Synod members voted to welcome the Church’s commitment to increasing the numbers of ordinands, as well as an increasing emphasis on lay ministry and the expansion of Licenced Lay Ministers. “This isn’t about survival, somehow bringing in enough people and enough cash to ensure we can keep going," Canon Wharton said. “Rather, this is about a community of believers coming together to dream dreams with God about what might be possible in His perfect plan for their future.” Synod hears update on Prayers of Love and Faith as concentrated work phase begins Concentrated drafting work to prepare new pastoral guidance and other material needed for the Prayers of Love and Faith to come into use, is now underway. General Synod members recently spent time scrutinising the work which has taken place since the landmark debate in February that welcomed proposals to enable same-sex couples to come to church following a civil marriage or civil partnership, for prayers of dedication, thanksgiving and for God’s blessing on the two people. Since February a draft set of texts known as Prayers of Love and Faith have been further refined, and work to develop new pastoral guidance for the Church of England and proposals on pastoral reassurance have been underway. Members of the Steering Group overseeing that work, led by the Bishop of London, Sarah Mullally, and the Bishop of Truro, Philip Mounstephen, provided an update on progress since February and took questions. www.parishpump.co.uk

We really hope some of you lovely villagers will offer help or we won’t be able to go ahead, leaving the people of Uplyme and the Crusaders footballers sadly starving … contact [email protected] for details. As I write this at the end of July, applications are coming in for the new manager who should be in place on 1st September. There’s a lot to learn taking on the role, so please be patient as the handover happens. PHONE NUMBER to contact the Manager: 07396 704980. The email address remains the same [email protected] Thank you, Claire for looking after our Village Hall so well. UPCOMING EVENTS: Saturday 16th September – BIG BREAKFAST from 8.30am Saturday 14th October – JUMBLE SALE & COFFEE MORNING Saturday 25th November – CHRISTMAS FAYRE, COFFEE MORNING & DUCK RACE . A further £150 has also been donated anonymously – you know who you are, thank you! Uplyme Village Hall needs a couple of Trustees Trustees are vital to the continuation of the hall. Without enough trustees, the Hall cannot continue and Uplyme would lose a vital community facility. Being a trustee is not onerous, with the Trustees meeting only four times a year to review what’s happened, discuss finances and future plans. Uplyme Village Hall is a CIO (Charitable Incorporated Organisation) with up to eight trustees who have overall responsibility for the Hall – being a CIO means personal liability is limited. If you would like to find out more or become a Trustee of the Hall, please talk to Chair Pete Hackett, Secretary Margaret Wiscombe or any committee member. To contact the committee, email [email protected]

Local cancer support charity, Axminster and Lyme Cancer Support have announced they are setting up a full-time location in the grounds of Axminster Hospital. Based in a self-contained building and space next to the hospital will allow the charity to expand the services offered to anyone affected by any cancer within the Axminster and Lyme Regis area. Mary Kahn, founder of the charity said:” We are delighted to announce that ALCS will have a permanent home. This has been made possible by the amazing fund-raising across the local community and a couple of very generous donors. ‘Thank you’ to all who have contributed and supported us”. 19 WORDSEARCH For some reason, the Church gives thanks for angels in September. The 29th is the feast day of Michael and All Angels. Since the days of Genesis, these messengers of God have been sent many times to intervene for the good in human affairs. Angels guarded the Garden of Eden, they led Lot away from Gomorrah, they helped Gideon, they stopped Balaam, they closed the mouths of lions for Daniel, and, most important, the archangel Gabriel was sent to tell Mary that she would mother the Messiah. Angels sat in the empty tomb of Jesus, and told of His Resurrection. Revelation is teaming with angels, sent on all sorts of missions by God in the last times. Today, many Christians in the world’s hot spots report having had angels help them when in mortal danger.
