Of Heirs and Grace… King Charles’ coronation this month publicly celebrates the inheritance of his new roles as “King, Head of the Commonwealth, Defender of the Faith, and Sovereign of the Most Noble Order of the Garter” among others. Rewriting my will recently, I have been thinking about inheritance, and what might be passed on. Sadly, I have no royal titles, but I do have some things I value and, beyond the material, many memories which I hope will live on. Writing a will reveals where our passions lie: people leave millions to cats, dogs, donkeys, chimps, hens…. even total strangers and the odd church! Paul writes in his letter to the Roman church that God has chosen us – his followers – to be his heirs. We are the very closest of family: the children and heirs of God and so, co-heirs with Christ! As we have just heard again the Easter accounts of Jesus’ earthly death and resurrection, I have been thinking about what Jesus left behind. Materially, Jesus left little. At the cross: garments (torn and taken). At the tomb: grave clothes (loaned and left behind); no human body…. But Spiritually, Jesus leaves us with everything we could ever need or wish for: for this life and beyond. As Christ’s followers we stand to inherit all that God has to offer: a new life, given by grace, should we choose to accept. “Now if we are (God’s) children, then we are heirs—heirs of God and coheirs with Christ’. Romans 8:17 Rev Shuna

Made up of over 70 exhibition boards it attracted 1000 people in 3 days. We are now able to show the exhibition on the Research Team’s website to bring back memories for those who saw it in 2008 and introduce it to a new audience of those who have moved into Uplyme and area during the last few years. 4 Uplyme Help at Hand - cares There is an epidemic of loneliness – we can all help! We urgently need some new volunteers. Many of our original visitors are now well into their 80s. If you are recently retired, recently moved into the area or just love brightening the day for someone on their own who cannot get out, we would love to hear from you. Research reminds us that short-term bouts of loneliness is a common occurrence for many people at some point in their lives. These types of feelings are typically brief and not necessarily serious or life changing. However, when feelings of loneliness and isolation worsen and continue longterm, there may be more serious consequences to health, such as depression, poor self-esteem and feelings of worthlessness. We can all help address this in our community. Are you aware of any of your neighbours who are lonely? Tell us about them General Enquiries: Anne – 01297 444799 Marilyn – 07885 859946 Transport: Fred– 01297 445647 Dave– 01297 444799 At Help at Hand we love to meet new people. 6 Journeys of Faith Angels. According to Young’s Analytical Concordance, there are some two hundred and fifty references to angels in our Christian bible not least those involved at Christ’s empty tomb. “So what” you may ask. Well, it gets kind of personal when such references say they can sometimes help us out when we are in trouble. For example, Psalm 34v7 encourages us with the promise that “The angel of the Lord encamps around those who fear him, and he delivers them” and Psalm 92v11 assures us “For he will command his angels concerning you to guard you in all your ways.” A sceptic might say “Pull the other one” but let me tell you that my wife Rosemary and I received angelic help when holidaying on the island of Gozo off Malta. Our hotel room key comprised a flimsy plastic card which electrically operated the room door lock. We met ‘our angel’ after enjoying a coffee at a village square market. We exited the square along a narrow, cobbled lane towards the main town bus station. The lane was totally enclosed on both sides by what appeared to be the rear walls of attached, warehouse buildings. I had slipped our ‘key’ into my shirt pocket together with a pair of sun glasses. Some distance down the lane, I lifted my glasses out of my shirt pocket not realising that I had also, flipped the plastic key onto the lane cobbles. A voice behind us said in English, “Excuse me sir, is this yours?” It was our plastic key. In less time than it takes to tell you, I turned amazed to Rosemary, then to thank the young man involved but, in those seconds of time, he had simply disappeared, vanished. There was no departing back of him to see and no side exits out of the lane. All we could do was thank the Lord for his angel. David Dare. Annual Parochial Church Meeting will take place in Uplyme Church on Thursday 4th May 7.00pm All are Welcome

Pu-r-r-r-r-fect. I’d like to own a little pet Something soft and fluffy I’d like to get a kitten But it’ll probably be a puppy. ‘Cos a kitten will grow to an adult cat and spend all day asleep, He’ll curl up and cuddle on my lap Then wake up just to eat. He will be very playful, and probably make me laugh But it’s better to remember, I won’t be its owner It’ll treat me like I’m staff. 12 Forget "Borscht N Tears" this was "Borscht & Pancakes” Uplyme Church style ... For those of us living and working in London in the 1980's, perhaps the trendy Eastern European/Ukrainian restaurant named "Borscht N Tears", a short walk from Harrods was our only experience of this type of cuisine. Fast forwarding 35 years, I found myself, last weekend sitting around a table with family and friends in Uplyme Church enjoying the most delicious Borscht and Pancakes. Borscht rises above it's unpromising ingredients to become a delicious concoction with lingering spices and steeped vegetables. I confess I knew very little about Ukrainian history and culture but after listening to Serhii and Rita last Saturday evening I have a real appreciation of their beautiful country, it's heritage and traditions. We arrived on Saturday evening to a peal of Church bells cheerily ringing out over the village whilst the yellow and blue of the Ukrainian flag fluttered from the top of the church tower. Serhii, our Ukrainian host, began his presentation by showing the audience a film of the countryside and cities of Ukraine its different terrains and regions. We listened to the up-rising Ukrainian national anthem, saw pictures of national dress, watched some very energetic dancing and learnt about Ukrainian inventions (the postcode system, who knew?!), literature and writers. We were shown pictures of the Ukrainian plane "Mriya" meaning "dream" which was the largest cargo plane ever made, standing 6 storeys high. Sadly it was destroyed by enemy drones early in 2022 but President Zelensky is determined it will be rebuilt one day. Let's hope the "dream" will become reality. Serhii was particularly proud of his country's achievements over the years in the Eurovision Song Contest - no less than 3 winners over the last 20 years. Then it was time to enjoy the various Borscht soups that were on offer, all from Serhii’s Mothers traditional recipes. We helped ourselves to an
array of bubbling hotpots served with sour cream and bread followed by delicious familiar pancakes served with a variety of jams . The second half of the presentation was tinged with sadness as Serhii began introducing us to the politics of his country. We heard all about past presidents, political parties, the strains & stresses over past years and the build up of unrest and eventual conflict with Russia since the beginning of the 21st century. The photographs became more somber as he showed us war ravaged images of churches, hospitals, schools, supermarkets and apartment buildings that had been struck by the enemy, many known personally to Serhii . On a more hopeful note he showed us a timeline presentation of how Ukraine is fighting back to reclaim key territories by successful counter-offensives . Rita ended the presentation with a personal account of her family and home by sharing photographs of her beloved family, who remain in rural Ukraine . We learnt afterwards that she was returning to the Ukraine the next day so we wished her well on her journey. So that we could end on a positive note Serhii showed us photos of himself, Rita and Marat enjoying themselves in their new temporary home in England. Marat, the 11 year old son of Serhii ,who is at Woodroffe School and speaks English perfectly, had helped Serhii with his presentation and it was this joint positive determination to adjust to their challenges that bodes well as they face their still uncertain future. I would like to thank Rita and Serhii for overcoming their language difficulties and presenting to our community such an informative and powerful message. On our table we had 3 young adults who all came away with an added sense of reality to the impact of war on a personal level which can sometimes become diluted on the television. We commented afterwards that it would be unthinkable for us to have to face the prospect of war, of leaving your family and home at a moments notice to settle in an unfamiliar land for an unknown period, let alone having to learn a new language. Rita, Serhii and Marat are fine examples of people overcoming adversity, putting down new roots & remaining optimistic for 2023. We wish them well. "Dyakuyu" to you both. Samantha Pennington
David Jones Sometimes when a friend is no longer with you the memory of them remains etched in your mind. Such a person was David Jones who sadly died last month. Why was he special? David was not only a ‘doer’ but he was also one of the most honest men I have ever met. David was born in 1945 in Bedfordshire and was the eldest of 4 brothers. He was exceptionally bright and gained a scholarship to Bedford School at the age of 11 where he excelled at sport, especially cricket which he continued to play throughout his life. Moving onto University was then not always an opportunity available to many , so after having taken his ‘A’ levels David decided to join the Midland Bank. It was here that he met his wife Elizabeth and they started their family of four children, Richard, Kate, Emma and Ben living in the small village of Clapham, two miles north of Bedford. David excelled at the Midland Bank eventually rising to become a Bank Manager and being awarded the Regional Bank Manager Prize of the Year in 1988. A real achievement. This was to be unfortunately the highlight of his career because he was then forced to retire because of illness problems. That is only half of the story, because Uplyme in particular became central to the rest of his life and even before his retirement he knew Uplyme well. His family recall being packed every year into a 6 seater Peugeot car and staying at the Holiday home they rented in a flat at Waterside in Mill Lane , Uplyme . On David’s retirement David and Elizabeth discovered that the Holiday flat was for sale and they purchased it, cementing their relationship with the village to which they had become so fond. Full Retirement was not on the schedule for David and moving permanently to Uplyme was if he had now been restarted the opportunity to start life again. He joined the cricket club, both as a player and then as an umpire and then as a Trustee. He took on the mantle, with Elizabeth, of leading walks for the U3A.
Sadly Elizabeth died after a long illness, having written a book of walks around Uplyme, a book which David followed later doing his Community walks. This bereavement could have halted a lesser man in their stride but David found and needed new opportunities ‘to do’. He became an active member of Help at Hand, he organised shopping for those who were less fortunate physically as well as finding time to do a thousand other things. Uplyme Church had , since his arrival , been one of the main centres of his life and he devoted himself to doing what he could , to assist the smooth running of the Church. His main role in the latter years was being the Parochial Church Council Secretary ,where he was quite remarkable in his efficiency and attention to detail. During Covid he was the organiser of the biweekly Sunday telephone service enabling the older members of the Parish to remain involved in worship when the Church was closed. A service which still takes place to this day. I mentioned at the start that I thought that David was a truly honest man and it was for one of many reasons in particular. At a meeting some 7 years ago of the monthly Men’s Breakfast Club which is associated with Uplyme Church, David gave a talk about his life and career. He then revealed to us that he had been required to leave the Midland Bank because he suffered from severe depression. It was the first time that most of us had ever heard someone being so honest about the subject of depression, which is now thankfully widely acknowledged . It left us silent and sadder at the end of his talk and our respect for him was even greater than before. How brave but how David. That was the secret of David Jones . He was open, giving , thought always of others and that’s why he will be sorely missed. A man like David Charles Jones only comes rarely into ones life. Martin Wells Do good, be blessed When we do good, even when others are doing wrong – God will bless us. That does not mean God will always bless us in material ways, although at times this is the case. But God will always bless you spiritually for your faithfulness. If you have committed your life to God, let your life reflect His love for those around you. “Let your light shine before men, that they may see your good deeds and praise your Father in heaven.” (Matthew 5:16). By your daily actions and your daily words to friends, colleagues and family, you can be a witness to those you meet every day, and God will honour your witness for Him.
Rogation Sunday -14th May In the Anglican Church, Rogation is celebrated on the fifth Sunday after Easter. Rogation means an asking of God - for blessing on the seed and land for the year ahead. It is appropriate in any emergency, war, plague, drought or foul weather. The practice began with the Romans, who invoked the help of the gods Terminus and Ambarvalia. In those days a crowd moved in procession around the cornfields, singing and dancing, sacrificing animals, and driving away Winter with sticks. They wanted to rid the cornfields of evil. In about 465 the Western world was suffering from earthquake, storm and epidemic. So Mamertius, Bishop of Vienne, aware of the popular pagan custom, ordered that prayers should be said in the ruined or neglected fields on the days leading up to Ascension. With his decision, ‘beating the bounds’ became a Christian ceremonial. Rogation-tide arrived in England early in the eighth century and became a fixed and perennial asking for help of the Christian God. On Rogation-tide, a little party would set out to trace the boundaries of the parish. At the head marched the bishop or the priest, with a minor official bearing a Cross, and after them the people of the parish, with schoolboys and their master trailing along. Most of them held slender wands of willow. At certain points along the route - at well-known landmarks like a bridge or stile or ancient tree, the Cross halted, the party gathered about the priest, and a litany or rogation is said, imploring God to send seasonable wealth, keep the corn and roots and boughs in good health, and bring them to an ample harvest. At some point beer and cheese would be waiting. In the days when maps were neither common nor accurate, there was much to be said for ‘beating the bounds.’ It was still very common as late as the reign of Queen Victoria. Certainly, parish boundaries rarely came into dispute, for everyone knew them. Where did Jesus go at the Ascension? -18th May In Salvador Dali’s picture of Jesus’ ascension all you can see are his feet! As we celebrate the event this month, it prompts the question ‘where did Jesus go?’ Peter says Jesus ‘has gone into heaven and is at God’s right hand’ (1 Peter 3:22). However, the New Testament tells us three things about what Jesus is doing at the Father’s side. At Pentecost Peter said that Jesus is ‘exalted to the right hand of God, He has received from the Father the promised Holy Spirit and has poured out what you now see and hear…“The Lord said to my Lord: ‘Sit at my right hand”’ (Acts 2: 33-4). Peter is affirming Jesus’ position of authority and power at the heart of the universe. By pouring out the gift of the Holy Spirit upon us, Jesus gives us a foretaste of the life of heaven ie eternal life, forgiveness, healing, release and God’s provision for our lives.
When Stephen, the first Christian martyr, was being stoned to death by the Jewish authorities he points out, ‘I see heaven open and the Son of Man standing at the right hand of God.’ (Acts 7:56). Our experience of heaven is only ever partial, as we live with the reality of suffering and setbacks. However, Jesus is still on the throne! We are called to trust him daily. The Bible also tells us that ‘Christ Jesus who died….is interceding for us.’ (Romans 8:34, cf Hebrews 7:25). Even when we don’t know how to pray, we have the assurance that Jesus is already praying for us! He knows our needs even better than we do ourselves, so when we feel condemned or defeated in our Christian lives, we have somebody on our side! The Ascension reminds us that the risen Jesus lives in the immediate presence of God, and both transcends and embraces our present experience. This truth lies at the heart of the up language used to describe the event. ‘Heaven relates to earth tangentially so that the One who is in heaven can be present simultaneously anywhere and everywhere on earth: the ascension therefore means that Jesus is available, accessible, without people having to travel to a particular spot on the earth to find Him.’ (Tom Wright). Fire of Pentecost -28th May "You shall receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon you and you will be witnesses to me in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria and to the ends of the earth" Acts 1:8 We all get tired and battle weary sometimes. The disciples of Jesus had just been through a three-year long roller coaster adventure with Jesus that had culminated in His death, resurrection and ascension into heaven. The range of emotions would have been hugely taxing in the days leading up to Pentecost, as they remembered Jesus weeping in the garden of Gethsemane, betrayed by Judas, brutally beaten and crucified, and then dead and buried. Then there had been the shock and awe of finding out that He was alive again! But then He had left them again, to return to His Father. By the time the day of Pentecost arrived, the disciples would indeed have welcomed some fresh spiritual fire! For us today, many of us have felt emotionally drained with the uncertainties caused by Covid 19, the worry of prices rising at an alarming rate, and now the pain and uncertainty of what will happen in the war in Ukraine. So, what better day to pray for fresh spiritual fire for each of us? As we celebrate the outpouring of the Holy Spirit and birth of the Church, let us thank God that He will never leave us or forsake us. www.parishpump.org.uk
1st Lym Valley Scout Group (Uplyme and Lyme Regis) This is going to be a really exciting month with lots going on with the Coronation of King Charles II at the beginning of the month. This is significant for the Scouts as they make their promises to the Queen – now King. We had our first Investiture last term where the Scouts made their promise to the King. Last month the Group will have celebrated St Georges Day by having a parade and service at Uplyme Church followed by a BBQ at the hut and then Joshua’s infamous Uplyme Monopoly. Photos to follow next month. The Scouts and Explorers who are going to the Ardeche next year helped with bag packing at Tesco’s Seaton, raising money to help fund the trip. They all did very well and we had a good time chatting to the customers. The Beavers will be focussing on being outdoors this month working towards their Outdoor Challenge badge. The Cubs have 2 new leaders Vicky and Fi, previously Beaver Leaders with us, and they have planned a great programme for the term involving nature, hikes, Archery and Shooting. The Scouts will have completed the Cyclist Badge by having a Cycling expedition from Exeter HQ to Exmouth and back along the cycle path. We have done this before a good few years ago and it was great fun. Will update you next month on what happened. The Powder Monkeys ESSU will continue their programme with Joshua and Thea, who are going to the World Scout Jamboree in South Korea in August. This is the last term before they go and it is starting to feel very real. I will get them both to write a short piece about how they are feeling and what they are most looking forward to before they go. The Group will be at the May Fete at Anning Road on the 8th May and will be part of the Scout Big Help Out. We will have a stall showing what we do and giving information for those who would like to volunteer not just as leaders but also behind the scenes. Do come and say hello and have a chat. Enjoy the Coronation weekend lets all have a great celebration for our new King!! Yours in Scouting Karen Yelland Beaver and Scout Leader www.lymvalleyscouts.org.uk Instagram 1stlymvalley

What a weekend for Uplyme to enjoy! Saturday 6th May, it’s the Coronation of KC3, Sunday 7th May, Coronation Party and a bank holiday on Monday 8th. The floor has been beautifully refurbished – so shiny and smooth, mmmm. If you are a hall user, please help look after the hall by not tap dancing in stiletto heels, not scraping chairs, tables & other heavy items across the floor. Please wipe your feet when coming in and please do not bring any animals into the hall, except for guide dogs. Dogs are loved family members and our best friends – but with so many different user groups, the Hall is not a space for pets. Car parking: Thank you to everyone who makes a donation when they use the Hall car park but aren’t hiring the hall. The funds are very welcome and help maintain the car park. The ten spaces on the KGF side belong to the playing field, so you should park there if you are playing tennis, basket ball or using the playground, etc. This is not a public car park but a private car park and primarily for people who hire the hall. If you aren’t using the Hall, be considerate and avoid parking in front & rear car parks when there is an event like a sale, coffee morning, large party or wedding. During busy periods, cones & a noticeboard will be used to reserve the car park for hirers during some events and to deter casual parking. UPLYME FÊTE is on Saturday 10th June and uses the Hall, so parking will be controlled to be available for stall holders, helpers and fête-goers. I don’t know how many people noticed the “For Sale” sign outside the Village Hall during our Coffee morning on April 1st? The Lyme Luggers played a cheery selection of songs to create a wonderful atmosphere in spite of the sale board lurking menacingly outside … Finally, a big thank you to Dave Ostler who has done so much to help the hall and village over the years, digging ditches, putting up lights and more. You don’t need to be on the committee to offer help – just have fun with us and get involved! HALL PARKING
Uplyme Parish Council c/o Uplyme Village Hall, Lyme Road, Uplyme, Lyme Regis DT7 3UY Tel: 07413 947067 Email: [email protected] Website: www.uplymeparishcouncil.org Parish News – May 2023 Fresh beginnings…. Coronation Celebrations The Council, like the entire country, are looking forward to celebrating the momentous coronation of King Charles III on Saturday 6th May and the village party that will follow on the Sunday. The Council would like to thank Wendy Gardner and the team who have made this event possible by making all of the necessary arrangements. The Council are pleased to have granted £500 to help with the festivities. It is sure to be a very memorable and enjoyable day on the parish calendar – and congratulations to His Majesty on his accession to the throne. If you have an event planned in Uplyme which would benefit from extra publicity, get in contact with the Clerk who will be happy to promote it on the Council website. Elections Whilst the elections for the Trinity District Councillor is still to take place on 4th May, we are pleased to announce that Uplyme Parish Council’s members have been decided for the next 4 years. Where either the exact number, or less than the requisite number, of Councillors are nominated, the nominees are deemed to be elected uncontested. This is the case in Uplyme, where 8 out of the 10 positions have been filled. The Councillors who will volunteer their time to serve the Parish until 2027 are: Paulene Frost Pete Hackett Chris James Paul Oakley Colin Pratt Bill Trundley Andy Turner Claire Wiscombe Thanks to them, and to the outgoing Councillor, for dedicating their time over the past 4 years to the community. However, we still have 2 vacancies for Councillors, and after the 4th May, we will be actively recruiting to fill those positions. So, if you too want to be a community champion, please contact Zishan, the Clerk, to find out more. Cont’d
Stafford Mount Spring has well and truly sprung in Stafford Mount greenspace! As well as the spring blooms, the bird boxes - so ably made by the Cub Scouts of 1st Lym Valley Scouts - have taken pride of place around the gardens, so we are hoping that the nesting birdlife will take up residence soon. Why not pop down to take a look and spend a tranquil moment to see if you can see any wildlife appearing? We are now in desperate need for a garden designer to help us create a groundplan for the site to take it to the next phase. If you have the skills and would like to help, please get in contact so we can create a biodiverse community greenspace that will be a focal point of the parish. Chairman: Cllr. C James Vice Chairman: Cllr. A. Turner Cllrs: P. Hackett, P. Oakley, C. Pratt, D. Ostler, W. Trundley, Mrs P Frost, Mrs C. Wiscombe Eco Corner: Over the next few months we are going to consider how we can live a greener lives in our homes. This month we are in the Utility Room. Mark 9:3 “ and His garments became radiant and exceedingly white, as no launderer on earth can whiten them.” 1. When using a washing machine ensure there is a full load and turn down the temperature. Heating the water to higher temperatures uses more energy. 2. Electric tumble dryers use energy. If it’s a nice day dry your clothes outside. In the winter most drying is done by the wind, so check the forecast for wind days and nights as you can hang washing overnight (as there is no dew in the winter). 3. Irons use a lot of electricity to get hot – only iron clothes that really need it. 4. Cut up old clothes or sheets that you were going to throw out, to use as clothes for cleaning jobs rather than buying new cleaning clothes.
May 2023 The Final Chapter… Back in 2009, a new Member was elected to serve Trinity Ward on East Devon District Council, the far east parishes of Uplyme, Combpyne-Rousdon and Axmouth. The new councillor totally lacked political or local government experience, but wanted to help make a better life for all of us. That councillor was me. Almost 14 years later, it is time to call time. After well over a hundred issues, this will be the final chapter, my last TrinityMatters ward member report… Election 2023 – Two Candidates contest Trinity District Council seat… All 73 seats for the 2023 East Devon District Council cohort will be contested on 4th May. Trinity Ward is contested by. Andy Turner - Conservative Party Candidate Susan Westerman - Liberal Democrats Polling Stations will be open between 7:00am and 10:00pm in Uplyme Village Hall, Peake Hall Rousdon, and Axmouth Village Hall. Don’t forget to take a valid form of ID with you. To vote in this election, you must have been registered to vote by 17th April. To vote by post, your application needed to be received by 5pm on 18th April, however you can appoint someone else (a proxy) to vote on your behalf, up to 5pm on 25th April. What about our three Parish Councils? Whilst all District Council seats will be contested, Parishes and Town Councils across East Devon paint a different picture. Across the whole of East Devon, only 4 parish councils will see an election. 73 are uncontested, as the number of candidates standing is less than the number of councillors each should carry. 6 Parish council and Town council ward elections have received no nominations at all. Elections to these councils will be held within 35 days of Thursday 4th May 2023. None of our three Parish Councils is contested. All go into the new council session with vacancies. Axmouth (9 to be elected, 6 elected, THREE vacancies) BADGER, Ronald B DANIEL, Nigel DROWN, Jane MATHER, Graham WISEMAN, Jay ZISMAN, Paul JR
Combpyne-Rousdon (9 to be elected, 8 elected, ONE vacancy) BRYAN, Suzanne M LITTLER, Lynn M MOORE, Bill PLATTS, Martin J PRESHAW, Glynis SALTER, Kevin J WARNER, Rob WRIGHT, Nicholas Uplyme (10 to be elected, 8 elected, TWO vacancies) FROST, Pauline HACKETT, Pete JAMES, Chris OAKLEY, Paul PRATT, Colin TRUNDLEY, William TURNER, Andrew WISCOMBE, Claire M If any Trinity resident is interested in filling one of the Parish Council vacancies, the Parish Clerk will be able to advise on the approach to be taken. They think it’s all over… In closing, I should like to thank all I have worked with across the district, within East Devon District Council, Parishes and numerous other organisations and individuals, for their help, understanding, time and support. Most importantly however, the residents of Axmouth, Combpyne-Rousdon and Uplyme, who it has been such a great honour to represent. My best wishes to whoever is successfully elected to succeed me. Representative democracy is both rewarding and challenging, often with the need to balance conflicting opinion under sensitive circumstances, yet offers opportunity to positively influence lives and relationships. I have had the opportunity to fill pretty much all senior East Devon District Council Member posts over fourteen years, serving almost a decade in various Cabinet roles, Corporate Services, Economy and Finance, before election by peers to lead Council and ultimately, unanimously, as the first non-aligned Independent Chair of Council. In a final quirk, I will serve a short time as the first non-Member Chair of Council. Local government legislation means Chair remains in post from elections on 4th May, when I cease to be a Councillor, until Annual Council on 24th May, when a new Chair is elected. In this role, I will not have a vote for the new Chair however, in the event of a tied vote (not impossible in current political circumstances) – I would have a casting vote and thereby potentially elect the new Chair – as a non-Member (you couldn’t make it up!). In the famous words of Kenneth Wolstenholme’s BBC TV commentary in the final moments of the 1966 World Cup Final, between England and West Germany …. It is now!
