Many crowns!

With a certain wistfulness, I can still remember my
1977 tin foil/crepe paper reproduction of the Imperial
State Crown, crafted with no small amount of pride for
the Enfield Girl Guides Silver Jubilee Street party! A

shocking forty-five years later, here we are again ☺

This official emblem for The Queen's Platinum Jubilee
above was designed by 19-year old graphic design student Edward Roberts. It
depicts a simple crown; that symbolic headgear which instantly declares the
authority of the one who wears it.
For seventy years that heavy weight of responsibility has been borne with great
dignity by our Queen Elizabeth, who has often referred to the help she has drawn
from her Christian faith, in fulfilling her duty to State and Church.

The British crown is as physically weighty as it is metaphorically so. Describing it
(them, actually, she has two) as "unwieldy", she apparently once said

"You can't look down to read the speech, you have to take the speech up…..Because if
you did, your neck would break - it would fall off”!

In the recent TV news coverage of the state opening of parliament, I was struck
how the presence of the Queen’s crown symbolised her participation, even though
the frailty of her years meant she wasn’t there in person.

The crown is an equally powerful symbol in the Bible.

The Psalms tell us that we humans are not only made by God and ‘crowned with
glory and honour’ (Ps 8: 5); but also that we are redeemed by God and ‘crowned
with steadfast love and mercy’( Psalm 103:4). Amazing.
In Isaiah 61:3, we hear that God longs to bestow on those who mourn ‘a crown of
beauty instead of ashes’. It is a mission which Jesus claims as his own.

This is the good news which Jesus came to declare in the ‘year of the Lord’s favour’ –

the Year of Jubilee. It is scll Jesus’ Good News for us today: the Head that once was

crowned with thorns is crowned with Glory now! AMEN

Welcome to our June edition of the Parish News.
We are heading in to the holiday season and I’m strug-
gling to get this finished before I go away for a week to
sunnier climes! Although to be honest, the weather has
not been bad at all recently here in Uplyme.
We’re approaching the Fete, Fayre and outdoor event season, and this area is
inundated with different things taking place. It’s so good to see everything coming
to life after the past two years.
The Jubilee Celebration on Sunday 5th June 2-5pm, The Church Flower Festival
from 2nd - 5th June, The Village Fete on Saturday 11th June kicks off our summer
in fine style. That’s followed by a community sponsored walk on 18th & Fathers
Day on 19th. To top that month off, it’s my birthday at the end of it (only small
expensive gifts please! :-)

We move straight into the following month with the Horticultural Show on 9th July
and we look forward to seeing what follows this popular event........
I am pleased to say that I have received lots of thanks to pass on to Mark & Mel at
the Village Stores for securing the future of the stores, and I would like to add my
thanks to them as well. I would also like to thank those of you who have donated
towards the magazine costs. You can still contribute, we could do with the help!

Ed
Neil Pullinger

I was so very sad to hear of the death of my dear friend Neil
recently. We often spent many hours together on groups or
committees of one sort or another. I will miss his wise head,
sense of humour and sage advice.
There is to be a Thanksgiving Service for Neil’s life on

Friday June 17th in
Uplyme Church at 12 noon.

Heather, Hannah and Jamie would like you to join them for
this service of celebration for all the things Neil did for us.
Heather says “We’d like as many people as possible to come together at the
church for this service”.
“We would like people to wear bright colours not black, and if possible something
yellow (maybe a yellow buttonhole?) as this was Neil’s favourite colour”
Family flowers only, but Donations to Weldmar Hospicecare would be appreciated by the
family. Donations can be made on the day to Wakelys or via their website:

SPONSORED WALK AROUND UPLYME

Saturday - 18th JUNE
As you may have seen in the May
Parish News I am to lead a
roughly two-hour gentle walk
around the sights of Uplyme
commencing at 10.30am at the
Church and School in Uplyme.
The pace will be gentle and we
will avoid hills where possible.
Among the sights included will be
the Old Mill, The Glen, Hele Lane, Rhode Hill House, White Ley,
Millenium Copse, Cuckoo Lane, Happy Valley, Cannington Viaduct,
Holcombe,Prescott Pinetum,and Woodhouse Fields.
The aim of the walk is to raise funds towards the repair of and restoration
to hourly striking of the church tower clock which could cost up to £4k.
The entrance fee for the walk will be £5 and this can be paid by cheque
payable to “Uplyme P.C.C. and delivered to the postbox at the bottom of
Uplyme Church path with the envelope marked “Sponsored Walk”.
Alternatively you can bring the cash or cheque with you on the day. If you
can not take part in the walk or do not wish to, but are happy to pay a
donation, please do so as above or by post to The Treasurer, Uplyme
Church, Pound Lane, Uplyme, Devon, DT7 3TT also mentioning
Sponsored Walk or on the website as below.
If you are taking part we would be delighted if you could encourage your
family and friends to donate £5 or any other amount to support your
walking and as well as the above methods they can donate on the church
website www.uplymechurch.org.uk and click on the “Donate” button
on the right-hand side of the page and make your donation through the

will try on 25th instead.

St George’s Day Fayre

The BBQ was ready to go…..the coffee was hot and cakes
cut….children’s activities waiting for action…Bottle Tombola tickets stuck
on….Raffle displayed, “how many marshmallows in the jar” counted,
BricaBrac piled high, Chocolate Hoopla looking good and 107 cuddly toys
with parachutes stored at the top of the Church Tower!
Here come the people, here come the families, here come the local
community.
The chefs cooked Flaming Burgers with Avocado and cheese as well -
everyone fed and watered. Now a shout from the top of the Tower! And
down they flew, one by one or clutches of 3 or 4 to be caught by the
children below! 106 made it down successfully but one flew into the
branches of the Yew Tree! What fun, what laughter as those poor cuddly
toys braved the flight!
(The one in the yew tree was rescued) So….thank you one and all for
coming to support such a fun time.

Parish News – May 2022

There is a buzz in the air, and it’s not just from the bees.

Village Celebrations

The Council, like the entire village, are looking forward to celebrating the
momentous 70th anniversary of HM The Queen’s reign on Sunday, 5th June
2022 at the village party. The Council would like to thank Wendy Gardner and
the team who have made this event possible by making all of the necessary
arrangements. The Council are pleased to sponsor the prizes which will be
presented on the day. It is sure to be a very memorable and enjoyable day on
the village calendar – and congratulations to Her Majesty for her long and
dedicated service to the country.
Another event which has been much missed for the past 2 years is the Village
Fete. The Council welcomes the return of this annual event, organised by our
very own (Cllr. with a different hat on) Pete Hackett, amongst many others. This
takes place on Saturday, 11th June this year, and it is sure to be a similarly
jubilant day, celebrating all Uplyme has to offer.
If you have an event planned in Uplyme which would benefit from extra publicity,
get in contact with the Clerk who will be happy to promote it on the Council
website.

22

Public Rights of Way

You’ll see our Councillors out and about on the parish footpaths this month! The
Council are part of the Parish Paths Partnership, a scheme run by Devon
County Council to help parishes maintain the paths in their area. Under the
scheme we are eligible for a certain amount of funding for repairs, and in order
to assess which footpaths need maintenance our Councillors are carrying out a
footpath audit. You can help – if you are out walking and see a fallen sign,
broken stile or overgrown path, take a photo and send it along with details of
where you saw it to the Clerk so it can be added to the list of repairs needed –
let’s keep our footpaths in good order for everyone to enjoy our beautiful
countryside.

Report it Online

Did you know that you can report highways repairs and other issues direct to
Devon County Council (DCC) without going through the Parish Council? This is
quicker and the issue is officially logged on a schedule of works. On the DCC
website, amongst other things, you can report:

- Potholes
- Overgrown vegetation on the highway or pavements
- Hazardous or fallen trees
- Trip hazards
- Defective signage
- Faulty street lights
- Flooding or blocked drains
There are interactive maps to pinpoint the area, and the website accepts
photographs of the issue; after all, a picture paints a thousand words! Go to
www.devon.gov.uk/roadsandtransport/report-a-problem/

Councillor Vacancy

We still have a vacancy for a proactive, dedicated and passionate person to join
the Council and make a difference. If you are interested in helping shape the
future of the village, please contact Zishan, the Parish Clerk, for an informal chat
to find out more about what the role involves.

Mrs Ethelstons Primary School

This week, we were all delighted to learn that Rich Parker- an olympic record breaker- is
coming to our school! On May 20th, he will be visiting us and teaching everyone some
amazing PE and tricks.
‘He is awesome because in 2008 he became the second person ever to land a double 180
degrees backflip on a halfpipe! I can't wait for Rich Parker to come. It's going to be so fun
and it feels surreal to have an Olympian at my school!’ -Jacob, year 6.
In years 4 and 3, they have been focusing on how the Ichthyosaur was created and
ways that they can create tension and atmosphere in their writing. Similarly, year 2 are
learning about narrative and familiar settings whilst in year 5 they have been focusing on
instruction texts. This week, year 6 had their end of primary SATs tests and we all
enjoyed the toast and cake!

The choir are amazed to have been asked to sing a song for the unveiling of the Mary
Anning statue which includes part of Mabel Slade (one of the year 6s) entries and two
other children (Isla and Betsy) from the same class’s statue ideas!
Miss Lyons
