Happy birthday! Many Christians consider the feast of Pentecost to be the birthday of the church. Certainly a huge transformation took place at Pentecost when, as Jesus had promised, the Holy Spirit came upon those early disciples and followers. A group of people who had seen Jesus ascend to heaven were still hiding for fear of the Jewish and Roman authorities - terrified that they would be arrested as followers of Jesus. And yet at Pentecost this group of frightened men and women were transformed into people who boldly proclaimed the gospel, spreading the story of Jesus, his death and resurrection. A bunch of nobodies changed history. Do you ever feel that you are so insignificant that God couldn’t possibly use you? You are not alone! Think of many of the famous people in the Bible. Who was Abraham? What was his significance before God called him? Or Moses? Brought up by an Egyptian princess, he killed a man and went on the run. Not the most likely candidate for use by God you’d think, yet he’s one of the most revered people in Jewish history. Or David – the youngest son who spent his days tending sheep? Or Esther, whose claim to fame is that she won a beauty contest and caught the eye of the king – she saved her people from a plot to have them killed. What did these people and many others have in common? They were called by God and accepted that call. They had no power of their own yet were transformed by the Holy Spirit. You, too, are not insignificant in God’s eyes - He can use you to further the kingdom. All you have to do is to be willing and to allow the Holy Spirit to fill you and empower you. With love and blessings. Ann
Welcome to this May edition of the Parish News. It’s the 20th April as I draw this magazine together I am sat with the blinds down in the blazing sunshine!! What a difference a week makes. The weather has been truly awful up to now and suddenly, although slightly cool, the sun is shining and everybody has begun to smile again. I hope this is the start of some nicer weather for us, we could do with it. I often think May is the time in the magazine where we seem to be plugging all sorts of events as many groups begin contacting us about their Fete’s, Fayre’s, Festivals and Frivolities that they have going on in the next few months. Suddenly all around the area there is something to do and somewhere to go each weekend. If you have some time and can drive, Help@Hand are looking for a few volunteer drivers to help out in the community. Any help you can give would be greatly appreciated. The Village Fete is several weeks away so make sure you have the date in your diary and look out for requests of help. Ed

PARISH NEWS APPEAL Dear Readers The Parish News is solely funded by advertising revenue, donations from the community and groups that wish to support us and we are very grateful for every donation made. Charities, Churches, Schools can all plug their groups and events for free. To many in the parish and wider area it’s the only way they get to see what’s going on! Keeping magazine’s running is not cheap, and we have seen the demise of many local newspapers that find the cost just too much to bear. Your support and donations are vital to keep the magazine going as you can appreciate, we have felt the “cost of living crisis” too! We have great balance between advertising and information and to maintain that, your support is needed. Please donate to keep us going Cheques should be made payable to “Uplyme Church PCC” and dropped into the postbox outside the church or posted to Uplyme Church, Pound Lane, Uplyme, DT7 3TT. Please do not post cash! There is a “contactless card reader” just inside the church (RH side) set to £5 if you want to pop in and make a donation. Tapping twice would be wonderful! Cash donations can be put in the “safe” above the card reader. You can also pay by Bank Transfer: Name Uplyme PCC Sort Cde 40-52-40 Ref: Parish News Acc No 00008163 Or go to the website www.uplymechurch.org.uk & click on “DONATE” Many Thanks for your kind consideration. 7 Journeys of Faith FROM GRIEF TO JOY. We are most fortunate if we have never experienced grief, that is, deep sadness in our life. Whether it be self inflicted by our own foolishness or perhaps through the death of a family member or a friend. It is like a sharp rake being drawn through our very soul. This was the experience of Thomas the disciple of Jesus Christ after witnessing the cruel crucifixion and death of his master and friend Jesus. He felt that he would never again know anyone as perfect and loving towards others in need. When other disciples told Thomas they had seen Jesus resurrected, it was like rubbing salt into his wound. The news caused him to exclaim that he would have to see and feel Christ’s wounds before he would believe such a miracle for himself. Well, he had his bluff called when that precisely happened. Jesus again appeared to his disciples. This time, Thomas was with them. Jesus invited him to feel the wounds of the nails in his hands and feet and the thrust of the spear in his side. Thomas knelt before Jesus and exclaimed “My Lord and my God.” Later Thomas founded the Christian church in south India. Re-reading the brief accounts of Christ’s resurrection in all four Gospels – Matthew, Mark, Luke and John can really uplift ones own faith. Jesus came and paid the penalty for our sins. He invites us to believe and receive His resurrected life into our own hearts through the power of his Holy Spirit. We can encourage our own faith by reading the accounts of Christ’s resurrection in the end verses of the Gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke and John. David Dare.

1st Lym Valley Scout Group (Uplyme and Lyme Regis) The sections have only just started the term and getting into the swing of things. With new Beavers, Cubs and Scouts looking forward to the varied programme planned. This month we start off with the May Fete at Anning Road on the 12th May. We be selling Jolly Jars, Cakes and will have a craft table for the children to enjoy. Remember last year when the weather was really bad but we were lucky enough to transfer to Woodmead Hall at short notice and all the stall holders had a great time. The Beavers will be working on their Healthy Eating badge and First Aid badge. The Cubs will be having a go at the Cyclists badge and have a guest speaker from ‘Little Green Change’ and will be looking at Hedgerows and Conservation. Some Cubs will also be joining the Scouts on a camp at Mortonhamptead to take part in Camping, Shooting, Archery and hiking. This will be a great experience for them as some missed out on a camp last year and need the nights away experience. Scouts will be going to Higher Grange Devon to learn about cooking on fires and the different techniques. used Thank you to Luke and Sara Vandore-Mackay for having us. They will also be with the Cubs on the Camp to Mortonhamptead, this is a favourite with the Scouts as there is always lots to do and a swimming pool on site. The campsite is a lovely place to camp as seen in photo. We have spaces in the Beaver Section so if you have a child who is coming up to 6 years old and would like to join please contact us on our website. Also if you as an Adult would like to come and join us, help out at meetings, sit on the Trustee board or just help out in the back ground please contact us and have a chat. 12 The rewilding plan turning churchyards into ‘living sanctuaries’ How can we encourage new life in our churchyards this year? The Bishop of Norwich, the Right Revd Graham Usher, recently called for “land action plans” to be developed to encourage and enhance biodiversity across the estates owned by the C of E. The bishop urged that churchyards should be rewilded to become “places for the living, not just the dead”. With the C of E responsible for around 17,500 acres of churchyard alone (notwithstanding a further 70,000 acres of agricultural land owned by dioceses which is known as glebe land and is largely leased to tenant farmers), such a concerted push could have a dramatic impact on enhancing Britain’s biodiversity. There is another reason that churchyards have the potential to be such an oasis of wildlife across the country. As consecrated ground, they have been largely spared the ravages of industrial farming and development which has decimated Britain’s flora and fauna elsewhere. Ancient trees have been left to grow and the earth left undisturbed for centuries. Several national schemes exist to support the rewilding ambitions of church congregations. A charity called Caring For God’s Acre provides an action pack for those considering rewilding consecrated ground, while since 2016 the Christian charity A Rocha UK has offered an “eco church” accreditation. Roads at ‘breaking point’, Pot Hole dilemma! Have you hit a pothole and damaged your car yet? If not, it is probably only a matter of time. Despite TWO MILLION potholes being filled over the past year (the highest number since 2015) the Asphalt Industry Alliance (AIA) is now warning that our roads are crumbling to ‘breaking point’. According to the AIA’s annual survey, only just under half the roads in England and Wales which are maintained by local councils are in good condition. 36 per cent are adequate and 17 per cent are poor. Last October the Government said it would provide £8.3billion of extra funding over the next 11 years, just to fix potholes. But the sum needed to fix the backlog is now at £16.3 billion. Meanwhile, Simon Williams, the RAC’s head of policy, warns that the extra £8.3 billion is “only sufficient to resurface around 5,000 miles of road, which is sadly just three per cent of all council-managed roads in England.” Yet there are an estimated 107,000 miles of roads which are fast reaching the end of their lives. “The scale of the problem now facing councils is truly gargantuan.”
THY KINGDOM COME – 9th to 19th May 2024 This year more than a million Christians worldwide will be joining in long-distance prayer between Ascension Day to Pentecost (9th – 19th May). What started in 2016 with the Archbishops of Canterbury and York inviting the CofE to pray, has grown into an annual international and ecumenical call to 11 days of specific prayer that more people will come to know Jesus. According to the organisers of Kingdom Come, the movement is now in nearly 90% of countries worldwide and spread among 85 different denominations and traditions. Kingdom Come explains that it encourages: “Every person, household, and church to pray that those who have not yet heard the Good News of Jesus Christ and His love for the world, will hear it for themselves and respond and follow Him. “Specifically, we again invite each Christian to pray that God’s Spirit might work in the lives of five people whom they know, who have not responded with their ‘Yes’ to God’s call.” Whether you have joined in ‘Thy Kingdom Come’ before or not, you are invited to take part this year. Archbishop Justin Welby says: “In praying 'Thy Kingdom Come' we all commit to playing our part in the renewal of the nations and the transformation of communities." In appreciation of our nurses The work of nurses is celebrated around the world on 12th May. That day was chosen to be International Nurses Day because it is the anniversary of Florence Nightingale’s birth. Here are some current stats on nurses in the UK: There are currently 731,058 nurses on the permanent NMC register. With midwives and nursing associates added, this figure rises to be 788,638. There are more female nurses than male nurses. 89% of registered nurses identify as female, and 11% identify as male. We need more nurses! Currently there are about 46,800 vacancies. Could this be a job for you? www.parishpump.co.uk

Please join us for Chilli, Cake & Coffee on Saturday 18th May at 12.00noon in Uplyme Church. We are fundraising this Christian Aid Week! Why? To help people push back against poverty. Did you know, malnourishment and poverty affect more than 70% of people in Burundi? Christian Aid are working to empower families in Burundi build reliable and diverse incomes. Take Aline, for example. She found a lifeline in Christian Aid after she felt the full force of extreme poverty, when an early marriage ended in abuse and violence. We helped her with small business training and she set up as a grocery wholesaler. Today, Aline can afford food, clothes, and essential healthcare for her family. There!s more people Christian Aid could reach – and that!s why we are fundraising. The money raised can help ensure more people get the skills and knowledge they need to fulfil their hopes and ambitions. £10 could provide one person with the training that supports their family to set up a small business, such as selling homegrown vegetables. Together we can make a lasting difference. Thank you For more information please contact: Chris Buckingham 07770 253289
No Big Spender. In the street I found a Scratchcard picked it up, quick as a flash, Took it home and tried my luck Hoping that I’d win some cash. What would I do if I won the BIG ONE Thoughts of buying loads of bling Maybe get a high speed sports car The choice is endless-that’s the thing. I could always buy a Mansion One with over one hundred rooms, Or go and see the Ancient Pyramids Then check out Tutankhamun’s tombs. I could kit out my double wardrobe Chuck out all my tatty clothes Throw in some weight loss and a face lift, I could do with a brand-new nose. My mind is buzzing with excitement As I reveal each numbered prize Staring at the prizes showing I can’t quite believe my very eyes. No chance for me to buy a mansion Nor a racehorse or fancy car Looking at the prize that’s showing I know I won’t be going far. The card has told me I’m a winner I know it was only one I’d found I am a winner, though not a big one It reveals that I’ve won £1 Diana Hunt

Uplyme Parish Council c/o Uplyme Village Hall, Lyme Road, Uplyme, Lyme Regis DT7 3UY Tel: 07413 947067 Email: [email protected] Website: www.uplymeparishcouncil.org Parish News – April 2024 - Spring has finally sprung! Annual Parish Mee;ng Uplyme’s Annual Parish Meeting will be held at the Village Hall on Wednesday, 8th May 2024 at 7pm. So, what’s the Annual Parish Meeting and how does it differ from a Council meeting? The Annual Parish Meeting is an ancient legacy from the Middle Ages, when Local Councils did not exist, and all local decision making was carried out by meetings of the whole community, taking place in the church vestry. The Annual Parish Meeting is open to all electors of your Town or Parish, who have the right not only to attend but also to speak on any matter of local interest. This is in contrast to a Council meeting, where electors who are not Councillors have no automatic right to speak (though many councils do, of course, have a set time during the Council meeting when electors can raise matters of concern to them). We hope that local groups, organisations and charities attend to update the community on the work they have been doing locally. The notice of the meeting will be posted on the noticeboard and Council website, so get in touch with the Clerk if you would like to speak at the meeting. Elections See details on the noticeboard at the Village Hall regarding details of the candidates, their agents and how to vote in the Police & Crime Commissioner election on 2nd May. Hands-on Council Our Councillors all have different life and work experience, which they use to help the Uplyme community. Once such Councillor, Cllr. Pete Hackett, has been working on the benches around Uplyme, repairing and refurbishing them. This time, it was the turn of the play park. The Council also purchased a new picnic bench to replace the existing one. Many thanks to Cllr. Hackett for the continued programme of improvements for only the cost of materials: Chairman: Cllr. So, if you would like to help the Hall by sponsoring a prize, please talk to John Fowler as you see him roaming around the village or enjoying a quiet pint in the Talbot … or contact Amber by email below. During the Easter holidays, the floor had its annual tidy up and polish, making our Uplyme Hall more beautiful than ever – so glossy, so shiny, mmmm! Looking after the Hall & keeping on top of all those maintenance jobs as well as improvements keep it viable for future Uplyme residents. This year’s big project is the installation of solar panels on the hall, which will cost around £18K – so lots of fund-raising is needed and applying for grants to cover part of the cost. If you would like to find out more or help at any of our events, please talk to Chair Pete Hackett, Secretary Margaret Wiscombe, our lovely Manager Amber or any of our wonderful committee members.
