2 Uplyme Church has recently held their Annual Parochial Church Meeting at which the two Churchwardens are elected. Churchwardens are legally responsible for the upkeep of the building and to supervise worship and keep order. My colleague and good friend, Jenny Perham, stood down this year after working very hard over the past few years to help maintain the church for the use of the whole community. She is not going anywhere, as she will now be known as “Verger” and will take good care of Baptisms, Weddings and Funerals. We are fortunate to have such a lovely person, who knows virtually everyone in Uplyme, for people to be in touch with at these important times of their lives. We now welcome a new Churchwarden, Jan Impey, who is stepping into those well worn shoes, and learning fast in the role. Jan also leads our “Shining Stars” toddler group on a Friday morning in the Scout Hut in Rhode Lane, helps lead Together@10 worship and supports Friday Night Fun for year 6 and above. Every Churchwarden brings something different to the role. I look forward to another interesting year sharing the responsibilities with Jan. Sue Wells Churchwarden 20th June Summer Solstice, longest day of the year June, of course is the month of the summer solstice, the month of the Sun. Sol + stice come from two Latin words meaning ‘sun’ and ‘to stand still’. As the days lengthen, the sun rises higher and higher until it seems to stand still in the sky. The Summer Solstice results in the longest day and the shortest night of the year. The Northern Hemisphere celebrates in June, and the Southern Hemisphere celebrates in December.

Welcome to the June Edition of the Parish News This month the Village Fete takes place on Saturday 8th June between 2-5pm. This is always a fantastic day and I love the fact I meet so many friends I’ve not seen for ages whilst walking around. Do go along and support the Group that work so hard to make our village the wonderful place it is. The “Big Church Clean” was a great success. Thank you to all those who came along and helped. Mike from Lime Kiln Lane popped in and did a sterling job as did many others who came for the day or just an hour or so. Every little helped. The windows are gleaming and popping out at you in the sunshine. Special thanks to Noreen who worked and helped organise every day we were there. Enjoy June! Ed

4 Never Alone A new reflection from David Dare We introduce a celebration of encouragement from our risen Lord Jesus Christ. He came into the world to save sinners. He demonstrated his power to do so by defeating death. Now he offers perpetual company and support to all who believe in him for forgiveness and eternal company and support. We may remember an early experience of being frightened by feeling alone. Perhaps it was as a child, being left at the gate of one’s first school. Or maybe one was intimidated when first travelling alone by train or air. Some of us may have had a friendly individual come alongside and comfort us at the time. We can also be made to feel uncomfortable if and when we first encounter anything ‘Spiritual’. This might involve us reading religious writings of one sort or another. Bible scriptures helpfully begin to reveal that, although we don't realise it at the time, we may be entering an invisible and disturbing realm of spiritual conflict. The comforting 23rd Psalm is often read at funerals because it speaks God’s power to shepherd us through times of grief – even through ‘the valley of the shadow of death.’ It encourages us to ‘fear no evil because you are with us.’ But who is the ‘you’ and what may the ‘evil’ be? Well – we may be fortunate enough to have someone explain that the ‘you’ refers to the Good Shepherd, Jesus Christ and that evil usually originates through the fallen angel Satan. I am reminded of the childhood chorus:- “No, never alone. No never alone. He (Jesus) promised never to leave me. No, never alone.” The resurrected Jesus Christ, said the same thing before his ascension back to heaven – “Surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age” In the mean time, Jesus gave the assurance that in his absence, he would send a Comforter to those who believe in him – the Holy Spirit, the third person of the divine Trinity. Underneath, and for additional safety, we have the loving arms of our Heavenly Father, the first person of the Divine Trinity. The glorious truth is that Christ is always with us. Indeed, he wishes to spiritually abide IN us. David Dare.

11 1st Lym Valley Scout Group (Uplyme and Lyme Regis) The Summer has finally kicked off! The rays of sunshine we enjoyed in May teases us with what might be an amazing summer (or a short and wet one…!) Whatever the weather throws at us, we will still be out and about, camping come rain or shine. The May Fete on Anning Road was a real success for us – we managed to raise over £200 for the group. It was great to see so many of our group helping out, as well as so many faces from out and about in the community. We’re looking forward to being at the Uplyme Fete, we’ll be running the BBQ again and also seeing the return of the plate smashing. Hopefully, by the time of going to print, both Sarah and Rhys would have qualified as Paddle Sport Instructors, meaning we take our Mega SUPs out without having to bring in external instructors. It’s really important that we continue to invest in our volunteers, and it’s one of the reasons that we continue to see the number of volunteers that support us rise (and also because it’s really good fun!) If you want to come and join our adventure as a volunteer; there’s more information on our website (see bottom of the page). This month is a busy month for us – not just with being out and about in the community – but with camping! The Beavers will be enjoying a nights away at the Scout Hut with activities to cover the Outdoor Challenge badge. We’re also looking forward to going to Strategy – an annual camp held in Cirencester Park which 3000 Scouts and their leaders attend – where we will compete in a number of challenges to try to win. The Explorers won a few years back, and we hope we might win some silverware again this year. We look forward to seeing any Uplymers out and about this month. As ever, you can see everything we’re up to on Social Media and on our Website. If your child is interested in getting involved, please do get in touch, we can’t always promise a space, but we can take their name down. Have a happy June everyone! 12 Eco-Church @ Exeter Cathedral Along with other Eco-Churches, Uplyme Church was presented with its Silver Award at Exeter Cathedral, by the Right. Reverend Jackie Searle, the Acting Bishop of Exeter, at a special Eco-Church event, with displays, talks, and an interesting panel discussion including the head of the Met office. In an eco-friendly twist on the red carpet, the award winners walked down the aisle along a colourful mossy pompom carpet, made by the Art & Energy charity. We look forward to our Friday Night Fun group creating pompoms to contribute to this piece which will be displayed at diverse sites, ranging from the Glastonbury Festival to COP 29 in Azerbaijan. To learn more, visit https:// www.artandenergy.org/the-mossy-carpet. Exeter Cathedral received it’s own Eco-Church silver award, and at a reception after the event, Uplyme Church took the opportunity to harangue the Cathedral about what changes they were putting in place. We were pleased to learn that that large lawn would soon be welcoming wild flowers in under the chestnut tree and in a newly created labyrinth, and that newly installed underfloor heated area, are the rest of the cathedral hoped to be heated by a community heating scheme, where large buildings in Exeter would receive efficiently, centrally generated heat pump heat. This would cut the cathedrals carbon emissions by 70% It was so encouraging to hear from other churches in the Diocese how they were aligning their church buildings and life with Creation. Sometimes environmental work can feel very lonely – so it was so good to learn that so many other communities are on similar paths. Jo Smith

13 OUR EVENING SERVICES EXPLAINED Our first Sunday of the month evening services at 6 p.m. follow the cycle of Evening Worship, Healing and Wholeness, and Choral Evensong. Evening Worship follows the rhythm of the Christian year, with its rich tapestry of themes and images. It is a more meditative and contemplative time of prayer and praise. The content is participatory through the use of prayers, responses and hymns, but importantly there are also times of silence for personal reflection and prayer. These precious times of quiet help us both to speak and to listen to God. It is our hope and prayer that through this form of worship, we will meet with God and he will meet with us. Healing and Wholeness services are an integral part of many Christian traditions. These services focus on the physical, emotional, social, and spiritual well-being of individuals and communities. Such services seek honestly to present our brokenness and suffering before God to receive God’s abiding care, compassion, healing, and reconciliation. We also pray for the healing of our world. It is a quiet service, we it in a circle and really value each other. It is a very moving time and all are welcome. Choral Evensong is a beautiful tradition that can give respite and inspiration during our busy modern lives. Evensong dates back to the time of the Reformation, using elements of the old monastic Offices of Vespers and Compline. The words were laid out in Archbishop Cranmer’s 1662 Book of Common Prayer. The choir sing a psalm, the Magnificat - the song of Mary, and the Nunc Dimittis - the song of Simeon, and an anthem, plus congregational hymns. The fact that Evensong has had such a long evolution gives a powerful sense of connecting present with past, and experiencing something much greater than ourselves. In this service, we are joining a vast community acting as countless people have done before us for over a thousand years. On the third Sunday, there is a celebration of Holy Communion at 6 p.m. On the first Monday of each month at 7 p.m. we hold the service of Compline. The ancient office of Compline derives its name from a Latin word meaning 'completion' (completorium). It is above all a service of quietness and reflection before the day ends. It begins with a short silence, a space to reflect on the day which has passed. Then follow confession and absolution, a psalm, Bible reading, the Song of Simeon, prayers, ending with a blessing. There is normally unaccompanied plainsong and the service last for about 20 minutes. It is an ideal way to end the day. Do join us at any or all of these services. You will be most welcome. Rev’d Nicky & Roger Grose

14 WHIRLWIND. Why is it when washday comes the weather's damp and grey, Then you save up laundry to wash another day. Why is it on wet days when your machine is full to the brim There's not a chance to see your laundry outside, blowing in the wind. You can always save some money when the weather's warm and fine And do a load of washing and peg it on the line. If you've loads of washing and the weather's cold and wet You can bung it all in a great big bag And take it to the Launderette. Diana Hunt

19 Cont’d overleaf Uplyme Parish Council c/o Uplyme Village Hall, Lyme Road, Uplyme, Lyme Regis DT7 3UY Tel: 07413 947067 Email: [email protected] Website: www.uplymeparishcouncil.org A new Council year. Annual Parish Assembly Congratula2ons to Cllr. Chris James, who was returned as Chair at the annual Council mee2ng on 8th May, and also to Cllr. Andy Turner, who was returned as Vice-Chair. The Council have an exci2ng year ahead whilst they forge on with progress to the playground, road safety schemes and Stafford Mount (see more on the laEer below). Cllr. Chris James addressed the annual Parish Assembly, the annual mee2ng of electors, and gave the following update: “This report cannot cover absolutely everything that the Parish Council has been involved in during the last 12 months but mentions those of greater significance to the community. We have had some successes but there are still areas where our plans have not yet been realised and are still ongoing. The most important item which continues to be addressed is road safety improvements in the Crogg Lane Area of the B3165. We continue to work with Devon Highways to address this issue which was first highlighted in the Neighbourhood Plan of 2017. The main constraints have been a lack of funding within DCC and the limited field of view along the road in that area. The PC allocated £3000 to supplement DCC funding of the project and that amount remains available. At the same time, the zebra crossing by the village hall has not been progressed, although a County Council survey confirms the requirement. There is however some hope that the owner of Broadway has indicated that he is willing to donate some land and the introduction of a 20mph speed limit through the village will reduce the length of visibility that is required. We will continue to pursue these important safety issues. We have transferred money from the reserves to fund improvements to the playground and Stafford Mount. The work on Stafford Mount has commenced and the playground improvements are being progressed with a new picnic table and repairs to a bench and the fencing. s106 and community infrastructure levies (CIL) moneys have been allocated. The War Memorial was cleaned at a not inconsiderable cost and now being slightly weathered looks really good. The cemetery gates have been refurbished and the bench repaired. A grant was made to allow the purchase of new Christmas lights and our thanks go to Becky Turner and all the volunteers who helped to produce such a festive display. A grant was obtained for the purchase of equipment for the emergency response team, including gritters, wet weather clothing and other smaller items. The volunteers have dealt with serious flooding on more than one occasion this year. It is invidious to name them all but the village owes them a debt of gratitude. A revised emergency plan has also been completed. In relation to flooding we have employed a lengthsman who has kept the drains, ditches and stone-traps clear. I would also add that he does a considerable amount of work on a voluntary basis as well. We, through the Parish Clerk have continued to engage with local and other authorities and I believe that we have developed a greatly improved relationship with Lyme Regis Town Council during the last 12 months, which I hope may continue with the new Mayor. I must make a particular mention of the Planning Committee who undertake their quite onerous responsibilities in a professional manner and are often blamed for decisions made by EDDC, some of which do not follow their

20 recommendation. I also thank our honorary tree wardens and our footpath warden who give of their time for the benefit of our parishioners. County Councillor, Ian Hall, gives us constant support, which often goes unnoticed by our parishioners and our District Councillor, Susan Westerman, despite being new to the post, has supported us whenever she can. I am extremely grateful for the work done by and the support of Uplyme’s Councillors. We have gained the reputation of being an effective Parish Council who for the most part do not engage in unhelpful, adversarial spats. This is therefore a good time to note that we currently have 2 vacancies and would be pleased to receive any applications to join us. Last but not least I must thank all who I have neither mentioned nor named previously, who volunteer in many ways for the benefit of our community and without whom Uplyme would be a poorer place to live.” Casual Vacancies Following her resignation as a Councillor, we would like to thank Claire Wiscombe for her dedicated years of service to the Council. This has left another vacancy on the Parish Council. Are you interested in serving your local community? Do you want to make a difference to all those around you? Do you want to represent the views of local people? If you would like to make a difference, and be involved in shaping the future of your local Community, why not step forward and apply to become a Parish Councillor? Uplyme Parish Council have a Councillor vacancy which can be filled by co-option, and we would like to hear from you if you have a passion for Uplyme! Eligibility Criteria You must be at least 18 years old and be a British citizen, an eligible Commonwealth citizen or a citizen of any member state of the European Union, and You must meet at least one of the following four qualifications: • You are registered as a local government elector for the parish; • You have occupied as owner or tenant any land or other premises in the parish during the whole of the 12 months before the day of co-option; • Your main or only place of work during the 12 months prior to the day of co-option has been in the parish; or • You have lived in the parish, or within three miles of it, during the whole of the 12 months before the day of co-option. Full Council meetings are held once a month (normally the second Wednesday) except in August when there is a break. These are held at the Village Hall, Lyme Road and commence at 7.15pm. In addition to the monthly meetings there are various committees, which meet on an ad hoc basis. Membership of these committees is voluntary. 22 It’s JUNE and the best village event of the year! YAY! On SATURDAY 8th JUNE, it’s the Uplyme Village Fete where you can be transported back through the ages for a traditional time with Morris dancers, llamas, Punch & Judy, fabulous cakes, various stalls, and just meeting up with all your friends! And don’t forget to buy a raffle ticket with the star prize of £150, plus lots of other amazing prizes to win. The Hall’s latest fund-raiser, the Indoor Car Boot sale, went very well, adding to our fund to install solar panels. We have nothing planned for July; the Horticultural Summer Show is in August, another very popular village event. In September, we have our Big Breakfast on Saturday 14th September and on Sunday 22nd September we’re holding our 30th Anniversary Exhibition with Cream Teas. If you have some photos of the Hall (old or new) that you could loan or any interesting anecdotes, please get in touch with us so we can include them in the exhibition. Building the new Hall was a huge village project with lots of people involved – the buy-a-brick scheme to name but one – let’s celebrate our hall history! We are very proud of our Hall and its value to the community with a committee that work very hard to maintain it. The Hall has many great qualities: its lovely views, the covered terrace, the shiny floor, stage, kitchen, bar … and, of course the car park. The car park is primarily for the use of Hall users and you will no doubt have noticed that we have started to cone it off for events because more and more people are using it. Thank you to those who make a donation towards its upkeep but please remember that this is private land and not a public car park. We have noticed that some groups & businesses advertise our car park as somewhere handy to park – a friendly request to remove mention of the car park from your material as it’s not for tourists, day-trippers and visitors. It’s for Uplyme. If you would like to find out more or help at any of our events, please talk to Chair Pete Hackett, Secretary Margaret Wiscombe, our Manager Amber or any of our hard-working and dedicated committee members.
