2 There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under the heavens: Ecclesiastes 3 : 1 When Andrea and I were appointed to ministry in the Axe Valley Mission Community in October 2016 we felt blessed to be called to East Devon. Seven years on we really appreciate this blessing but also know that the time has come to pass on this ministry. This is a good place to be and there are so many special people who seek to serve God in the best way they can – by showing love and care for others – His people. I reflect upon the joy we have had in living in, and contributing to, this wonderful community with its group of churches. We especially give thanks for the people we have met in fellowship. I would like to share with you this piece of prose which has been an inspiration to me throughout my working life. Everything you need to know is in there somewhere : The Golden Rule and love and basic sanitation; ecology and politics and equality and sane living. All I really need to know about how to live and what to do and how to be, I learned in the Nursery. Wisdom was not at the top of the University mountain, but there in the School sand-tray. These are the things I learned: share everything play fair put things back where you found them clean up your mess don’t take things that aren’t yours don’t hit people say sorry when you hurt someone flush wash your hands before you eat warm biscuits and cold milk are good for you live a balanced life – learn a little and think a little and draw and paint and sing and dance and play and work a little every day take a nap every afternoon when you go out into the world, watch out for traffic, hold hands and stick together be aware of wonder - remember the little seed in the plastic cup: the roots go down and the plant goes up and no-one really knows how or why, but we are all like that goldfish and hamsters and white mice and even the little seed in the plastic cup - they all die and so do we and then remember one of the first words you learned - the biggest word of all – LOOK ! Take any one of those items and extrapolate it into sophisticated adult terms and apply it to your family life or your work or your government or your world and it holds true and clear and firm. Think what a better world it would be if we all - the whole world - had biscuits and milk at about three in the afternoon and then lay down with our ‘teddies’ for a nap - or if all governments had as a basic policy to always put things back where they found them and to clean up their own mess. And it is still true, no matter how old you are - when you go out into the world, it is best to hold hands and stick together. (Adapted from ‘All I Need to Know’ by Robert Fulghum - Grafton Books 1986)
3 Hello and welcome to the August edition of our local magazine. It’s lovely to see some new advertisers in the magazine, we hope you will choose them when thinking about the services on offer in the area. Our thanks go out to all our advertisers to whom we are very grateful. They help to make the magazine viable and keep it going. How did the Horticultural Show go? I was away in rainy Derbyshire but I understand that Uplyme folk did us proud and despite the weather turned out in force to support the day. Well Done! Do note that Pound Lane will be closed between Cooks Mead & Ethelston’s Close from 14th Aug - 22nd Sept so that the wall outside the school can be repaired. There will be NO vehicular access at all. Do see the notice on page 22 for further details. Thank you to Claire at the village hall for regular info about the Village Hall bookings. Just like Margaret before her, they always send me the info required to go in the magazine. Claire is stepping down as Hall Manager, and a tribute to her is on page 21. There is also an advert for the job of Manager if you fancy it? It’s been a funny start to the summer with the weather, but I have to say the gardens around Uplyme are looking beautiful and it seems to be a bumper crop of soft fruit at the moment. Long may it continue. AVMC football starts back in September. Have a look at the details on the back cover........ Can you help? Ed As Andrea and I move on to the next phase of our lives and ministry we are grateful for our time here and move on knowing that we are held by many wonderful hearts and hands and promise to continue to hold you all in our prayers and love. I would like to conclude my last magazine article as Rector with a very special prayer of blessing : May the peace of the Lord Christ go with you, Wherever he may send you. May he guide you through the wilderness, protect you through the storm. May he bring you home rejoicing at the wonders he has shown you. May he bring you home rejoicing once again into our door. With thoughts and prayers Clive and Andrea

5 Journeys of Faith. God’s team encourages Czechoslovakian Christians. In August 1968, Communist, Warsaw Pact forces invaded Czechoslovakia imposing harsh restrictions on the faith of Christians there. Aware of this, John Blanchard of the European Christian Mission in the U.K. prayed for someone he could connect with Transworld Christian Radio (TWR). Paul Freed, the founder of TWR had obtained a licence to broadcast into Czechoslovakia from a building in Monaco where Hitler had intended to broadcast his propaganda but was unable to do so when the second world ended. At a gathering of Christians in South Wales around this time, John Blanchard spoke of the need of a Slovac speaking Christian to prepare programmes for TWR. In God’s perfect timing, there happened to be present at that meeting, Robert Poloha. In 1969, he and his family were visiting Mrs Poloha’s relatives in South Wales from Czechoslovakia. Robert responded positively and soon began recording tapes in Slovak, in a makeshift studio in Aberdare, South Wales where accommodation was also provided for his family. Eventually in 1976, Robert and his wife Emi agreed to move to Monaco to become part of the Radio community. There, they recorded many programmes and also became busy replying to correspondence from listeners. I had the privilege of developing a close friendship with the Poloha family while studying at the Bible College of Wales in 1974/5. Communism fell in Europe in 1991. For the first time they were able to visit Slovakia without fear of arrest and imprisonment. After Robert’s retirement from TWR in 1993, they moved back to Wales, and began repeated trips to Slovakia for months at a time, visiting churches and groups where listeners welcomed them with many remarkable stories of salvation and God’s intervention during their years of Radio ministry. Many house churches were planted under communism, meeting secretly around the radio. Robert was diagnosed with cancer in 1996 while in Slovakia. Before returning to Wales for the last time that September, he was able to see the newly opened and furnished TWR Slovakia studios in Bratislava, the very city he and his family had left hurriedly 27 years earlier. Such a miracle had been prayed for, and now witnessed by Robert before ‘being called home’ in December 1996. The department continues Christian broadcasting in Slovak to this day. David Dare.

[email protected] ARMCHAIR GARDENER I have a little garden And I’m going to plant some seeds But first of all, a job I hate I have to tackle weeds. I get out my fork and hoe to try to make a start They’re telling me this exercise Will benefit my heart. I make a start & get to work To clear the ground for planting The garden soil it weighs a ton And soon it’s got me panting. I spend all morning digging, and it doesn’t look too bad Not long now to finishfor which I’ll be that glad. I’ll sit down on a garden chair when my work is done, Then I’ll put my feet up And soak up some summer sun. Diana Hunt
10 Uplyme Gospel Singers at Beer Caves Our footsteps echoing down a winding, low lit corridor, past the Catholic Chapel carved out in the Civil War, we were walking where Romans had carved out stone, where children had been employed doing hard labour, where catholics had hidden their faith during the Civil War. We were treading the paths of a long history in the cool caves at Beer. Uplyme Gospel Singers were also stepping forward in a little trepidation, unsure of the performance space which awaited us. There we found the cave was higher with a stone stage carved out at one end. Most members ably stepped up, and those few of us who found it more challenging were helped up by other members. We started our quick rehearsal and found the sound echoed back at us. We were lit up by low lighting and some fairy lights and torches we had brought in for the stage. As we walked down the winding corridor for the performance, we started singing by the Catholic Chapel and walked onto the stage continuing the song, so that the audience coming behind us were regailed and surrounded by sound. Once everyone was settled, either standing to see us, or sitting on fold up chairs, the concert began in earnest, the acoustics outstanding. Chloe Stratta, our leader, had put together a wide variety of songs. Hlonofasta, a song made known to us through the Soweto Choir is always a big favourite of ours because it is so lively. When we were first introduced to it, we thought we would never learn it, but it is surprising what repetition and determination can do. The children in the audience were really bopping to that one. Then we had the very spiritual and peaceful songs such as ‘The Peace of the earth’ and ‘Deep River’, ‘Blessing of Aaron’ and the songs a little like a sea shanty, such as ‘Ever and Aye’ where we all loved singing ‘Yip’ in each verse. It’s difficult to say which song we did best, but something almost magical happened when we sang ‘Do I have a place in Heaven’, where an ex member came along and sang with us, with one verse written by her in Nepalese. It was very moving as the yearning in her voice flowed around the cave. Although Uplyme Gospel Singers always perform at least one concert in Uplyme Church, we have performed in many other places over the years, including various other local churches, pubs, guildhalls and town halls, so when our lovely leader. Chloe Stratta suggested Beer Caves, we were surprised. ‘Won’t it be cold?’ ‘Yes, you’ll have to wrap up warm.’ ‘Do you think we will sell any tickets?’ We did not need to worry. The music enveloped the audience. It was a very special performance. Thanks to all those who attended from Uplyme, thanks especially to the garage for patiently selling our tickets. We have some folk who have never missed a performance. We especially thank you for following us. This time we also had some from Seaton and Beer who came to see us. Everyone was very complimentary after the performance. If you would like to join us to be a part of our spiritual journey in song, you are always welcome. We have a lot of fun as well as creating special moments. We meet in term time on a Tuesday evening at 7 30 pm at Uplyme Church. Jo Cursley

13 1st Lym Valley Scout Group (Uplyme and Lyme Regis) Well, the lovely weather in June didn’t continue into July and hampered a few of our planned activities. The Beavers and Scouts managed to get out onto the rafts, and we invested to new ones on the rafts which is always good fun. But Monday Scouts and the Cubs were scuppered by the high winds. Not to worry we have already planned to do some rafting in September. We will also be hosts to the District Scout Raft Race on Sunday 10th September from Victoria beach (behind the aquarium) Do come along and support us. The Cubs had good weather when they helped tidy and prune in the Uplyme Churchyard as part of their community badge and were rewarded with squash and cake. They really enjoyed themselves and will be doing some more to encourage wildlife in the church yard next term. Jamie one of older scouts is moving onto Explorers next month has achieved his Chief Scouts Gold award which was presented to him at our final meeting held on the beach. We have no big camps planned for this summer for the scouts, we will focus on our trip to France next year, but we have had a few outings so far this year, so they are not missing out. They have been helping in the community with the car parking at the horticultural show, which was a bit wet, and you may see some of them around on Firework night collecting for the Carnival committee. As we head towards September, it is a time for new beginnings. As our group continues to grow, we do need more help to keep our success going: if you would like to volunteer at the Scout Group as a leader, tea maker, behind the scenes, maintenance or fundraising, please do not hesitate to contact us. If you have a child who would like to join, please go our website and fill in the joining enquiry form and we will get back to you – there is a waiting list for all sections, including Explorers. 14 Uplyme Pre-school News We had a really busy end to the year, our theme for the term was ‘Pets’ so we had a visit from a pony, a tortoise, a bearded dragon and a dog, the children loved learning all about how we look after each of them. We’ve been doing lots of playing outside in the sunshine in our fabulous new garden area, we had our end of year sports day, a duck race, a trip to Seaton Wetlands to spot the Gruffalo, a pirate dress up day and a teddy bear’s picnic! We all deserved a holiday after all of that!! Our toddler group has been really busy and we’ve loved seeing all of the little ones coming and enjoying playing and making new friends. Toddler group runs every Tuesday afternoon (term time) from 1.45pm until 3.15pm, everyone is welcome. Alison Bumblebees are Happy near Churches Bumblebees like churchyards. At least, they were the insects most seen during a recent survey of churchyards and burial grounds in England. It all shows “how valuable, when managed sensitively, many of our churchyards are for bumblebees,” said a spokesman for Caring for God’s Acre, a conservation charity for UK burial grounds. Such places often offer unique habitats for nature. The survey was part of the Churches Count on Nature, an opportunity for communities to record plants, insects and animals found in burial grounds and churchyards. After bumblebees, ladybirds and aphids took second and third place.

19 Uplyme Parish Council c/o Uplyme Village Hall, Lyme Road, Uplyme, Lyme Regis DT7 3UY Tel: 07413 947067 Email: [email protected] Website: www.uplymeparishcouncil.org Parish News – July 2023 A spotlight on the Council Commi1ees… Commi1ees, comprising of less members than the full Council, are more dynamic and can examine and discuss issues in greater depth and more detail. If you are interested in a1ending any of the Commi1ees, details and the agenda for discussions are always published on both the Council website (details above) and on the Parish noBceboard. Planning Commi8ee One of the busiest commi1ees on the Council is the Planning Commi1ee. This commi1ee comprises of 6 Councillors, including the Chair, Cllr. Andy Turner. Given that Uplyme sits within an Area of Outstanding Beauty and that Uplyme has had a ‘made’ Neighbourhood Plan for some years now, the commi1ee has scheduled meeBngs every fourth Wednesday of the month, but due to the sheer number of applicaBons, oMen have to sit twice a month to comply with consultaBon deadlines. Planning is oMen one of the most contenBous issues in the Parish, and everyone has the opportunity to comment on any given applicaBon, either in person at the parish planning meeBngs, or online on East Devon District Council’s dedicated planning portal website. Finance & Risk Commi8ee Whilst the Planning commi1ee is one of the busiest, the Finance & Risk commi1ee is one of the most important commi1ees of the Council. As guardians of public funds, the Council’s role is to ensure the safekeeping of the precept you pay to them and to obtain best value in any money it spends. All the finances are transparent, and every expenditure made by the Council can be seen on the Council minutes. The Council’s handling of public funds are scruBnised every year by both an independent internal auditor, and a government-appointed external auditor, so you can be sure that your Council tax is in safe hands. Estates & Personnel Commi8ee As the name suggests, this commi1ee focuses on the assets owned by the Council and its staff. From the cemetery, the war memorial, Millennium Copse and Stafford Mount garden, to bus shelters, bins and footpaths and everything in between, this commi1ee will consider any repairs needed, any replacements or increase in services required. Did you know that all the Council meeBngs are open to the public to a1end? The Council are your representaBves, and so they posiBvely welcome public a1endance and comment at meeBngs so that they can be sure that they accurately represent the views of the community on any given issue. 21 If you don’t know Claire McCarthy, you don’t live in Uplyme or you have been hiding under a rock for the last 15 years. Claire has been the Manager of Uplyme Village Hall since 2015 – before then she was the caretaker from 2008, when her children were still babes in arms. Her dedication and care of the Hall has been incredible. Sadly, she is now giving up the position as her very busy life just doesn’t have enough hours in the day. Claire describes her involvement with the Hall: “The Hall is the essence of the community, it’s always here, gently ageing which isn’t really noticeable with the little tweaks that keep it looking great. As Manager, I have one of the two paid roles at the Hall, so I work independently but with the support of the committee and keen volunteers. It was ideal when the children were very young and going through school as the hours are very flexible, meaning I could earn some money but still be there for my children … oh, and Scott, of course! It is an interesting and varied job, taking bookings for the Hall, dealing with various contractors & local businesses – you just meet so many people and become very much part of village life. I have so many fantastic memories of the hall which is always at the centre of our fetes, shows and celebrations. I will really miss it … but I’ll still be here in Uplyme.” Thank you, Claire, for looking after our Village Hall so well – we will really miss you! And we all wish you the very best JOB OPPORTUNITY - VILLAGE HALL MANAGER 11 hours per week – paid monthly – starts 1st September The ideal candidate will live locally, be computer literate, diplomatic, friendly & confident in liaising with our various hirers, contractors & local organisations. AVMC Saturday Football. “When I took over Saturday football some 20+ years ago, I thought I would do it for a couple of seasons. My son was 10 and he is now 33”! - Robin This season to keep going we need your help as some of the leaders can no longer give the commitment they have in the past. We need volunteer helpers/coaches/admin people to assist with the continued running of the group. People with a love for football and willing to be commit to helping for an hour or so on a Saturday morning. We are not a club with an agenda to win! We are a group that are introducing children to football to have a fun time and learn some skills. Do get in touch if you think you can help, and keep this long established and important group going. Call Robin on the number above, or drop an email to: [email protected]
