As I write this, Lent is just about to begin and we set on our path towards Easter. Some of us will have started the diocesan Lent course: seven sessions that offer space for personal reflection and small group study, as we consider the invitation to ‘Come and See’ and then ‘Go and Tell.’ Lent offers a wonderful space to try something new and/or to do some study. Some people will also want to take on a discipline, like giving up chocolate (impossible for me!) – or perhaps both! I can assure you that you will get something out of the Lent sessions, so do come along, even if it’s just for one session. You will be very welcome. The sessions are in Uplyme Church. Call me for details or see further details in the magazine. We then get to Easter, surely the most joyful day in the Christian year. This is the day when the story of the resurrection is told, we hear about the empty tomb and the appearance of the risen Christ. As we look around us and notice signs of new life we can, if we choose, open our hearts to this special Easter season with all the joy that it brings. Easter gives us great hope and conviction that God is among us now and is drawing us ever closer to a transformed life of joy and overwhelming love. Your church will be busy with events and services during this season. Look out for donkeys and palm crosses on Palm Sunday! Why not go along to something, join in, meet some new people and take some time to ponder this hope-filled season. You may even find that there will be Easter eggs to hunt for and enjoy too! Enjoy a beautiful, happy Easter! Wishing you every blessing. Rev Nicky

Hello Readers Welcome to the March edition of the Parish News! We have an action packed March for you and therefore you will find lots going on in and around the village. From many of the church services to bio-diversity walks and meetings to Jumble sales supporting the Village Hall. After my bit about ‘Nestbox week’ in last months magazine, someone kindly donated 2 swift boxes to the church they are now installed. Apart from trying to discourage the birds from nesting in the porch - only because of the mess they make - we hope the boxes will encourage more nesting pairs. I know the picture in the short article is of a swallow, but hey, it’s Uplyme’s symbol, and surely a bit of poetic license is allowed! A few quick nudges from me - Don’t forget it’s Mothering Sunday on March 10th - Flowers are better than chocolate during Lent! Easter Sunday falls on 31st March which is the same day as the clocks leap forward to BST. One bit of advice, don’t try and adjust your oven clock, they are impossible, ask Andy Fowkes! Happy Easter to one and all - Ed UPLYME CHURCH FESTIVAL CHOIR All singers are invited to join Festival Choir to participate in the Choral Evensong on Easter Sunday (31st March) at 6.00pm We sing in 4 parts but you are given lots of help to learn your part! 6 Journeys of Faith STAINER’S GREAT LOVE SONG. How does one define love? The Collins dictionary helpfully describes it as “A deep affection for” or, “A devotion to” someone or something. As to whether there are degrees or intensities of love, one need look no further than the history of organisations such as the RNLI for examples of people who have risked and even lost their lives in saving others at sea. There are also examples of individuals who have devoted their lives for the betterment of society such as Wilberforce towards the end of slavery. The bible confirms this sentiment in stating that “Greater love has no one than this, that he lay down his life for his friends.” Music has historically expressed love as in the composer Stainer’s composition “The Crucifixion” which celebrates God’s deep love for us. A friend of ours recently told us how she had been uplifted by singing the lyrics of this piece of music:- “God so loved the world that he gave his only Son that whoso believeth in Him shall not perish but have eternal life. God did not send his Son to condemn the world but that the world through him, might be saved.” The bible encourages us to personally experience God’s great love which casts out all fear. David and Rosemary Dare.

Uplyme Church have installed two Swift nesting boxes to the rear of the Church. Kindly donated. We await an influx of Swifts! Church Commissioners publish report on Human Rights best practice for investors The Church Commissioners for England has explained how it is holding company management accountable to its investor expectations on human rights in a new Human Rights report. “Social inequality presents a systemic risk to economies and diversified portfolios. Companies can best understand and address their links to inequalities by meeting their responsibility to respect human rights,” said Dan Neale, Social Lead, Church Commissioners for England. “During 2023, we worked towards a more systematic approach to human rights issues in our portfolio, with the aim of mitigating risks to broader society – and risks to long-term returns.” The report calls on companies to provide better data on human rights, and for investors to systematically integrate human rights data into their investment and stewardship activities. www.parishpump.co.uk Palm Sunday Visit It was Palm Sunday, but because of a sore throat, five-year-old Bobby was kept home from church with his Granny. When the family returned home, they were carrying several palm fronds and Bobby asked them what they were for. “People held them over Jesus’ head as He walked by,” his father explained. Bobby was aghast. “I don’t believe it! The one Sunday I don’t go, and He shows up!”

The Wanteete Water Project News from The Busoga Trust, a charity supported by Uplyme Church The Wanteete borehole, crucial for over 500 people, had become unusable due to corrosion of its galvanized iron pipes. Rehabilitating non-functioning boreholes with long lasting stainless steel parts is a very cost effective way of supplying communities with safe drinking water. Although this is much cheaper than drilling new boreholes, The Busoga Trust believes they are the only water agency doing this work. Sadly, there are very many hundreds boreholes in this condition installed by variety of agencies. The Busoga Trust is committed to rehabilitating them. The Busoga Trust set to rehabilitate the Wanteete village borehole. They started by replacing corroded pipes with high-quality stainlesssteel ones, repairing the concrete apron and drainage channel. They overhauled the pump system and installed new components for reliable, clean water. Finally they constructed a wooden fence around the borehole to keep animals away. Beyond the well rehabilitation, Busoga Trust ran a program on the importance of hygiene and sanitation. The Busoga Trust improved sanitation facilities, including the construction of new latrines. They also addressed menstrual hygiene, tackling the taboos and ensuring the community was educated and equipped. Throughout, the community was involved, discussing borehole status, and planning for improved sanitation and hygiene practices. The local “water committee” played a crucial role in overseeing the borehole's use and maintenance. The rehabilitated borehole now functions well, providing clean, safe water. The community was trained in sustainable borehole management, and enrolled in the Payment by Results program which ensures the borehole will now be maintained and remain operational. The Busoga Trust dedicated the Wanteete borehole rehabilitation to Uplyme Church in recognition of their support. The Busoga Trust’s mission is to eradicate poverty by delivering quality services that improve rural life, focusing on sustainable safe water and sanitation. This aligns with the Sustainable Development Goal 6, which advocates for universal access to water and sanitation.

Uplyme Climate Community Love, Gratitude and Pancakes The Uplyme Climate Community, which has formed with the aim of bringing people together to engage with the challenges of the climate crisis and biodiversity loss, held its inaugural event, “Love, Gratitude and Pancakes”, on 13 February. It was a great turnout, thanks to all who came along, and especially those who volunteered to wash up and clean up at the end. Thanks to Uplyme Church for use of the building and supporting the event. We think 250 pancakes were enjoyed, and some very interesting combinations of toppings were noted - who would have thought lemon juice, maple syrup and cheese would be so popular?! The inimitable Sheila Stratton facilitated arts and crafts on a theme of love and appreciation of the natural world. These creations, together with contributions from the children of Mrs Ethelston's and Shining Stars, were displayed in the church - hopefully you managed to pop in and take a look. Further Events coming up…. Vigil for Climate Justice Saturday 2 March 10.30-1130am, Uplyme Church Creating space for our feelings about the climate and biodiversity crisis. There will be an option to sit quietly, some creative activities for all ages outside, and a chance to put shared words to our experience. Walk, talk and look! Saturday 16 March 10.30am, meet outside Uplyme Church Join the community walk to make some time to notice the biodiversity and beauty of our home patch. The walk is followed by a lunch in the church. What shall we do next? An invitation for everyone to share ideas for actions, big and small. Let’s celebrate the things we are already doing and see what new ideas might emerge too. Look for the place, date and time in the April edition of this magazine and on the Church Facebook page! 14 Dear Uplyme Parish News, I thought you might like to include an article on Little Green Change, a non-profit social enterprise based in Uplyme. We provide environmental education and opportunities for primary and secondary-aged children, both directly in schools and in communities across the UK. Our aim is to inspire, educate, and facilitate action, benefitting both the planet and people. We do this through our educational Schools Programme, environmental events, competitions, projects, our annual magazine, awards ceremony, and initiatives. Last week, we delivered insect hotels to Mrs Ethelston's CE Primary Academy, and St Michael's CE VA Primary School, also speaking to the children about the declining number of insects in the UK and what we can do to help encourage more into our gardens and communities. Little Green Change has also been working with the Woodroffe School's gardening club, as well as offering work placements to two of their Year 12 students in the summer to encourage pupils to follow a career in the environmental sector. In addition to this, I will be delivering a talk, 'careers in biodiversity,' at the Woodroffe School and at Colyton Grammar School in March for National Careers Week (in my capacity as Founder and Director of Little Green Change). Another recent event was our Children's Christmas Give and Take event in Lyme Regis. This was funded by 2 local businesses (Martin Diplock Chartered Surveyors, and Scott Rowe Solicitors) and helped re-home 275.6kg of children's toys, books and clothing (more than the weight of an adult, male grizzly bear!), directly benefitting 112 children. In 2024, we plan to deliver an exciting range of free eco events, workshops and projects in the community for children through financial donations from businesses, funding bodies and individuals, including seed sowing sessions at Lyme Regis Library over the Easter school holiday, organic food growing, and biodiversity improvements, and another Children's Give and Take event. Schools and councils we work with further afield include Axminster Community Primary Academy, Beaminster School, and Chickerell Town Council. We have a number of expert talks on our website and YouTube channel from speakers across a wide range of national and regional organisations including the Royal Horticultural Society, Forestry England, Dorset CPRE, and others. You can view our biodiversity talks here: littlegreenchange.com/speakers.     Clare Matheson - Founder and Director Little Green Change Ltd M: 07803705100 E: [email protected] W: littlegreenchange.com

COFFEE CONFUSION I went into a Coffee Shop The choice, it blew my mind I just want a cup of coffee There are types of every kind. Did I want Espresso, Cappuccino or Flat White? I didn’t know what I wanted or indeed what type. Looking at the choices, and the prices on the board, I wondered if I bought one which one could I afford. There was a lot of coffee that came from other lands The customers looked pleased with theirs As they grasped them in their hands. I stepped aside to let the others make their choice and go outside, Looking at the price list, are we taken for a ride? All this choice of coffee Which comes from near and far I’ll settle for my coffee It’s from Tescos and in a jar! Diana Hunt Uplyme Pre-school News This term we’ve been learning about shape and colour. We’ve painted, printed, drawn, identified and mixed a whole rainbow of colours and we’ve learned about lots of different shapes. One of our children has family in Australia so we celebrated Anzac Day and learned about lots of different traditions that they have and all about the animals that live there. We’ve started a regular yoga and breathing session with the children. They’ve loved learning different relaxing postures and ways that breathing can help us to relax. Our toddler group has been really busy and we’ve loved seeing all of the little ones coming and enjoying playing and making new friends. Toddler group runs every Tuesday afternoon (term time) from 1.45pm until 3.15pm, everyone is welcome.

Axminster and District Choral Society The Society’s programme for spring and summer 2024 promises three evenings of enjoyable and entertaining music. March 23rd brings ‘Joy and Peace’, a programme of works by Handel. It features his Ode for St. Cecilia’s Day, a joyful glorification of the power of music, with melodies and harmonies that evoke its role in the creation of the universe. Also included is the Ode on the Birthday of Queen Anne, which celebrates the Peace of Utrecht which ended the War of the Spanish Succession. The Ode credits the Queen with bringing "lasting peace on Earth". This wonderful cantata is a present that any self-respecting Royal would be delighted to receive, and Anne was pleased enough to grant Handel a pension for life. The choir will be joined by professional soloists and orchestra, and will be conducted by Judy Martin. On April 13th ‘The trumpet shall sound’ in a fascinating and lively programme tracing the history of the trumpet through performances of well known music. The concert will be given by Alistair Mackie, former Principal Trumpeter of the Philharmonia Orchestra, accompanied by the choir’s President Andrew Millington. You can expect a very entertaining evening. On June 15th the choir’s summer concert will consist of favourite anthems and shorter choral pieces, chosen by the members for the sheer pleasure of singing – and pleasure for the audience too we hope. All three concerts will be held in the Minster Church, Axminster, starting at 7:30 pm. Tickets will be available on line at www.axminsterchoral.co.uk, from Archway Bookshop, Trinity Square, Axminster, from members of the choir or on the door. When my husband was six years old, he thought the creed included the line: “He suffered under a bunch of violets.” It took him years before he realised that he should have been saying: “under Pontius Pilate.”

Uplyme Parish Council c/o Uplyme Village Hall, Lyme Road, Uplyme, Lyme Regis DT7 3UY Tel: 07413 947067 Email: [email protected] Website: www.uplymeparishcouncil.org Parish News – February 2024 Achieving a more biodiverse Uplyme. Tree Hub The tree hub took place as planned at the Village Hall on Saturday 3rd February, and the huge queue testified to its enormous success! Hosted by the Parish Council in conjunction with the Devon Wildlife Trust the turnout was much better than anticipated, with over 70 pledges received to look after freely donated trees in the area and a queue the length of the car park. This project was to help replenish native broadleaf trees in Devon during ongoing ash dieback and so thank you to our honorary tree wardens, John Duffin and Terry Sweeney, and the other volunteers for donating their time and expertise to the event and to everyone who came and took away some trees to plant in their gardens – it was lovely to see so many people who were passionate about helping to improve the biodiversity of Uplyme.

Stafford Mount Although we’ve been quiet about the reinvigoration project of late, lots has been happening behind the scenes! A local garden designer has been drawing up a pollinator-friendly planting design, and this will be completed before the end of February, so we will be able to share it with you soon. We are also pleased to announce that the Council have also secured a significant amount of funding from East Devon National Landscape (formerly the AONB) to pay for new paving to renew the hard standing and make the area more accessible, so you will be able to see real improvement of this public garden and its biodiversity soon. Playground – new equipment Thank you to those of you who have already got in touch regarding the type of play equipment you would like to see in the playground. You will see more in the coming weeks about consultation with the community on what you would like to see, as we narrow down the types of play and equipment requested. Therefore, if you are a user or a carer of a user of the playground, we would still like to hear from you about what sort of equipment that you would like to see in the playground. If voting is required, please take time to cast your vote and encourage the young people you know to participate – after all this is their facility! If you are against the Council spending money on the playpark or, alternatively, if you would like to let us know what types of new equipment you would like to see in there, get in touch with the Clerk, Zishan, details in the heading of this page. Additional Defibrillator Thanks to a local business, we have found a suitable site for a new defibrillator. The Council have applied to the British Heart Foundation for the new machine and we will let you know whether our application has been successful in a future publication. Chairman: Cllr. Wiscombe Good Friday Good Friday is the day on which Jesus died on the cross. He was crucified at 9 a.m. in the morning, and died six hours later, at 3pm. It is the most solemn day in the Christian year, and is widely marked by the removal of all decorations from churches. In Lutheran churches, the day was marked by the reading of the passion narrative in a gospel, a practice which lies behind the ‘passions’ composed by Johann Sebastian Bach (1685 – 1750). Both the St Matthew Passion and the St John Passion have their origins in this observance of Good Friday. The custom of observing a period of three hours’ devotion from 12 midday to 3 pm on Good Friday goes back to the 18th century. The ‘Three Hours of the Cross’ often take the form of an extended meditation on the ‘Seven Last Words from the Cross’, with periods of silence, prayer, or hymn-singing.

Yay! It’s March! Lots going on, so make sure you don’t miss the Hall Jumble Sale and Coffee morning from 10am on Saturday 2nd March – why not treat Mum in advance of Mothering Sunday to coffee and some of the fabulous cakes there! And the Spring Equinox is on Wednesday 20th March tipping the balance from dark to light – very welcome after a long, dark winter. Good Friday is on the 29th, Easter Sunday on March 31st … and the clocks spring forward for longer evenings and a promise of summer. On the last day of January, friends, helpers and supporters had a fine social evening at the Hall enjoying drinks and a well-stocked finger buffet. It was great to be able to personally thank some of the amazing people who not only benefit the Hall but the whole village! The Uplyme A-Team brighten our village over the festive season by putting up the Christmas lights; they keep our footpaths and roads safe by gritting, clearing ditches & removing obstacles; others support the Hall by helping at events, anonymously donating funds, or sponsoring raffle prizes & being part of the wonderful Uplyme community. The Hall is very busy & a real community resource, used by many different groups and organisations. Our income comes from hirers and the trustees work hard at keeping charges affordable to support our local groups whilst keeping the Hall in good condition for future generations. There is a continual drive towards raising funds and in a way that everyone can enjoy. This year we are raising funds towards installing solar panels and will apply for grants but will also need to raise plenty ourselves to cover the estimated cost of around £20K. Come along to our events, most of them involve excellent cake, all have tasty refreshments. Mmmm, yummy! Saturday 2nd MARCH 10am-noon JUMBLE SALE & COFFEE MORNING Saturday 4th May: (Star Wars Day) Indoor Car Boot Saturday 8th June: Village Fete. Raffle for Hall funds. If you would like to find out more or help at any of our events, please talk to Chair Pete Hackett, Secretary Margaret Wiscombe, our lovely Manager Amber or any of our wonderful committee members.
