2 Notes from the Axe Valley Mission Community As I write these notes in mid-March, the weather is a bit grey and somewhat breezy, but at least it is not raining! What a mixed bag we’ve had this winter’s end/early spring. Torrential rain, interspersed with warm, bright sunshine – February has lived up to its old name of February fill-dyke. But God’s promise never to desert us began, as ever, with snowdrops. Our churchyards are full of primroses and the dance of the daffodils was in full swing in time for Mothering Sunday’s posies. An early Easter is racing towards us. Palm Sunday celebrations, the reflections of Holy week and the joy of Easter day with its promise of salvation will be behind us as you read, and we will be moving towards summer. Perhaps you will be joining us for the Mission Community’s weekend at Lee Abbey in April. Last year’s visit provided an opportunity to create and renew bonds with fellow community members and to rest, reflect and renew our spiritual lives in beautiful surroundings. The Abbey is a charity (no. 1094097) and its website describes it: ‘A stay at Lee Abbey is far more than just a Christian retreat or Christian holiday – it is an opportunity to encounter Jesus Christ through worship, teaching, ministry and interacting with the Community in ways in which, we pray, will transform your life, relationships and community, and our environment and world’. Quite a boast; my prayer is that it will be as good as last year. Take a look at their website for more information about their work. What does the late spring and early summer hold for you and your church and community? Fetes and fundraising events, perhaps – money issues are always with us. Sometimes it’s hard work to organise events but the sheer pleasure of being together and renewing our bonds of fellowship make it worth it. They must do, or we would never to it again! Rogationtide is coming closer, as is Sea Sunday for our coastal communities. These are opportunities to interface with our town and village communities, and also much fun! So, hoping for success in all our efforts, joy in our worship, and an everincreasing faith to draw us closer to the Lord, let’s step out into summer. Lesley Gubbins - LLM NB. Lesley Gubbins is a Licensed Lay Minister in the Axe Valley Mission Community

I must first say a huge THANK YOU to Axminster Printing Ltd who at the eleventh hour printed our magazine last month. On the Saturday I was sending off the magazine, I received an email saying the company we had used over the past 20+ years had ceased trading. Apart from a bit of panic about printing, I felt extremely sorry for all the people who have lost there jobs, a sad time for them. I hope you like the new look magazine? We certainly do and we are also delighted that our carbon footprint is much smaller now we are trading locally. Deadlines and availability is much shorter and that helps to make a huge difference going forward. So again I say “thank you” to Keith and the team in Axminster. With Easter early this year, there’s not a huge amount to put in this months magazine as all the events are mainly in March! However there is the Annual Parochial Church Meeting on Monday 22nd April, where the Church officers are elected and the annual report of the church is given. Later that week, we have the “BIG CHURCH CLEAN” ! It’s been a number of years since the windows have been cleaned and all the high places in the churcch dusted, so we are having a 3 day event to tackle this...... You are most welcome to come and give a hand! Ed

7 Journeys of Faith The Undercliff – Encouragement towards being like Jesus Christ. In late 1839, some 800 acres of planted wheat between Lyme Regis and Axmouth dramatically sank towards the sea to form our famous Undercliff Nature Reserve. It has continued as such because “it faces the sun; is well watered and is not being interfered with by mankind because of its inaccessibility.” Access is officially restricted to a single, safe pathway. This made me think about the challenge of sticking to a safe pathway in our Christian lives. When Jesus was teaching his disciples to pray, he encouraged them to ask for the Holy Spirit. If we feel we are failing to stick to Christ’s “narrow way to eternal life”, we can pray in Jesus’ name, for what we lack among the following characteristics:- 1.Fruits of the Spirit - Love; Joy; Peace; Patience; Kindness; Goodness; Gentleness and Self-control. 2.Gifts of the Spirit – Message of Wisdom; Message of knowledge; Faith; Healing; Miraculous powers; Prophecy; Distinguishing between spirits; Speaking in different kinds of tongues; Interpretation of tongues. The Holy Spirit gives them to each of us “just as he determines” 3.Divine wisdom as to how and when to appropriate these resources, our motives being loving and "Pure; Peace-loving; Considerate; Submissive; Full of mercy and good fruit; Impartial; Sincere; Happy pilgrimage! David Dare. P.S., “The Undercliff” is beautifully illustrated and described in Elaine Franks book of that title with a forward by John Fowles. Bible reference to the above are Galatians 5 verses 22 & 23; 1Corinthians 12 verses 7 – 11 and James 3 verses 17 and 18. Blessings, David

11 Church of England awards £2.4 million to boost participation of Deaf, disabled and neurodivergent people The Church of England has awarded £2.4 million to fund a series of measures aimed at boosting the participation of Deaf, disabled, and neurodivergent people in parish life. This ranges from encouraging vocations to the priesthood, to grants for improved access to buildings. Under plans over the next three years, the funds will back projects including lay and ordained vocations events, leadership programmes, and guidance to churches on more accessible signage. The schemes will be developed and managed by the Church of England’s Disability and Deaf Ministry Task Groups. A pilot scheme is planned for seven dioceses for café style spaces in churches, in partnership with mental health professionals and the charity Renew Wellbeing, aimed at providing welcoming spaces. Another pilot will also be developed in the Church of England’s Northern Province providing 20 grants of up to £50,000 for projects that include physical changes to buildings that improve access. Do you remember your own PIN number? Nearly one in five of us can’t. We are so used to paying by contactless that when we have to withdraw cash or type our PIN into a card reader, our minds go blank. ‘Contactless’ payments hit a record high last year. A staggering 93.4 per cent of all in-store card transactions up to £100 was made using contactless, rather than cash or PIN and card reader. According to Barclays, we now depend on contactless payments and smartphone technology so much that more than a fifth of young people now leave their wallets at home when they go shopping. Contactless technology was first introduced by Barclaycard 17 years ago. It had a spending limit of £10. The limit was increased during the pandemic, to reduce physical contact in shops, rising to its current £100 limit. www.parishpump.co.uk

12 A Gathering for Earth Day - Monday 22 April 2024, 8pm In recent months, a few of us have come together to initiate the ‘Uplyme Climate Community’. The title is slightly misleading, because we care equally about biodiversity. It’s also misleading because people from surrounding areas are perfectly welcome. It’s just that it might be a bit of a mouthful to call it the ‘Uplyme and Surrounding Areas Climate and Biodiversity Community’...If you can think of a better name, we’re all ears! We’re hoping that it will become a growing community of support for people who care about these matters. It can feel hard to think about as an individual, and that’s why it’s important to us to create communal spaces where these kinds of conversations can take place. You may have seen posters for, or indeed been to, one or more of our gettogethers: the ‘Love, Gratitude and Pancakes’ event in February; the ‘Climate vigil’ and ‘Walk, talk and Look’ events in March. Our next event is to celebrate Earth Day, on Monday 22 April. We plan to gather at 8pm and to create some space to hear what sorts of things people are doing because they care about the climate and the diversity of life on earth. There will be space for new ideas, too. The venue is tbc, because we’d like to have a sense of numbers before deciding where to meet, but it will definitely be in Uplyme. And there will definitely be refreshments! You might feel that what you do is small and of little consequence. Or you might feel your whole life already revolves around working for the good of the planet. Or perhaps you’re somewhere in the middle. You might feel that you don’t really do anything at all, or feel that life is already so demanding you can’t contemplate doing anything different. You might have ideas about things you’d like to do, personally, professionally, or as a community. Whoever you are, and whatever you do or don’t do, whether you’ve got lots of ideas or just want to listen, you are welcome. If you’re interested in knowing more, or if you know you’d like to be there - please could you let me know on 07894548160 or [email protected] Laura Condell

13 General Synod backs action to tackle biodiversity crisis The General Synod has backed a series of measures to promote biodiversity on C of E land, from churchyards as havens of wildlife and plants, to the stewardship of agricultural and forestry land. Members of the Synod welcomed progress already made by the Church Commissioners, the National Church Institutions, dioceses, parishes, cathedrals, and schools to manage their land for climate and nature. The Synod approved further action to increase biodiversity including work towards drawing up environmental policy and land management plans for Dioceses and the recording of biodiversity in church green spaces. The Synod also backed a request for the Church Commissioners to report back within three years on their progress in enhancing and supporting biodiversity across their agricultural and forestry land. Introducing the debate at the Synod, the C of E’s lead Bishop for the Environment, Graham Usher, said: “We are one of the most naturedepleted countries in the world - 2% of species are already extinct - 41% of species have declined since 1970, 26% of our mammals are at risk of extinction and 97% of UK’s wildflower meadows have been lost since the 1930s. “We need to act now to help the diversity of life on this single island planet home we share.” Bishop Graham said that churchyards are home to a range of wildlife. In many parishes the churchyard is the only remaining ‘species-rich’ grassland untouched by post Second World War cultivation and development. He added that in urban areas, churchyards are often the only green space. “Our churchyards should be places of the living, not just the dead,” he added. www.parishpump.co.uk

15 1st Lym Valley Scout Group (Uplyme and Lyme Regis) I can’t believe we are into the Summer term already, where has all the time gone. This is the busiest term of the Scouting calendar when all the sections are out and about, camping, hiking and partaking in watersports and having lots of fun. This month one of our Scouts, Wilf CliftShanley, will be going to Windsor Castle for the St Georges Day Parade with his family to meet Bear Grylls and a member of the Royal Family. Wilf was awarded the Chief Scout’s Commendation for Meritorious Conduct for giving his dad first aid after a collapse and calling the emergency services. This will be a very memorable and exciting occasion for him, and we can’t wait to hear all about it. The rest of the Group will be celebrating St George’s Day by having a parade and service at Uplyme Church on Sunday 28th April, followed by a BBQ at the Scout Hut and then a wide game organised by one of the Explorer Scouts. This is a great time for all the sections to meet up and join in games. We will all continue to work towards our challenge badges and hopefully we will be able to award some of our Beavers, Cubs and Scouts their top awards this term. We will be out in the Community this term for our fundraising. We will be at the May Day Fete at Anning Road playing fields on Sunday 12th May and at Uplyme Summer Fete on Saturday 8th June look forward to seeing you all, do come and say hello. We have spaces in the Beaver Section so if you have a child who is coming up to 6 years old and would like to join please contact us on our website. Also if you as an Adult would like to come and join us, help out at meetings, sit on the Trustee board or just help out in the back ground please contact us and have a chat. 19 On Strike. I wanted to go on a journey So I thought I’d take the Train They say that if you travel Let the train take on the strain. I stood upon the Platform With hardly anyone around, I kicked at all the gravel, that I stood on, on the ground. I glanced left down the Railway track Then my eyes looked right, In just a few short hours It’ll be the middle of the night. The trains, they just don’t stop here Its like they don’t exist There’s this feeling that I’m dreaming And they have vanished in the mist. I found that I’d waited hours It is now the middle of the night, And the reason that the trains don’t come ‘cos the Drivers are on strike! Diana Hunt Cathedral attendance has continued its post-pandemic bounce back Attendance at Church of England cathedrals has continued to bounce back following the pandemic, according to the latest statistics. Figures show that adult usual Sunday attendance rose 60% between 2021 and 2022 for the 42 Church of England mainland Cathedrals to 12,300 adults. A total of 28,200 people including children attended services every week, according to Cathedral Statistics 2022. Over the year there were 584,000 attendances at specially arranged services – not included in average weekly attendance - such as school services. The number of special services stood at 2,100. The total reported attendance at Christmas services stood at 104,000. www.parishpump.co.uk

20 Uplyme Parish Council c/o Uplyme Village Hall, Lyme Road, Uplyme, Lyme Regis DT7 3UY Tel: 07413 947067 Email: [email protected] Website: www.uplymeparishcouncil.org Right at the heart of the community. Stafford Mount Thanks, in part, to funds granted to the Parish Council by East Devon National Landscape (formerly the AONB) to pay for new paving, work will soon begin on replacing the broken concrete hard standing with brand new paving. This may require the short section of public footpath between Crogg Lane and Lyme Road to be closed temporarily, so please bear with us whilst this work is carried out. Updates as to when this is likely to happen will be posted on our website and social media page. Playground – new equipment We’re almost set to start the consultation with the community on what you would like to use in the way of new equipment, so please encourage the 11 year olds and under you know to participate – after all this is their facility! If you are against the Council spending money on the playpark there will also be the opportunity to comment on this in the planned short questionnaire. The questionnaire will be promoted widely when it is available, so keep an eye out for it. Grants The Council recently agreed a new grant-awarding policy and simple application process, which is available to access on our dedicated Grants page on the Council’s website. If you are a charity or non-profit making organisation and are in need of funds to help the Uplyme community, then you could join the following organisations in accessing funds to help your endeavour: Grants paid in 2023-24 Help at Hand Uplyme £100.00 King George V Field £550.00 CAB Bridport £250.00 Uplyme Preschool £500.00 (plus £250 in 2022-23) Barnes Meadow Management Committee £20.00 Lyme Regis Town Band £300.00 If you are interested in applying for funds in the 2024-25 year, have a look at the requirements and how to apply. 23 Can it really be April? The Village Hall isn’t holding a fund-raising event this month but there was plenty happening in February and March … Our Quiz Night in February raised over £550 towards the installation of solar panels on the hall, which will cost around £18K. Congratulations to the winning team, The Dark Horses who were Galloways, Matthews & Pitts. And a big thank you to Ian Wood and Toby for running the quiz, as well as The Talbot Arms & Seaton Tesco for donation of drinks. Sunday 18th February at 7.30am was a very wet morning but it didn’t stop Fred Heath wielding his mighty chainsaw to trim the hedge, aided by a teadrinking team of damp but happy volunteers. Thank you to Fred Heath, Kingsley Landscaping, Sinclair Garden Nursery and Dave Foxwell for all your help. Hedge-cutting Sunday was the norm for this very wet winter, so James Booth has been out there clearing ditches keeping the waterways free to cope with the torrential downpours. THANK YOU, JAMES BOOTH – you are our local hero and a star! Our Jumble Sale and Coffee morning in March was very successful, raising another £700 towards the solar panels. We will be holding another Jumble Sale in October for all those bargain hunters out there. Do come along to our next fund-raising event in May on Star Wars Day. TABLE TOP SALE on Saturday 4th May from 10am to 2pm. Look out for posters round the village and on social media. If you would like to find out more or help at any of our events, please talk to Chair Pete Hackett, Secretary Margaret Wiscombe, our lovely Manager Amber or any of our wonderful committee members. 24 Even a wounded world is feeding us. Even a wounded world holds us, giving us moments of wonder and joy. I choose joy over despair. Not because I have my head in the sand, but because joy is what the Earth gives me daily and I must return the gift. Robin Wall Kimmerer UplymeClimateCommunity
